Also is it okay to throw down on all perennials in Feb? (Zone 7b). I have an abundance of holly tone and would like to just use it as an all purpose.
I don't know about pony-tails and VW micro-buses, but there is nothing wrong with being an environmentalist. If more people were concerned about the environment, it would be a better world

My question: the directions on the pkg. state to apply one cup per foot of diameter of an established shrub. So if my hydrangea is 4 feet wide, wouldn't I use 4 cups? I planted a hedge last year, ligustrum recurvifolium and sweet viburnum, and I am looking to achieve as much privacy as possible with these plants- my yard has a 6 ft brick wall that backs to a roadway and sidewalk, but the sidewalk is higher than my yard so when people walk down it I have no privacy at all. I got some growth on them last year, but they weren't planted until May/ June, so I want to get as much growth out of them this year as I possibly can, hopefully getting the privacy I'm looking for, if this is even possible by the end of this summer/ fall. I fertilized them about a week ago with Holly-tone, but I was thinking I should also apply a liquid fertilizer to push new growth. Would you recommend that and what type? I'm in Zone 9 and we've had record highs the last few weeks and many trees are already beginning to bud and I have a lot of new growth on these shrubs.
Jim, I want to use lemon lime nandina with a loropetalum to accent american boxwoods on a-front foundation of a white house. Would you use purple daydream in front of the nandinas, or put the lemon limes in front with a different loropetalum behind? I amconcerned about crimson fire as it often does not seem to stay colorful.Steve in Charlotte

I'm here in Maryland, i'm nervous about putting any fertilizer down right now since we still have about 3 more weeks of winter. I don't want any new growth to come then we have another cold blast or snow then the top growth turns brown. My hyacinths have already broken ground and i see the buds on my lilac tree appear ready to open. I primarily use tree-tone for my crepe myrtles and green giants. I use holly-tone for the lilac, holly's, and azaleas. Thanks for your informative videos.
Yes, unfortunately we are going to get some frost damage this spring. Everything has decided to wake up. I don't think the organic fertilizers will have any real impact on that, because they don't work until the soil is warm. Certainly I would hold off if I were using osmocote or something similar

I know the arsenic issue well. I don't think it would be an issue to do it a couple of times, but I probably wouldn't add it very often. The main issue is that frequently it doesn't even help, because if your pH is to high the plants can't use the iron anyway.
My mulch is paper thin at this point. Almost a year old. I can see the ground everywhere. I have never worried about it regardless. Some things just seem like more work than benefit. Water moves through the mulch freely so it should carry nutrients with it.

What about perennials? Im in Zone 5 (central Indiana) and Im debating on which one to use, I LOVE espoma products
I used the same thing across all of my plants. If you wanted to use an espoma product for flowering plants that would fine.

Yes it is. As long as it is slow release. It is to early if it is a none slow release fertilizer.

It would likely be happier in some afternoon shade, but I like some morning sun on them.

I see you dont remove your mulch before fertilizing, how will the fertilizer be able to penetrate through the mulch?
