Thank you so much for all the scientifically based gardening advice! When I need to know how to do something, I watch your videos because I know whatever you say will be right. Your teaching is doubly useful for me because I am also in zone 7B (Alabama) and have heavy clay soil. Over the last year, I have been able to transform my yard by following your advice. The biggest game changer was your video on how to plant a shrub. I bought a trenching shovel and found I can actually dig holes in my clay with it! I really do appreciate all the effort you do to try to educate those of us who aren't in the horticulture business!
In addition to the gloves, I like to wear a dust mask when casting fertilizers.
Jim, thanks for advocating for organic fertilizers. It's the only way to go.
Jim, I took up gardening and landscaping as hobbies during the pandemic, here in Houston, TX (zone 9). I have learned so much from your videos, especially about the Southern plants that are predominant here.

Jim once again thank you for your great insight. I used a fertilizer last year with 8 of my lorapetulum plants. Instructions were to put fertilizer in the hole with the plant and they all got 🔥 burnt!! Only 2 are hanging on. So I stick with your channel to learn as much as I can, because I trust the information when it comes from you or is endorsed by you!👍🏽👍🏽
Great information. I wish more people understood that clay soil is not the same for all. And that there is no quick fix for it.
"Is all you want for Christmas a bag of organic fertilizer?" LOLing! My dogs have the same wishlist. They will come back in from the yard with PlantTone breath. Hope that is not harmful for them. Also, I love seeing the leaves in your garden beds, I mulched with my leaves and encouraged a neighbor to do the same.
Yep, well known local garden center told me to use gypsum in my flower beds since I have clay.

Excellent explanation of fertilizer and why it's important to get a soil test done before randomly spreading amendments. I'm sorry to say I have been guilty of being a random spreader. Clay soil, so spread gypsum; evergreens, so spread Holly Tone; sandy soil in some areas so go heavy with Plant Tone. Luckily the ground has been mostly covered with snow and frozen for the last 2-3 weeks so I haven't done anything except shovel snow and ice lately. As soon as it thaws, I'm getting soil samples sent to the cooperative extension office. 👍☺️
Excellent video, fertilizing is tricky business. You really need to know what your plants need, and what you are trying to achieve, when doing it.
Thank you for dispelling garden myths. There are so many out there. And for promoting soil tests. Nutrient overload can be worse than nutrient deficiencies.

I laughed so loud about the dog and the fertilizer!! I was putting out Plant Tone yesterday here in Alabama and one of dogs was just dying to eat it. I was worried it wasn’t safe and a couple of times I caught her eating it. I didn’t know that was a thing with dogs. I hope she doesn’t get sick. 🤦🏻♀️

Always so thankful for your advice! I bought a big bag of epsom salt, but never applied it. I felt like I didn’t know what I was doing and it seemed better to skip it. I do use Hollytone on everything, my soil ph is above 7 and chlorosis does tend to affect a lot of things. I think today will be the day I spread fertilizer and some composted chicken manure around the garden! 🥳

One year I used an organic fertilizer that had a lot of chicken manure in it. The next morning I saw a fox sniffing the air. He must have been really disappointed not to find the chicken.
I am fortunate to have a large organic chicken farmer 5 miles from my home, & they offer chicken pelletize fertilizer, love it and reasonably priced at $19 for 50 pounds.
Fortunately for me, no dogs lol. I will be putting plant tone on my beds in the next week or so... thank you for the reminder! I heard that using Rose Tone is good for woody perennials like hydrangeas so I'll probably pick up some of that, too. Have a great day, Jim!

First time I've heard about the calcium to magnesium ratio. Really interesting. My last soil test showed those figures but there were absolutely no comments that described how to understand it or what to do with the info. Will look into it.

I've always been a huge fan of epsoma products and use multiple products from them every year. One of my favorites is bioTone when planting... But sadly I've found it's my dog's favorite as well. 😂 one of the first times I used one of the tones I was unaware of this and was quite (let's say) surprised when I caught them in the act.
I now make sure the dogs are up and either use it right before a rain or make sure to irrigate right after.
Jim - Have been following your awesome channel for a while. I live in zone 7b and was wondering what screening plants, trees, Holly can i grow on top my backyard retaining wall. Worried about the root structure damaging the wall. It gets 5-6 hours of sun. Thanks
I always put holly tone around azaleas. I can’t get that smell out of my nose for day. Also can’t put in backyard because of three dogs. I even tried burying it around my camellias and they still found it. Ugh! Putting plant tone on my beds soon. Thank you for the soil test information. On my to do list for sure.
I used gypsum on an area of my yard that the dogs like to relieve themselves in and noticed a huge difference in the health of the grass. but you have to have some seriously anaerobic clay soil for it to be worth using for compaction.
I have had a retaining wall built last fall . I was planning on planting, then COVID hit and everything was gone. This spring I’m doing a huge planting. Should I fertilize the bare ground now before I plant ? I. In zone 8-A central Alabama.

Good info. What you recommend for sunshine ligustrums that have lost their leaves but can getting a few back. Must have 50 all around property. Thinking we got so much rain in Feb may be the problem. SC zone 8.
Also, you may need to guard your planting beds from the dogs, I highly recommend it. Even after I watered my Epsoma fertilizer in, my dog killed my bleeding hearts and almost killed two of my hydrangeas digging and rolling in the bed.
Ha! My dogs love that stuff too 😂. And my neighbors always know when I’ve fertilized.
I just added Epson salt on my newly planted bareroot rose 😱 I listened to other youyubers. Grrrrrrrr
Thank you Jim for this valueable information. In zone 10, means I better get with it this upcoming weekend. How about potted plants. Do you just scatter the fertilizer around the base of the plant or do you scratch it in? How often should I fertilize potted plants?
I do containers differently depending on what's in them. Shrubs and trees I will do this way and I will likely do it again later in the spring. Annual flowering things I actually use something like osmocote to give them a consistent feeding.

I’m in zone 7B as well, ABQ NM. We moved to an already landscaped yard and all the planting areas are “mulched” with rock (super common here) and watered by drip (no exposed soil). Can I still sprinkle the organic fertilizer over the rocks and then water it in?

Can I spread the Plant Tone on my beds on top of my dead leaf mulch?
Jim, I read that if you spread the fertilizer over mulch, you should double the amount because much of the fertilizer will be used up to decompose the mulch. What are your thoughts on this? This recommendation comes from Espoma which is the organic fertilizer I use too.
From Espoma:
The products are best applied prior to adding mulch. If you have already mulched you have two options. First, you can pull the mulch away, apply the plant food, and re-mulch. If this is not desirable you can apply directly onto the mulch, but you will need to double the application rate. This is needed because the mulch is decomposing and this decomposition process will take nutrients from the plant food application. To ensure your plants get the food the higher rate is required.
I don't know what I am going to do??? I have a new dog and he LOVES espoma. I completely got it when you asked Holly about wanting it for Christmas. I have it in a large stone wall like built in planter that has my blueberries in it. He jumped up into it ate his fill of soil then rolled in it within just a few minutes. Now I need to fill back in area with soil but I'm afraid to fertilize it. I am not even going to talk about what he did to pots on deck last summer. sigh....
I have Hydrangeas that the soil impacts the blue vs pink blooms. Is it ok to amend the soil for blue flowers? I certainly don’t want to damage the soil. I’m saving this video to revisit.
Absolutely it's OK to amend the soil to achieve the hydrangea colour you want for the big leaf hydrangeas. The more acidic the soil/compost then the more blue the blooms. In my English garden the soil PH varies and I have both blue and pink macrophylla hydrangeas.

I like Espoma too - but the opossums and raccoons come along and are attracted to it so they dig up the ground where I have applied it. I guess I will use 10-10-10 this year :-(
I also use this fertilizer on my plants. Will it hurt my dog though. She ends up digging in the dirt because of the smell. I just heard you say that you were putting your dog up because she likes it too.
Can I plant pole beans out now in zone 8 Alabama? I don't know if I've started them too early but they are growing fast.

Must have missed it...what does one do to test the soil/have the soil tested?
Do you have an opinion about water ph? My city water ph is about 9. My rainwater ph is about 7. I have heard if you want to grow blue berries in Texas, you have to do it a pot as our soils are very alkaline (9ish) and you have to water with rainwater. What do you say? I have also heard it best to use mostly rainwater in a greenhouse because the salts in city water accumulate in soil and ruin it if there is no rain to wash the salts away.
Perfect Timing on the video (as usual)! I will take advantage of the weather to top dress my flower beds with plant tone before the pine needles get put out in a few weeks. Just got my soil3 compost delivered to top off my vegetable garden raised beds also! Somehow I got 'bitter chamber' in my vegetable raised beds so let's hope the thick layer of compost keeps it at bay this year (I decided not to till the compost in so I don't disturb the seeds.). If not, should I 'mulch' my vegetable garden?
I would definitely mulch between rows, but not against the plants
glad you're addressing misinformation, it's amazing how much info is out there billed as the answer when it's incorrect or produced to sell more products. Last year I didn't manage to apply any fertilizers due to crazy weather and an overwhelming garden overhaul project, by working on my soil with 50000 lbs of compost, everything thrived and my goal is to minimize the number of products I use year over year. Good soil is worth the effort

Hi Jim, I understand that the results of these soil tests vary so widely that you wonder if you can even rely on them? Additionally, how would you test various flower and garden beds that each are leaching out different nutrients? Would you need separate soil tests if you did find someone to test accurately?
I did take several here. Tendencies is all I'm looking for. You really can't fix the soil exactly in every area. So an overall mixed sample sent to several places is probably perfect. pH is the most important
I wear a dust mask when I fertilize like that, but maybe the brand I use doesn't taste as good. 😀

I've had it in my mouth too 😂😂 Not a great taste. Never thought of a mask I just pull my shirt over my nose. I've also had to bath a 120lb American Bulldog after he rolled in it..

Hey Jim, great video. I spent a lot of time and effort planting hundreds of bulbs in my garden this past December-my first time planting spring bulbs-and since we’ve been getting so many consecutive days of heavy rain here in the south (and apparently more on the way) I’m worried they’ll rot just as they are starting to emerge. Is it going to effect them?
I'm at 7b/8a boundary in Alabama: my newly planted alliums and daffodils have emerged, have survived all the rain then the week of sub-freezing weather earlier in February. Give them time to do their thing, likely you'll be very happy.

I love the idea of using an organic - the Espoma products are awesome. However, I too have a dog that loves the stuff and he not only rolls in it but will dig up whatever it is I have just planted or fertilized. Any suggestions ??? will watering well (if no rain expected) help ??? Is a non-smelly organic product available ??? This has happened more than once & I'm about at my whit's end ... and yes, I've tried cayenne pepper to try to deter him and it doesn't seem to help ...
Also, I've also heard (via a plant society meeting) that lime is a great additive to the soil due to the fact it helps the plant absorb nutrients already in the soil that it can't reach ... I found this a fascinating concept ... your thoughts ???? thanks
Lime will raise the pH which may or may not be needed based on a soil test. That is unfortunately not good advice. If lime was applied and not needed, it would actually make some nutrients unavailable.

Did you not watch the video? He uses an organic granular fertilizer such as Plant tone for ALL his plants. No special fertilizer for your Japanese Maple in Alabama. 1 fertilizer.. maybe rewatch the video?

Thank you. Can you talk about milorganite to deter deer? I have a lawn service but they don't use it so Id like to do it, as the deer decimate my flowers, costa etc. they even have the nerve to approach the mail box for the lilies and rose bush, geeez we are in the city. lol
The deer off spray works really well for me as long as I apply after every rainfall. Even my hostas remain untouched, which deer seem to especially love. If I forget to reapply after rainfall I see munching very soon after:)

Looks like this could easily be inhaled as you toss it over your landscape, perhaps a mask?
