    I was really impressed until I saw how it mounts to the derailleur. There's a lot of slop since it's just mounted by a protruding allen key that goes into the derailleur's allen bolt. You can see it in the video. If you start with slop, I don't know how you end up with precision.

    • @GCPerformance18
      @GCPerformance18  ปีที่แล้ว

      if the tool is using the same key to enter and it is the same hole and it bottoms out, it should be the same tolerance going in and out

    • @wearejames1
      @wearejames1 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @CrabgrassFarmer Agreed, there will be clearance between the internal hexagon or Torx of the mech/derailleur so not a precise fit and as stated the alignment tool is heavy, so unlikely to be perfect and will have some slop.
      An expensive bit of kit with design issues, so not for me. To be good it needs much a much longer location ie through the axle to be perfectly square/perpendicular because as stated on 12 or 13 Speed the sprockets are so close together and therefore little margin for error.

    • @CrabgrassFarmer
      @CrabgrassFarmer ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@GCPerformance18 I wasn't concerned about the in-out precision. It was the up-down slop. But you've used it and have a better perspective than I do. But I don't think there's a question that there is up-down slop. Maybe it's just not that critical and you can sort of take it into account. The slop will always be taken up in the downward direction because of the tools weight. That is going to give it some degree of cant/tilt. Maybe you can account for it.

    Looks like it works decent for 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock, but doesn't seem like it would help much with the 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock positions like a traditional Park Tool DAG would. I should also mention modern Shimano derailleur cages are not always in plain with the cassette, I believe the bottom pulley has some natural yaw built into it to help quiet the chain.

    • @huskiesparty
      @huskiesparty ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually the upper pulley has a wee bit of side-to-side play, it is to improve shifting.

    • @GNX157
      @GNX157 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@huskiesparty This was the case with older systems, say 6700 and older. On those it was actually the lower pulley that did the real shifting and the upper pulley had the side to side slop. On newer shadow derailleur systems like R8000 etc, both the upper and lower pulleys have no play and it is more the upper pulley that does the shifting and that pulley has quite aggressive teeth for making that chain move precisely, while the lower one has smoother less aggressive teeth.

  • @MichalSzul
    @MichalSzul ปีที่แล้ว +11

    It is a gimmick, quite expensive one I presume. This thing wobble around like crazy when you loosen adjustment screw to set it up. So you never know if you are actually set up correctly to reference face which are cassette sprockets. Which means that your cage bending could misalign it instead of aligning.
    It is no measurement tool as tolerances there are joke. Precision of this thing has to be at least in tenths of mm if not in hundreds as 12spd shimano casette pitch is 3.55mm. This means that it should be build like micrometer to actually do something and be better than DAG tool.

  • @derf9465
    @derf9465 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Easy to make yourself. Take a metal Table leg, put a bolt through that had the same pitch as your hanger, with a spacer to clear the axle. Then just use a ruler at the four compass points to check for square.

    • @alavroff01
      @alavroff01 ปีที่แล้ว

      or use the wheel technique, take an old wheel with free ball bearings (shimano like hub), the axle has the same thread size as derailleur hanger and screw it in. Then just adjust the screwed wheel so it's parallel to other ezpz

    Remember folks, if you adjust your indexing or hanger, be sure to check your upper and lower limits per shimano, and for DI2, remember the derailleur body should not be resting on the limit screws. Shimano specifies a clearance gap. If not, it could strain the stepper motor and or drain the battery.

    • @Elbrunosh
      @Elbrunosh ปีที่แล้ว

      Pls again… I don‘t get it 😅 resting on the limit screws when?

    • @GNX157
      @GNX157 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Elbrunosh if you need rebend the hanger or adjust the indexing, when you go to either the first or last gear, you’ll be at the limit screws. On mechanical derailleur it was normal for the body to rest on the limit screw in first or last gear, but not the case with di2. There is a very small clearance to be set, and that may be thrown off if you were to bend the hanger and as a result redo your indexing.

    • @GCPerformance18
      @GCPerformance18  ปีที่แล้ว

  • @GNX157

    For that screw, maybe best bet is use a hollow ground flat head screwdriver from a gunsmithing toolkit. As for the tool, to me it’s only good as a spot check during the season to prove or validate a previous adjustment is still holding. I’d still use a hanger alignment tool, then adjust my indexing by feel and sound. Once I was happy, I could use this tool to look at it and say “ oh, that’s where the chain ended up being”.

  • @trekkeruss

    As a pro wrench, to me this falls under the category of gadget. Granted, I would want to have one in my own hands to evaluate it, but unless I am missing something, this can only be used as a gauge and not a tool to do the actual alignment. Can it remain in place along with an alignment tool, or does it sometimes need to be removed? If it could do both gauge and align, then it would have far greater value, IMO.
    Does the tool have to be disassembled to fit in that "case?" It appears that way, and if it does, then it is essentially worthless.

    • @GCPerformance18
      @GCPerformance18  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Off to the customer. Reminds me of like retul fit or the computer models they show people getting fits done. The fit being done by the fitter does not need all those lasers and electronics on the guy being fit. It is nothing more then the mechanic or fitter doing there job and then showing the consumer “see how good it looks”
      Yea once done to fit in the case you have to take apart. But as it stays in the shop we won’t put it back in a case. It goes in a tool drawer

    This concept is the same used in the gun industry to zero riffle scopes. Yes they “help” get the aim close to target but you always have to end up zeroing the correct way.
    I think the Park Tool alignment tool is easier and can be trusted 100%

    A gimmick for suckers. My Dura-Ace 9150 rear derailleur has been manufactured with the cage designed to have a bit of misalignment and it is carbon, if you try to bend it you will break it. Also the hangers on a lot of road bikes now are designed to brake not bend, they are very hard cast and if you try to bend one it will snap in two. You should send it back and say Thanks but No Thanks 😉😉

    Cool idea but poorly executed imho. (like how you almost dropped it) I can't believe it just sit on the derailleur bolt with a hex or torx bit. As everyone knows there's a bit of tolerance between the bolt and the bit (or any tool) that varies by the manufacture of the bolt and/or the tool. As you can see in the video itself that depending on how you are holding this laser tool the laser alignment changed even though the tool is still attached to the derailleur. This is why when we use the normal derailleur hanger alignment tool we press lightly in the consistent direction towards the rim at 4 opposing spots to get an accurate reading. An alignment tool properly tightened to the derailleur hanger still have a tiny wiggle room (tolerance) at its attachment (between bolt and the rotating beam). The other possible issue is that some rear derailleur may be designed to have a slight angle and tolerance built in the pulley cage in order to shift better. Anyway thanks for the video and let's hope things improve.

    What's to say if the laser line is parallel to the dropout? I think you have to first get the dropout angle first, and then compare it to the angle of the cogs and pulley.
    Also, you shouldn't touch the pulley when trying to realign. When you purposely bent the hanger, you didn't bend the cage. But to get it realigned, you are bending it back anyways, in the opposite direction. The right way to do it would be to remove the hanger and straighten it in a vise, and reinstall. You only straighten the cage if it is actually bent and not if the sacrificial hanger is bent.

    • @GCPerformance18
      @GCPerformance18  ปีที่แล้ว

      puley cages can get bent, so this is the process of figuring out what got damage in the fall with the consumer, sometimes the hanger is strait and the cage of a stock derailer just got tweaked, this happens alot to be honest, the only way to fix it in this matter would be to tweak it back or replace the cage

    No thank you, I've been dialling in index gear systems since the 80's with no problems at all, even the stubborn SUNTOUR index systems from the same period as well.
    And this tool will only fix one aspect of proper derailleur adjustment, bad gear changing can also be from rusty cables, cable housing ends could be frayed, entering and exiting of cable housing could be kinked, basically caused by housing being to short, also cable routing can also cause problems as well. Long chains can be a problem as well, I had a customer come in for wheel truing and he complained that he could never do better than a 5th place finish, I took a look at his rear derailleur and said I think your chain is a bit long because your chain is being sandwiched in be tween the pulley and the cogs, so we removed a link and he took his bike for a test ride and came back with a Kool aid smile and said WOW it's so much more smoother, I asked so which other shop has been servicing your bike for you, his reply shop a that has been servicing his bike for well over 15 years. So to say there's many other reasons why a gear system will not be working properly.

      While this tool is overkill you could argue, 11 and 12 speed is no longer an eyeballing proposition IMHO. The tolerances are just too tight to really get it right without some sort of derailleur alignment tool. It may work "okay", but "okay" is not right and you risk excess wear and tear and subpar shifting. But if you are okay with that...🤷 Many people think their bike shifts well until they ride one that really does.
