Not sure I'd call Capaldi's wardrobe 'uninspired', the two costumes you talk about here - the magician suit and the hoodie - are a bit standard but you completely glossed over the velvet jackets he starts wearing in series 9 and 10 (particularly 10) - there's a red one, a black one, a charcoal one that he wears in the Monk Trilogy - they're all ace, and inspired by Pertwee's wardrobe

I'm going to have to respectfully disagree with these comments. Eccelston is not just my Doctor, but his look just fit perfectly. Was a look that to me said he was battered, bruised, and not up to playing games. That was, in essence, The Doctor WHO (see what I did there?) had not only eradicated the daleks, but his own people. He destroyed two entire races and this is a look that reflects his mentality IMO. Granted, that was before the waters got muddied, but that's where things were at the point in time.

Also my friend Kai literally dresses like the fourth Doctor all the time. He has a really big oversized long coat, a wide brimmed fedora hat and he even got him mum to knit him a replica of the scarf. He just wears these day to day. Like completely unironically. He just walks round the shops wearing them. It works well with Kai because he has quite a thick beard and long hair. but he genuinely wears the coat, hat and scarf like jut as his coat and scarf and hat that you just like wear whilst walking down the street. And to add to his doctorness he only ever wears chunky boots as his shoes (unless it's a special occasion where he needs to dress smart)

I don't know how he pulled it off, but the starry sweater, topped with a lightweight hoodie topped with the signature longcoat made his look among the more iconic for me. Also, he changed clothes probably the most out of any Doctor so far, it's a bit unfair to say he has one distinct style other than hair growth series to series.

    3. Tom Baker - Iconic scarf and poet fedora along with poufy hair
    4. Jon Pertwee - another variety doctor with puff shirts and colorful velvet jackets and cloak
    5. William Hartnell - The first doctor setting the foundation (love the cloak and hat)
    6. David Tennant - Suits and convers are a great balance of dress and casual (long overcoat is great)
    7. John Hurt - Loved the ragged war/nomad travelers clothes
    8. Paul McGann - loved how he wore Victorian clothes in them-modern times
    9. Peter Davison - Nice cricket outfit but never got the celery
    10. Christopher Eccelson - Leather jacket is nice but no variety and only wore dark, muted, or black clothes
    11. Jodi Whittaker - Her outfit never really stuck with me, I'm just use to the suits especially Capaldi's wardrobe
    12. Patrick Troughton - Basic dress code
    13. Sylvester McCoy - not enough question marks
    14. Colin Baker - atrocious colors and pattern

Pants: I love the checkered or plaid pants, black pants
Shoes: Lace-up leather boots, converse, chelsea boots, sneakers

    Quirks: New catchphrase

Peter Davidson''s celery was explained late in his appearances as being able to revive... someone... from ...something... with it's smell. Obviously a retcon at the time, but at least they tried!
Glad to hear someone else liked Sylvester McCoy though, he had an element of danger under the clown, he was Coyote, The Trickster. He could have been a bad man to have as an enemy, if the scripts had allowed.

I think the celery was explained, though vaguely, in his first appearance. While he was still dazed from regeneration, he went into that house and began devouring veggies off a platter. I thought he said he needed it to revive, and putting the celery on his lapel acted as a gauge. The celery absorbed toxins and changed color. It's been awhile since I have seen it, I admit.

I would have split Capaldi and Smith into 2 separate categories. They have 2 different styles of their costumes. while the main components were the same they were more distinctly different. I prefer Smith's first look with the brown tweed jacket and the braces over the later look with the purple jacket and the waistcoats. I prefer the first one because it felt more like mad quirky professor style and while i know the second look was more grown up and had that Victorian style to it it just felt bland and boring to me. Capaldi again to me had 2 different styles to his look. His first series was the more sleek, clean cut, tailored look and while it looks cool i am not one for it. it feels too buttoned up. I like his later look with the hoodie and the longer hair and the sunglasses and stuff. Made him feel like an aged rock star which just looks awesome and fits better with Capaldi because he used to be a rocker in his youth because he has said he can genuinely play guitar and was in bands and stuff in his younger days.

  • @kali3665
    @kali3665 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

It started with a Victorian cum Edwardian style as interpreted from a non-human viewpoint, which started fading around the Sixth Doctor's era. I kinda miss that approach in the NuWho area. And I still am not sure what Thirteen is wearing.
I got used to McCoy's costume once he replaced the light jacket with the darker one (I always liked McCoy, at least after they burned through all of Six's leftover stories), but I really HATE the question mark motif started by John Nathan-Turner and the Fifth Doctor.
But, of course, the costume that symbolizes ALL Doctors is Tom Baker's Toulouse-Lautrec/Oscar Wilde style. He's the one Doctor you can really identify even if you know nothing else about the series or the character. Sharp, flamboyant, and definitive. And he was the ONLY Doctor who REALLY wore the traditional Gallifrey Prydonian robes well.
My fave? I think I'll stick with Troughton's cosmic hobo style. I always liked this more subtle style for the Doctor, which is one of the things I appreciated about Eccleston and then (to a degree) Tennant: nice and simple, without too much of the eccentric. That, of course, would change over time (and every return by Troughton seemed to make his costume more stereotypical), but I liked it.

Having said that, the modern Doctors' outfits do tend to be somewhat ordinary by comparison. (Although I thought Matt Smith's bowtie was a nice touch.) Peter Capaldi's coat was a nice attempt at "throwback" look.
