    Hi Martyn. Helpful video. I’m battling pretty drastic PH swings at the minute. Morning time it’s around 7 / 7.5 and evening it’s up to 9.
    Seeing the fish flash and in the evening jumping out the surface of the water.
    Tried numerous things to stabilise it including increased maintenance and water changes, PH buffers, phosphate reducers and all have been ineffective.
    I am interested in trying the oyster shells as a remedy, however I have a pressure filter so there is no room to put any additional media in there.
    Can the oyster shells be bagged up and just put into the main part of the pond rather than in the filtration system?

    • @boxtriker
      @boxtriker  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes you can bag them and put in pond but sped out surface area wise with it and a flow of water across them. Crushed shell is better and watch out that you don't get conned and its real oyster shell not just any old shell

    Well done Phil and Asterisk on the comp win.
    Martyn, is there a formula for the oyster shells, ie 1ltr=1000g, if you put too much in, will it not raise kh too far?
    Be careful of that zeolite, once overloaded with ammonia it will leech it back into pond, unless recharged using salt, only really supposed to be used in emergency, too rid pond quickly of ammonia

    • @boxtriker
      @boxtriker  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Marek I don't think you can OD on oyster shell Oyster shells stabilise the pH / KH-value which prevents pH crash. If the KH value drops to this starts to dissolve the shells until balance is reached again so it dissolves as needed I swap that bag out every 2 months for a fresh one and have used it for over 10 years. As i said its a soft water fix for the most but can be used in hard water where you mite get a crash due to rain or the like. The zeolite like wise for the norm I use it winter only and swap the bags 2 - 3 weeks I just had a little to much ammonia for my liking and the bags are out of the pond now in a salt bath ready for that. Happy ponding

    Definitely some good info on basics to have a solid foundation for water quality. I always sprinkle baking soda in my ponds before heavy rains since it’s more acidic here. Stability is definitely the key!

      Is it no good with hard water ?

    • @boxtriker
      @boxtriker  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kevin it will stop a crash on hard water as well if it go's low as the water go's acid it brakes down more of the shell raising it. So hard water would only use it when it go's low but soft water is always low

      Keeping that Ph in place is a game I have played for years down hear with soft water from the tap the oyster shell is near drop in and forget but Kh is also low that takes bicarb soda once at the right Kh spot I need to add a cup full every 4 weeks or winter cup and a half if we have been having lots of rain. Adding that clay to your pond must do some of this I think that's why I did not get on with it messed the ph and kh round for a time down hear

    Strange how your getting a PH of 7 with a KH of 6, PH around 7 to 7.1 should have a KH of 1 or less, the only thing i can think of is your plants are swinging the PH quite a lot, i consider anything under a PH of 7.0 a crash as its very unstable and detrimental to the filter bacteria.
    I learned the hard way last year when my PH dropped to 6.2, first time in 15 years, since then i have been strictly monitoring PH almost daily with a digital hanna meter and can pretty much predict what my KH is just from the PH reading.
    I prefer bicarbonate of soda to raise PH as its a lot more effective and cleaner to do, the main problem with a low PH is the toxicity of Nitrite, a PH reading of 7 is very toxic to koi with blood poisoning issues unless your running a level of salt in the water to counter it.
    What food are you using, i always used coppens but changed out this year and my water has never been so good, coppens is ok but very fatty and produces a lot of waste and a serious amount of tannin

      Mate I nip down to Brixham down hear a oyster and shell fish seller he collects the old shells after eating at the local restaurants crush's them and gets a second sale as chicken grit to the local farmers you can get the stuff in small bags most places but farm wholesales should have large bags
