  • SKYROAM SOLIS review and coupon code: TechGadgetsCanada.com This small portable Wi-Fi hotspot called the Skyroam Solis is a travelers dream, in theory. In reality, it’s a finicky device that needs careful attention, pre-planning and a boatload of patience to use. But when it works… you’ll be thrilled, amazed and ecstatic.
The Solis is a small hockey puck-sized device that keeps you connected no matter where you are. You turn it on, and activate a pre-paid Daypass that grants you access to the internet for a full 24 hours.
Skyroam connects to cellular networks in 120 countries. Pretty much anywhere there’s cellular service, you’ll get internet.
I had a lot of trouble getting my Skyroam set up and working. If you’re having trouble with your Skyroam device, I hope these detailed instructions can help. For more, head to TechGadgetsCanada.com and search Skyroam for helpful tips.
As an aside, I don’t read other reviews of a product before I do my own. I don’t want anything to colour my personal experience. After I finished my Skyroam review, I went online to Amazon and read through the customer reviews. Many, many users have had major problems.
My best advice for using this device is to register and get logged in, and test the device BEFORE you depart on a trip.
Register your device and/or log into your account at bsp.skyroam.co...
Turn the Skyroam on using the power button on the side of the device. You’ll need to hold it for about 3-4 seconds. The tiny light on it should turn green. (If it turns red, that means the battery is low. Plug it in using the cable provided by Skyroam)
Wait for the Wi-Fi On light (the large round button on top of the device) to stop flashing.
On your phone, laptop or tablet, go to your device's Wi-Fi settings menu, and select your Skyroam device as your Wi-Fi option.
On that same device, go to a.skyroam.com and log into your account.
If the page doesn’t refresh or update, force refresh the web page on your laptop or smartphone's web browser after a couple minutes. It may take a dozen attempts and several minutes to connect. In my experience this was not unusual. Frustrating, but not unusual.
Go to Status along the bottom of the screen. Click it and it'll flip you another screen. You should now have the option to Start a Daypass. If not, refresh again.
When we finally got it working, we used the Skyroam to provide Wi-Fi for mapping, then used it to connect to the web and look up facts and info about our destination.
Of course, we were also able to get iMessages, emails and social media alerts too.
The battery life on Skyroam Solis was easily 12 hours.
Overall review of Skyroam Solis Wi-Fi hotspot
Once I got the Skyroam Solis working, it was outstanding, and made our extended trip so much more enjoyable. We were able to stay connected to our work, to family, via social media when we wanted to, and we were able to find our way around easily using Google maps.
I can’t underline enough how important it is for you to get the device working before you go on your trip.
Overall, I can definitely recommend Skyroam as a reliable, infinitely handy Wi-Fi hotspot device for your next trip abroad.
You can buy a Skyroam for $149USD or rent one all from Skyroam’s website. If you use the code TECHGADGETSCANADA you can get 10% off your purchase.
I really enjoyed my Skyroam experience and plan to continue using it, so I’ve activated their affiliate links at TechGadgetsCanada.com. This means if you purchase a Skyroam by clicking there I get a small commission for referring you. For that I thank you very much for considering purchasing using one of these links as it helps keep the old blog afloat.

It's ironic as I live in the London (UK) and will be travelling to vancouver and the rocky mountains this summer. Will be purchasing this as my mobile carrier in the UK offers a day pass for like £10 a day which is alot and is capped at 500mb (for 3G max, no 4G), beyond that I will be charged per mb. Good thing is that this device will still give me inclusive internet beyond 500mb, which is useful, even though it will be throttled down to 2G. Great review Erin!

Hey Erin, I was wondering if you can do an updated review of the devices from Solis? They have a 5G one and Canadian plans. I can't find anywhere on youtube where someone shows what it's like using the device, example show how streaming netflix looks. Is it choppy? Can you use the device while plugged in etc? Cheers.

Great idea! It’s been a while since I used my Skyroam device. I have found it’s almost just easier and in some cases more cost effective to go for a location, specific Sim card or eSIM. Might be worth checking out again as I will be doing a road trip this spring. Thanks for the suggestion.

Wouldnt even sign in without already being connected to a wifi. Even told me i didnt have any day passes left when i had two remaining. Only when i loaded more onto my account it showed that i still had two days left

I think that is only in foreign countries.... its the same as using your own mobile phone. After 500 mb it is dramatically reduced. But in the USA it should not be that way. I can't seem to find a review on this for the USA specifically.

Hey, thanks for the warning about giving enough time to set it up. I leave this weekend for a trip to China so will try to work out the kinks today/tomorrow. QUESTION: how does the 5 day pass work? ...once I activate the code will it be 5 consecutive days (a straight 120 hours) or only activate the 24 hours of wifi when I turn it on during that next period?

    • @ErinLawrenceTV
      @ErinLawrenceTV  5 ปีที่แล้ว

You need to activate each day pass individually. So you can start the day at any time, and then you get a full 24 hrs. Tomorrow you'd start fresh and activate another pass. Enjoy your trip! Would love to hear how this works for you. Post on TechGadgetsCanada.com

This is more expensive than roaming on my phone for 5dollar a day and I can use everything on my plan. This is not cheap and not worth it.

A couple of years ago I bought the International plan on my ATT phone for $5 or $9 per day, but then I got hit with $700+ roaming fees and other fees. Everytime I wanted to see a page on my safari web browser the data was charged. Like $25 for so many mb - at the end I had to fight with ATT and get some refunded. ATT plan was so not what they advertised.

great honest review! I'm going to Europe this summer, and thought this might be the device for me, but I couldn't imagine dealing with troubleshooting while travelling. I think I might just pay the $12/a day and have international roaming on my cell phone enabled instead. Thanks!!!

Get a SIM in any EU country - it will work across the EU as if it's at home. Three UK also works in many other countries (72 globally) at no extra cost - for example you get unlimited data in UK and 10GB in those 72 countries for about $20 A MONTH.
$12/day or over$360/month is an insane ripoff - don't fall for it. It shouldn't be much more than $12 per DAY.

    • @PaoloMariaLuino
      @PaoloMariaLuino 5 ปีที่แล้ว

@@bobbastian760 this is ok if you travel in Europe. I travel in Spain and Italy and in EU we have no more extra fees for roaming.
      BUT...
I bought this device because every year I travel to Manila and last year when I landed in Oman I received a phone call from office (my bad!)... more...
WIFI airport connections are sometimes not easy to set up and when you are in a "business mode" every second is precious... so I left "on the table" 100 USD in few minutes...

I hate this device. I hate their marketing B/S, a device that hardly works, the ongoing conversations with their support in the Philippines who doesn't have any decision making power and constantly need to talk to their "second level support". They bombard me with emails with their highly annoying marketing messages and no feedback after I have provided review. And it's so expensive if compared to any local prepaid SIM cards!!!

I bought it 8 months ago. Could not be more sorry. You get throttled REALLY quickly and it is unusable. Buy a SIM card and teather. That’s what I did in UK. MUCH cheaper. Now I have an expensive orange paperweight.

Erin Lawrence Scotland. Was in hotel in Edinburgh with poor internet so I fired up the device. The login screen showed 4G but after 15-20 min of Facebook activity and email it showed 2G and web pages were loading very slowly.! It said if I wanted 4G I had to pay for another day. Cheaper to use SIM card.

I am a bit confused about the rental... I paid about $8 per day to rent...Does that include the day pass or do I need to purchase in addition to the rental. It is not clear to me... Thank you in advance.

Wifi in Australia isn’t that bad. There are very cheap mobile plans in Australia on cellular 4G speed - same speed you will get with this. Look into getting a local SIM card for your mobile and a data plan of about $40/month will get you 10gb or more per month with no throttling.
