    My Experience Traveling with the Skyroam Solis
    Recently, I had the good fortune of visiting Hong Kong. While this was my first time getting to try out T-Mobile’s free international capabilities, I was also excited to activate the Solis I purchased shortly after CES. As luck would have it, the perfect opportunity to test the device arose while my wife and I were at Hong Kong Disneyland.
    Connection speed on mobile
    During my visit to the park, I needed to upload a video I had shot of the new Ant-Man and the Wasp ride. Unfortunately, even with my T-Mobile One Plus plan, my regular mobile data speed wasn’t cutting it. So that’s when I knew it was time to bust out my Solis, cash in the Unlimited Global WiFi day pass that was included in my device purchase, and see how Skyroam performed. Thankfully, the WiFi the Skyroam provided helped my upload move along at a much faster clip and was completely uploaded within a few minutes.
    Battery life
    Although that task was my main concern, with my day pass activated, I figured I’d leave the Solis on to see how the battery would hold up to a day at the park. To my (somewhat) surprise, it managed to last through the whole thing and still had plenty of charge when we arrived back at our hotel room. Specifically, it went from 96% to 30% over the course of 10 hours under consistent use.
    Device temperature
    Speaking of “constant use,” I was also impressed by how literally cool the Solis stayed. I’ve heard complaints about hotspots getting too, well, hot - but I kept my device in my bag the entire day and could barely notice a temperature difference when I touched it. Granted, my bag was fairly roomy and airy so it may have been a bit of a different story had it been in my pocket but, nevertheless, it was nice to know I didn’t have to worry about it overheating.
    Power bank usage
    Something that Skyroam boasts about the Solis is that, in addition to being a mobile hotspot, it can also be used as a power bank. Therefore, when my phone needed a bit of charge, I once again turned to the Solis for testing. At first, I thought I might actually be out of luck as I had forgotten to pack the USB-C to USB adapter that comes with the device, but I actually had an Apple dongle in my bag that did the trick. Still, I have to admit that my experience left something to be desired.
    First of all, while I neglected to time my before and after battery level, it seemed that my iPhone charged fairly slowly while connected to the Solis. Conversely, the battery level of the Solis dropped considerably faster while I was charging my phone than when it was only doing single duty as a hotspot. For those reasons, while it’s nice to know the Solis has power bank possibilities if you need them in a pinch, if your main concern is WiFi, I’d pack a dedicated charger instead.
    Connection speed on desktop
    In addition to their $9 per day Unlimited Global WiFi option, Skyroam also offers a $99 per month option. Similar to how your day pass is good for 24 hours from when you activate, a month pass is not a calendar month but, instead, allows you to use your hotspot as much as you want during a 30-day timeframe. Doing some quick math, if you plan on using your hotspot for more than 11 days in a month’s time, this plan will save you a bit of money compared to the per day price.
    Another option is Skyroam’s GoData plans. For $9 a month, you can utilize 1 GB of data on your hotspot. While GoData plans will renew automatically, you can cancel at any time.
    For context on how much 1 GB of data is, I used just under a gigabyte during my day in the park - but that’s mostly because I uploaded a 545 MB video.

    This is one of the best gadgets that I have spent money on. Used it for my trip recently and the performance is top notch thanks to the Mediatek chipset. The thing that surprised me the most was its battery life. Goes through the entire day on one time full charge & constant use for almost 10-12 hours.

    *Would you say this makes for a good "backup" internet source? Like in the event of a power outage or if I go camping, I can just buy a day pass & still be able to work/attend class?*

    • @nondescriptnyc
      @nondescriptnyc 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Mykie DYDSS With my work entirely turning virtual, it’s essential that I have a backup WiFi because our home Internet can go down periodically (we’re in NYC where, in 2020, we STILL don’t get reliable Internet!!!). So, I purchased this device...and I’d say this device is adequate and it certainly beats tethering on your phone if you have regular Zoom meetings/classes. I use day passes, and it has been working okay.
      The only issue is that I don’t trust their throttling policy AT ALL. Presumably, you have 1GB daily before throttling kicks in, dramatically slowing down the connection, and I can usually go through an hour on Zoom meetings just fine without throttling. But I have had a couple of occasions when, after sending a few emails without attachments, I got an “overuse” warning and throttling kicked in-and, when that happens, things that requires video (e.g., Zoom, TH-cam, etc.) will get “choppy.” I contacted customer support on both occasions, but I just got a generic “we are sorry but it’s out policy and you can always activate another day pass to restore service” email back. So, I ended up activating a new pass (i.e., ended up spending $18/day rather than $9)-but that has only happened 2 out of May by 10 times I used Solis.
      So, while I won’t recommend it as your primary ISP at home, as a backup, it seems adequate. My colleagues have MiFi through Verizon, etc. and they seem to have similar issues, at times and, more importantly, their service and devices are a lot more expensive and/or require monthly subscription.

    Skyroam is not an ethical company. They run promotions and then block the product from being ordered at the discount price so they can increase the cost when the order is processed. Their customer service is incredibly lacking. I do not recommend this company, there are others that offer a better product and better service.

    • @nondescriptnyc
      @nondescriptnyc 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      trudy trudy It is true that, if you can get local data SIMs, that would be better. But, if you travel like I do (or I used to before COVID), purchasing SIMs and replacing them on my devices can get overwhelming. So, this device is definitely convenience. As for the speed, I generally find that it is faster in big cities than in the countryside, for some reason. Also, I find it that it is noticeably slower in developing countries. Most importantly, I don’t trust their throttling policy at all, as they’ve imposed throttling literally minutes after my activating the day pass.

    I would recommend only using it in non developed countries where buying a sim card and language barrier is a problem as you may get scammed. Also using it in poorer countries with slower bandwidth and dropped connection using Skyroam is probably the best bet. So it all depends which country you're going to.

    Question: For the day pass, it is "unlimited" data but is the speed constant? Reading other people's review, it slows down once you've hit certain data limit. eg: you get 4G speeds for your first 1GB. Once you've used up all 1Gb, you can still use, but speed slows down to 3G. This true?

    • @FioneyMoney
      @FioneyMoney  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I went over 1 GB when I used my day pass and didn’t notice a slow down. However, they do note that you may experience reduce speed due to their “data prioritization practice.” They don’t really state when that could take effect but, yes, it seems they do throttle large data consumers :-/
