Honestly, Kronika being alternate Shang Tsung gave me the biggest sigh of relief I've had with this franchise.

The characters' writing is so bland, they are either white or black, extremely good or bad people, and nothing in between. Many things make absolutely no sense like when General Shoa gets beaten by everyone although he's supposed to be a general who went on hundreds of battles. It is honestly a trash story and the worst in a while.
Being able to choose your fighter near the end was honestly really cool and I hope they do it again for future games

My favorite part of MK1R story mode is when that old man sitting at the bar minding his own business while Raiden and Bi-Han Sub-Zero are fighting, and when Raiden's arms got frozen by Bi-Han at the bar counter, the old man just picks off a piece of ice from him, he was like "hmm ninjas, must be Monday, oh an ice cube, cheers dude"
probably knows full well who Madam Bo and the Lin Kuei really are and knows no real shit's going down. That, or he really is just an old dude who's fresh outta fucks for the day / life.
the best part is the fights are all random, meaning if you play through the final chapter again you can get different combo characters, upwards of like 30 different possibilities.

They're going off of the MK11 expansion story. In that one you can win as Liu Kang, *or* as Shang Tsung. The time line splitting simply means it's acknowledging both of those endings.
However, as later in the story will reveal, it's acknowledging the endings that ALL of the characters could win the single player mode and become a titan and the keeper of time.

@@manuelacuna4188Okay yeah, technically there is an ending that just ends up with her giving up on her life, so she never does become a titan. So there's a timeline out there that just doesn't have a time-keeper for its hourglass and *just keeps going*
Interesting idea would be to make a spinoff for *that* timeline and continue on after the events of that game.
There is another answer to this, though. And it's the power of stepping back on their decisions. She could have simply made it so that he didn't become a revenant, *but still* met her mom under different circumstances, and was born.
Regardless, all of this equates to nonsense anyway. After all, by the time they defeat Kronika, they exist in a place that is outside of times reach. The timeline is rewound all the way to the past. Technically what all of them did *should* have had them *all* never be born, and this includes Liu and Shang Tsung. So if they didn't just turn to dust and disappear, why does she?
It's called inconsistent writing.
But regardless, they knew their target audience was here for the KOMBAT anyway, and not the story.

For clarification on story Quan Chi and Ermac; you are correct, they are using placeholder movesets.
Quan Chi is a stripped down version of MK11 Shang Tsung, and Ermac is a stripped down version of MK11 Noob Saibot.
My guess is that they were both planned to be base roster, but they couldn't be finished in time, thus we have them as DLC.
Edit: I am also assuming that the Khameleon kameo is in the same boat, although she seems to be the most "finished" of the three.

The Armageddon style ending was just so rushed and anticlimactic. Up until that point, it was genuinely so so good. That being said, probably still the best MK story wise and character development.
The time line garbage is so annoying. They're basically saying anything can happen at any time and nothing has any real stakes. It's horrible writing.
I hate the ridiculous timeline stuff, it went crazy once all the other titan heroes returned.

There’s cool stuff from the 3D era that has continued to be as entertaining. Sure they’re not as pretty looking but their stories and aesthetic is beautiful.

To further cement that the whole story is that the Titan Shang Tsung should have been Cary Hiroyuki Tagawa and voiced by him. Would have been a great twist and also brought him back in for a cameo. He also plays like his former self too so having your MK1 character going up against him with his Ermac lifts, ninja slides, and fireballs would have been quite OP and feel like a proper boss.
Would have also been good to see Robin Shou, and the cast of the 1995 MK film make a cameo in helping the good side. Bring in known variations of Goro from the original 2D era version where he literally has no neck, a small pumpkin head and giant timber arms, with the 1995 MK version with his long torso, all with unique fighting styles would have been masterful.
the first half of the story had me completely hooked. all the character work felt compelling and the intrigue really made for an interesting story. but then prime shang tsung revealed himself and everything just fell apart. i feel like a much better choice would have been to keep this games story in only liu kangs timeline, and have the good guys win and the bad guys escape to fight another day. then have a post credit scene that reveals "kronika" as prime shang so the next game (or story mode expansion) could be entirely focused on the crazy timeline collision shit without ruining the integrity of the story they started this one with

I think you can expand even more the universe with the multiverse thing.
It's mostly just Fan Bait. Any company can take a popular character from any part of the universe that died and/or from another IP and people would eat it up without giving it a second thought.
Without going into the details of the gameplay, i feel that the multiverse stuff kinda ruined the story and if it stoped at saving edenia it'd have been one of the best mortal kombat stories if not the best

They have different stories, the dude at the beginning says he was a farmer with a daughter, Baraka was a merchant with "children" so I don't think so

I actually enjoyed most of the game, I didn't even mind the alternate timelines. Seeing a bunch of mashed up characters during the Armageddon was also really fascinating. However I felt like the end was extremely rushed, with the final battle being such a disappointment. Kronika was a better final boss than Shang & Quan, like a quick 1 round fight, and that's it?
btw, Scorpion's voiced by Daisuke Tsuji, the same guy who voiced Jin Sakai in Ghost of Tsushima.

They missed a chance to show us how previous generations of fighters put a fight against other world. Would of been nice to see when earth realm started their 9 losing streak before lu kang came in and saved them. Maybe even further back to the first ever tournament. Maybe even further back before the first tournament and what lead to that even happening.

Hell they didn't even have to do that lol. Like I'd love if they went further back in time and fleshed out the first ever Mk tournament, but they could just go with the Great Kung Lao era. They teased The Great Kung Lao last game and then they just reference him and make us go back to regular Kung Lao and Liu Kang lite, because that sure as hell isn't Raiden (although, I will say he's pretty wholesome in this lol). I enjoyed Shang, Sindel and Mileena are more interesting but The Great Kung Lao should have definitely been the new chosen one. Maybe he is the Liu Kang type character with Shujinko being the Kung Lao. But they could twist it and have Kung Lao be more like Luke and Shujinko similar to Anakin (maybe he falls and joins Onaga/Shang Tsung/Havik/The One Being or whoever the new big bad is. Idk lol, just something cooler than the same as we normally get but with a twist

Whose idea was it and where did they get the inspiration for a tournament? Who was the ruler of underworld and what made him actually agree with the rules. Did the elder gods themselves come down and force everyone to participate? Has it always been just between earthrealm and otherworld? Did the other realms get conquered because they lost in previous tournaments? Was there ever a time humans actually won 10 times in a row?

Most people do not like Time Travel in Fandoms. My most likely guess it's because it retcons The lore & story of whatever Fandom your playing or watching.
Exactly that, but it can be done well if you plan. It could’ve worked well in Mortal Kombat’s case had it been intended.
Hot take here, but I don’t hate mk11 like most people, and I thought the story was okay, but Kronika sucked, and the story lowkey did, too. If they took away Kronika but built her up for the newest game, it would’ve worked. Also, if they didn’t have any retcons, people would’ve liked it more.
I can understand that many people believe in Time Travel & Wonder how it works. But time travel doesn't always have to be present in Movies & Video Games all the time! But yes, Time Travel can be done well if correctly planned. But regardless! Time Traveling does retcon the Lore and Story for the most part. It's a bit Tad silly that this is the case in recent Video Games and Movies.

I don't understand why they made Liu Kang intentionally fuck with the villians' lives to give them "meaningless existences", it literally changes nothing as they go right back to doing the evils again. You know what would've been better? Making their lives better and giving them a purpose beyond their selfish desires, that would've been a better plan than causing them to suffer a fate not of their own choosing.
The point was that they had the opportunity to live good humble lives.

It’d of been cool if he made Shang Tsung his disciple. And maybe he sometimes struggled to do the right thing at times, but in the end he genuinely was good now.

Instead Liu decided to make Shao an army general, and make Tsung be a resentful villager (but also like 100 years younger for whatever reason)
I liked the story until they brought in the alternate timeline’s, time travel and multiverse nonsense.

Liu Kang took Shang’s power but didn’t plan their (Quanchi) fates, LLk let them choose what to do. But Shang will forever be this horrible person that enjoys the suffering of others. Shang Tsung could’ve had a better life if he didn’t choose too scam people and living the terrible life he lived until damachi came.

Well this shoa is thousands years old and well experienced. The milleena in MK X was literally created during the mk2 segment of mk9. So she was literally a lil older than 3/4ths of the kombat kids by the time she had Possesion of the amulet by MKX.
I would have preferred the storyline to focus on Shang Tsung's new era vs Liu Kang's new era instead of going full multiverse and forcing an "Armageddon" ending just for the sake of it
Or better just let current Shang Tsung be the bad guy for the entire story then bring in Titan Shang come in for the Story DLC.

@@quiet4034 I mean, it does make sense but it has very little impact on the story since the few OG characters we see are essentially dropped upon seeing them save for Kitana who gets one whole scene where she immediately dies with no fanfare. Again, should’ve just saved the time travel shenanigans until the story DLC.

Quan chi lost Melanin privilege
Kronika shouldve been fleshed out in her own trilogy, shes a whole tier above elder gods and the cutscenes fodderized her and discredited her actual power, Kang said at some point she lost her sanity due to mettling with the flow of time and in 11 when she is visibly using her power, if her goal of "balance" wasnt achieved she rage quit the server and rebooted it, her sanity, (As Kano showed in SB) got her to the point she even revealed herself to all enemies when she pretty much had it on lock until she became unhinged. She wanted balance, was essentially neutral, but couldn't cope with external forces getting further than she intended. Seeing as she was unable to achieve her vision, she got sloppy over time in her madness and a lot of people dont see she's pretty broken. I have sympathy towards her character, but they rushed her concept. She was essentially timeless so everything she went through she had to cope with mostly alone. Its sad man, Geras was the impartial creation she sought the world to be. Suffering and enduring at the same time. Her backstory would be lit. And missed opportunity to make her playable, but yeah she survived multiple MK11 endings so this "trend" of "timelines and multiversity" oversaturated proper character development to accept ass pulls and new era retcons. I was happy to see her, and even happier for the swerve, Shang was the threat she always knew, and Kang was the hope she had to hinder, when they collided, even she had to move her hand. Thats the enormity of her impact. No one unaware stood a ghost of a chance. Hell, an Unrestricted Trio of Geras, Shinnok, and Cetrion, wouldve been enough, people give too much credit to the og villains, but she put all of that in place. She real life got bored or lost sight of her original goal that made her take risks and make mistakes against beings she literally had a hand in creating.

Mk1 was doing good until the multiverse came back into the plot . I loved the intimacy the game had . How it felt like it was Liu kang hanging in his fishbowl he created for his fish to flourish . We could have gotten the multiverse stuff in like 2-3 games but they weren’t confident enough and basically lied wha the plot would be
Shao Zero = MK 9 when you beat the ladder with Cyber Sub-Zero. I have to continue the Armageddon with each character to see who i fight against.

@@froggo5690 mk11 was supposed to book end the netherrealm era and do a different twist and reboot the story completely with fresh eyes having the great kung lao as the focus with cheh kang or what ever ancestor character they invent for the character not raiden being rebooted in liu kangs place as a Chinese guy and modern kung lao and utilize the ancestors of these established characters and familiar faces of the 3d era games

The good ending and the bad ending was unexpected which I love, I didnt understand where it was going until that plot twist I loved.

For a franchise, Mortal Kombat seems to be wrong name for the game series. I mean whoever dies in Mortal Kombat always come back from dead time reset or no reset. There's no character in Mortal Kombat who stays dead and remains dead and does not come back for the sequel.

I think they did everything right. We got the most wanted 3D ear charecters, we got Baraka and Reptile chapters, we got both timelines as caonon and we got some actually good storytelling until the main clusterfuck starts.
Shang tsung from mk11 made sense, but making every mk11 arcade ending canon was just silly
