When I was a little kid, I used to watch spongebob when we went on road trips. He crafted what was one of the greater parts of my childhood. His show was so great, that a subculture of humor was just spongebob references. He will be missed.

It's sad that he had to die in his fifties, and from illness. Hillenburg certainly brought lots of laughter to kids and families. Only a few people have had such tremendous success with a cartoon character/series.
Sadly, I see that the negative comments have already started appearing here, with people whining about how dumb the show is. Was it supposed to be elevating, like Masterpiece Theatre?? No, its aim was to give the audience a chuckle ... not unlike a sitcom. For goodness' sake, it's on Nickelodeon, fools; get over yourselves.
Anyway -- Here's to SpongeBob's creator. Thanks for the comedy.
Why would people say that about SpongeBob? It's a show that captured generations and made an impact on the animation industry! It should be the last thing people would ever make negative about!
@@r3n3gad33 My hunch is, either they're sour jerks who actually are sincere in their ridiculous views, or they're trolls looking to get angry reactions from others just for kicks. Either case is sad. But it doesn't matter, because the world of Bikini Bottom is all about good things and positivity, and that is infectious.

Back in the 90s when Rocko's Modern Life and Ren and Stimpy worked towards adults and shows like Rugrats and Hey Arnold worked towards kids, a show came along that decided to work for both kids and adults and that show was Stephen Hillenburg's Spongebob Squarepants. Stephen Hillenburg created something for what I consider to be the Blazing Saddles of animation. It was hilarious, self-aware, and had enough social commentary for kids to enjoy and adults to laugh hysterically at. For the the first three seasons and first film, it was a show that had jokes that not only kids could understand but also take a jab at the culture at the time that made adults appreciate it as well. It was a cultural phenomenon for animation and television and it breaks my heart knowing Stephen Hillenburg died from ALS yesterday. RIP Stephen Hillenburg, you gave us so many memories from one of the greatest cartoon shows ever created.

spongebob is such an incredible gift that he brought to the world, as a kid it was my absolute favourite show with my whole room being decorated spongebob. i even remember seeing the first movie in theatres. i remember buying a magazine all about spongebob when i was little and seeing pictures of the voice actors and of him, and little snippets about them. this makes me so sad, rest in peace stephen hillenburg

As much as I was emotionless when I heard Stan Lee died, this hurt--I didn't know the guy but to hear that Hillenburg passed due to an illness--one that's like cancer in its incurability---he will most certainly be missed. Meanwhile Betty White still lives such a shame that Hillenburg passed away--Rest In Peace.

I used to use spongebob episodes as a unit of time. My mom would say, “I’ll be home in 2 spongebob episodes.” R.I.P Stephen
My parents did that too. When we would drive long distances on vacation, I would ask how much longer and they would say about 5 Soongebob episodes.

My son loved "Spongebob", whereas I...'did not'. That changed over time, and I was still watching the show after my son 'moved on' to more grownup pursuits. As Mssr. Hillenburg said, the charm of the show was/is Spongebob's innate goodness and determination to 'do the right thing' (as best he can, anyway).

Stephen deserved more that this short of a life. He went on and made many great things. He was and still is a legend. He is the source of many childhoods throughout this past 20 years. Everyone from Nickelodeon to the fans and to the meme community mourn this tragic passing arriving just after Stan lee.

Since the day I was born, to now at 18 years old, Spongebob has been there my whole entire life and I grew up with it. When I think of cartoons, it's probably the first one that comes to mind. I have great memories as a kid watching it and it's brought so much enjoyment. Thank you Stephen for these great memories, because without you, I wouldn't have them. Thank you for creating one of the best cartoons in TV history. Thank you for everything. You will be dearly missed.

This is so true.... I mean when I first went on to the Nickelodeon channel, Spongebob built part of my childhood. Stephen Hillenburg is such an a amazing person. Even though some people thought that the cartoons were dumb, he kept going. Just to make sure people were still happy. So even though there is hate in the world, we should be grateful that he kept going.

God I’ve been crying for hours, I was a mess at school. This man brought my whole life together. I realize it’s weird to say, but his cartoon brought joy to my life. No matter what was going on in my messed up life spongebob never seemed to fail me. Now I have no idea how much I’ll get to see of Stephen’s creation. Every happy memory of mine included Spongebob. I will miss you so much Stephen, I know you’re in a better place now and deserve it for the joy you’ve brought to our lives.
