I had an ongoing war with my former neighbour. I wasn't even able to set foot outside my back door and he would start ranting and raving at me. He'd wait until I went out and then come in my garden to vandalise plants, including killing trees. He threw mud at my walls, eggs at my windows and stole things (I even caught him sneaking through my back door once). He told friends, family and visiting tradesmen to park right up against my gates and in my driveway, threatened delivery men at my address and even drove his car at one of them.
I reported him to police 4 times until I realised it was never going to get me anywhere. Hopeless.
We were absolutely overjoyed when he died.
So, there are neighbours from hell, and neighbours that can go to hell with my blessing.

We had a similar thing but we'd also come home after a long day at work and our gas and electricity would be turned off at mains. Due to a neighbour reporting a smell of Gas. When I went to the address that reported the leak which was right up the road the address was empty. I then approached our eldery neighbour. I could see she was lying straight away. We had nothing but problems. Ended up having to send solicitors letters and get council involved. Nobody took us seriously and thought we were picking on her. It was then she accused us of stealing her plants and pouring weed killer on her plants . According to her I was seen so I told her to phone police she wouldn't so I did. I thought we wouldn't have to put up with it for much longer she ended living until she was 107. Lol
But after we put a 7ft fence and gates up she couldn't get on our property or see what we were doing. Best money we ever spent. Plus getting her threatened with eviction. She paid council workers to damage our fence and would pay people to damage our car. We were always getting huge steel balls fired through our window screens while car was parked om our drive. I recorded her spreading her lies to tradesmen and anyone who would listen. Finally we got enough evidence that we were actually believed. She throw acid on my plants and would do anything to destroy my garden and property. Thank goodness for CCTV

cctv cameras are the best way to go in these situations!! with evidence, police have no choice but to charge the neighbour, it removes : he said - he said situations, where the police are unable to do anything,

Yeah, I know, mate. I say this to all my customers.
Funny thing is behind that hedge you can’t really see it because of the conifer. There’s a 6‘ x 6‘ fence panel that sat on two concrete gravel boards and the hedge is 2 foot above that still so really her privacy wasn’t compromised. Thanks for the comment!

Sadly, as that was unnecessary and prime nesting time too.

    • @QueenBabylonnia
      @QueenBabylonnia 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +13

What was unnecessary. Laylandi hedges for the average UK garden don’t work they shade the garden preventing growth of everything on shaded side. The hedge was on the owners land in front of a 7-8 foot fence and hedge was still higher. It would only take a couple of years to be the same again…. If it were my garden I would have had them chopped at base, then planted something different

Had a hawthorn tree to take down to 3 ft hedge height the other day .Was a tough one ,tangled up in phone lines ,had to be careful not to damage, the sun actually appeared and the temperature rocketed waste was being burned and the guy who was supposed to be helping let me down ,had to have my girlfriend helping me and she is not up to tree work .Then this woman was walking down the track nothing to do with the job.stops and says " bit of a funny time to cut trees isn't it" sorry why is that "with the birds nesting and all the rest of it .That was it I was hot ,hungry ,thirsty and tired and it was a tough job. I said I am not interested their were no nests you could see right through the tree.I told her to move out the way if she didn't want a branch to land on her ." That's a bit rude" she replied ....I said believe me love ,I haven't even started.😡...my girlfriend spoke to her and was a bit more easy going on her .,and she left .Why do they have to poke their bloody noses in.

I’ve had issues with my neighbour over MY hedge, he came round June 2023 demanding I cut my hedge, to which I politely refused saying I would cut it in August when I’m allowed to due to wildlife rules in UK making it an offence to cut hedges between April 1st and 31st July, so he then claimed my garden looks untidy for which everyone who knows me knows I keep a tidy garden. In August I cut the hedge the neighbour then came round and complained that I’d cut the hedge to short. So I informed him that it was My hedge on My land and I would cut it to a height of my choice, and if he didn’t like it then he should have purchased my property when it was for sale before I brought it, and told him to F off my property. He also complained about my fitted solar panels on roof saying it makes my property look busy, and complained about a charging lead from garage to my car looking untidy. I’ve asked him to prune his trees overhanging my property for which he has refused. So now when his tree dumps it’s leaves in my garden I get my leaf blower out and blow them into his garden as I was fed up with filling my green waste bin with his leaves from his tree or taking his garden waste to refuse site at my expense. I suffered a heart attack in 2021 and had 3 stents inserted, a day later I returned home and informed him I’d had a heart attack and would he mind clearing his leaves from my lawn which was killing my grass. He refused so on the day of returning home from hospital from heart attack and surgery I was clearing leaves from his tree in my property and almost collapsed with breathing problems and severe chest pain while he just stood by watching. So you can pick and choose our friends but your stuck with neighbours unless you move. My view is why pick an argument life’s to short and live and let live within reason.

I am so lucky the neighbours at the back of me knocked saying they had to have conifer tree removed however the men had to remove fence and asked if they could do it from my garden. I said of course I asked please if they could just be respectful over my boys grave 🐕Basil then it occurred to me. I asked what was happening to the tree next to conifer as branches hang over into my garden it was Basil's favourite which is why he's buried under it. He said oh Mary I'm sorry they said as soon as conifer removed the maple tree was leaning on it so would have to be removed as well. I sobbed bless him he got.no sorry it was his wife first she got teary. I said I understood I was just sad. 20 minutes later her husband came back said he was going to ask if a way to shorten so stable and Basil could still have his branches hanging over. They did I even made a video about it. How kind I'm so grateful 🙏

I bought a house with a 3 mtere cypress hedge around the garden The house was surrounded by 5 other properties and they all had something to say every time I cut my hedge ( annually). I eventually moved out of that house to a house with brick walls around the circumference of its garden. One of the neighbours has a cypress hedge along the edge of my garden and I routinely cut the blighter down ( with their permission) to maintain its height every year. This works very well. They're happy, I am happy.Their property is much larger than mine and my bit of maintenance is welcomed.I think that conifer hedges are a nightmare.

Small tip from a time served tradesman, ditch those nasty cheap DIY steps, and get a set of builders class 1 steps, with metal braces between the uprights and decent treads
Those abru things are an accident waiting to happen
Also cut a scaffold plank in half to seat them on,stops them sinking into the soil

It's a little better, I still feel a bit unsafe though.

As a self employed landscaper myself of 10 years here in rural Scotland I have to agree properties that back on or are side on to a neighbouring property can cause conflict with certain neighbours, some people like to moan, I am always courteous and professional but sometimes you just have to let them moan, as far as I can see the hedging was within the boundary of the clients property and had nothing to do with the neighbour, so she had nothing she could possibly do about it. I hate the modern expression "Karen's" but one of the young lads I employ uses it all the time it makes me laugh. You did a good job IMO and I was impressed by the wood chipper we don't use them often as it again causes annoyance with some surrounding neighbours we haul it away and use an industrial chipper at the yard we bag it up and offer it for sale and the proceeds go to a local charity.

    • @Grasscutplus
      @Grasscutplus  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +12

Hiya mate thanks for the nice words mate! Yeah I mean you can’t really see it in the video as the hedge is coving it but there a 6f fence panel sat on 2 gravel boards behind it haha so as far as her moaning about the privacy it was still 2 foot above that fence so she had nothing to moan about really lol. You get that with some people, the ones that have nothing better to do with themselves but to just complain and go around with a fine tooth comb and just complain about everything lol! Yeah the chipper is a brill bit of kit! Fits in the van with ease and you can still fit all the waste bags in at the same time! I wouldn’t even touch a job like this without the chipper mate! Thanks for the comment and watching the video!

I used to do jobbing building to fill in to my main business of erecting formwork, I had skilled brickies used in facing the formwork panels, so to keep em busy between job we built extensions garages etc. Before accepting the job made sure all building permissions drawing etc. had been excepted by the local council and inspections slips were to hand. Also, I enquired about the neighbors and made sure the client was the point of reference not me.
Had some wonderful ones, mainly live alone older folk, who wondered if we had a bucket of compo left over, she could have to point her garden wall, we rebuilt it for her in exchange for teas and coffees for a week. She had 3 meals on wheels per week, on most Fridays we would send the lad for fish and chips well she got a portion as well but insisted on giving us bread and butter doorsteps.
I would get a lot of pensioners asking us to mend loose paving slabs etc. They were nothing jobs. So, I'd put the WI ladies to work. At the next meeting they had to get enough orders for 1 ton of tarmac we gave then the area. Enough slabs to fix for 1 bag cement. Whatever job needing doing they had to find others to make Saturday morning worth starting the truck for. Now from those small jobs we got some huge ones, we made some great friends we got jars of jam and pickle the cupboard was full. But also, sadly got funerals to go to as well, but memories of doorstep chip butties remain.
One of those will make up for 10 Karens.

Hello Brad. Old Hort teacher here. I’ve seen a few of the other gardeners comment on the ladder. I must agree, the ladder isn’t fit for purpose, especially as you are on the top step. Also, getting a little too handsy with the chipper there, it only takes a millisecond lapse of concentration… An old Kew colleague recently lost two fingers from getting a little too blasé with the chipper! Take care, friend. Remember, your body is your bread-winner. Even small injuries can have repercussions for earning and pain later on life.

Nice straight hedge you left them. Bet they were very pleased. I would imagine the neighbours preferred the privacy the hedge used to offer and over reacted. They will learn to live with it. My biggest problem with landscapers/tree surgeons etc is the blatant disregard for wildlife habitat . I’m sure that some do follow the laws regarding the protection of bird nests during the breeding season but I don’t believe for one second that all landscapers do the duty of checking trees and hedges before they start hacking. I have spoken to many over the years about whether or not they are aware of the laws protecting birds nests and if they’ve thoroughly checked their intended project beforehand. So if constitutes me being known as a nightmare neighbour….I’m happy with that 😊

There was a 8ft hedge in between my front garden and my neighbour to my left, she went away for 3 months at a time, I wanted to cut the hedge, so I chapped her door, no answer, I asked the neighbour to her left, "Do you know if she's away?" and that neighbour said "Yes she's away atm".
I cut the hedge down to 4ft. and just as I was sweeping up she arrived. I tried speaking with her but she was overcome with emotion and stormed right passed me "What the hell have you done?" "You've no right doing that".
I told her husband,"It was blocking the light into my house", he said "nowt to do with me" and threw both hands skyward. The hedge was on the boundary 50:50 on each side. I used to cut my half and leave their side all wirey coz she told me off the first year I was being neighbourly and trimmed it all. Ridiculous,I know, why are some people like that. I share my land with them , I'm native to my Land, She was English who had lived in India a while and returned to live in Scotland.
Anyway, 2 days later she apologised for her over-reaction, and said she preferred it at 4ft. All's well that ends well. ✌️

We always had the debate do you take next doors bit off as well- I don’t see the issue because it’s much neater if it’s all done however I have hade neighbours that disagree. Neighbour disputes can be a nightmare. We all want our privacy but some folk feel entitled to make the lives of others a misery. Noise is something you can’t always do something about, especially with modern homes being built so close to each other. If you can try and get on with your neighbours as you never know when you might need their help. Living in a terrace street I have had to accept that on occasions a neighbour will have a party and have no issues with that, a bit of give and take goes a long way.
In most instances if you politely ask someone to stop something they will be apologetic but there’s always one person who will refuse anything and claim to be 100% in the right. As a general rule I think trying to treat folk as you would like to be treated is not a bad thing, it’s sad many folk don’t know their neighbours and things just get worse, it doesn’t have to be that way. Good video.

Yeah I can see both sides to it. I can see from the customers point of view you know it’s their garden they can do what they like but I can also see it from the neighbours point of view. Hiya mate, thanks for watching! So tbh with you it was more for the customer to get an understanding of the hight left after the cut! As the worst thing you can do is just verbally agree a hight and then for them to come out and be like the hell have you done sort of thing hahah! So anything to do with hight reducing on anything I always show them with a string line to to be clear and so they know how it’s going to look! But yea I did then use this as a guid line to put my first cut in! And then it just gets taken down after I put my guid cut in!

Why anyone still grows leylandii as a hedge is a mystery. problem with it for me is that its usually left to long before its cut, mainly because if your seeing it everyday you dont realise how quick its growing up and outwards until its a lot larger.
It does not regrow either if you trim back beyond the green growth.
Better choice is native (English) Yew which actually grows a lot quicker than people believe and can regenerate even from a hard cutback.

    That's nothing.
My neighbours sawed down my two previous fences. I built the third so they couldn't get at the posts.
Instead of sawing it down, they had their garden raised by 4 feet, so my 6 foot fence is only 2 foot high on their side. Now I can't sit in my only outdoor private space without them coming out and sitting above me, filming me and spitting at me.
The council, wrongly, said its ok for the neighbour to raise their garden level by any amount, and enforcement against them was "not in the public interest".
The situation will end in extreme violence the very next time I get spat at. That will be the council's fault.

@@3647Edd Been to the cops mate. Last time I gave them a copy of videos of the neighbour on my property, throwing rubbish onto my property and pushing my fence over etc, plus a list of crimes and witnesses.
They went to have a word and made things worse.
I can't maintain the outside of my house and now can't even go to my dustbin without a steel cosh up my sleeve, not least because the neighbour's highly aggressive son is ex-SAS.
People should never buy Admiral house insurance. Their "Platinum" level cover has a problem-neighbour clause but they say the problem is not serious enough, despite it costing me thousands in criminal damage and theft, and leaving me unable to sit outside in peace even for a minute or two.
Admiral Insurance solicitors, who I had to send details, videos and photos to, suggested they'd act for me independently. A snip, starting at £43,000 if I want them to take the case.
My pension won't cover that, so next time I'm threatened with death for using my right of way to the back of my house (that they've partly built over with the council's blessing, despite my objections), or something is thrown at me, or I'm spat at, I won't retreat into my house. I'll find out whether the SAS are as tough as they claim to be.

    This resonated with me.
The privet hedge at the bottom of our garden was about 8ft high and it wasn't really safe to prop the ladders against it whilst cutting but I presisted for about 18 months before deciding to reduce the height to about shoulder level. My dad and I were about hal way along when the neighbour from the other side decided to rant and rave about us cutting his hedge at which point I told him that according to the deeds it was my hedge and it was dangerous for me to cut it. He threatened to get his solicitor on to it so I told him to go ahead and gave him my name and address.
When he said that I would be able to see into his garden I pointed up to our back bedrooms and told him that if I wanted to see into his garden or his house I could do so from the comfort of the bedrooms.
Discussing this with out adjoining neighbour he pointed out that the first occupant of our house planted the hedge before the ranter's house was built. No solicitors letter ever turned up.
Years later the adjoining neighbour (who incidently used to cut his hedges with a sickle and did a nice job with it) told me that the ranter had eventually mentioned that I had done the right thing in reducing the height.

I'd suggest it is the responsibility of your client to politely inform neighbours of any major works being done, especially if you need access to their property as seems to be this case. I have had neighbours contractors try and break into my garden before when I had had no prior notification because it was more convenient to them to work from my side of the boundary. I have always helped out and given permission once they made it clear what they wanted to do, but I think it is far better for neighbours (or worst case contractors) to inform and ask first. That way, no surprises and less likely conflict when the work is going on

  • @Mrcurlywhirly

There is likely to be more to this example of neighborly friction than hedge height alone, that is probably just a trigger. There may be good reasons she wants to have screening, though she needs to take ownership of the problem, and should be growing a screening plant on here side of the fence, or moving somewhere with more separation from neighbors.

Glad I moved I had a small hedge at the rear of my property it was between properties when I first moved in the man behind used to trim the top. When he and I had a falling out he stopped cutting it. Which left it untidy I had a gardener come and cut it as I’d also heard he had cancer and thought it would be nice he didn’t have to be troubled with it. First time my gardener cut it his wife came out complaining some of it was falling into there side of the garden. So after that we split the hedge down the centre and I just cut my side. His looked messy which did bug me but saved them having a go at my gardener who had said he was trying his best to not let clippings drop. If I’d have heard them I’d have said well cut ur own urself in future. Very ungreatful and messy there side was then always messy. I was glad when I moved.

The hedge definitely did look somewhat overgrown. It looks much better now. Also, if it's on your property you get to decide what to do with your plants. There are a couple of common sense exceptions to this. If a plant is diseased or bug ridden, and may infest or infect others, you may have to remove it. And if you have a tree or other plant in danger of falling on someone else's property or a public space, or the roots of any of your trees or other plants is damaging any structures on someone else's property or a public space you may have to remove it.

The same neighbour also came round and claimed the fence to right side of my property and bordering his property was shared fence, now I would not buy a property where anything is shared including driveways due to disputes can happen it has to be owned or not owned, so I checked my land registry which showed I am responsible for fence to left of my property and rear of my property but not to right side of my property so I copied my land registry document and put a note through his door explaining that he was responsible for his fence along the boundary between his and my property, and that I was not prepared to contribute towards the cost of him replacing his fence for which he was claiming to be shared.

Not your role but the owners, but I think whether its some ones hedge or not, if its going to impact the the view or privacy, basically if they can see it, its crucial to inform neighbors. Even a quick note in the letter box with a number. Have gardened many a year, and never have an issue if I foreworn people (often had probs before) .I think its often just the shock that your private world is changing without being forwarned, if people have a bit of time to process normally its 100% fine, and sometimes I can just make tiny adjustments that make it perfect for both sides and can be a point of connection between neighbor's.. To me it would be like a neighbor just taking a few foot off the fence with a saw. I know the hedge will grow but in the moment it can be very stressful to peoples private worlds (ie gardens). If the neighbor hadnt been pre warned id go around before I cut and tell them. Again great vid, comment not personal to you for I have zero knowledge of what happened, but just a general note.

It's funny. We lived in a tenement flat for years and you get all the hassle of noise from neighbouring flats, banging about in stairwell, leaving stuff all around the shared garden, etc and you think - can't wait to move into a house. Then you do and discover you can land up with very similar problems all over again 😂 Other human beings eh?

I’m glad to hear I’m not the only one who this happens to….. I do appreciate this happens to all self employed people but it’s such a pain and it personally gets me down a lot, not sure about others? ❤

Ayyy try not to let it get you down bud! At the end of the day we are only doing what we are told to do! We get the brunt end as they see us tradesmen as the face of the job unfortunately! At the end of the day if the customer is happy that’s all that matters hah!’ Thanks for watching!

    Like high hedges 😂
Mine needs doing but it's hard on sloping steps only about 10 feet high though.

Some people are unbelievable.. My neighbour has a conifer "Hedge" right up against his side of the fence. It's been there for years and he's not once had it trimmed in height or width. It grows over my side of the fence and I've had it cut back three times at my expense. It gets more costly each time and the mess it creates is incredible.

Had a Danish neighbor like that. Always fighting over the hedge. I totally understand you.

I think Benny Hill music would be good over the speeded up bits 👍
You should have said to the neighbour I'll leave your side then 😃

Just tell her to take it up with the owner of the hedge. You are fulfilling his requirements. Nice job.

Never mind, I would have preferred it high but I understand that it may make it harder to keep it under control. At least you still have a lovely hedge than a dull looking fence! 👍

Good job mate! That’s a hard day work! Shame they wanted it cut! Was a nice hedge! How come they wanted it taken down? Nice work as always!

Thanks for for the support as always mate! So the grass next to the hedge was really suffering from the lack of light so they wanted it cut down so the grass could get more light!

Mate, I ran a gardening business for 16 years and the only grief I ever got was from pathetic interfering neighbours. My customers were always amazing people and very grateful but their neighbours were more often than not a pain in the ass! Nice job by the way. 🙂👍

The neighbours behind us had the old fence removed. The workers that did it then stole our rockery. The neighbours didn't put up a new fence, they just decided that the area behind the greenhouse was now theirs, so my parents paid to have a new fence fitted, but they still managed to steal about a foot of land. Years later the same woman got a gardener to jump over the fence to cut down my conifer with a chainsaw, but luckily I saw him jump over and stopped it before he began.

I wish I had that tall hedge in my yard. I would have asked you to shape it up and fertilize it
