  • It took me about 2 years to lose all the weight I wanted to and another few years to slowly (and lazily?) build muscle where I need it which has helped me lean out more than I anticipated would be possible without restriction or punishing workouts. It's been a slow yet enjoyable process because I CHOSE to BE KIND TO MYSELF every single day

I'm vegan and have been overweight for years or thinking "I'm fat" since I was nine. And I'd become what I thought. I used food to numb myself for being so fat and obviously it has been a vicious cycle. Just this summer I've decided to love myself and think only positively about my body and self. I've never done this before! I've stopped putting crap into my body and am dedicated to eating a whole foods- plant based diet. I love it. And Lily you've certainly helped me along the way. So I thank you for being YOU!

After years of dealing with an autoimmune disease. Putting my body through medical treatments and starvation since I was 10 years old I finally live my life without medication thanks to the vegan lifestyle. I’ve lost 8 kilos effortlessly, reached my lowest weight. My body is learning to heal itself.
Thank you and all the voices out there that put the message out there. Greetings from Mexico.

Wendy Testaburger wow that's amazing!! I'm also dealing with an autoimmune disease. There's a lot of conflicting info out there on what diet to follow, but I've always felt high carb vegan is the answer! 😊

Maria Victoria I was diagnosed with lupus at ten. And due to the immunosuppressants I got tuberculosis when I was 14. That led to two major surgeries which involved taking out my digestive organs (stomach and intestines) to search for specific ganglions, and put them back in within 7 hours. After that, my body could hardly process any fatty foods. So I began taking certain foods out of my diet. Slowly I began to notice what made my body sick and what foods didn’t cause pain. I stopped taking meds at 18 when I read the instructions on the back of the box and it said that taking that medication for a long period causes cancer. I’m not dealing with cancer too. I refuse to be sick my entire life and take pills that fix one thing but destroy another. I used to call the hospital my second home but not anymore. Diet has helped me regulate my body to the point where my blood studies don’t indicate any signs of lupus. I’m cautious. Don’t drink, don’t smoke, never had never will. Lots of exercise, self love, and respect for others. I believe that animal products made me sick in the first place, all those hormones, chemicals, dead cells. My case has been studied in congresses 3 times, however it doesn’t get any attention because it wouldn’t make anyone money to just tell your patient to try a diet change. Sad but true.

Thank you for sharing. I also have Lupus and am free of medication since switching to a whole foods vegan diet 1 1/2 years ago. I am careful to not let myself get run down, get enough sleep, eat right, exercise etc but I definitely feel like I have my life back. It's amazing how food can heal the body

Ironically, I put on a lot of weight when I went vegan. I'm not so bothered about losing weight, but my goal is to strengthen my body. I'm only 39 but feel 80. My body is sore, tight and with very little muscle it doesn't function the way I'd like. Thank you Lily for giving me the motivation to get a healthy body, in a healthy way. Kx

I'm sure you may have heard this before (and I apologize if you have), but have you considered yoga or light stretching? When I first started my fitness/health journey, I wasn't ready to tackle weight lifting at the gym. I have lupus and my body felt like it was already 80 as well. I looked up beginning yoga videos on youtube and started by doing those and altering my diet a little (wasn't vegan yet, but started to make healthier choices). Once I started feeling stronger, I moved on to incorporating weight lifting as well and started looking into different diets/lifestyles (vegan, keto, paleo, etc.) before deciding vegan felt best for me. But yoga was a very gentle way to get started and you don't need any memberships or equipment, and it helps a ton with tight muscles and things like lower back pain.
Sorry for the novel of writing but I hope this helps a bit!

      How clean is your diet?
I suggest 10 servings of fruits and vegetables a day, 8+ cups of water, 7-9 hours of sleep, and little to no added oils, sugars, and salts.

I am in the exact same place as you Lily. I have really stopped caring what the scale says as well because I have developed so much muscle that while I weigh nearly 150lbs, I look 20lbs lighter. I also stopped caring about how people thought of my massive increase of fruit and veggie consumption. By caring for my body, my body has clearly reflected that care.

I constantly hear health gurus/leaders/coaches/bloggers say what you said about how being skinny doesn't magically solve people's problems but ... My life was RADICALLY better when I weighed 20 lbs less after a strict dieting regime. People treated me better, I felt better and I acted differently. Opportunities just ... appeared for me. It actually WAS kind of magical. I'm looking forward to being skinny again.

    • @lilykoihawaii

I hear you. I remember after I reached my "weight loss goal" when I was 18 (after starving myself and running all the time), I felt different. I was more confident, guys were interested in me, I felt comfortable in my own skin... Then I gained it all back and I felt miserable again. I thought I'd have to be that skinny before I could feel happy or confident or have fun. But at my biggest, I decided to live my life anyway... to live as though I were at my "goal weight". And you know what? Life changed. I was more confident, guys were interested in me, I felt comfortable in my own skin... even though I was "fat". I met my husband at my largest, and he didn't care. I pursued some major goals and scholarships at my largest. I laughed and smiled and flirted and had ridiculously fun adventures at my largest. Nobody cared. The size of my body wasn't what was magical, it was my attitude.

really great message there, that it was your acceptance of yourself that came BEFORE the weight loss and allowed it to happen in a healthy steady way. we often think that we'll accept ourselves AFTER losing weight, but that leads to unhealthy obsession with diet and exercise that shoot us in the foot over and over

I'm happy that I am in pretty much the exact same state with my body since I started working out regularly about a year ago (which is also when I came across your channel). It amazes me that I can now go a week or two without doing much exercises and still look the same. I do prefer sticking to the workout routines because I don't live in a warm climate and feel like I need to do as much as I can to strengthen my immune system. The first few years of being vegan were filled with lots of long-lasting colds, but they have completely disappeared (only got a cold for a couple days last week for the first time in over a year) now that I take more care of myself.

This. 👌 I have pretty much the same past Lily. I’m down 10 to 15 lbs from 220 lbs at 5’5” And having trouble despite having the most amazing loving supportive young sexy partner I could ever dream of (he doesn’t care about my weight), in overcoming the lack of self worth you discussed in this video. This video made me feel like you were giving me a hug and reading my mind, and I cried buckets due to a lot of built-up pain on the subject (and I needed make my breakfast smoothie lol). I have not restricted, and have had ~4,000 cal a day such as my appetite, for 3 years, recovering from metabolic damage and adrenal fatigue. I felt wonderful the entire time except when I fretted over imperfect appearance. Moving forward I know I need to achieve earlier bedtimes and get back into exercise. I think a lot of the missing info I didn’t get from FL & DR over the last few years of this journey I can find in your videos which are MUCH more informative. I didn’t even start gaining healing weight until a year after watching freelee because she was such a purist fruitarian at the time and I still overexercised and couldn’t get enough cals. I didn’t even know I would gain, didn’t realize how much restriction and overexercise I’d done. Hindsight 20/20. I wish there were not lies and scams about weight loss confusing young people. Thank you so much for making these videos. I tell all to watch. They are perfect. Also your physique is perfect, you look so gorgeous and strong! Well, I’d better get watching!

woman, you are such a bright light in the youtube world. i have been working over the last several years toward holistic health, easing out of unhealthy eating patterns into conscious eating, conscious moving, breathing, etc...and the physical changes that i am noticing about myself are nothing compared to the way that my perspective is changing but i know that they are intrinsically connected! thank you for addressing the importance of healthy self-attitude in such a clear and direct way!

The self love is a slow process for me, one day at a time!

Lovely video, Lily. 😘 I used to be so scared of putting on weight in my early adult life, as I was a bit of a chubby kid. I am currently 10 kg overweight and I have to tell you that you are a great example to follow, which allows me to feel calm knowing I'm on the right track. Keep pumping out your high quality videos. Great video as always Lily. And thank you for including us guys as part of your audience, I know we're in the minority, but it's nice to hear you say you're talking to us too.
It's funny you released this video today, because I actually just came onto youtube because I was thinking I need to go back and really check out your weight loss videos because I've been somewhat in a rut, not really focused on loosing weight and dabbling in a mix of healthy foods and the more oily foods (all vegan of course) this last year and I think the other big issue is that I really have not been kind to myself in the sleep department, turned into a bit of a night owl and internet junkie. It's weird writing it down, but I think about all day how I need to just go to bed at a regular time, then once my wife and young kids are in bed it's stay up till I'm passing out surfing the internet, and often eating late too. Don't drink, don't smoke, don't consume caffeine except on rare occasions and I really, really love riding my bike....I just don't do it enough... and come winter when the weather turns especially horrible in my little corner of Canada (actually the mildest area of the country on the west coast near vancouver, our winters are usually just wet and cold, last year was abnormal that we had a fair bit of snow....still nothing compared to the other 99% of the country) I think I'll get back to swimming at the pool. And to do that, I'll need to get to bed earlier.... I don't expect you to reply to this long message, it's actually pretty therapeutic just writing this out publicly, but not like facebook with friends and family reading this.
Anyways Lily, your videos are awesome, You and your family are awesome, and love seeing your amazing fruit trees....especially your banana plants....yes, I'm the crazy canadian that has been growing a few plants out here and I'm gonna have to somehow bring them into my basement pretty soon for the winter so that they survive.

Yes agreed! My problem is that bulimia enabled me to rapidly lose the 40lbs I had binged on after "recovering" from anorexia and has kept me at a weight that I'm quite happy with (but is not "too thin") for the past 2 years. I am so exhausted from and ashamed of it but I don't trust myself to remain stable weight-wise If I stop the bulimia.

It's so true that you have to love yourself whatever you look like, because that love will make you want to treat your body with love i.e, feed and take care of yourself properly ❤️however, losing weight does change your life... you feel so much better, even only being a few pounds lighter... for example, I do yoga and I gained 20 pounds over a year (depression + 1 month travel =me stuffing my face🙄nb I wasn't vegan yet) and I just couldn't do the yoga poses I used to be able to do. I could feel my fat getting in tje way of my flexibility and twists especially. It was devastating to see all the progress I had made just disappear 😞but now 9 months vegan (almost completely wf) and I almost lost all of the weight back! And that is after a pregnancy too! (baby is 3 months old)💪I am starting to feel great in my body again ❤️☺️

I find this to be true. The worse I feel about my body the more weight I seem to gain and the better I feel the less I weigh. I have a plateau that my body is "comfortable" at. Although I am not 100% of the time I also love all of my curves. I do need to do a bit more self love practices just to keep positive but over all I agree

Yes muscle is the key! Women need to stop being afraid to lift weights! Thanks for spreading that message. Women erroneously think that if they lift weights they will weigh more and get bigger. This is so not the case. Lift heavy, eat like she does and you will loose the weight. Check out my IG valley_blonde_is_bac. I’m still on my journey but making progress

Hey Lily, I've asked for your advice many times and I really appreciate your opinion more than anyone's about health and fitness. Anyway, I've been on effexor for 16 years and I'm slowly coming off it with a psychiatrists guidance.
However, one of my main problems is that I suffer from really bad headaches. I've been recommended magnesium glycinate , CBD oil and omega 3. Would you recommend these too? Obviously id find vegan ones.
I'm currently pounding down water, sleeping well and eating whole food plant based ( with a tiny bit of vegan junk).
You look absolutely amazing and I really admire you. Your channel is my go to channel on all things health related and weight related.
    😘😘😘
