I love that everyone's armor kits make them into big quadruple armed monsters or stoic brick house superheroes, but Astrotrain is so simple in his desires he just kind of settles for "A crapton of guns and then some counterbalance to keep the recoil from knocking him on his back"
Honestly, the only reason I can think of that HasTak didn't go that route is because it'd be a bitch and a half to engineer, but...I mean, look at the rest of the engineering on this guy! They otherwise did a pretty bang-up job of making things fit into where you wouldn't expect them to fit and making parts that definitely didn't look like they belonged on a steam locomotive or space shuttle look at home on a steam locomotive and space shuttle, all while having a clean, screen-accurate robot mode. If anyone could pull that kind of engineering magic off, it's HasTak's design department. Ah, well--their missed opportunity opens up an opportunity for third-party creators. I'm not a betting man, but I'd put good money on an unofficial upgrade kit comin' out somewhere down the line (d'oh hoh!) that'll fix the shuttle mode and, in all likelihood, beef up the super mode somethin' fierce.
Honestly, the amount of engineering that goes into these things is insane. When I first saw it, I could tell that it was probably because of how the train mode was formed and trying to not have massive holes in the body.
I was kinda scratchin' my head when I first saw the super robot mode, too...but, then I remembered something: he's the Decepticons' logistics specialist. Of _course_ his super mode's just a pair of skates and a backpack--his whole job's just ferrying troops and gear! Those probably aren't even his guns! They're probably goin' to Brawl or Apeface or somesuch, but here he is, surrounded by Autobums who'd very much like to rob and/or kill him, so he might as well go all Galaxy Express on their aft-ends! I mean, sure, Megatron's probably gonna beat him senseless for delivering weapons that've had most of their ammunition reserves spent before they even reached the front lines... Astrotrain needs a vacation.
I just picked one up that was on sale. I've got G1 Kickback hitching a ride so I'd the Battle Masters and/or Micromasters could likewise do the same. I think I'm going to try to take the pronged hinge that connects to the feet enhancements off and sand it down some to see if I can get the shuttle transport modes to actually lay flat. The bowing... upsets me a bit. (Which is silly, considering plastic tolerances and the otherwise nifty amount of engineering going on with this dude.)
I think this guy’s pricing is more justified than Shockwave. He’s never had that armor before, whereas at least steam locomotives actually do have tenders.
He’s also probably a leader because of engineering. In order to not need to shaft a third mode a leader budget could help them engineer more to make all modes better
Gyrre as he doesn’t split into multiple pieces like galaxy upgrade prime, his overall difficulty is in line with traditional triple changers even at the seige range as the figure seems to retain the general dynamic of the G1 toy
Gyrre I see and I get it I was thinking of going. After him as I never owned a triple changer is all at the seige line is he as relatively consistent as Triple changers have been over the years or is he a little harder?
Astrotrain has always been one of my favorites, and I'm glad to see he's getting a good G1-like new version. The shuttle mode does look a bit anemic in the rear half, and the front end of the locomotive doesn't work for me (the wheels aren't lined up with the rest of the wheels, so they wouldn't be on the rails), but the robot mode looks great. The addition of the tender (you called it a "caboose", but it's where the fuel and water for the engine are carried) is also neat with the way it transforms in to a launch pad - though I agree it doesn't work well as a backpack for robot mode. All-in-all, however, it looks great!
I bought this figure from amazon, and I can already tell I’m gonna enjoy it. -shuttle mode is a bit wonky but it’s alright -the coal car added to train mode is a good addition to the model -the robot mode is great, it’s tall and sturdy, and exactly how i remember Astro train from transformers G1 - all the weapons Astro train is given makes him look powerful and cool, and the fire too Highly recommend buying this toy 👌
It's because the connection ramps on the launch pad is what got this guy rereleased in Earthrise. He looks virtually the same except for the packaging.
So much Blooshing, he changed his name to John Blooshi!!! Awesome figure! I wasn't able to find the Titans Return Astrotrain in stores, so I hope I have an easier time finding him!
Great review! I find that I now automatically insert Emgo-isms into every other TF review I watch. The reviewer shows what he's reviewing and I say "and here we are and there he is and first and foremost let's have a look at the packaging!" Or when they talk about how well the figure rolls I say "it rolls as rolling things should... Hurray for rrrrolling!" And to think I used to NOT be an emgo fan at one time, lol
Great looking Astrotrain, I definitely am getting him, hopefully a 3rd party will make some upgrade parts for him, especially gap fillers for his arms and legs
Yep. Earthrise will get a "Leader Class" Astrotrain figure as well.. guess what? Same figure, in the same colours and same accessories/weapons.. just a different looking box is the only change.
They had this on the shelves at my local Target, and when I went to checkout, they said it wouldn't be for sale until mid September. Why they had it on the shelves if they couldn't sell it until September is beyond me! The same went for a lot of the newer figures in this line, including a really cool Thundercracker / Skywarp 2-pack.
I find it hilarious that Hasbro showed both Robot Modes for Shockwave and Ultra Magnus because they were both really awesome, but they realized Astrotrain’s “Second Robot Mode” was so bad and shameful they didn’t even bother to display on the back of the box.
They kinda dropped the ball with the tender's versatility. It's perfect for train mode obviously but it should've come apart into the rest of the rear of the shuttle mode. For robot mode, those parts would then become shields and extra wings or something. It's not like they didn't already know that shields was going to be the theme in the next line and since Astrotrain is bridging the gap by being in both, he could've also bridged both thematically as well. A ton of guns and a ton of shields.
@@lindaboreham3633 at least with Shockwave you can get a sort of super mode with is. All Astrotrain gets is a backpack and flip flops. Ultra Magnus is really the only one who pulls it off though.
Hey Emgo, watch your videos often. Just picked up Astrotrain, been messing with it and I think I found a hack for the tender box transport mode where you can get astrotrain to peg in, if you flip astrotrains feet out they will peg into the front of the transport mode, check it out and see what you think. Hope you like the suggestion.
You did a very good job reviewing this (and other reviews as well), I had an idea though for the caboose "armor up" robot mode. get the caboose to the point of attaching it to the back, but before you do, fold the bottom flap with the "wings" fully up behind the robot when attached (so it looks like what is done for the top connection part, if possible), then you can move the "wings" to different angles. And that would be about it, and as I said, just an idea I had, don't know if it would work or not; if it does, however, please reply so I know if it did, that would be awesome, thanks! And I know your busy with making these videos, and they are great, but when you have a chance, this would be cool to find out!
picked this guy up yesterday at a walmart for 39 Canadian dollars! don't know if he is on sale anywhere else, but i think that 39 is a much better price for this "leader" class figure, the voyager price is much better since he is not leader size
I absolutely love this figure! I actually really like the shuttle mode despite the unarmored back section, frankly I like it better than the train mode which is still really cool. I really like all the weapons and the coal car that becomes a shuttle carrier/launch pad is a fantastic idea and works pretty well imo. Best official Astrotrain hands-down!
I enjoyed your reviews. Its always an honest review. And also, those little dialogs at every end of the reviews. Its fun to watch. Keep it up Emgo. I loved it. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
All it needs is a replacement caboose that can enclose the back of the shuttle mode to look it cleaner and link onto the back of robot mode to be wings instead of a box..
When I was a kid I had my uncle's G1 astrotrain toy but I didn't know his name so I actually called him space train. So what mascot said at the beginning brought back those memories. Great review as all ways emgo, you rock!
I'm worried that Hasbro is doing this voyager with extra stuff as a leader thing to eventually just sell voyagers at leader class prices. They'll gradually come with fewer and fewer extras until they eventually phase out the voyager class and start selling basic voyagers as leaders.
Ordered this figure along with Siege Crosshairs this morning, UK time, should arrive on Friday. It's silly that a folding panel couldn't have been designed that could have acted as a shield in robot mode, a roof addition in train mode and been designed to fold out and slot in place at the back part of the shuttle mode so to make the mode look more cohesive.
As I said elsewhere I plan to use the caboose part as a Micromaster base; it even has the A.I.R. locks on the ramps to connect to Omega Supreme. (I just discovered the rounded tracks actually have Titans Return connector ports as well.)
I figured out how to not make the shuttle mode look weird. Take the detachable pieces from the caboose and peg them in the holes towards the rear. The two blasters are going to be needed to help secure them in place, but it works and looks better.
I agree I got my ER Astrotrain, love his bot and train mode, shuttle, yuck!! However I look up on TFSAFARI matrix workshop they sell a back piece cover for about $15 that becomes a secondary weapon for him. I purchased one, maybe Shapeways will have an upgrade piece in the future.
So glad I waited to get this one. G1 Astrotrain was my first Transformer so always felt a bit nostalgic with him. I picked up the Classica which was a fine updated representation but the colors ehhh I figured they just made more sense and let it pass. 3rd parties came out and none seemed to hold a torch to him. Then Hasbro and Takara tried with Titans Return/Legends which was an ok figure, but now this Siege/Earthrise and for the first time I feel like I've got my G1 Astrotrain again
Love him and agree with you on the shuttle mode but I turned his coal tender into a shield on his arm. It restricted any movement but for shelf life it looks much better then on his back

Springer has it easy. It's easy to do all three modes when it's robot, "future" car and "future" helicopter. Astro train has to look like vehicles that actually exist.
This chonky boi just came in at Target on the east coast. It released as part of the Earthrise line. I'm not sure if that makes any difference. The train alt mode is definitely the best, though he would need 4 rails on a track since the front wheels aren't aligned with the rest (the front wheels line up perfectly with the wooden Thomas track pieces... yes, my 4yo daughter figured that one out for me. The box seems like a coal tender, and makes sense because our favorite purple train looks like a steam engine, necessitating a tender directly behind the engineer compartment. The back end of the shuttle alt mode reminds me of the shuttle from Armageddon with the wings angled back/down. I agree that the backpack looks dumb, but maybe we'll get an Earthrise legends-sized deluxe class Decepticon like cliffjumper to ride piggyback... to hold even more guns? His face reminds me of Clint Eastwood. "Get off my lawn." Also, not sure if it's just the lighting, but the Earthrise version seems quite a bit darker than the Siege release versions I've only seen in review videos.

Someone give him enough Energon rations so he won't go hungry out there!
I picked a Seige Astrotrain at Ross for $18 this week and this is the first review I came back to before I decide to open him. Great video, great toy, great reviewer!
Do wish they could of filled the back end of shuttle mode a little more, but overall this is the Astrotrain we've been wanting. Proper shuttle and locomotive modes!
The earth rise astrotrain looks exactly like the siege astrotrain but he has visable head syndrome in rocket mode which makes the back half of it look even worse
Factoring in the comparison triple changers. That was a lot of transforming. You work hard at this. Thank you.
appreciate it :)
I love that everyone's armor kits make them into big quadruple armed monsters or stoic brick house superheroes, but Astrotrain is so simple in his desires he just kind of settles for "A crapton of guns and then some counterbalance to keep the recoil from knocking him on his back"
caboose parts should have formed rest of shuttle rear to fill in the space. Big missed opportunity to fix the space shuttle mode

Oh good grief, he's going Snow Shoeing with his hiking backpack. Quick! Someone give him enough Energon rations so he won't go hungry out there!
'Leader Class' is smaller than I thought...
(I still remember my 2009 movie 2 leader class optimus}
Been meaning to pick up an Astrotrain and I think I’m glad I waited, he’s very cool
"The energon, is leaking. Cybertron's insane.....I'm goin' off the rails on an Astrotrain"
The shuttle mode looks like it has all the back covering on the front.
i gotta say i love the new improved emo face at the begining
The earth rise astrotrain looks exactly like the siege astrotrain but he has visable head syndrome in rocket mode which makes the back half of it look even worse
Eyyy AAHHH Some saddlelight too? AHHHH
If I hear one more awful pun at the beginning of the next video that I watch I'm going to lose my mind
Say goodbye to your mind LOL
Who is your favorite triple changer?
Mine is Blitzwing
I like Blitzwing too
Springer for Triple Changers, Sixshot as a Multiformer.
Hopefully someone will make a shell for the back half of the jet mode.
