- Have you ever seen a stitch pattern and wanted to make something, but never knew how to determine your multiple for the pattern. Let me walk you through the basics of how to figure it out. This works for crochet and knit patterns alike. So say you found a scarf pattern, but wanted to make the same stitch but for a larger project like an afghan, you need to know how to figure out the multiple of the stitch pattern to know how many chains you need to start your larger project. I walk you step by step through two examples to show you how.
Glenda your video tutorials are amazing. I've crocheted for years but have learned so much from you. Thank you for taking the time and putting in the effort to teach so many aspects of the crochet world. It is so very much appreciated!
Thank you Grandma! To be honest I like the tutorials the best but this really helped me understand those little lines and circles I see in some written patterns posted with some work! Love you grandma!
Thanks Grandma, for taking time to explain how to make changes to a pattern I want to make it fit me. I really think that I can change a pattern to fit my size. You are a very good teacher Thanks again.
Thank you Creative Grandma for this video! As always you make it as simple as you can be so I can understand. Blessings ❤
Thank you! I've searched You Tube over for a simple, not-over-my-head way to formulate a pattern! Thank you!!!! I crochet tighter than most in my small group at church and sometimes my items are a lot smaller than the other girls' items. Thanks to this crazy pandemic it's not as easy for us to get together and crochet as a group but I still want to crochet and that sometimes gets crazy without and instructor. Currently I'm trying to adjust a pattern for a baby blanket to suit my style and I had pretty much given up until tonight. I found your video and it is amazing! You are awesome!
Thank you for this, I kind of figured some patterns out but, now you laid it out for me plainly.
Thank you so much for explaining this! I’ve crocheted for years but the stitch multiples always eluded my brain, until now!
I have to watch the video again.
Thanks very helpful.
This is the best explanation and tutorial about how to determine a stitch multiple. I understood pattern repeats but, not how to obtain the numbers. It was always a bit mysterious for example where to start counting the repeat based from the diagram. Although I knew it would work if I just blindly followed the directions that’s just not my style of crochet. I want to know the how and whys! You are awesome for breaking it down for us. Thank You!!!
I was confused what you were trying to explain in the video. I realize it will take time and practice for me to learn how to read or understand written patterns as I have never used them, I've always watched tutorials or was physically taught by watching someone else. I really hope you keep doing these types of videos as it will eventually sink in or click in my brain. Thank you 😊
Just came across this video. So easy and clear! Thank you.
Hello Glenda! Thank you so much for this video! You're the best!
Thank you for this video... I have always have problems figuring out the multiple!! With your video.. I am enlightened and finally understand the concept! Thank you!
Super helpful!!! Thank you so much. You have a wealth of information. Thanks for sharing it with us.
Thank you for clearing my confusion on reading patterns. Awesome idea for writing out the the multiples... I'm going to do this for all patterns now.
Hi how are you I am so happy that I download the guide I was smiling all throughout the whole thing thank you very much have a great day
thank you for this tutorial..I've learned to crochet at age 50+ by watching you tube videos..I find written pattern confusing..so this was very helpful..love watching your tutorials..!!
- Thank You for this video, it's very interesting to know the basics. I have been crocheting since I was five, mostly without patterns. Then I'm from Sweden, so now I learn the us-terminology and then also the uk-terminology. About seven months ago I started to crochet again after a "pause" of more than twentyfive years... 😂 (I'm to be sixty in october.) I love that there is so much tutorials of crocheting at TH-cam, it makes me try new things all the time! 😊😊😊
Thanks for this video, you are a wonderful teacher
This basic idea is really very helpful and thanku for explaining about the patterns
Excellent video topic Glenda. I'd wondered this myself.
THANK YOU FOR THIS PATTERN MULTIPLE IT HAS BEEN VERY HELPFUL
Thank you for making this video makes multiples alot easier 😊😊
Your videos are one off the finest I have seen in utube land. I wish you would do a part 2. Any possibility?
Thank you so much for this. I really wondered how to do this.
TFS!!! That helps a lot about the basics. You made that really easy. Thanks Jill
Your videos are awesome!! Yours are the only ones I've found that share this type of basic knowledge that will really help self-taught but pretty proficient crocheters fill in the missing gaps. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Also, would you be able to do a video or two on how to adjust pattern sizes up or down? I can follow a pattern just fine - but it has to be exactly the right size. Sometimes I see a sweater pattern I would like to make for someone but I don't know how to adjust the measurements up or down so I won't end up with gorilla arms or T-rex arms. Thanks again!
Karla Thomas I have been searching... unsuccessfully... to find this important info too. Maybe it’s a well guarded secret amongst the designers, who are sworn to secrecy? 🤔😆
well-done, as usual, glenda!! ❤️
this type of information is quite helpful to novice & 'experienced' crocheters, alike!!
looking forward to your next stitch of the week pattern!! ;)
Thank You Denise for letting me know I was right the first time in the video, the last multiple is a multiple of 3 plus 5. when I doubled checked the video, I forgot to count the last stitch. so the video is right. Your good at determining your multiple, thank you for letting me know I was right. LOL
😉🤗

Awesome video. Have been wondering how to do this. Thank You! 👍
Ok. I think I got it lol. You made it easier to understand with your diagram. I'm keeping this for future reference just in case. Thank you so much for your time explaining it. 💋❤️

Thanks so much for being a fantastic teacher that makes it easy for beginners to advanced to learn from your years of experience😁👍😘

;):):):):):)
Thank you so very much for this tutorial. I've been researching on how to do figure out the stitch pattern. I am more a visual person and sometimes, it's difficult to read some of the patterns out there.
Is there a book that may cover more of this topic? I have a couple of knit and crochet stitch reference books and working to create my own style. I applaud all the crocheters and knitters who create beautiful designs.
This gives me more inspiration to achieving a small dream I have.
KLD - here's a link to a site that may provide additional info for you. there are a few, out there...
you may want to check out how to read a pattern first, if you don't already know how - then, you'll have some of the symbols figured out for drawing your own. just a suggestion. ;)

topaz pitt , thank you so very much for the link. I do read patterns to a certain point. I would rather watch a quick tutorial on a pattern stitch and run with it. I will definitely check out the link and do some more research. Thanks again. Respectfully, Donna
Oh thanks much for this!
I stumbled across this video, what a gem!. . Iam venturing out into designing my own crochet pattern and I would love to see more videos on the subject. Example what determines what multiple you will need to design a scarf? Another question I have is if you want to make a crochet pineapple doily how do I figure out where to start? Thanks so much.
Thank you 😊
Thank you
Thank you! This helps a lot! :)
love your vids
This is very helpful thank u
I enjoy your tutorials even though I have to rename the stitches as I live in Australia. Sometimes its confusing but very much worthwhile .I am more interested in the tunisioc crochet and would like to know if there are patters for baby clothes in this
Interesting, thanks
Thanks!
Thank you you helped
Hi Glenda,
Thank you for sharing I’m sure this will be very useful for many of us...but can you explain in the first pattern the dc is counted as 4 including the chain stitch it’s made in and in the 2nd pattern the dc is only counted as 2? And how is it counted if you do a standing dc to start a pattern (or any standing stitch)?
Thank you and take care🙏🏼💗🧶🦋😻
Awesome😀!
Luv yah💕
It does help!
Ms. Glenda can you please make a video that tells us how to figure out how many stitches are supposed to be in a row after the pattern stops and tells you to repeat lines. Like most patterns tell you how to start, then gives you rows you have to repeat for length. The patterns I see online do not tell you how many stitches should be in each row after and I think that's my problem with this pattern I'm working on now.
Hi Glenda……What if you are crocheting in the round? A skirt for example?
love it
Hi Glenda, I have a pattern that I’m trying to figure out the multiples if any. It is called simply shawl. I got the pattern for free. The crochet crowd did a tutorial on this shawl. It called for 70 stitches but he has you do a chain of 68. I wanted to make this shawl a little wider for my sister and I am confused. I asked Mikey about the multiples for this pattern but he has not gotten back to me. I see other people has asked the same question with no reply. You are such an awesome teacher, I hope you can help. Thank you for your help.
Thank you for the video l begin crocheting when l was 12 then I stopped for I think 15yrs I now I begin to crochet I am 58 and I learn a lot on TH-cam l saw your video on how to count the multiples it's a bit difficult for me I would like if it is possible to explain it in a tutorial please because I don't understand the start and the end thank you
Good Evening,
I have a pattern that end before the repeat how do I take that into account? I think I did the multiple right but I am unsure, any help would be great thank you so much for your time.
So my pattern begins with a ch 5, sc into 7th stitch from hook. The first three of those ch is a dc. How do I count that? The foundation row is dc.
If an afghan pattern just tells me to chain 137 and doesn’t tell me what the multiple is and I want to make it wider how do I tell what the multiple is so that I can make it wider?
I have a pattern that calls for a multiple of 31 + 31. Is that an error in the pattern?
Very confusing!!!
