    I think expensive equipment matters less than people think. Greg Nuckols deadlifts in fucking slippers and squatted 700lb in $9 Walmart shoes.

    two pieces of equipment that really have made lifting heavy sustainable for me were knee sleeves and wrist wraps. It wasn't so much about adding to the lift as it was just supporting joint longevity. I wouldn't feel pain in the wrists or knees coming into the next workout

    SBD knee sleeves. Perfect for squats and most heavy leg movement and acts as shin guards during deadlifts. I love em and they're mostly for protection than performance even tho they can help a little.

    • @wajikhantv
      @wajikhantv 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ***** it's hard to say, it'll definitely vary from person to person based on experience level of course but it does provide that little extra spring and tightens up the form a bit.
      It's been extra cold where I live lately so it's warmed up my joints and no I don't grind out reps like I used to so yeah maybe an 20lbs flys up much quicker and less grinding it out. I do feel the next day my legs are much more overloaded. But if you have any sort of knee discomfort due to weight, age, climate or years of lifting - BUY THESE

    • @alozor13
      @alozor13 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      SBDs help you at the bottom of the lift which is the hardest part of the lift... IMO it should be removed from raw competition... Keeping the knees warm you gonna say? Well, You can buy CVS 5$ knee sleeves for that or wear compression tights with sweat pants on top... And keeping your knees warm doesn't prevent injury... Knee sleeves, if worn too tight(they shrink after a few wash, and you need to wash them a lot to get rid of the stink) can mess up proper patella tracking and increase risk of injury. Which is what happened to me. I ditched them and chronic knee pain is completely gone... If you don't compete in PL meet, strong man, crossfit and to a certain extend weightlifting, Expensive knee sleeves are a waste of money...

    • @alozor13
      @alozor13 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** thanks for explaining to me the concept of competition... the fact is they can add a good 10 to 20 pounds to your squat and IMO, should not be allowed in raw (no wraps) meets... hell, i think they should remove belts too... if you want you knees warm $5-$10 is enough... not $90.. but hey, that's your money... if it makes you feel good...

    • @alozor13
      @alozor13 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** i said 10 to 20 pounds... if you buy a pair of SBD one size under, you can get an extra 20 lbs... to each its own, i'd rather not rely on sleeves to help me bounce out of the hole... do you brother...

    I ordered some adipowers but i workout for hypertrophy. One day i squatted with a wedge under my heels and it felt amazing, especially for front squats! While equipment helps with lifting I also feel that its comfort-ability while preforming certain exercises is very important.

    Im 19 and I've been powerlifting for about a year now and just recently started renting out a belt from my gym at Unlv when I train. I used to think using a belt was a cheat to lift and I wanted to lift based off of my own strength and chucks. But now that I'm lifting heavier and im going into my first USAPL competition next week in Vegas I think it's time to invest in my own equipment. Love you guys so much and you're honestly the reason I started powerlifting and taking it seriously

  • @timothyhuynh2014

    18 yrs old, 235 lbs raw no equipment whatsoever no wraps no sleeves no belt, just chucks and chalk 325 bench, 495 squat, 525 dl I'm just a cheap ass mofo with decent genetics that has no interest with competing in power-lifting. Wrestled in high school for 4 years and it's almost my first full year of serious lifting in a few months. You can get decent numbers without gear fellas. Work on mobility and form, strength will come it just takes time. I completely agree with them about gear when you're thinking about getting into competition. Protect yourself before you wreck yourself!!! It's all personal preference. I personally don't use equipment because so far I have not had an incident where I thought I was going to be injured during a lift. Just a tip, if the weight doesn't feel right push your ego aside, it's not being a bitch, you're thinking about this as a lifestyle.

      Alex Altringer lol im not bragging, it's barely my first year lifting, just saying you can make decent progress without any gear. You don't need gear unless you're lifting heavy ass weight. If i was benching 500, squatting and deadlifting 800 id wear equipment. I'm not discrediting equipment whatsoever. If I was bragging id be lying about my numbers and weight. I know that the numbers im hitting at my weight is mediocre at best lmao. just calm your ballsack.

  • @h2osplash

    Bought Adipowers about 6 months in for two reasons: 1) my ankle mobility's horrible (still working on it) and 2) They're solid shoes and I figured if I was going to buy a pair of oly shoes, I would go for something that would last me in the long run. Looking at it now, I probably could've just toughed it out and just keep working on mobility in the ankles until I got it, but the shoes have actually helped because I can get to a deeper squat.I also make sure to squat in flat shoes every now and then so I don't get too adjusted to it.
    Summary: Personally, I felt that the shoes helped me speed up my progress that I probably would've otherwise made eventually. (if that made any sense haha)
    -Some random branded Wrist wraps came shortly after and it's definitely helped with my benching. (Relatively inexpensive so I didn't see any reason not to try them out)
    I honestly don't see any problems with getting gear simply because it's gear to help with what you're trying to do. It's like if someone wanted to get better at basketball, he/she wouldn't wear flip flops to practice in. :)

    My story may be a bit 'unique.' my bodybuilder roommate got me into lifting and VERY early I was into the strength training/power lifting aspect of the gym (I'm talking a couple of weeks after first hitting the gym).
    Maybe 3 months in, I got chucks. And My chucks were like my brother. I feel early on, those are all you need, and there is a reason why weather your DL'n 135 or 495, a lot of people stick by their old beaten up chucks, and I hope to be that soon.
    Now I JUST got Adipowers (less than a weak ago) for two main reasons. 1, my squat was progressing nicley but I sorta wanted to 'boost' it, and besides EVERYONE you see squatting heavy is in them, but whatever I guess thats a pretty beta line of thinking. 2 (and most importantly, I back squat every Monday and Friday, and front squat, Monday Wednesday and Friday, meaning I do 5 'squat' movements a week. I justified that as a reasonable amount to get shoes. I'm not wearing them for an hour once a week, They are one me being used for around 5-6 hours a week. I feel like, especially for someone who pretty new to lifting myself included (only for about 8 months now) You need reasons to get this type of shit, Be committed, know that this aint some flavor of the month hobby, and you are prepared to use the fucking shit you be.
    Regarding the belt, wraps/straps (knee and wrist). It should be depending on need. If you feel like your forearm in pain while OHP and Bench, or like squat, consider getting wraps. However, if your core is hurting you DL'n a plate, maybe devote some time to strengthen that shit. I've made it a rule from very early on that I won't let myself even TOUCH a belt unless im doing a min. 405 DL or a 315 sqt. These numbers I made up for myself honestly for vanities sake and don;t apply to everyone. But that's my take on eqpmnt.

      +Ravi Sangha Well that's a good Mindset anybody using Belts before progressing to 315sqt & 405DL is just stealing body's own gains( Stabilizers,joints,tendons). However being front,back,overhead,Pistol squatting multiple times/week while having Oly shoes definitely gives an edge.

  • @alozor13
    @alozor13 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    -Oly shoes... Only if you squat close stance high bar.
    -A belt only to be used for high volume days or maximum weights or for overload purpose... I don't need it for 99% of the time...
    -Wrist wraps ... You don't need those super flashy "gangsta wraps" either
    Expensive Knee sleeves like rehband SBD etc... Waste of money unless you compete and need the extra boost at the bottom of the lift (the hardest part) other than that, get some 5$ knee sleeves from CVS, Walmart, Walgreen if you worry too much about keeping the knees warm...
    Same hors for knee wraps... Waste of $
    I see way too many guys with giant blue lever belt, big bright colorful wrist wraps that says "gangsta" on them, red knee wraps, yellow and black nike combat tights, elbow sleeves and bolt romaleos... It's the gym not a cosplay contest...

    • @DavakiDnD
      @DavakiDnD 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      i squat low bar wide stance with oly shoes. my femur is extremely long, and it helps me not fold over. being this close minded doesnt help anyone.
      "A belt only to be used for high volume days or maximum weights or for overload purpose... "
      but... thats like every training situation that exists.

    • @alozor13
      @alozor13 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're not supposed to fold over unless you have weak quads, poor ankle mobility... Plus because of the raised heel, you actually increasing the risk of folding over at the bottom... Doesn't make sense... Work on your form because you're using them as a crutch. As for the belt, I never ever use it for deadlift and only for heavy squat sets because it put more stress on my low back.

    First thing I bought was my adipowers. After 6 months of squats, I noticed I could benefit from the heel, so I decided to take the leap and order them. Second item was my inzer belt, that I got when my deadlift went beyond 400 lbs. I grew up with a beginning of scoliosis, so I needed a little protection, when pulling over twice my bodyweight. These items didnt make me superman at the gym, but I definitely noticed improvements. Some might be placebos resulting from that feeling of safety, but I cant deny the positive impact of those two investmensts. The next thing I might order is shoes for my deadlift ( and bench) since I tore my chucks open !

    I train at a bodybuilding gym but the coach/owner has an athlete mindset and he allows me to powerlift there, as long as my hands are on the weights until it drops on the ground.
    I train barefooted and use used bandages to wrap my knees.
    I think you need the equipment to assist you so that your training is going to be much smoother, like having a squat shoes and high quality knee sleeves is very beneficial, but if you really have the passion, you'll make it work!
    First equipment? Weightlifting belt, of course!

    When I first started, I train with virtually nothing, all I had was flat shoes and some chalk. First piece of equipment I bought was lifting shoes, cost me £65, then a belt (£40), then knee sleeves (£15 a pair). I also have a pair of flat shoes that cost me £7. You don't need to fork out £300 for all the powerlifting gear, the cheap stuff will do the job just fine. I've had my lifting shoes for 2 years now and they're still in excellent condition.

  • @LarsRR
    @LarsRR 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    I feel like that really depends. If your doing bodybuilding, lifting straps are a cool thing to have. You're not about PRs and grip strength but growing so for partial DLs and heavy rows. Get the Back to failure, not the forearms. When I started lifting I was a little Sissy getting a belt, straps, wraps, Romeleos.... even freakin glows... Well. I had to find out the hard way, or the expensive way, that all this made me weaker. I had 0 grip strength, didn't know where to but the bar at squats... I then started to lift raw and can now lift 450 raw and squat 315. Only equipment I would really recommend, is get a proper belt Inzer 13mm, yes its costly, but mine is now two years old, still works superb, and was worth the investment. And for heavy squats, Romeleos are better than Chucks or what ever. But better work without any gear at all than equipped like a Transformer.

    Adipowers are my first investment to lifting. Started using them from this past January so about a year into my lifting career. Before that, I just squatted in flat jordans lol and it affected my form because it was really hard for me to go below parallel and also my heels would slightly go up sometimes. So I bought the Adipowers and started doing mobility work and noticed a big improvement on my form and how easy it felt to hit depth although I give credit to mostly my mobility work for that. But I do plan to go back to flat shoes to work on my ankle mobility.

    I believe having quality equipment can definitely give you a competitive edge and it also offers safety benefits. I think expensive equipment can also make a person train harder, smarter, etc because you are investing more of yourself into your health/strength/fitness. If you don't hit your goals because you are lazy/no time not only are you still out of shape but you are also out of a lot of $$. Expensive equipment isn't necessary but it can help for sure

    I never had equipment for like 2-3 years. The gym I worked out at had belts available and I got some wrist straps from the lost and found (washed them obviously) and just focused on lifting. Made mad gains, but now that I'm into powerlifting and strength training...man the gear helps... no lie.

    High top chucks, and my dad's belt from college. I haven't wanted/needed anything else... At least as of now (3 years of lifting).

    Got my romoleos 3 yesterday after 2 and a half years of powerlifting. Was using metcons till now for squats. Honestly, I got them out of curiousity. I have no ankle mobility issues. The romos feel nice to squat in.
    I thought my metcons were stable but these romos though...My feet are locked down.

    When I first started strength training I wore chucks cause that's what the norm was. But I would just take them off during my lifts anyway. I bought a belt and I didn't even use it that much except for my last sets. I think accessories are necessary for some people but some people have developed enough strength to not use accessories unless its completely necessary. I think only when necessary. Otherwise keep building strength with what you were born with!

    I started off with normal Nike shoes, done generic basketball shorts, an old shirt, and knee supports because I've always had problems with them, after a long time working out in still using the same equipment. I've made some huge improvements, I weigh 165 but my squat is 315 so I think that's a win, I'm planning to gain weight though

    Once the weights got heavier I ditched the tennis shoes for squatting and got Oly shoes. I deadlift in $30 chucks from zappos but the next purchase might be a belt. I think you should buy as you need and as you progress.
    No one wakes up one day and decides to be a powerlifter. So they shouldn't think that they need all the equipment to start out. It's like a beginner who wants to play basketball. Just buy a Basketball and get the fundamentals. Then you can get accessories and special shoes as you get better and play competitively.

    I know most powerlifters gonna hate on me for this but. My best investment went into a pair of lifting straps. Not because i dont wanna work on my grip strength. But more of the fact that i have really really sweaty palms (occasionally drip with sweat) and the gyms i go to in singapore dont allow chalk. So straps help me get the most out of my workouts.

    I agree with basically everything you guys said. I've been lifting just for about 2 yrs now and I just bearly got my first pair of expensive equipment a couple weeks ago (is my Romaleos for them skwaats). But before getting these in the past period of my first 2 yrs I didn't really use anything, but wrist wraps (really only cause of my baby ass wrists -___- ) but other than that nothing really, now a days I use straps just from time to time. But yeah, you can make hella gainz and keep making them just focusing on getting the basics down in lifting properly.

    I lift barefoot (at home) and use wrist wraps cuz I got issues with tendonitis/arthritis and inflammation in general. I am absolutely tempted to buy lifting shoes because the benefits (or their...impact) are super-obvious, but I also run and need expensive footwear for that, so...that'll have to wait. Wrist wraps definitely paid off, I use them every workout and my wrists are a lot better (no more inflammation at all).

    Harbinger wrist wraps, first thing ever and I don't think I even understood the point of them I just wanted to feel hardcore. Since then picked up adipower trainers which for the price of a regular sneaker was no big deal and definitely a smart purchase, slingshot knee sleeves recently just due to overall squat volume increasing and between that and working on my feet all day, my knees were taking a toll. Belt and Slingshot being shipped now which I'm excited for. I

    What weight level would you consider a good point to start considering a belt for squats/deadlifts? Something like 1x the body weight or less?
    I am quite new at this and trying to learn to brace myself properly. I just have it in the back of my head to get a belt at some point.
    Oh and why ppl tend to not use the low-cut version of the Chucks. Wouldn't they be better for ankle mobility?

    I bought a belt and wrist wraps only about a month into training, and I'd definitely say it's 100% worth it, I kind of wish I bought a higher quality belt, because I'm going to buy and inzer this month. The one piece of equipment I don't think was THAT worth it, is my Romaleos II WL shoes, because I bought them, then a few weeks later, now my coach doesn't let me use them for squatting at all, and only lets me use it for bench, when I don't even need it for bench at all, so it's almost pointless :(

    Ive been lifting two years so still a beginner in my opinion. But ive only gotten a belt due to having a bad back. (Im only 16 so having a bad back is well, bad of course) but in all honesty I think everyone should have a belt after learning basic mechanics. It in a sense does help with strength. But I think when going heAvy on squats or dl's its better to be safe than sorry. I use it mainly for safety, and it makes lifting a bit more comfortable. Just my opinion. And anyone that can share theirs with me or tips that'd be awesome

    I bought olympic shoes within a year of beginning to lift, before I started powerlifting specifically, because my gym held belts. They made a big difference because I had very inflexible calves, which would mess up my squat. I was able to squat to depth with the olympic shoes.

    If all you're doing is barbell training, then all you need is Chucks and some sports tape if you have bad joints. Otherwise, just the Chucks when starting out. If you plan on doing some cardio on the side, some crosstrainers wouldn't hurt to protect those knees when running.

    Theres necesarry equipment and then theres the ones I call "luxury" for example a belt, isnt something you really need but it can help. Same with shoes. Hell I still lift in basketball mid tops because they feel the best for me. Its all up to preference when it comes to shoes.

    Order of equipment powerlifters should get.
    1.Oly shoes(let's face it ankle mobility is hard for beginners)
    2.Knee sleeves just for protection especially for volume work. not to increase the lift.
    3.Belt would be last, people r getting lever belts more as a fashion statement these days rather then learning the proper breathing patterns. I fell into the crowd.

    Perfect example of minding you're own business. My first year into lifting, nothing. As I got stronger and weights got heavier, i invested into gym gear to help protect my wrist and knees. Bands for mobility and towels haha. Learn the basics and get the form down and then decide what you need.
