Just to add - experienced lifters are also going to respect you a heap more if they can see you put your ego aside and perfect your form in the beginning before you start throwing weight on. It might make your beginning slow, but it'll speed you up in the long run! Practicing shitty form will only lead you to injuries and you'll have to go back to the beginning.
I only hit 225 on deadlift for reps about a week ago, have been deadlifting for about a year. Im extremely happy with my progress, because my 1RM used to be 90kg like 6 months ago, now i do them for 5X5, its barely any weight in comparison, but that doesnt matter because theres obvious increasing gains.
And here I am watching this video with my legs sore as fuck. Lol I just started about 2 months ago. And I'm still a noob, but I feel like I learned a lot about lifting in the past 2 months. Just read articles and watch videos about lifting, and don't be afraid to ask questions from others at the gym. Everyday I feel like I get exponentially better in training. :)
***** What does that mean? I'm still progressing linearly and lifting more and more constantly. Soreness and tiredness has nothing to with how good results you get.
***** Well I've been neglecting my calves a lot, and I kind of went ham on them lol. Didn't seem too bad during the workout but after I went home I really felt them. I don't usually get sore or injured after working out (except my first week), but this time it got me. =P Also tried to do too much on the squat rack. You live and learn i guess.
Uchiha Madara Yeah I know what you mean. Before I worked out but never stayed with the program, but now I'm actually really motivated and sticking to a good solid routine. I look forward to going to the gym, and if I miss a workout, I feel a bit weird like somethings missing. lol A few people have been commenting on me and noticed some of my gains, and that really boosted my motivation and confidence as well =)
***** You know nothing about training, please stop. +bluex610 How often do you hit legs, unless you just started hitting legs extreme soreness is generally an indicator that you take too many days off in between. Try to do legs at least twice a week even if one of the days is a light recovery day.
Been lifting 3 years mainly a bodybuilding routine. Sometimes I'll do a powerlifting style sets, i am slowly transitioning to get my strength up though. My advice would be for a beginner (no particular order) 1. Stretching. Keep in mind an area that is not acting properly will affect another area of your body. Not stretching my hamstrings and legs in general eventually led to a lower back injury because it would make my back to round during my squat. 2. Mind muscle connection. Definitely very important during each rep is to use the muscle, rather than swing or just push. I'm still finding a mind muscle connection for my lats, but as soon as i found that mind muscle connection for a particular muscle, i saw gains like no tomorrow. 3. Form. Keeping good form will help you achieve a good mind muscle connection. 4. Breathe. Every rep. Helps you get through the reps, especially when you're struggling. 5. Rest. Go for an easy routine when you begin, 3 days on 4 days off or something like that. Then increase it if your good and rested and feel like you can go for another day. 6. Listen to your body. Some days you'll understand the feeling where your body feels great but your mind is tired. Go to the gym, but if it's the other way around then you may want to skip the gym and recover. I've also falling sick quite a few times, due to a fried CNS (as a result of working out too hard the previous day). Rest over working out, always. 7. Try different exercises. As many as you can, you might feel a better muscle connection when you do a different exercise. 8. Eat well but enjoy what you eat. I didn't have the best diet but it also wasn't bad. Unless you're prepping for that next competition, I think you can get away with more than 1 cheat meal and achieve pretty good results. Having said that your diet is a big part of your results. 9. Spotting - Help other people at the gym if they're struggling during their rep. You might make a friend or a gym partner or at least they'll help you when you need help. 10. Read and listen what works for other people, TH-cam, forums, friends etc and try to apply it to your workout. Everyone has their stories but not everyone agrees on everything. You'll eventually figure out that there are a lot of bullshit myths floating around and it's a lot simpler than you can imagine but what makes it difficult is that not everyone are able to apply it to their busy schedules, especially when it comes to diet. 11. This shit takes time, not 1 month. 12. Steriods. Get your foundation first, then come back and consider it. I would also definitely recommend Physiques of Greatness on TH-cam for fitness advice, as they do cover different approaches to getting results for different lifestyles. Good Luck.
Three major thing everyone who's starting out should do is 1. Strech...and I mean EVERY time you workout. It not only gets you limber and you wont have as many problems later in life, but it also helps alot with getting rid of soreness from overstraining yourself (which almost all novice lifters do) 2. Dont go too hard too early. if you've been a couch potatoe for 10 years and barely worked out, your body isnt ready to go and workout five times a day. it'll just be counter productive. Start off by doing maybe twice a week or three times a week. Do that for a few months and then progress from there. 3. Sepepate the muscle groups you're working out if you workout alot. So do for example biceps and back on monday, twuesday you do legs and shoulders. Basicly you want atleast 24 hours of resting a certain muscle. Otherwise you wont gain.
Plague DocOh forgot, 4. Work on your form. If you have shitty form and you lift heavy the injury risk increases ten fold. It's incredibly stupid to lift more weight incorrectly to look "cool" (you're in reality just insecure and seek approval of others) than to lift correctly and build yourself up. As a personal trainer and powerlifter I demand that my clients use proper form otherwise I wont help them.
Consistency is way more important than intensity in the beginning. If you get on the regular routine for at least a few months, your body will adjust and you'll find a groove that works for you. I think a lot of newbs make the mistake of going to hard too soon trying to make those fast gains...not physically able to handle it yet and burn out too fast. If you really want to see those solid changes...you need to get used to being patient and find a program you enjoy doing.
I would say to go with friends. Not only are you less embarassed/anxious but when you have someone who is motivated like you, you can push each other. For someone like me i don't like letting people down and im also very competitive so when i had someone to train with i would always have amazing workouts.
I stopped squatting for about 3 months because of time constraints, my own laziness and me subconsciously avoiding it. If you get a muscle sore and you don't go back and work out that muscle again, you subconsciously create a barrier between you and that work out. This happened with me with squatting. There were times when the squat rack was free for ages and I thought ''let me just finish doing this dumbell presses.'' Then, someone took the rack, Intead of being pissed, I was relieved that I didn't have to squat. Unless you're in a team or somthin, you are your OWN boss. Frequency is key for beginners.
I really like this video. Getting into the basics is awesome. I know you guys are pumped out but if yall could do a "basic lifting" video to show proper lifting ettiquete would be awesome. Cause i am a beginner who is starting lightweight lifting right now and i wanna know the proper form to lifting
I used to have a problem where I didn't want to look like a "casual" but surprisingly the ego lifting video helped with that alot. I remember there was a guy in a wheelchair that was hella skinny who was benching twice as much as me the day I watched that video and I could literally hear the video run through my mind and just focused on my own shit (that guy is a beast by the way really good motivation!) Recently I got overconfident on my squats cause I had been killing it and rep twice what I should of and inflamed my tendon in my right leg causing me to miss legs for two weeks now. Really bummed out but learned a valuable lesson as well. It was really weird as well cause felt really good until I jumped in the car the next day and literally couldn't drive to work :( I didn't take the time to warm up properly as well which most likely contributed alot but I should of just taken it nice and steady and kept hitting those numbers rather than going all out as much as I could. Anyway thanks guys for the heads up wish I could of watched this vid two weeks ago but slowly catching up on these little gems lol
I get stuck so many times with teachers, coaches or other people who are trying to show me where to start and they start to use vocab for intermediate or advanced users. like, wtf is gains, cns, and frying? why are we speaking spanish? lol, j.k j.k. But seriously I'm a beginner. I get taking it slow and light in the gym. A friend once told me, "Only work out enough so that you can come back tomorrow and do it again." Something Bart said in this episode I really liked as well was, "focus on form and technique" Oh man, I really wish I even knew what form and technique even looked like. I've had personal trainers in the past and they would never focus on form or technique. I've had to study mixtape and videos of my favorites to get hints and clues of what to do. But It's hard without a good spotter. I've been told so many times quality over quantity and yet i've been taught so many times quantity over quality. There's clearly no argument about what's right. But, geez is it ever hard to remind oneself what to do when flying solo.
I get really intimidated at the gym. Like im there with my 7kg weights doing shoulder press and theres a guy next to me doing to same with 40kg. I just feel like everyone is looking at me cause im tiny
Charlie Durrant you rare not alone; I'm probably one the skinnier guys that goes to my local gym and ive been going for over two years. just gotta have the "don't give a fuck" type of attitude about it. i think you're overthinking it too, the people you think are looking at you probably could care less of what you look like or how much you can or cannot lift, everybody that goes to the gym are too invested in their own workout to really care imo.
Charlie Durrant Everyone starts somewhere :) I wouldn't be worried, you will get stronger and the weight will go up, all it takes is time and consistency
Bro, don't even trip. Sometimes you'll even hear people openly making fun of you too. I remember when I first started lifting, I was super skinny. Sometimes some people would comment on me, or try to make fun of me. I paid them no mind, and knew that they're approval meant nothing to me. Their own insecurities will make them try to talk you down or belittle you, but pay them no mind. Just go and do your lifts, and mind your business. If I had key then get to me, I'd never be able to squat 315 now, or bench 225, or deadlift 335 on my working sets. Just go there and do your thing.
Hey don't feel down. I'm that atm, my bench is piss weak at around 40kgx8, which took me 2 months to get to. And my shoulders were around yours at the start. It's all about how you go about it as well. If you don't care about tryna look big or impressing girls then you can focus on yourself. Because when it comes down to it; they aren't telling you how heavy shit should be for you, it's all you.
You guys should do a CNS video. I know what it is but you guys always 'cryptically' refer to it and it'd be cool if you dedicated a video to the topic for some of the newbies. Also, agree completely on the breathing part. It took six months for me to actually stop holding my breath when lifting heavy
Hopefully ill remember this since ive been wanting to lift forever but there really isnt a gym close by, which I know isnt the best excuse Ive always been a tiny bit pudgy, but last year I started getting love handles and now I look a little extra
Hey Bart, I'm a long time subscriber to your channel, and recently I came across Christian Guzman's channel. I was wondering what your opinion is on him as a bodybuilder as well as his TH-cam channel and his videos?
I've never worked on my upper body consistently because I always feel clueless, or out of place/pathetic. I will try to start working it from now on, but I'm sure the clueless part isn't gonna fix itself. Any resources on proper form, workout plans, ect?
Hey guys I need some tips. I'm a 15 year old and I workout. But, it's an on and off workout. I would workout for 1-2 months then stop for 1-2 months. So it seems as if I'm a newbie again. So when I go to the gym, my buddies tell me the my bench form is weird. I have my palms up and I have the bar laying on the bottom of my hand. How can I change my form but also be able to maintain the same weight I bench with.
I work out pretty hard every single day, I never workout for less than an hour and most of my workouts are over two hours but I never get sore anymore.... I love the sore feeling I get from weights, what can I do to change my workout? I do a lot of bench related workouts, should I focus on something else?
I totally agree but I think when it comes to legs no matter how light you go your always gunna be sore but with proper form and rep ranges suited to the individual i think that it is meaningless, great video none the less
When ever you mention jay cutler I think of the Bears qb. When you said think of your fav athletes and said jay cutler I thought you were dumb as hell but then realized I'm dumb as hell lol
Am i still a beginner i been working out since i was ten at golds and now im 15 and worked out at school for football with hang snatch cleans and stuff.i dont know what level am i
i just joined the gym for weight loss so of course i do hiit cardio bt i make sure to hit the machines and dumbbells. ive done pilates for several months so my legs can take WAY more weight than my arms. so i either do 10lb dumbbells and 20/30 curl bar. i want to hit the barbell and tbh its very intimidating. like i know i cant lift major weight but i want to train with the bar alone. but being the only girl, chuncky, with glasses, and only 19 around all these buff ass dudes i get kind of scared cause i feel im not doing shit right. and like geo said, i feel like a little bitch xD i wish i had a guy friend at least that could go with me and help me over come my barbell fears. I almost did it today but i kept getting starred at by these buff af guys and walked away o u o ONE DAY
Anthony Lin I feel that ass to grass is better since you get a more 'full' range of motion, and since it seems to work me out better than just parallel. Plus you get that booty mang, all the girls will be like "daaaamn lemme pinch those cheeks!"
At a minimum, squat down until your hip joint is below your knee joint. After that point it's all preference. Find where you're most comfortable. I tend to go as low as I can without having my pelvis start tucking under (aka buttwink)
Anthony Lin Honestly, both are fine, BUT if you really want to get that glute activation and build up better muscle in a squat sesh, then ass to ground would be a good idea. If your knee is hurting doing ass to ground though, I would stick to parallel and work on your range of motion. Hope that helps :)
That's what happened to me lol I'm skinny and it was my first time at the gym and I just started doing 85 pound bicep curls I was so sore the whole fucking week
When I started lifting I thought i would be lookin' like Kai Greene in 1 month but now after a while I know it takes years upon years to see real gains
Depends who you are though and the supps you take I'm the same way as I don't see gains as fast but two of my friends went from skinny to big in like 5-6 months
Urban Dictionary: Gains is best described as a lifestyle that many take to put on muscle and get into shape. The term has been popularized by the hodgetwins youtube channel. SHOUT OUT LORD KEITH AND LORD KEVIN!
***** thanks and I do have a supervisor watching me as I lift and have 3 spotters cause people in my school aren't really strong so I have my supervisor plus 3 spotters.
beginners...please take advantage of the fact that you are able to make gains on much lower workload/volume..dont worry, soon you'll have to do a shit ton more to progress. milk those new gains while you can !
First time I lifted I went ham, had T-rex arms the entire next day. Walking out in public had to pretend to text the entire time cause I couldn't straighten out my arms.
RLprod My boyfriend did that his first time lifting because it was at school. During his PE class he was the only guy that was really thin and not strong. So he tried to lift a lot and the next few days he couldn't move his arms.
Lifting advice for beginners, say don't fry CNS, how are beginners meant to know what that is? Using gym jargon is why it can be so hard for beginners.
I bake my CNS. Fried CNS doesn't fit my macros.
Best comment of the day
***** OooOooO sounds good.
Just add a scoop of protein powder to make it healthy.
I was gonna comment something clever, but you just stole all my glory. well done.
The entire barbell brigade crew is hilarious and totally real. Keep it up!
When I'm lifting i take a minute to think: "What would Lu do?"
Bane391 And you just end up posing in front of the camera? jk I know he's actually a good lifter.
mnqkoldee Unless we are talking about the bench. Get rekt Lu
He would make Alex really fucking uncomfortable.
Except on bench 😜😜😝😂😂😂
Bane391 It felt good to give you the 100th like.
You should get Lu on JKNews
LU needs to go on JKNEWS just one episode it would be hella funny
martin lift Lol. All the nin-lifters will be like "WHERE DID THIS GEM COME FROM?" XD
Martin he would probably just flex the whole time

thank you so much this barbell brigade!! please do more of these it really helped me. now im more motivated to hit my goals!
I just started lifting yesterday, thanks for the video! Its good to know that taking my time with form is encouraged.
Lu definitely needs his own channel. Untapped comedy gold in that man.
Love watching these videos before I lift!
Not for nothing, but Nadeem kills it with the editing. Makes this shit 10 times funnier.

Wow , this video helped me a lot. You named every mistake I've done. I was wondering why I fucked up and stopped. Now I know what I need to do.

uriel jimenez Bruh, they do have a shirt like that.
Hopefully ill remember this since ive been wanting to lift forever but there really isnt a gym close by, which I know isnt the best excuse
Ive always been a tiny bit pudgy, but last year I started getting love handles and now I look a little extra
Could you explain a good training routine for beginners? I'm interested in learning how to power lift, but I have no clue what lifts to start with.
Hey Bart, I'm a long time subscriber to your channel, and recently I came across Christian Guzman's channel. I was wondering what your opinion is on him as a bodybuilder as well as his TH-cam channel and his videos?
why bart look so cuddly the way his hat pushes his ear out? makes me want to pinch his cheeks and tickle his belly. baby bart sooo wubbly

Lu needs to make his own channel
You should do a video about breathing while lifting (:
I've never worked on my upper body consistently because I always feel clueless, or out of place/pathetic. I will try to start working it from now on, but I'm sure the clueless part isn't gonna fix itself. Any resources on proper form, workout plans, ect?
Hey Bart, what size do you wear for the barbell brigade shirts?
good shit homies
Almost every video with Lu starts with him flexing LOL
Hey guys I need some tips. I'm a 15 year old and I workout. But, it's an on and off workout. I would workout for 1-2 months then stop for 1-2 months. So it seems as if I'm a newbie again. So when I go to the gym, my buddies tell me the my bench form is weird. I have my palms up and I have the bar laying on the bottom of my hand. How can I change my form but also be able to maintain the same weight I bench with.
What's CNS? Central Nervous System?
True
How many days a week do you recommend training for someone who's newer?
I work out pretty hard every single day, I never workout for less than an hour and most of my workouts are over two hours but I never get sore anymore.... I love the sore feeling I get from weights, what can I do to change my workout? I do a lot of bench related workouts, should I focus on something else?
Does the sling shot work
Kiernan Melahn Yes.
Yes but people won't need it until around they can bench around 2 plates (for the red).slightly less for the blue
I just started like a few weeks ago. I'm 5'8 120 lbs. and breathing helps so much. How can skinny guys gain mass quicker?
I totally agree but I think when it comes to legs no matter how light you go your always gunna be sore but with proper form and rep ranges suited to the individual i think that it is meaningless, great video none the less
I go to the gym when all the old people do, so I feel like a fucking beast! it doesn't matter how much I'm lifting.
When ever you mention jay cutler I think of the Bears qb. When you said think of your fav athletes and said jay cutler I thought you were dumb as hell but then realized I'm dumb as hell lol
Where's Alex ?
Hi!
mangademon213 was wondering the same thing...
keepindafunk They normally record multiple videos in one session.Alex probably couldn't participate in that specific one.
Always practice correct form! Number 1 for sure 😂
I wish you guys did tutorials for beginners
Am i still a beginner i been working out since i was ten at golds and now im 15 and worked out at school for football with hang snatch cleans and stuff.i dont know what level am i
GOTTA GET SWOLE ENOUGH TO WEAR BARBELL BRIGADE GEAR
i just joined the gym for weight loss so of course i do hiit cardio bt i make sure to hit the machines and dumbbells. ive done pilates for several months so my legs can take WAY more weight than my arms. so i either do 10lb dumbbells and 20/30 curl bar. i want to hit the barbell and tbh its very intimidating. like i know i cant lift major weight but i want to train with the bar alone. but being the only girl, chuncky, with glasses, and only 19 around all these buff ass dudes i get kind of scared cause i feel im not doing shit right. and like geo said, i feel like a little bitch xD i wish i had a guy friend at least that could go with me and help me over come my barbell fears. I almost did it today but i kept getting starred at by these buff af guys and walked away o u o ONE DAY
How long is "The Beginning"?
Good question
How low should you go on a squat? I've seen people go ass to the ground then I see people with their thighs parallel to the ground
Anthony Lin I feel that ass to grass is better since you get a more 'full' range of motion, and since it seems to work me out better than just parallel. Plus you get that booty mang, all the girls will be like "daaaamn lemme pinch those cheeks!"
Anthony Lin All the way, unless you're training for something very specific. Why wouldn't you?
At a minimum, squat down until your hip joint is below your knee joint. After that point it's all preference. Find where you're most comfortable.
I tend to go as low as I can without having my pelvis start tucking under (aka buttwink)
Anthony Lin Honestly, both are fine, BUT if you really want to get that glute activation and build up better muscle in a squat sesh, then ass to ground would be a good idea. If your knee is hurting doing ass to ground though, I would stick to parallel and work on your range of motion. Hope that helps :)
Anthony Lin Alan Thrall has a video which answers this exact question. Look him up brah
Lu is looking tanned af!
I love roscoe's too! xD
Good question.
I just started a 4 day split this week, I'm just sitting here on my computer about to fall asleep. I think I overdid it.
The gym is so expensive! If it were cheaper I'd be in there more often.
Laura Trezise You can go to a cheaper gym, all you need is a squat rack.
Too many beginners want to get results right away and don't realize it takes time
Max out on flyes
That's what happened to me lol I'm skinny and it was my first time at the gym and I just started doing 85 pound bicep curls I was so sore the whole fucking week
hi
Why is Geo even giving advice? She doesn't even know how to lift properly.
Lu in jknews
When I started lifting I thought i would be lookin' like Kai Greene in 1 month but now after a while I know it takes years upon years to see real gains
Wtf lol Ya it's all about hard work fam
I know lol
Depends who you are though and the supps you take I'm the same way as I don't see gains as fast but two of my friends went from skinny to big in like 5-6 months
you forgot to tell them that it is vital to buy every supplement on the market because they really are more important than food
Urban Dictionary:
Gains is best described as a lifestyle that many take to put on muscle and get into shape.
The term has been popularized by the hodgetwins youtube channel.
SHOUT OUT LORD KEITH AND LORD KEVIN!
is 10 months still a beginner for powerlifting?
***** oh so then what if u are 5'10 170lbs and have a 285 squat 285 deadlift and 225 bench?
***** thanks I got mainly intermediate. but when is the youngest age when u can compete cause im only 14?
***** thanks and I do have a supervisor watching me as I lift and have 3 spotters cause people in my school aren't really strong so I have my supervisor plus 3 spotters.
I wish I saw this video when I started two years ago... now i'm plagued with chronic tendonitis
Rip
That guy Lu is funny
\,,/,😈\,,/
I only grill my CNS...frying won't fit my macros.
So, if you apply this to losing your virginity.... hilarious.
beginners...please take advantage of the fact that you are able to make gains on much lower workload/volume..dont worry, soon you'll have to do a shit ton more to progress. milk those new gains while you can !
Where's alex tho?
Why the fuck Lu isn`t on JKNews he`s hilarious?!
I'm good with looking dumb, I do that all the time
First time I lifted I went ham, had T-rex arms the entire next day.
Athalia hahaha the struggle is real.
I'm 6'2 and about 130lbs, I'm fucked no matter what I do
Bart need to work on his squat form doe
Take in how this was recorded before Jun 17th, prob like 3 weeks ago.

WE WANT LU ON JKNEWS

Lifting advice for beginners, say don't fry CNS, how are beginners meant to know what that is? Using gym jargon is why it can be so hard for beginners.
True but I think the video would be more beneficial for beginners if they would explain it or not mention it
