The Medium isn't my kind of game. A walking simulator with light puzzle and gameplay elements sprinkled throughout. The story has its moments - it's a descent premise - but remains ho-hum for large stretches.
It suffers from several common issues that plague modern gaming. A protagonist that doesn't know when to pipe down, and lacks of subtlety. The Medium spells everything out to and for us.
It's a game I wouldn't give much thought to beyond one key fact. The studio behind the Medium, Bloober Team are helming the Silent Hill 2 Remake.
Despite the Medium being a ho-hum experience, I am glad I played it. It gives me a better idea of what to expect with the Silent Hill 2 Remake. What I experienced doesn't give me much hope for the Remake - not that I had much before.
Now, to be fair, I'm not a fan of remakes - something I've made clear throughout several videos. Of games that do not need a remake, Silent Hill 2 would be near the very top of my list. It's was very much lighting in a bottle. The expectations and reverence for such a title makes it something that's going to be next to impossible to top. I don't care who would be making the remake - to expect anything else would be a fool's errand.
Before playing The Medium, I was only familiar with Bloober Team through osmosis. I was aware of the many criticisms thrown bloober's way. For their horror output, and specific issues with The Medium. I did have some preconceived notions going in of what to expect.
I can see how some have come to have certain interpretations and conclusions of The Medium. I found myself not coming to the same conclusions and interpretation at points.
It's not like the game's plot doesn't have issues. It has plenty of them. There's a lack of subtlety. There are several questionable choices in how they deal with heavy subject matter. While it looks great, there's little beyond the surface level.
Having now played The Medium, I do see a different trajectory in how the Silent Hill 2 remake might play out from what I had in mind before. I don't have much hope for it, but now it's in a different way.
Bloober team can build out a descent atmosphere, and the dual reality system is intriguing. But they do next to nothing interesting with it - making it worse with what they've done with the technology.

When the game makes it clear that its HER trauma which has manifested into something that is harming others, and can only be stopped by her dying, then for me its pretty clear that we're meant to think that the world would be better off without her.
Blair Witch had the same problem, having a protagonist who will go on to harm others his trauma unless he dies first.

There are people that think you're a hater online for being suspicious of Silent Hill 2 Remake. Which is wild because Konami is about as trustworthy as that uncle in the family that is always down on his luck and always has a story when he comes around. I could write an essay about why Konami doesn't actually care about Silent Hill so I'll keep it short and simple:
-They put pyramid head in literally anything other than Silent Hill 2 (if you know you know)
-They lost the master discs for Silent Hill 2 & 3.
    - They didn't make a Silent Hill game for over a decade
-They just happened to skip over the first actual game in the series in favor of the sequel everyone knows. Maximize profitability. (See MGS3 Remake for similar strategy).
-They stepped out of the gaming market to maximize their pachinko gambling profits. And when Japan set new laws that threatened those profits guess who walk-of-shamed back to gaming with two remakes of two beloved games from flagship franchises? Konami.
-Then... then they hired Blooper Team
The people who like Blooper's games won't get this (I'd like to see just how many people, who have also finished the Silent Hill trilogy, have finished The Medium and enjoyed it) but Blooper does not absolutely does not have the storytelling chops to deliver that story of Silent Hill 2 with the subtlety it requires. They wouldn't know subtlety if it their masked up trauma ghost told them in the bargin bin silent hill knockoff zone.

They had a somewhat interesting concept with the split screen and it was arguably the game´s main appeal, and they had to file a patent so nobody but them could waste it like they did. In cases like the Nemesis system and WB, it´s still disappointing but at least kind of "in character" for WB, but an actual game dev studio?. Whenever you see stuff like that coming from people like them you have to remember that they´ll say things like "We value creativity, making games is hard, being creative is hard" and all that blabery just to say "welp, no one gets to be creative with this, except for us that is", all that for something that not only they didn´t even pioneer but they also don´t have any plans for. No wonder Konami took interest in them.
Also it would surprise me if they can resist the urge to make James and Maria as chatty as this game´s mc, the game has too many subtleties going on, can´t let the players figure them out for themselves, they are too stupid, they need us, the smart writers, to sit them down so we can explain everything, how else are they supposed to get it. How are they supposed to understand James, he sad, he guilty, so we make him look at the mirror while looking sad and guilty, can´t have a single instance where players have to use one braincell for themselves.
Also the smart writers: "The girl´s name was Rose, she ded, therefore withering roses, get it? Oh yes yes, smart and original we know, creative even."

    • @CheshireCad
      @CheshireCad หลายเดือนก่อน +7

It would actually be a great move if the other characters, especially Maria, had more dialog and ambient small-talk.
But, here's the important part, James himself does a shitty awkward job of carrying these conversations. Just a total limp noodle, deflating the mood like a party balloon. Reinforce the fact that, honestly, James is a pathetically lonely man, that doesn't even attempt to form any kind of human connection with anyone other than Mary.
Maybe, as the game goes on, he starts to engage with Maria more and he shows glimmers of emotion and even happiness. Make it clear why Mary is so important to him, which is something that the original kinda faltered at. Which would make Maria's repeated deaths way more impactful to the player.
...But obviously, this would require good, subtle writing to pull off. So it feels kinda silly to even mention it in this context.

On the note of video game patents it's become common practice to file them to protect yourself not as a way to strangle the industry on creative ideas, the ideas behind guitar hero were patented for example but even in the fact of that we got rockstar and now stuff like fortnite festival - I don't wanna say you can do it but most of the time from a huge developer or company it's a form of protection against patent trolling.
Obviously this doesn't stop bad actors from making very poorly strung together games to patent something and force anything that comes out after to pay licence fees to use the mechanic, I think some guy held a vague patent for what is essentially every FPS or MMO game at it's core for two/three decades and forced companies to pay them royalties.
also there was like paltalk who went after every major MMO developer like jagex/blizzard etc for the idea of connected pcs over virtual spaces and they're still doing it today using whatever US state which is most likely to win them the case.

I feel like bloopers games are kinda a prime example of issues within AAA development.
Large budgets to burn, that they don’t want the players to miss a beat or lose interest in, which leads to going on in trying to make some cinematic story with all the large beats hit in cutscenes.
The reason older games don’t suffer as much from this is, they didn’t have the money to afford a professional VA (if they even had one) to voice those “Wow, a key. For that lock! How useful that this key unlocks stuff!” Lines, or mocap studios for the long cinematics. That meant they had to make up for it through gameplay and environments. The players had to infer alot of meaning because the devs didn’t have the resources to implement them even if they wanted.
Nowadays with the amount of budget bloat we see they go hog wild and want to make movies, so you get games like this which are glorified shows so hyperfocused on telling a movie-like story rather than take advantage of games as a medium.

Eh, i dont rewlly care that they put a patent on their split screen approach for the two worlds.
It doesnt stop developers from using a realtime multi-world mechanic, Lords of the Fallen (while an equally bad game) I think handles the mechanic better.
90% of the time theres no reason for me to even see both worlds at the same time. Again, in Lords of the Fallen you can come to a path that clearly looks like something is behind it.... So you switch worlds, and have other mechanics feed into it like "If you stay in this world too long you will eventaully die because it gets progressivly harder"
Putting the game into split "solves" an issue that no one had. It does little to bring anything to a story telling front.

I just can't give a shit about Silent Hill anymore. The last good game was in 2003 and even SH3 was much more flawed the the first two. Horror lies in mystery and Silent Hill has been explained to death. There was even a game that puts the player in the house with Alessa during the ritual. Zero mystique. The well is dry. There's significantly more bad SIlent Hill games than good. One barely passable movie and one awful one. Terrible comics and more. People get so attatched to brands that they just can't let it die. It's just become a series of reconisable iconography that people are comfortable with and will buy toys of.

I agree that SH3 was flawed, particularly in its design. But I think Heather is such a strong character, that I really enjoyed the game and it makes up for the game's shortcomings.

@@fattiger6957 AT same time game had barely any plot beyond womanhood is scarry, birth a god for us. She interacts with like 3 nps in the entire game and just kills 9999999999 amount of enemies like it was doom, Game locations are uninspired. Mall, sewers, abandoned building. Amusement park was only used in intro.

silent hill's first four-ish games had immaculate vibes . that's what people want back . gameplay was always secondary to the absolutely immense vibes the games delivered

Let’s just take silent hill and make our own, Konami clearly isn’t doing anything productive with it.

10:05 They needed to wait for the technology to get there? Really? To show a splitscreen where one half shows a different environment? Oh man, yeah, we didn't have couch co-op Halo until the Medium came out! This reminds me of Todd talking about how they couldn't make Starfield until now because the technology wasn't there yet. Like, don't make me laugh.

Forgive me if this is pedantic, but I think the term "Fixed Camera Angle" doesn't apply to The Medium, as the camera is usually in motion. "Cinematic Camera Angles" maybe? In any case, I love this type of camera that frames the action screen-by-screen, like it's an adventure game. When done well, it's an incredible tool for the game's director.
