Is it weird that even though the game renowned for it's goofy humor and tone still manages to creep the shit out of me? Like I'm a adult man and that game over screen still scares the piss out of me.

now THIS is a game. so cool, i love the idea that you are in a haunted house, the workers are character, its a lot like working at a real haunt. Ive done that for many years and the humor is spot on. The tree monster not working at first was too good, and genuinely spooky monster designs. This is the kind of content i come to YT for!
I really wish some mad-lads would steal the concept of a horror theme-park where all the levels are 'movies' by some mad director. Or the horror scope & trap finding, for that matter. Really seems like an idea that could get iterated on into something genuinely great.
The style from the art you used in the thumbnail takes me back, I don't even know how to explain it. Something about a clean, anime-esque character draw with some grotesque surroundings. Also, for a 2001 Dreamcast title, these graphics look pretty nice.

I want to take a moment to do my duty and point out/recommend the YT channel SuperGreatFriend and the absolutely comprehensive playthrough of Illbleed that he did many years ago when his channel was first firing up. To this day SGF is my personal pick for most under-recognized YT Letsplayer and has TONS of amazing playthroughs including the D series, Zero Time Dilemma, Deadly Premonition, an incredibly obscure PC game called "Mode", and a bunch more.
I've always felt (ever since Supergreatfriend's original Let's Play for the game nearly 15 years ago) that the weakest aspect of ILLBLEED is its pacing and sequencing... Because it's all backwards and twisted up in a bad way! You get one single stage where all the mechanics work as normal, with the strongest and best character... and then you get, in order: > An all-combat stage with no Horror Monitor after unlocking the worst combat character > A minimal-trap stage that is very health-centric after unlocking the highest-Adrenaline lowest-health character > A maximal-trap gimmick stage where Adrenaline matters more than anything, after unlocking the lowest-Adrenaline character in the game > The best (IMO) and weirdest stage in the game where you get to unlock an entirely new character you don't know anything about... > And you never get to LEARN anything about him because the final stage is a gimmick level where YOUR CHARACTER DOESN'T EVEN APPEAR! All leading into an absurd boss rush / weirdo finale where the best bet, as mentioned in the video, is if you only ever bothered upgrading Eriko... And that's before we even get to the 100% conditions. I genuinely feel like the game would have been so much better served by starting as Jorg investigating all of the intro cast going missing, getting Eriko in KILLERMAN as a sort of ultimate character, and resquencing the levels and their gimmicks to better match the unlock order and keep mechanics more consistent. On the one hand all this goofy self-defeating energy is incredibly on brand for Michael Reynolds' and his Horrorland, but at the same time... Man, what could have been.
I got this game in a huge lot of Dreamcast games I bought for like 30 bucks in 2005 or something. I started playing and I took it seriously for like 5 minutes. Then I realized it was total nonsense and I loved it.
Glad to see I'm not the only one who fondly remembers this game. My brother had a copy and through dubious means I also got a copy, though shall we say, a little less original. Had lots of fun, so much fun that one of my projects when I was younger was adapting it to a tabletop RPG on IRC.
So I've listened to the opening cut you put in about a thousand times today.. largely due to TH-cam combination mobile combination trying to get basic things to work shenanigans... It happens to be at the top of the playlist so when I would refresh it and see if something would stick, I would almost always hear the intro again.. to this very minute, where I accidentally had to start it over again cuz I hit the button wrong.. it's still is like an odd joy glowy spot that warms me a little bit every time lol.. and the first 500 times I didn't get to the punchline yet lol and makes it better.. Very rare when a video game does that, and usually it's not a good game and usually a tiny part of it one.. tragic the very skewed circumstances towards its existence being known, there's a couple of games like that where It exists in a space that you don't pay attention to and usually has no merit or if it did it would exist outside of it.. But it just slipped through the cracks and never got the vampire masquerade bloodlines recognition decades later it deserved.. I kind of love everything about this, it I mean you know consulatus hud n different paradigms is notwithstanding. I know there were more than a few of these things that existed back then, especially in the existence of the adult directed adventure game that used to exist in a separate medium, But, genuinely the level of talent to inner child joy to edge lourdness to restraint is such a hard combination for the medium even nowadays.. possibly worse because of clout chasing existing as a possibility, but also much more so in that the stars aligning for that to become a thing are so much more accessible and distributable.. But certainly from the time, and certainly in the decade following, seeing something like this is just a unicorn.. there's a couple of examples of that kind of thing, and maybe it would always be a unicorn... Especially from a medium that has so many different things that people get out of it, many of which are not aligned and most of which would take a priority.. Good stuff! And thank you!
It took me till damn near the end of the video to realize they actually got THE AT THE TIME CURRENT VOICE OF SONIC, RYAN DRUMMOND in a game with a sonic clone that's too damn funny
Wonderful Job my man! This one seems to hit all the right notes and even though I have heard about it.... Thanks to you! I Now know about it! Thanks for doing these reviews. I like hearing about the lower budget, more extreme games! They help keep things interesting and as a Horror movie fan, for over 40 years, sometimes it's nice to know that there are still diamonds to be discovered :) Cheers from Montreal Quebec Canada
That one area in the game creeped me the fuck out. I think it was the factory with the conveyor belts all those corpses piled below were grotesque when you looked at them.
I had this on Dreamcast as a kid, must've only been 10 years old, and absolutely loved how batshit insane and wacky it is, even though I didn't understand most of it at the time. It is just an absolutely mental game and I must've spent weeks and weeks playing it, and it never really left my memory like a lot of other games did from back then, it left a pretty big imprint and I always try to bring it up when people mention weird horror games.
Great video, what a trippy game. Its like they took Conkers Bad Fur day's aesthetic and vibe and slapped it onto a horror game. Sorry for the comparison to conkers, but I couldnt think of a better way to describe it.
Im glad you made this video and there allot of similar youtubers making such gem vids its always about a game i never had the pleasure of playing from lack of not having the console available to me so they are a instant after watch download and emulate
While there’s many things that should be problematic, I feel like Erika’s speech should have had school faculty concerned. She was basically terrorized by her own obsessive sociopath father as a small child to the point where she really can’t be truly terrified easily.😳
Hell yeah, this is one of my favorite games!!! I rewatch Game Informer's Super Replay of it like every year lol I somehow got a copy of the USA (just the disc, but still!) for like $40 on e-Bay a few years ago, which is. Pretty insane and lucky to be honest, considering it looks like now they're listed for $300. Definitely cherishing that one forever. Anyway, was super excited to see this pop up on my feed!!!
This games feels strangely edgy, and hilarious, for a japanese made game. The made in china jab, the erotic figurine, the toy story satire? The camp? Maybe it's because 2001 was so long ago but I can't recall another japanese game that would have come off as edgy to a western audience as much as this does. I bought a dreamcast right after they killed it and had no idea it was this kind of game, and I'm probably not alone considering how badly it sold.
Long story short, the coolest Survival Horror you've never played. What an absolute experience of a game, nothing else quite like it. The quality increase from Blue Stinger to this is honestly staggering and that makes it all the more sad that this was their last game. If Crazy Games was able to continue they would have become a cult darling in the industry imo.
you should cover fragile dreams on the wii. even with its anime like graphic it can be pretty scary because you can hear the enemies but not see them unless you iluminate them. that can be nerve wreaking special the first time you see the woman who open in half to show a row of teeth and eyes.
i remember this game in a early 2000s game informer magazine. weirded me out but intrigued as a adolescent. the next page was capcom vs snk. both dreamcast games that was expanding my interest in gaming back in the day. anyways great video
That voice actor at 17:40 something sounds *exactly* like the guy here on youtube doing the voice overs for the "SCP Explained - Story & Animation" videos. Great voice 😀
Currently playing through Illbleed and it can be super annoying with some sections like monsters getting cheap hits and shitty hitboxes but looking past those it’s an awesome game
Why does an EKG run through the four senses? It's like saying "Sight" is when you pump bloods from lungs to heart and smell is when you pump the oxygenated blood to your body,
I certainly agree that Illbleed is very entertaining in its cutscenes and B-movie schlock stuff but I don't think it's a very good game to _play._ I felt the same way about your Blue Stinger review as well. Watching someone play or review these games it's very easy to imagine them as better than they are because you don't actually have t play them, you don't have to fumble with controls or deal with strange game mechanics, you pretty much just get the undiluted experience of the bizarre so bad it's good story and voice acting. But I don't know if I'd ever recommend either of these games to people to _play._ Watch an LP of? Sure! But play? I think it requires a very specific kind of person.
My go to channel for interesting games and good reviews. You are genuine and not compromised like a lot of others. You review unique and awesome games not something a studio has paid you to give a good review. Thank you rock kick ❤
supergreatfriend made an amazing let's play over a decade ago of this game. He showed the trailer in the beginning, explains the story, each character and their stats, every trap and ending. He goes through everything. Including small details, like when you're a puppet man and you see the line of lumberjacks. If you go to their line side you can pick up the manual for them how to hunt and the rules. The videos have an old charm being in low quality like old let's plays back when it was a new format.
Ah, those old high effort LPs from the somethingawful forums are some real gems, I remember following that one at the time. Thank goodness for the LP Archive
I always assumed teh numbers on the deparment store were meant to be yen, since that is a drastic difference from dollars (so they look crazy when they just change the currency but not the ammount.) like dividing by 100, so the console would be 160 instead of 16000
The music's Deadly Premonition-esque. The dialogue is very Harvester. Etc. It's wearing so many inspirations + influences on its sleeve but Illbleed comes off as wholly original regardless. That's craft. Oh man I just realized this pre-dates DP so maybe the influence went the other way there...
I love Illbleed! I love it so much that, no joke, I sometimes accidentally refer to Lani Minella as Eriko Christy. After hearing the tragic story of its creator, I hope his dream gets fulfilled one day by having this game get remade on multiple platforms.
Took me a second to realize who the VA was for purple hair girl. Fucking LANI MINELLA xD She really was in just about everything back then. Will also forever be the only voice of Nancy Drew in the long time game series
"or buying a copy for an inflated price" That price isn't "inflated", which would imply anyone is artificially raising the price. Its just an old out of print item only of interest to collectors. Collectors' items have organically high prices.
I really think the hud of this game could have been massively redone sight, hearing, smell and sixth sense all serve the exact same purpose in the exact same way just give us one sixth sense gage and make that the thing that points out traps
I've been waiting for you to play one of Dreamcast's bizarre survival horror game. It's incredible that both Blue Stinger and Illbleed are SEGA'S obscure games.

I have, and never will, play a more batshit crazy game than illbleed…. I loved it.
This game is so unhinged, I love it!
You get one single stage where all the mechanics work as normal, with the strongest and best character... and then you get, in order:
> An all-combat stage with no Horror Monitor after unlocking the worst combat character
> A minimal-trap stage that is very health-centric after unlocking the highest-Adrenaline lowest-health character
> A maximal-trap gimmick stage where Adrenaline matters more than anything, after unlocking the lowest-Adrenaline character in the game
> The best (IMO) and weirdest stage in the game where you get to unlock an entirely new character you don't know anything about...
15:30 Hey, I recognize that voice, the science guy from Chasm: The Rift!
It took me till damn near the end of the video to realize they actually got THE AT THE TIME CURRENT VOICE OF SONIC, RYAN DRUMMOND in a game with a sonic clone that's too damn funny
that's nancy drew's va from the computer games omg !!!! queen lani!!!!
Wonderful Job my man!
This one seems to hit all the right notes and even though I have heard about it....
Thanks to you! I Now know about it!
Thanks for doing these reviews. I like hearing about the lower budget, more extreme games!
They help keep things interesting and as a Horror movie fan, for over 40 years, sometimes it's nice to know that there are still diamonds to be discovered :)
Cheers from Montreal Quebec Canada
I really love how the bat is all like
"Heyyyy, you're not Jimmy" attempts to disappear back into the bat while yelling Jimmy
“Here’s your favourite sexy doll” LOL
Also it's a tragedy nobody ever made some sort of AR game based on the horror monitor mechanic.
That one area in the game creeped me the fuck out. I think it was the factory with the conveyor belts all those corpses piled below were grotesque when you looked at them.
In glad this game is getting more attention. I love comedy horror
You can thank this game for being the reason Danganronpa Exists
Kazua Kodaka, Danganronpa’s creator said this inspired him to make games
Oh my god, this game gives "anime you found in a bargain bin that has 0 online presence" vibes.
I've watched this so many times while falling asleep that the trap sound feels comforting now
Great video, what a trippy game.
I rewatch Game Informer's Super Replay of it like every year lol
I somehow got a copy of the USA (just the disc, but still!) for like $40 on e-Bay a few years ago, which is.
If Crazy Games was able to continue they would have become a cult darling in the industry imo.
... the Internet Historian and Worm lived happily ever after.
I've watched a playthrough of this, not knowing what to expect - Oh man, what a ride that was!
you should cover fragile dreams on the wii. even with its anime like graphic it can be pretty scary because you can hear the enemies but not see them unless you iluminate them. that can be nerve wreaking special the first time you see the woman who open in half to show a row of teeth and eyes.
26:00 Rachel Horro movie is a huge reference/nod to the horror series Tremors.
i remember this game in a early 2000s game informer magazine. weirded me out but intrigued as a adolescent. the next page was capcom vs snk. both dreamcast games that was expanding my interest in gaming back in the day. anyways great video
That was an amazing experience. I cannot believe I've never once heard of this game.
Wonderful work Boulder Punch 😊❤
I had heard the name, but I had NO IDEA! This is awesome.
That voice actor at 17:40 something sounds *exactly* like the guy here on youtube doing the voice overs for the "SCP Explained - Story & Animation" videos. Great voice 😀
Super great friend’s legacy lives on
Love this one. Probably one of the few games I regret selling many years back when I sold off a lot of my stuff.
Currently playing through Illbleed and it can be super annoying with some sections like monsters getting cheap hits and shitty hitboxes but looking past those it’s an awesome game
GameCube's Eternal Darkness is one of the Best horror games I ever played.
Why does an EKG run through the four senses? It's like saying "Sight" is when you pump bloods from lungs to heart and smell is when you pump the oxygenated blood to your body,
54:03
The car on the right of the screen changes voice actor 3 times.
I’m kinda bummed you didn’t showcase Brainless Randy. Especially when you play him through the Killernan stage! It’s hilarious!
Damn i remember as a child shitting my pants watching my brother play this game on our dreamcast, thanks for the memories !
Man I can’t believe I was too scared to play this when I was a kid
I really hope you'll cover Song of Horror someday. Good job on this.
What a way to open a video! 😂
I love Illbleed! I love it so much that, no joke, I sometimes accidentally refer to Lani Minella as Eriko Christy. After hearing the tragic story of its creator, I hope his dream gets fulfilled one day by having this game get remade on multiple platforms.
I honestly thought this game was something I hallucinated seeing, but it does exist!
looooove this game, it took me YEARS to finally get my own copy
Took me a second to realize who the VA was for purple hair girl. Fucking LANI MINELLA xD She really was in just about everything back then. Will also forever be the only voice of Nancy Drew in the long time game series
Haven't played Illbleed but, from what you've shown, reminds me of Clocktower 3.
OSHA's worst nightmare.
I love everything about this, I gotta play it
0:25 in to the video and my face is: 😨😰. What am I getting myself into by watching this video.
I hope this kind of parody comes back around. I miss it so.
In fairness corky deserves a death sentence for killing those eggs. They seemed pretty cool.
The fact sexydoll never leaves that pose makes it all the funnier.
illbleed, my favorite game of my childhood
"or buying a copy for an inflated price"
That price isn't "inflated", which would imply anyone is artificially raising the price.
These voice actors made this game absolute comedy 😂😂😂😂😂
It's too bad we will never get an HD remaster of this game.
I've been waiting for you to play one of Dreamcast's bizarre survival horror game. It's incredible that both Blue Stinger and Illbleed are SEGA'S obscure games.
