I found the story about the boss and those ladies very interesting, and if I was in their position I probably wouldn't have said anything either to my boss

I find Gem’s advice highly relevant outside of Splatoon.
When Gem discussed the experience at Bravous, it brought to mind a book I had read for school a few years ago. It was Outliers by Malcom Gladwell, and in it he analyzed various plane crashes and their flight recorders. He explains how lower-ranked crew members did not communicate problems effectively to their higher-ranked pilot, and that them being more assertive could have prevented a crash. Piloting a plane has higher stakes than winning a game of Splatoon, but the elements for failure exist in both cases.
Teams of any kind must address what is preventing members from communicating what they think, because in cases such as the one above, it will come down to making everyone safer.

Trying to focus would definitely make a lot of people go quiet. Eventually, talking is just too much effort and ultimately a distraction, and hearing a bunch of voices in your ears is even worse after a bit. Splatoon is already a heavily stimulating game even before the voice chat is taken into consideration. The map should be used more if the voices peter out and every bit of the UI needs to be used and understood in their place, so there's _less_ reason to speak until you _need_ to convey what the game can't or doesn't.

this was incredibly important advice that i needed to hear, and know others need to as well. i run a D&D game, and that game doesn't exist if everyone isn't focused. every time someone goes on an off-topic tangent, browses tiktok on their phone or does anything to lose that focus - the game doesn't work anymore. when you lose focus, you lose chances of re-entering that focused state and it's especially hard to regain focus on a game that is entirely theatre of the mind.
this is of course just the way i formatted gem's advice to be relevant to me. it's incredibly useful to have access to advice like this in such an easily digestible way

I just joined a team and it’s super hard to keep up with callouts. I do get a little overwhelmed sometimes and go quiet. It’s not really because of tilt but i know it can quickly change the mood of the team

The way I see it, so long as you're involved in your trams comms and you're contributing what you can, you're good

especially if you just joined! as the captain of a team its so much better when people tell me their weaknesses straight up because then we can start working on them so everyone can improve together!

My favorite part about these videos is that it doesn't just apply to Splatoon. 90% of the advice he gives can be applied to other games in general, competitive or not.

Dude thanks for pointing some of these things out. Im in an intramural league with some friends, all of us are in it with the assumption we want to win but the things you mention happen. I appreciate the pointers a lot, ty.

Ahh yes I remember when my teammate just started yelling at me cuz I decided to go left in rainmaker and right as I decided to do that the teammate said go right and I died and kept reminding me of the mistake throughout the match which we still had 4 minutes though I could’ve switched I didn’t see any of the enemies going left so that’s why I went left. Never felt soo bad in my life and I’m like bruh you don’t have to keep on yelling at me and keep reminding me of my mistake lol I’m glad I left that team lol but I don’t have a team anymore. If anyone wants someone who had peak 2100 x power and peaked at top 2500 in tenetek region then I’m that person

I'm extremely grateful that me and my team are friends outside of the game and frequently play cooperative games outside of Splatoon. We joke around and call barking orders at each other in Plate Up "team building," but it really does feel nice to transfer the strategy and teamwork in that game into Splatoon and other games.

13th comment YAHOOO also this info really changed how I feel comms work. And though in game they seem limited, if you can use them correctly with this info it could be really useful!

I think focused works better instead of serious in terms of word choice. Light hearted is the opposite of serious, so you cannot really be both. But you can be focused and light hearted or focused and serious. You can also be serious and not focused. When you said what being serious was, you used focused, or synonyms for focused in your discussion.
