  • This is the second hutch built for the back-yard rabbitry. Its has 3 large bays (31in x 4ft) for female/doe rabbits and 1 (4ft x 4ft) for the weaned babies. A few tweaks were made since the last hutch build. The cross members no longer hold poop and has a better locking mechanism. You’ll even get to see some beautiful snow-white colored baby bunnies.

    I built a waste management system into my rabbit hutch using a waterproof tarp so I can keep it under a cemented patio cover that way the concrete won't get pooped on. I'm thinking of doing a video on the build. I designed it to be self-cleaning and looks kinda cool.

    I had the luck of finding this thick plastic liner that was used for transport to secure a load in a box trailer. I used it as a shoot (in an angle) that dumps into a 55 gallon drum I cut in half. I mix half sand half mulch in the drum and that helps with the stink.

    I’m so glad I found your rabbit hutch build video and thanks so much for this grow out update. I’m new to building large projects (just finished my chicken coop-it’s amazing in case you were wondering) and am excited to take on this hutch. The way you show/teach is ideal for me. Thanks a ton and stay awesome, dude! Your persona reminds me of a slightly dysfunctional Bob Ross 😆

    Planning on doing this build with a poop chute under that funnels into a bucket. Also on the edges where the poo collects thinking that a ripped edge in a triangle shape on top of that edge would help with that.

    Subbed! Do you grow out for meat or sale? I was going to grow for meat, but I've had to change that into a manure operation, but I'm curious if you do any thing to offset your feed cost?

    • @HalfAHandyman
      @HalfAHandyman  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for the sub. I sell them to cover the cost. In winter it's a little harder to move them though. Are you selling the manure?

    • @jaket8947
      @jaket8947 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@HalfAHandyman Yeah. The wife loves rabbits and couldn't let me go through with the meat side of it, but they have to help pay their way somehow. I have two super chill and nice Silver Fox and as soon as my new wire gets here I'll be building a new hutch that will help me harvest their manure more efficiently. I already have a ton of their manure in the garden beds for this year.

    • @HalfAHandyman
      @HalfAHandyman  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jaket8947 That's awesome. Im planning on building a raised bed and will be using it for that also. I though with all the bunnies I have, that there would be more manure, but I haven't gotten enough to do all the bald spots in my yard yet.

    • @jaket8947
      @jaket8947 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@HalfAHandyman What kind do you have? Smaller breed or just a lot of bald spots lol? I feel like my girls give me a lot but right now it's also mixed with hay when I'm moving it to the beds so it seems like more probably. My plan is to sell it both in solid and compost tea form and as soon as my comfrey gets large enough I'll start making that into a liquid fertilizer concentrate.

    • @HalfAHandyman
      @HalfAHandyman  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jaket8947 Not sure what age it's going to happen, but soon as i start balding ill be wearing hats in all the videos lol. That sounds like a good idea. Ive been wanting to try out those comfrey plants.

      Out of curiosity, do you know why this is better for rabbit feet than 1/2×1/2?

    • @HalfAHandyman
      @HalfAHandyman  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@johnfolk1448 i guess you could probably use it. The mesh i have allows the poop to fall through with no problems. Idk if the smaller mesh would clog or not. If you try it, id like to know.

    • @johnfolk1448
      @johnfolk1448 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'll probably go with the 1/2"×1" non vinyl. Seems lots of people use it, but my problem is I tend to over think things. So I see someone has the 1/2" hardware cloth and its hurting their rabbits feet, and I wonder if I should get vinyl. My big problem is I live in Hawaii so options are limited due to shipping. If I go with 1/2" vinyl, I'll be sure to share what happens.

    • @HalfAHandyman
      @HalfAHandyman  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@johnfolk1448 hardware cloth is thin. Not good for durability or the rabbits. 16 gauge is the minimum thickness i would go. That's what i have and no problems from the rabbits
