    A year after posting this video and it still helps tremendously. Using the BNSF ES44C4 official time table the current version of the game has one service going from Victorville to San Bernardino running 89 oil cars including four loco's in the front and two in the back at 12,369.4 t. My first attempt at the descent was catastrophic as I was trying to maintain speed around 30. I was chasing the speed and it finally went above 40mph and I couldn't control it. Using your methods I was able to complete the run successfully. Thanks

    I worked in the SB yard at a car hauler shop and yeah there were times the yard worker’s would come and warned us of trains. we had to evacuate because of rail cars leaking. Yeah the Cajon pass is no joke for those trains. Sometimes you could smell the hot brakes in the yard.

    I work for bnsf track maintenance and last year we were there working surfacing the track making the curves correct curvature and moving rock around to make the shape of the track. Our machines are 500,000 pounds and we only have independent brakes. Man it really needs more then independent the grade is to wild for our brakes. I was sweating the whole time we were working there lol😂

    The F7 was easier to get down the hill. I could max out the Dynamic Brake and just put the Automatic on whenever the train started going to fast. The Dynamic would not cut out when you apply the Automatic.

US labor relations may have been diverted from striking recently but the unrealistic attendance and ready report times of rail workers in US freight companies are terrible. Pretty sure what you're suppose to do is maintain. 30mph. Using 25 % min reduction on you auto break. And applying. Dynamic to keep you withing that 25-30mph range 😅 The effectiveness of standard dynamic braking begins to decrease at approximately 25 mph. At speeds below 25 mph the effectiveness of standard dynamic braking declines rapidly, but can be used at speeds as low as 13 mph. The slower you go the less effective dynamic breaking becomes .there is sweet spot the way you can tell you were going to slow is in notch 1 of dynamics you were not making any amps at all which is no good.,, no offense but you were at like not 70% auto notch 6 dynamics and was having trouble at 12mph you should be able to go down this hill easily at 25 mph notch 5 dynamic and 25% auto 70% is crazy

    If you do the minimum service early enough you can go down most of the grade with full dynamics and at most 10 lbs of air with a reduction of dynamics as the grade lessens up in certain spots. The only time the train runs away is if you're not paying attention and letting the speed build up too close to the speed limit.

    5:23 It depends on the weight and length of the train. If you are carrying Intermodal Freight with approx. 73cars and 7,000 tons of weight, you can go upto but not more than 25mph on minimial reduction automatic brake and adjusting dynamic brakes as necessary. Trust me, I did this route many times and it's not a bug.

    The rear locos do not apply the air brake through banking comm. They only copy the reverser, throttle and dynamic handles. You should be safe enough using the sawtooth method between 15mph and 23mph. You are following a fairly realistic method here.

    Many thanks for the tutorial on braking on the Cajon Pass. The only way I had been getting down either side of the pass with heavy trains was to apply all three brake types at 100% and when the train approached the speed limit, throw the automatic brake into emergency, come to a complete stop, wait for the brake pipe to repressurize and go through the whole process again a couple of miles further on! The key for me was your information that adjusting the automatic brake requires that the independent brake also be moved to "bail off" to keep the dynamic brake from cutting out. If that was in the training modules somewhere, I missed it! So much better now!

      I found with Auto brakes at around 25% I could maintain just under 30mph with Dynamic saw toothing a bit between 4 and 8. The main thing is to avoid the run away just after the rear of the train clears the summit. If you can avoid going over 35mph at that point the rest is fairly easy.

    Did you say you bail so your dynamic doesn’t kick out? You bail so your locomotive brakes don’t apply! So in real life you bail 3 seconds per each locomotive before applying the automatic! Rule of thumb is go into dynamic first then if you start to accelerate then put minimum service on which is 6 pounds and then watch your speed if it still continues to rise then go 10 pounds! Generally 10 pounds and good dynamic will get you everything you need! Your dynamic break is your first break you use before you ever touch your automatic

  • @fivepoint5sicks
    @fivepoint5sicks ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm pretty sure that dynamic brakes automatically cut off the moment you apply automatic or independent brakes. So so I don't believe dynamics do anything to help with braking once you apply the others.
