this set the record straight he just fell asleep at epsom pat just switched him off but made no mistake here el gran senior was great rainbow quest went on to win the arc with pat eddery legend

The Horse DID stay , got to the front too soon at Epsom with Pat showboating as was his wont at the time and it backfired , ridden for a turn of foot he was lethal and unbeatable that is indeed Rainbow Quest in second made to look one paced and he was a very very good horse himself very high class animal
There was also the fact at Epsom of a determined Christy Roche and a willing partner in Secreto, and the race was run in a relatively slow time of 2.39 so when Eddery asked his mount to quicken the response wasn't immediate but at the Curragh Pat was a bit more aggressive that bit earlier i.e . a furlong and a half out. Cockiness at Epsom was indeed was also a factor
@@liamg353 these days he would have been kept to a Mile and would have been in the Frankel class unbeatable over a mile , one of the greatest milers of all time his 2000 was the strongest one i can remember apart from Dancing Brave's and the Brig Beating Mill Reef , probably the Brig's 2000 jointly with the Senor
Mr Eddery, most certainly LEARNED a LESSON from Epsom Derby- This Time He came there and ASKED the horse to quicken this time rather than trying to win hard Held!!!
El Gran Senior was great. Eddery admitted that if Rainbow Quest had headed off at a good pace he might not have won here. RQ was very good. He should have gone to the Eclipse, Sussex .... He might not have got injured and the goat status was on the table.
Also worth noting how easily he was cruising into the straight until released over 1f out you just seldom see that in any Group One nevermind a Derby it just doesn't happen and simply cruising up to a horse like Rainbow Quest , simply outrageous
in fact this horse getting beat in the Derby probably led to Eddery's retainer being severed at the end of the following season, something else rather noteworthy, neither Eddery nor Cauthen look anywhere near dated in their respective riding styles both would not look out of place in 2021 that is why both were so successful in the 80's

Classy performance, and beating Subsequent Arc winner Rainbow Quest was no mean feat.

Such a shame this was his last race, would have loved to have seen him take on the older horses in the King George or International.

El Gran Senor was a world beater. His defeat in the Derby just showed how far ahead Lester was ahead of everyone else.
