Good question, I had to look it up. Turns out it was originally only a strike if you swung and missed, or you attempted to 'strike' at the ball and missed it. Back then the pitcher's job was basically to throw the ball where the batter told him to (and get out of the way). It would be a much different game.

Yes, you are correct. You can't strikeout on a foul ball, unless it has been bunted.
