I tried this on my 2013 Outback. I could not get the new struts in no matter how hard I tried. The strut was hanging at least an inch or more below the two holes on the arm. Looked pretty easy in the video.
@@johnbanket7000 not too bad. I was able to reuse them. It took a ton of leverage to get the bolt and the holes in the strut to line up that was the real issue I had.
I'm answering this because it happened to me. This is caused by the strut the other side 'holding up' the strut you're working on. Disconnect the front anti roll bar and it will let the hub you're working on drop down. Make sure you have a jack under the hub so you can adjust the height to get the bolts in.
Question for you - can the strut mounts be installed in any orientation or does the left need to mirror the right side? I noticed their are two bumps on the top of the casters and wasn't sure if those needed to be oriented in a specific way. Seems like you could orient each side in three different ways. Does that throw off your alignment to the point where your car could start pulling left or right at higher speeds? Appreciate the video!!
Thanks for the great information. I have to replace the SUSPENSION STRUT MOUNT. SUSPENSION TOP HAT (FRONT). Would you recommend replacing the whole strut? And if so, can you get the whole assembly OEM? Thanks! Again.
thanks for the vid! Going to be doing this tomorrow on my '08. It's an H6 but i'm pretty sure it'll be the same? Not sure if the struts are a bit different with the slightly heavier engine. Hey man, great video! Quick question: I changed all 4 struts on my subaru outback 2007 and for some reason the front ended up a bit higher than the back. Any idea of why that might be? I thought that maybe the dealer sold me the wrong rear strut or something. Thanks for your help!
@@MrSubaru1387 on the back I compressed the suspension with a jack first so I could put the axle through, and once the car was one the floor I tightened the strut mount bolts
@@MrSubaru1387 for the front, I left the strut hanging and then did the rest. And tightened the bolts once the car was on the ground. I also changed the strut mounts in the front, but I don’t think that would make it higher, right?
Great video. Concise, clear, to the point. Nice! General question: Do you consider age of the strut when replacing or simply if there is evidence of leaking? I have 2011 outback with original struts. No performance issues or leaking. 9 year old struts with 130k miles. Would you recommend replacing or waiting until there is clear evidence of failure?
Would you typically replace the spring as well or just the strut? What factors to consider. Also, did you do a video on rear shock replacement? I know you did some work on your brother's 2011 outback, but do not recall if you had performed that service. Thanks.
Is this process really this easy and straight forward? I ordered Monroe quick struts from Rockauto for the front of my 09 Legacy. Stock spring snapped in half (rusted straight through) so I just ordered the entire assembly. Hoping I can do this myself in an afternoon, I've only done brakes and fluid changes and basic things on my Subaru's. This doesn't look too complicated, like it more or less just bolts straight up.
Wish they would make a video like this when the bolts are rusted to hell. They make it look so easy on these videos when there is no rust to deal with.
For anyone still checking this video, I recommend not getting KYB struts, especially the KYB preassembled struts. I bought a KYB complete set for my 09 fxt and they ride very hard and the fxt hops over the smallest bumps. I've used kyb on my previous imprezas and maybe 15 years back they seemed ok, but I can't say the same for KYB now. I realize people will say kyb is the oem supplier, but something is wrong with their aftermarket parts. I bought the oem struts and springs complete set and hope to install everything soon. I work at a dealer and have driven many used subarus and none have ridden as poorly as mine with the KYB set. Just a heads up as it seems kyb is no longer good stuff.
Wondering what was the indication that they needed replacing, we have a 2004 Outback with 90,000 k's and she's making some clunking noises when reversing out the driveway or sometimes just taking off.
Would a 2016 subaru legacy be the same as in this video for the removal and replacement of struts? I have quick struts that I'm going to be replacing my old struts with, since this past winter destroyed my suspension here in Minnesota.
Thank yoiu question for you my son bought a 2006 Legacy Sedan and it needs new struts. What is the most affordable option that would recommend that is not an OEM part?
Another great video, thanks. Couple questions...why did you show both sides? They looked the same. Also, are all these Subarus your personal cars or customer’s? If yours what do you do with them after fixing them, drive or sell? I would assume you can’t drive them all!

@@MrSubaru1387 Well shoot, I better get er done then! Bought a parts Outback wagon with 150k miles, and I may have to snag the struts for my 305k daily driver, if it doesn't take all that long to swap out. Awesome! Thanks!!!
You're welcome. 👍🏻
Doesn't show swapping of the spring over to the new strut...?
This was replacing entire assembled struts. I have another video on the rear showing the disassembly of the struts.
Do you have the torque specs for the rear?
It's in the video for rear struts.
Me: Watches video for torque spec
Mr. SUBARU: impacts that B*TCH
Lol. Which bolt?
Geez only a quick strut, was hoping to see a real procedure, but fyi You don’t have to mark ANYTHING, the bolts have marks, the STRUTS have marks!!! It’s been a Subaru thing forever!
My 2010 outback calls for 88 lbs for the lug nuts.
Hi my friend, need to make you a question I recently bought a 2002 bugeye swapped to sti engine, And it comes with these shitty Ebay coil overs and I am thinking to make a replacement which some STI pink factory used struts but I am wondering if there are differences between the sedan and wagon models especially in the rear struts, they are 5x100’s, found on eBay complete JDM strut sets around $500 in good condition. Thanks for your answer.
+chrimay sedan and wagon sturts/springs are different. Use those that correspond to your vehicle.
MrSubaru1387 thanks a lot
+chrimay you're welcome. 👍
wheres the upper camber bolt?
nvm i got it
How do I switch to Outback struts on my 03 Legacy?
Start bolts with an impact! yeah! LOL
why dont u talk
What’s there to be said?
Good instructions but that's not new subaru strut hahaha it's old one
What happens if the rotor and knuckle won’t tilt back. I can get the bottom bolt but the top won’t get close enough.
Did your axle pull out of the front differential?
We don’t think we did but maybe. Someone said it looked like the hub was falling out a little. Would that cause it to not tilt back into place.
@@Br3ttBork3r it could.
