Thank you for this video - you have saved me a ton of time in figuring out how to get to the upper strut mounts! And I really appreciate that you put the torque specs in the video too!
Thank you for the video! Did mine today, easy enough steps provided, I just was dealing with rust and a lot of it (thanks New England!). 61k original miles, still took 1.5 hours to free, but she's done, and probably saved a few hundred dollars easily!
Subarus are so easy to work on. I'm doing this job this weekend on my car. I got a set of Monroe quick struts. It'll go quicker than mowing the lawn. Thanks for the video, pointers and torque specs.
@@anthonytanksley6470I’ve heard good things about the KYB Excel-G struts, that’s what I’m ordering soon. The complete rear strut and spring assembly is KYB SR4490 (for my 2005 anyway, I assume it’s the same for the whole generation). $86 each on Rock Auto.
I just used your video as a guide for replacing rear struts on my 2001 OBW. I had never “built” struts before, so this video was very helpful. Thanks again!
BTW whoever watching this and want to do on 2005-2009 Outbacks - KYB struts codes are 341443 for softer ride and 341276 (from 2002-2004 Outbacks) for more rigid. As said below - doing mine next week (341443 with Rallitek Springs on back and KYB 734034/5 AGX with 20330AG13A springs on front)
Great choice with the KYB's. Installed KYB's on my SUS, the ride is much better than even brand new OEM struts. They are slightly firmer, maybe 20-25%, but gives it a sportier feel. I would not cheap out anywhere on struts, springs, or mounts. I have seen struts punch through the mount and into the steel plate on top on brand new aftermarket mounts.
I know this is 6 years oldbut wanted to say thanks its very helpful. Im glad its a much easier job than the front suspension 😂. That needer new struts, control arms and brakes. But very worth it.
Couldn't agree more! Just did my 2005 legacy wagon's rear strut. This video was crucial, but it still took 1.5 hours to break free the rusted bolt with an air tool, heat, and penetrating oil! Good ol' new England! And to think, it only has 61k original miles!
If anyone has to use an angle grinder to cut through the lower nut because it's frozen solid, be very careful not to slip as the park brake cable is right above it. Thankfully it wasn't the cutting wheel that hit it. Cleaning the surface of rust where the bolt goes in with the wire wheel and slipped and hit the cable but only nicked the outer layers.
Awesome video thank you! Really helped when you showed putting the strut together too. I have a 2003 outback and am looking to replace rear (and possibly front as well) struts with excel--G shocks and Rallitek coils. Rallitek has option of 0.4" lift rear and 0.0" lift front or 1" lift rear and front. I'm considering the 1" lift struts for the added clearance. And I'm wondering if you have any recommendation about stock-ish height vs. 1" lift on the outback? Thanks for any insight!
If anyone wants to stiffen their rear (my is sagging a lot with all instruments in the trunk) I read people recommend King (20-30% stiffer) or Rallitek (10-20% stiffer) springs. I will do mine once it gets warmer (May). Will put 0.5" spacer as well
It feels like that top nut should either be flanged or have a washer, but my new shocks are the same as these. Seems like not much metal is holding all that tension. The nuts on the front struts are flanged, why not these ones?
One thing I have noticed in my Haynes manual is that for the 2005 and 2006 models, it lists the torque spec for that bottom bolt at 160Nm, and the 2007-2009 models it lists it at 62 Nm. Do you know why there would be such a huge difference? It says the same thing in the FSM.
Hello Mr. Subaru - Can you Please tell me if all the Parts you used are from the Subaru catalog? I have a 2006 Subaru Legacy Wagon and all the struts seems to be Bottoming out on the frame! I bought all new Subaru OEM parts for my 2004 Outback rear struts and paid a shop to compress the new springs and assemble the components. I brought it home only to find that they have installed the bump stop upside down on one of the struts. Not happy. Should I have them take the assembly apart and install the bump stop correctly? I noticed lots of scratches on the new spring, suggesting they do not have a mounted compressor.

My car is 2004 Forester w 365k on it... Still going well but wearing out.... Worth returning and getting better quality? Or are these ok for 50k ?? I'd appreciate your opinion . Cheers
That may be for the moving parts like links, arms, ... it should be actually better for the lower mount to tighten unloaded, but I would check again the upper one after lowering the vehicle.
Great video! Thanks! I have a 2003 Legacy Limited Wagon that needs new struts. I was thinking I might like a little more rear end lift. Would 2003 Outback struts fit and would I need any other parts? Thanks!
Outback and Legacy parts are interchangeable. The rear Outback springs may give you a little more height. Outback uses subframe spacers to add more height over the Legacy. Not sure how much of the height is in the spring and how much is in the subframe spacers.

how to install front shock 2016
Does anyone know of a stronger rear spring strut set up?
I have a buddy who uses his wagon like a contractor van. She's loaded all the time
Quick question. I've heard various different things about whether or not you need an alignment after replacing rear struts. I know it's a bit trickier than the front, by nature. What's your take on the matter?
+Ya Boi Kaeman basically need a realign after any major suspension work.
Hi Mr Subaru, I get it's out of your videos Thanks!! I was watching this after I bought some rear struts ... Turns out I bought the exact ones you said to AVOID!! My car is 2004 Forester w 365k on it... Still going well but wearing out.... Worth returning and getting better quality? Or are these ok for 50k ?? I'd appreciate your opinion . Cheers
Personally, I'd return them.
@@MrSubaru1387 Thanks!! I returned. It's been a great car and I don't want to put crap on it now 👍
How did you torque the nut on top of the shock holding the strut mount?
You can't put a socket on it as the hex part inside will turn.
He used an Allen wrench.
Thought you have to put weight on suspension before fully tightening
That may be for the moving parts like links, arms, ... it should be actually better for the lower mount to tighten unloaded, but I would check again the upper one after lowering the vehicle.
Yes and no. Usually only put the vehicle weight on the suspension when torquing control arm fasteners.
When I put my new strut assembly in it didn’t line up to the suspension, it’s like 2 inches too low. any tricks to get them to line up
Jack it up.
@@MrSubaru1387 Thank you very much! Much appreciated.
You're welcome. 👍🏻
Did rear struts on 06 legacy, used Monroe setup. Any idea why car is now sitting at different ride heights in the rear?
is it lower in the rear?
Is there a particular kind of jack stand you recommend so as to not damage the pinch weld?
Adam McGrath the ones I have have a groove in the center of them for the pinch weld to sit inside.
Can you do a video on how to remove the weather strips on the body not on the door itself pls.. thank u
They just pull off. Pry a little and pull
Why can’t you love videos on TH-cam?
What happens if you just impact the big nut down on the top hat with out the Allen key? That’s what I saw my mechanic friend do and it’s got me a little concerned
it will spin and the incorrect torque might make it too tight or too loose making nosies
