One of the most underrated parts of this film was the way they did the Basilisk (the big snake). They used Jurassic Park's method of using life size puppets in the close up shots and CG for everything else, making the whole thing that much more convincing.
Castleman Reviews He keeps referring to the subsequent movies/books as sequels. But to me, "sequel" implies like a continuation that wasn't necessarily planned out at first. But literally every part of the HP series was planned out in its entirety from the get go. She knew how everything was going to work out before she even started writing.
True, nothing is perfect. But the first concept of a Horcrux was right there in the second book, the dairy. Tom Riddle's concisous inside of it. A piece of his soul. She definitely knew what she was going to do with the horcruxes from the start. She didn't just throw that concept in later down the track.
Bose-Einstein It's been confirmed in the past. Rowling may not have had everything perfectly planned out, but she had a layout of the major plot points from the beginning. So maybe she hadn't settled on the concept of the "horcrux" yet, but she knew always knew what the diary's significance would be.
She spent years planning out the plots and major beats for all seven books. So yes, she did know all along. Not to mention that it's clearly hinted at in Dumbledore's office at the end of the book.
I personally found this one the scariest of them all. Not darkest, but scariest. The fact that there is 'something' on the loose and no one knows what it is or how to stop it, plus all the whispering Harry hears... Legit horror.
I never knew it was underrated honestly. the second and first were some of my favorites as the following movies seemed to focus too much on teen drama.
Personally, I thought Chamber Of Secrets was better than Sorcerer's Stone. COS had more going on, of course, I'd still say, just read the books over watching the movies.
Um, really? I never really heard anyone talking about this being the one film the fans hate. Usually when I ask someone which Harry Potter movie is the weakest and/or hated, it's either Order of the Phoenix, Half-Blood Prince or Deathly Hallows Part 1.
Actually a huge disappointment, the score for those movies are mediocre. If there is one thing I am unimpressed with Marvel movies, its it's original music. Hopefully future MCU movies will get a better and more memorable theme and music in the future. I don't expect some legendary 10/10 Star Wars type music, but at least not bland AF like the Avengers movies.
Great review. I think JK did know the diary was a Horcrux in book 2 though as there are signs of the Horcrux concept as early as the conversation between Harry and Dumbledore after the confrontation with the Basilisk in Dumbledore's office. He says that Voldemort put "a bit of himself" and transferred some of his powers to Harry on the night of his parent's murder.
actually Jason Issac said at his panel at salt lake comic con "I was asked to do a spell and I didn't know one so I asked the food guy what's a Harry Potter spell and he told me 'avada kadevra' so I used it and the director told me I almost killed him." still funny though
This will always be my favorite. It stays to the book and improves when necessary. It strikes the perfect line between fun and magical and dark and serious. Honestly, I'll take the extra runtime to flesh out the world.
please. please. Pleeese review it, you have until Halloween. Seriously WTF dude, it's 8 episodes, review it. (Fast forward to Halloween) TH-cam Comment: Hey Jeremy, pls review season 2. YT Comment 2: He has yet to review season 1! Me: still the only person who I have no clue on what they thought of the show. Wonder watch it will take... JK Rowling worked on the entire story for five years before writing the first book, she was aware of the horcruxes. Chamber of Secrets used to have a lot more elements of the Half Blood Prince in it (introducing horcruxes and explaining Voldemort's powers) but she thought it'd be too early to reveal such important information. It was thought out.
Actually the diary was always a horcrux, it's heavily foreshadowed in the book. Now the word horcrus may not have been thought of until later, but the diary was always one of them.
I hope Jeremy talks about the first scene in Prisoner of Azkaban where Harry uses the Luninus Maximus spell and how the sound affect of the speed went so well with the John Williams theme
In my opinion this movie is underrated its my third and people said it was the worst. To be honest the book gets listed as the worst out of all the books and its my second favorite book. I think it is so underrated because its amazing.
I'm loving these Harry Potter reviews! It feels refreshing to see reviews like this without a special occasion (though really it's for Jeremy to refresh his memory). As much as I like what Chris Stuckmann does from time to time, there are times when I just feel like I want to see a review of something from a long while back, without seeing it coming, and just enjoy it from a point-of-view that I'm curious to hear.
Actually JK Rowling DID know that the diary was going to be a horcrux, she spent years planning out all the major beats of the entire story. Also it's hinted at in Dumbledore's office at the end of the book.
Honestly, of all the movies, this one is my favourite. The Chamber of Secrets stepped up the Harry Potter lore in so many ways and provided a very fascinating Agatha Christie mystery tale woven into the plot on top of that. Not only do we see more magic, but also more creatures, more of Hogwarts, the action is more intense, the stakes are higher, and the actor they got to play Tom Riddle was awesome. The Basilisk fight was also super cool. Favourite parts though were definitely Harry and Ron's flight to Hogwarts and nearly getting hit by the train, crashing into the Whomping Willow, and Ron performing subpar magic with his broken wand and making himself spit up slugs.
creepybeaver3981 no she wrote each book individually. She never knew where she was going. That's why there are plot holes with tri-wizard tournament which was never mentioned before. it's like Olympics and no one knows about it. The time turner they use it in book 3 and bam it's never seen again. She didn't even know the books would be published. She didn't plan it.
The main thing I love from HP2 that is not mentionned in this review is the brilliant performance from Kenneth Branaugh as Gilderoy Lockheart. It doesn't matter how many times I've seen this film, he always manages to get a chuckle out of me.
I remember I lucked into the Potter universe. Can't even remember how old I was, but my mom's cousin-in-law(if there is such a thing) bought me Sorcerer's Stone for xmas that year, and by new years I had finished it. It was in english, which is only my 2nd language, and I was at an age where I could read and understand it, albeit slowly. There were 3 books released at the time, 4th was announced, and she bought it to me as she had heard great reviews and was convinced it was both an engaging book, and a chance for me to develop my english. She was right on both accounts. I had never been that engaged in a book, ever. I can't remember my exact emotions around this time, but I know for a fact I've never been this happy being engaged in a world that didn't exist. I also remember I was devastated none of my classmates had read the book(only one existed in a translated form at the time) or cared much about Potter in general. I had so much to talk about, but no-one to talk to.. This was also before internet became a household thing. My dad had it on his work computer, that I was allowed 1 hour on every day. But dial-up made surfing something out of my hands :p When eventually the movies were announced and released, I was like "FINALLY, my friends will understand". Until they didn't Most watched it, few liked it, but no-one cared enough to try and read the books. "Why read a book when you can just wait for the movies?" Bah, unimaginative primals :@
This one is my personal favorite. Dives deeper into the lore, introduces an intriguing mystery for the main characters to solve, and Harry uses a sword. What more do you need?
Actually, Rowling did think of the Horcruxes at the time of writing them. Her notes reveal that the second book would introduce the concept, and the chamber of secrets was originally going to be the plotline of the sixth book, probably using the diary as a way to explore voldemort's past, instead of the pensieve. Rowling decided against it because it would make it very obvious that Voldemort would return at some point, and because it would kill the mystery to soon, I guess. But she knew the diary was a horcrux, which is why she had it destroyed with the venomous basilisk fang, and not with magic or with the sword. :)
I remember my teacher in 6th grade read the book to us, and when the reveal of Tom riddle came up, she wrote it all out on the board, and we all gasped!
Are you serious?! I'll bet you any amount of money you like that J.K Rowling definitely knew where she was going with the diary. She'd previously considered putting part of the plot of "Half Blood Prince" into "Chamber of Secrets", but decided to put it in Book 6 because it didn't work in Book 2. (Although full disclosure: it was the "Prince" part she was considering) Do you also think that she didn't know Harry was a Parselmouth when she wrote Book 1? I remember reading Chamber of Secrets when it turned out it was a rare ability and realising that "The Vanishing Glass" incident - which you'd think is just an isolated magical moment when reading Book 1 - is actually a set-up/foreshadow of a pretty important theme throughout the series. I'm not saying J.K Rowling is flawless, but give her credit where credit is due. She plans ahead and you did her a major dis-service here. I'd appreciate it if you'd be big enough to correct your mistake in your next Harry Potter review.
Wow, like...you can say he's wrong, and I might even agree with you. Don't know enough to agree with either side really, but to be like "I want a correction from you" is just....pretty dumb. Don't really know if there is a 100% way to know if she did or not...and yes, I'm sure if someone ASKED her today, she'd say, yes of course...but no one really knows if that'd be the truth. Point is, don't be such a fan, that you expect "corrections" in people's work, for stuff you can't really prove. Even if you can, what he said was such a small part of the video, to ask for a correction in it...again, its a crossed line.
My source? JK Rowling. Exact links will take me some time because I've absorbed quite a bit of info about the series and how she wrote it from documentaries and interviews etc and I'll have to remember which bits I got from where. I'm pretty sure there's a clip on TH-cam where she talks about how she feels a "writer should know everything" about the world they're writing about. For those who have read the books, not just watched the films, there are plenty moments where you can tell she knew the whole story before she published Philosopher's Stone. I did not say, quote, "I want a correction from you". I said I'd appreciate it from JJ if he did - because I have faith that he might be reasonable enough to do that. Not all TH-camrs would. He didn't frame what he said as an OPINION - he just straight up accused her of not planning ahead like he knew best. I mean, you ask for my evidence; where's his?! Do not see me as some blinkered fan. I disagree with JK Rowling on a number of issues - mainly political, but also literary - and I'm willing to criticise her where it is due. But I also give her credit where credit is due, and she's a highly skilled author - someone I, as a budding author myself, take inspiration from. Last point: I personally don't feel it is dumb or crossing a line to suggest correcting something you've publicly stated. It might seem "a small part of the video" to you, but I believe my OP covered this when I said he did her a major dis-service. JJ has a subscriber base of over a million and this video currently has 114000+ views. You'd think with that kind of influence he'd take the time to fact-check what he's saying first. I'm sorry if you don't think that borderline slander is a big deal. To be honest, an annotation on this video would do; I didn't think of that earlier.
She definitely had it planned out. The foreshadowing was heavy in the books, and she's even said before HBP came out that plots from CoS were cut out and revisited in book 6. That was the cut out plot.
In the book, it doesn't specify what spell Lucius was going to use. Avada Kadavra was the only spell that Jason Isaacs could remember, that's why in the movie he used it. Just wanted to clear that up.
I'm just gonna throw in my two cents on the whole "did JK plan for the diary to be a horcux since the beginning or was it retconed to be a horcrux later thing". I definitely think she knew what she was doing. Many people have brought up some good points on both sides, but the clincher for me is Harry himself. Forget book 2 having a horcrux... we find out at the end that we see a horcrux in book one. Harry himself. From the literal beginning of the first book all the years ago Rowling gave Harry the ability to talk to snakes and an undeniable connection with Voldemort. You telling me there was no larger plan behind that and years and years later she said oh yeah i guess that was cuz he was a horcrux or whatever.
In the books and movies (library scene), it says basilisks are scared of Chickens. Instead of a sword fight with a giant snake, they could have brought a chicken or at the very least Ron.
My favourite movie in the series. I loved the way they made the school this magical, mysterious place, with a dark history, and tons of secrets. I love the way the school is portrayed in the first two movies. Also, the basilisk was really cool, and I liked the Tom Riddle story.
Tom Felton forgot his line when Draco sees Harry disguised as Goyle, so he improvised "I didn't know you could read". Shirley Henderson (Moaning Myrtle) is the oldest actress (age thirty-seven) to portray a Hogwarts student. Although based on the second shortest book, this is the longest of the movies. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007), which is based on the longest book, is the second shortest of the movies. Robbie Coltrane had to turn down a part on The West Wing (1999) to reprise his role as Hagrid. Daniel Radcliffe has said that "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" is his favorite book. The only Harry Potter movie to have a post-credit scene J.K. Rowling actually created a guide to teach the cast members how to speak Parseltongue. One of two Harry Potter movies not to be nominated for an Academy Award, the other being Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007). Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001) and this movie are Chris Columbus' two biggest financial hits. Lucius Malfoy slaps Draco's hand with his cane. Jason Isaacs didn't know there were small fangs on the top, so Tom Felton's pain was real In the novel Aragog is blind, as his eyes were milky white. In this movie, his eyes are black, implying he can see. This is Toby Jones' first voice-over movie. His next one was Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 (2010). Jason Isaacs provided the voice of the basilisk calling to its victims. Chris Columbus thought Isaacs was so good at doing voice-over work, he asked him to create a creepy sounding voice for the basilisk, considering the book only describes it as a hissing sound. (at around 16 mins) When Harry leaves Borgin & Burks a witch walks by the alley close to him, smiling in a creepy way. This witch is played, uncredited, by Pamela Kempthorne. Harry's Arania Exumai spell, which Harry learned from Tom's diary and used against the attacking spiders, was not in the book. During post-production, producer David Heyman went to visit Richard Harris in the hospital. Though he was very weak from his illness, Harris insisted that the role of Dumbledore not be re-cast. Sadly, Harris died shortly before production was to begin on the next movie, necessitating a re-cast. It was Jason Isaacs' idea for Lucius Malfoy to have long, blond hair, as well as carry a walking stick inside of which he would conceal his wand. He grew attached to the stick, and once tried to take it off set before he was caught. (at around 15 mins) The opal necklace, which plays an important role in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009), can briefly be glimpsed inside a display case in Borgin and Burkes' shop in Knockturn Alley when Harry first enters. In the UK this became the first movie to achieve a million DVD sales in its first weekend.
The scene of jason isaacs trying to kill harry was one of the first scenes they filmed and hed been reading goblet of fire at that time. In the book no words are said he can just tell hes about to curse him and avada kedavra was just the first spell that came to mind for isaacs so thats why he says it in that scene.
If my memory serves me correct the Avada thing with Lucius wasn't in the book. It is a fun way of foreshadowing for the audience that is caught up with the books, but on later thoght makes no sense.
Hey, @JeremyJahns, I dunno if anyone has already mentioned this in the comments. But back then...like 10 to 12 years back...there was a webpage for Tom Riddle's diary. I used to spend ages on it...oh, youth.
I've scrolled back Jeremy's list of uploads to see when was the last time he has cleanly shaven his beard off based on the thumbnails for his reviews, and my gosh it has been years...
Really enjoying this series of reviews! I can't wait for your take on Prisoner of Azkaban - it's my favourite of the movies, and I'm excited to hear what you have to say about Cuarón's direction. If you end up reading this comment, I'm just curious - were you ever a Twin Peaks fan? If you are I'd love a video on the original series or what you think about the new series!
Apparently Jason Isaacs forgot the curse he was supposed to say in that scene and just said the first one that came to mind. He also improvised kicking Dobby down the stairs in the prior scene.
This is honestly my favorite out of the films as this is where I officially became a fan of the series and I feel this one translated the book the best.
My favorite moment in the series is Harry saying, "Don't worry. I will be." Learning the story of that being a 'made up on the spot' line based off of Jason Isaacs thinking the scene needed to be longer, blew my mind when I first heard it.
When I was a kid, I loved the second one more than the first because I loved the mystery aspect with the Chamber of Secrets and the world building involving the founding of Hogwarts (which btw, would make an awesome prequel story, why couldn't Rowling make a Founders trilogy instead of 5 Fantastic Beasts movies?)
Last April I met the actor who played Lucius Malfoy, Jason Isaacs. He was very nice and cool to talk to. I even got the privilege to get a photo taken with him
Will you, please, review the Pirates of the Caribbean 5? It opens tomorrow in my country and I'm waiting for your review to decide should I spend money on Imax or no...
I'm excited for your review of Prisoner Of Azkaban, please feel free to go as in depth as possible. I wanna know what you think about every aspect of the film possible!
Wasn't this the only film in the franchise to get an extended cut? Did anyone ever find/watch that? It's weird that this would get an extended cut considering the length of it already.
I'm so happy to listen to a good review of this one, it has always been my favorite!! :) But lately I've been hearing and reading that people like this one the least, and I don't get why...
This one is most likely my favourite, between my favourites like this, the first one, Goblet of Fire and maybe Order of the Phenoix, I just really bloody like it
For me as a child what really put this movie to a whole new height was the INCREDIBLE set of the chamber itself and the fight against the Basilisk that really makes this movie feel so much bigger than the first one.
Being a huge Potter fan I don't think COS was too long. I felt it covered all the key elements from the book, from the important to the silly ones. That's why this one is one of my favorites from the series, I think it was a really good adaption from the book.
What I liked about that "avada...." was so intense, and you knew it was bad, but you don't know how bad until the fourth one. They don't mention the unforgivable curses until then, and I remember wondering what that spell was about
I loved Harry Potter & the Chamber of Secrets as a Kid and to this day it's still my favourite film of the Harry Potter franchise. Maybe I like so much because there are snakes in this movie and I'm afraid of snakes(the Basilisk's voice scared me as a kid)? or the fact we got to know a bit more of the history of Hogwarts and our first look into the racism in the wizarding world? or the general mystery of the heir of Slytherin?
Two goof ups I want to bring up. 1. Draco's scene in the library was clearly shot later in production. Because Tom Felton's voice dropped at the start of the movie, and every other scene after that, he had his younger voice. 2. Because of a goof up in score recordings. They accidentally played an Attack of the Clones track during the quidditch match.
Is it weird: we've all seen the film, yet we come to watch a review made years later because Jeremy is fricken awesome!
SmasherBoy that's only because Jeremy Jahns is Awesometacular! 'Heres cheers in the background.'

Actually, NO. JK knew what the diary was from the start. If you re read the books, you can really tell who well orchestrated this entire series is.
not saying its without plot flaws but she knew where she was going.

Highly doubtful.

The best Harry Potter film, I actually like it more than the book.

Because it's J K Rowling, I'm fairly certain she already knew back then that the diary would be a Horcrux.
Movie Reedviews I'm not sure she knew the complete logistics of it, but she definitely set it up as being something that would be important later.
She spent years planning out the plots for all seven books, there is no way in hell she didn't know exactly what the diary was.
creepybeaver3981 no she wrote each book individually. She never knew where she was going. That's why there are plot holes with tri-wizard tournament which was never mentioned before. it's like Olympics and no one knows about it. The time turner they use it in book 3 and bam it's never seen again.
She didn't even know the books would be published. She didn't plan it.
arnold arun she wrote the last chapter of the last book before the first book got published, so yes she knew where she was going.
The time turners weren't used again due to issues with time travel.
What's really interesting is that the spell Avada Kedravra' was not known yet as Goblet of Fire (the book) was not yet release back then.
Rumor suggests Jeremy has invited Hermione to his "chamber of secrets" where he's given himself full permission to "slytherin"....
The main thing I love from HP2 that is not mentionned in this review is the brilliant performance from Kenneth Branaugh as Gilderoy Lockheart. It doesn't matter how many times I've seen this film, he always manages to get a chuckle out of me.
Who played the ps2 game?!?!
But dial-up made surfing something out of my hands :p
When eventually the movies were announced and released, I was like "FINALLY, my friends will understand". Until they didn't Most watched it, few liked it, but no-one cared enough to try and read the books. "Why read a book when you can just wait for the movies?" Bah, unimaginative primals :@
I think chamber of secrets is better than the first one.
gursimar singh fuck no!...Gets close though.
Nick Feizabal I think the ending in chamber of secrets is much better than the first one.
Can't wait to see all the fan-girls going nuts at Jeremy's mispronunciation of the killing curse
Dirvinator i have yet to see one lol
*THE VIDEO CAME OUT EXACTLY A YEAR AGO*
No views. Yup I'm that early.
Team T fake news
That tom riddle app you were looking for, it's called SIRI. And why i don't use an iPhone.
Your a harry wizard
Taylor Conroy why you gotta butcher his line like that😂
No mention of the Basilisk and how good it looks for a 2002 film?
Realister MicLoud Your sources for this?
Deathly hallows part 2 is the best of the franchise. Anyone else agrees?
The Secret Life of Pets is the best movie to ever exist.
tuber324 You're on drugs
Tom Riddle's dairy is just a magic book version of Google Assistant/Siri
In the books and movies (library scene), it says basilisks are scared of Chickens. Instead of a sword fight with a giant snake, they could have brought a chicken or at the very least Ron.
Chamber of Secrets is actually my favourite of the franchise. Followed closely by Deathly Hallows Part 2.
It was good as it added a dark undertone to the world which geared you up for what's coming.
My favourite movie in the series. I loved the way they made the school this magical, mysterious place, with a dark history, and tons of secrets. I love the way the school is portrayed in the first two movies. Also, the basilisk was really cool, and I liked the Tom Riddle story.
The dairy was well thought out in my opinion. Cause at the end they use a basilisk fang to kill a horcrux. And the sword of Gryffindor too.
The only Harry Potter movie to have a post-credit scene
Jason Isaacs didn't know there were small fangs on the top, so Tom Felton's pain was real
In the novel Aragog is blind, as his eyes were milky white.
Jason Isaacs has said that he totally improvised the "Avada" line, not knowing that it was actually the first half of the killing curse.
Hey, @JeremyJahns, I dunno if anyone has already mentioned this in the comments. But back then...like 10 to 12 years back...there was a webpage for Tom Riddle's diary. I used to spend ages on it...oh, youth.
CoS is my favorite movie in the entire series and my favorite book (up there with the Deathly Hallows book.)
Malfoy's dad wasn't about to say Avada Kadavara, it sounded like it, but it was some other spell.
Apparently Jason Isaacs forgot the curse he was supposed to say in that scene and just said the first one that came to mind. He also improvised kicking Dobby down the stairs in the prior scene.
What I don't get is the underuse of the teleport and the fact that every year something or the other happens in the school
I usually refer Jason Isaacs as Lucius Malfoy and Lucifel from the underrated PS3/Xbox 360 game El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron.
I love how before you started doing these reviews I had just recently bought and watched all of the Harry Potter movies on blu ray.
This is honestly my favorite out of the films as this is where I officially became a fan of the series and I feel this one translated the book the best.
Being a person who loves the books I felt like this one is the BEST execution of bringing the book to life in the entire series.
James Lawner the world will never know.
James Lawner They'll probably do that story once Beasts is finished. Lol
How did you not mention Gilderoy Lockhart!?!
I am so stoked you are reviewing all of these!!!!!
It's honestly my favorite of the series. Gives me a lot of childhood memories.
Up at 1:40 in the morning.
Just for Jeremy.
In the books the curse Lucius was going to cast on Harry is not specified but presumably was NOT Avada Kedavra.
I love that you added the Lucius/Avada point. That was always a "what?" moment for me when watching.
All these reviews are just making me want to rewatch all of them too
I loved it but the Sorcerer's Stone will always be my favorite. It was also the last HP film with Richard Harris as Albus Dumbledor.
This one is most likely my favourite, between my favourites like this, the first one, Goblet of Fire and maybe Order of the Phenoix, I just really bloody like it
im watching this movies along with you jermy! every time i see one of your reviews come out for harry potter, i watch that movie.
I've seen all the Harry Potters countless times and never realized Lucius was trying to use the killing curse on Harry in that hallway.
No mention of Branagh's character?
Siri is basically a Tom Riddle Diary... haha
Goodness Jeremy! Not all of us live on the west coast.
