    Not sure if it's considered an easter egg....but one of the best moments for me in this film was re-watching it after learning about the "unforgivable curses" and noticing that Lucius was going to kill Harry at the end but Dobby saves him. He says with anger, but almost under his breath, "avada--". Whew...epic.

    • @Dylan8888888888
      @Dylan8888888888 8 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      Well technically it is an Easter Egg. The Unforgivable Curses were only introduced to us the audience in The Goblet of Fire. We had been shown Avada Kedavra curse in the flash back of Lily Potters death, but were never shown/heard what the curse was called. So when Lucius Malfoy said Avada, when the film was released it was an Easter Egg of sorts as at the time it was not known that Avada, or Avada Kedavra, was a killing curse or an Unforgivable Curse.
      This is unless you had read the book, as The Goblet of Fire was published in 2000, so you would know about it then... Either way, to my recollection it was not included in the book, so I think I would count it as an Easter Egg in the film.

      +Markersable However, you understand his motives a bit more in Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince. He's extremely flawed largely due to wanting to fulfil his father's expectations and the doctrines he was raised with. He gets his redemption in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child - you sympathize with him. His kid is absolutely the most precious cinnamon roll ever. However, he still has his sass and coldness (he is a Malfoy after all but with a tad more heart and appreciation for others)

    8 words:
    The most underrated Harry Potter movie by far.
    People complain about this movie being long. Ahem, Goblet of Fire is only 4 minutes shorter, Endgame is 3 hours and all 3 LOTR movies are 3 hours long at the least.

    • @calebstevens9446
      @calebstevens9446 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Goblet of fire was action packed though, very tense and we really aren’t in Hogwarts as much as the first two and most of time spent there was during the ball which I’d say was a better set piece than most of chamber of secrets’s which just spends time where we spent time in the 1st.

    • @joeyjerry1586
      @joeyjerry1586 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@calebstevens9446, most of GoF takes place in Hogwarts though. The yule ball sequence is only 10 minutes long approximately. I get what you’re saying though due to the unique nature of the tasks but even then the entirety of the climax of CoS takes place in the chamber

    • @calebstevens9446
      @calebstevens9446 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@joeyjerry1586 just like the climax of GoF being the maze then the Voldemort fight, I like both climax’s though and even though GoF is the least respective of the books, the movie never really felt bogged down in some acts compared to the CoS

      I myself like the first two movies of this series the best. There's just something about how they feel, they feel magical.
      I don't really like how the main cast mostly uses muggle clothes in the next film.
      I do like David Yates's style for the movies he directed, but I think he left out a lot of important things which makes me dislike his movies, even the Deathly Hallow part 2.

      +JAL90 Everything you said I agree with! It bugged me so bad that in Order of the Phoenix they never explained it was Umbridge that made the Dementors attack Harry. Not to mention he's holding Sirius' mirror at the beginning of DH2 and it never explained how he got it. Or how he knew where the diadem was in the room of requirement. I could go on and on but you get the picture. Chris always says he's ok with adapting the source material if it doesn't take away from the story but I feel like Yate's movies omissions hurt the story or at the very least left many moments unexplained

    One thing I wish Chris mentioned was the ending with Hagrid returning back from Azkaban. In my opinion, that is one of the most heartfelt moments for any movie character and Robbie Coltrane as Hagrid is fantastic. He’s a phenomenal actor and him having tears in his eyes as well as Emma Watson when everyone is applauding him, it’s just so beautiful and I recently watched The Chamber of Secrets on HBO Max and I definitely teared up.

      Yeah, but this also have to do with the source material. In both of them Harry have to find about a secret hidden in Hogwarts to save the school, in both he end facing some manifestation of voldemort (Not the complete one) and in both of them there is a giant monster. Even more, in both of them there is some expedition to the dark forest. That's why a lot of people love the third one, it's actually really different.

    This is actually my favourite Harry Potter film, mostly for nostalgic reasons. It was on all the time in my house when I was a kid, it was definitely one of my favourite films growing up, and I still love it today! Regarding the Basilisk sequence: That Basilisk animatronic is one of the best practical effects I've ever seen in a film. They so easily could have made the whole sequence using CGI but thankfully they didn't, because it's helped this film age so damn well. I still get tense when Harry is cornered in the sewer... Great review, Chris! Keep it up, you're the best critic on TH-cam :)

    In the film, I think Lucius was going to perform the killing curse, because he starts to say it before Dobby prevents him from doing so. The movies hadn't explained what any of those curses were yet, so in retrospect you can tell what could have been the case if you put it in the wider context of what the films, and indeed the books explain to us.

    "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" is another great follow-up from the first and my third best film of the "Harry Potter series. The film is more like the same repeat like the first one, but I found very enjoyable and it was a kid-friendly adventure that the studio went on doing it since the first one was success and this one have updated better. I really like the story where our hero went the second year at Hogwarts and he discovers that the hidden chamber was indeed open by a unknown voices. The characters were great once again including these three young portrayals were so good and they're becoming more mature than the last one and I wish I can more of them. They spend talking, they discussing about their clues, and they're so much memorable that I laugh with these one-liners and they're more like real kids. The visuals were good and they make it better while the first one is a little clunky, but they're are some great scenes like the flying car, more Quiddich game scenes, and Harry goes toe to toe against Voldemort and his big snake inside the mysterious chamber. I'm pretty sure the director has same feel like "Home Alone 2," but I actually found it fun and very entertaining that I rather watch more. Of course ending was one the best emotional endings where Hagrid was safe and all of the students and teachers clap and it was wonderful. Overall, another great film.
    I like Dobby the house elf. It was portrayed by Toby Jones. And don't forget Kenneth Branagh as Gilderoy Lockhart. A Shakespearean wizard will later to make "Thor" and less well "Cinderella." I hope Emma Watson (Belle) will beat over against the less optimistic Cinderella.

    So glad you are finally reviewing these, Chris! The Chambet of Secretd is the most nostalgic Harry Potter film for me. I became a huge Potter fan when it came out, and it was the first film I ever saw twice in theaters. I still adore this film even if there are some better ones in the series. This and the first also get a B+ from me.

      The last three are not. They're thematically absent, the characters have no arc save Ron but his just feels out of place, there's unnecessary CGI and lackluster battles. Verrrrry flawed movies

    • @houston-coley
      @houston-coley 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +sivad parks I don't see it that way. It could be that because I've read the books I see new meaning in them? But Deathly Hallows parts 1 and 2 both include Harry's struggle of not knowing whether to trust Dumbledore and what he told him to do, which then culminates in Harry sacrificing himself (and ultimate act of trust in Dumbledore).

    • @sivad1025
      @sivad1025 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      HoustonProductions1 I've read Deathly Hallows 9 times. You pointed out two things I LOVE about the book. Trust and love, and how they intertwine with Dumbledore. Those were all omitted leaving a bland story and as I said, made the movies thematically absent.

      From the Books Wiki page: "Scholastic Corporation bought the U.S. rights at the Bologna Book Fair in April 1997 for US$105,000, an unusually high sum for a children's book.[15] They thought that a child would not want to read a book with the word "philosopher" in the title and,[33] after some discussion, the American edition was published in September 1998[34] under the title Rowling suggested, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.[15] Rowling claimed that she regretted this change and would have fought it if she had been in a stronger position at the time"

    The best part about this book/movie was reading "The Deathly Hallows" and finding out that the diary, which Harry destroyed with the Basilisk's tooth was one of the seven Horcruxes. Parts like that made it clear that Rowling was working on the creation of a larger story from the very beginning, instead of developing the plot with the books step by step, not knowing if they were even going to be successful.

It has great flashbacks that add a lot to the villain's character and some of he most fun fantasy adventure elements of the series like the car/wombing willow segment and the giant spiders and basilisk. It feels like the most fantastical HP movie.
    And it does great foreshadowing and setup with the diary holding a part of Voldermort's shattered soul and that part of Voldemort is in Harry. Elements of the story that come back in huge ways all throughout the franchise.

      Because it is the smartest and brings the potter universe to life the best with great acting, outstanding sets and planets, and feels like the most fantasy. The others have the characters in lots of drama or with an annoying character a lot but Azaban has triumphant moments with a moral. Buckbeak's flight being brought to life far better then the book and making changes to scenes that made the movie better and has some of the best soundtracks

      better direction, better acting from the 3 leads, and it just has a more interesting story. It does have some problems, though. Mostly areas wherein Alfonso chose style over substance. Like Harry using magic outside Hogwarts in the beginning, when the rule is mentioned later in the movie. Yeah, it makes for a cool opening, and sets the tone, but it doesn't make any sense.

    • @NolanDean

      It's when the actors really had to step up and mature into their roles. The film was darker, so naturally the tone felt more mature. And it was a nice departure from the regular solve a mystery and fight Voldemort formula. It has great themes of loneliness and isolation too, plus a pretty awesome werewolf fight.

    I truly don't understand why this film is generally considered to be one of the worst in the franchise (as in bottom two or so). I just don't get it. I like Chris, but the only "downfall" in this movie that he pointed out was that it's "interchangeable" with the first movie. This is a really stupid point, and he doesn't give any examples, he only says there's "lots of elements" where he thought to himself "haven't i seen this already?" what elements? the quiddich match? harry ron and hermione still being young?? AND WHY IS HE COMPARING THE "INTERCHANGEABILITY" OF THE FIRST 2 POTTER MOVIES WITH HOME ALONE? Home alone 1 and 2 ARE the same movie lol. The same thing happens. This potter movie has a completely new story. It was directed by the same guy so it may feel similar in that regard, but i don't get what "downfall" he is on about. It feels similar because, the first two movies are the two where more of the main conflict occurs in hogwarts than any of the others. And even IF what Chris is saying is a valid point, why is it a negative? you liked the first movie, and then your only complaint about the second was that it's similar to the first? chris didn't really "review" all the harry potter movies all that well. AND THEN HE GAVE FANTASTIC BEASTS AN A-?????!!!! AFTER GIVING THE FIRST 2 POTTER MOVIES B+???!!!! U KIDDING ME? this was a rant and i am triggered.

      ...a-a-and second or third worst adaptation of a book, given how much important character and relationship development they cut out. Plus, Cuaron jumped from fairytale style of the series right into the greyness which now seems a little bit DCEU-ish instead of slowly making the movie darker as it goes on. Add some illogical stuff in the very beginning, totally messed-up chronology, certain visual details changed for now reason and ruined core of Hermione's character. Although, having Gary Oldman as Sirius Black (as well as all the casting) is awesome.

      Jovany Marquez that's the thing, it wasn't "a little" darker, it was a complete change of tone compared to the first two movies. This flavour of magic in the atmosphere was gone. If they'd added just a few scenes from the book which showed how truly happy Harry was when he lived in the Diagon Alley or how happy all of Gryffindor was when they finally won the Quiddich Cup (but hey, lets cut out all the drama behind the Firebolt which shows complicated relationship between Harry, Ron and Hermione and how conflicted Hermione is inside and yeah - fuck Quiddich, it's not fun at all, is it?). There are tons of small bright moments like that in the book and I don't remember any bright moments in the movie except for the hyppogriff ride.

    • @nealwexler666
      @nealwexler666 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I personally like The Prisoner Of Azkaban the least of all the harry potter movies. It changed way too much and left way too much out from the book. The shrieking shack scene is one of the best written scenes of any harry potter book, fills in so much of the backstory, tells of the marauders, completely changes everything you thought you knew about Sirius Black. It flips everything on its head. However, the movie just rush right through that scene so we can have an action sequence of a chase through the forest which was both unnecessary and really not that great. So much of the magic of the books was lost in this movie and in turn the rest of the movie series was hurt by the abandonment of important parts of the backstory. People praise the cinematography, the darker elements, the camera work, etc... for me I wanted to see a good and true adaption from the book and this was not it. Not to mention, the new actor playing Dumbledore did a terrible job and the character is all wrong.

    in my opinion, I love the first two movies(based on nostalgia), like the third one (but have issues with it), Hate the fourth one, find 5 and 6 kind of forgettable, but both have really good scenes, and absolutely love the final two movies. I am happy you are reviewing these.

      NO NO NO NO NO NO! DEATHLY HALLOWS IS HORRIBLE! IT'S SLAPS EVERYONE WHO LIKED THE BOOK IN THE FACE! Instead of what we liked like Dumbledore's arc, Snape's arc (which is so freaking short shifted), showing each character show off how awesome they are, having trolls, buck beak and house elves fighting, showing Harry finally win with his ability to love, we get connecting the wands which a. makes no sense because it should only happen when the cores are the same and b. is the laziest and most uninteresting fight scene gimmick. We get Neville falling in love with Luna which never happened and serves no purpose, we get Voldemort slapping Harry and trying to choke him in a laugh out loud bad scene. We get awkward dialogue between Harry and Ron. Worst of all, Voldemort along with several others turns into paper!!!! For example, in the book Molly Weasley comes out and in ALL CAPS screams, "NOT MY DAUGHTER YOU BITCH! OUT OF MY WAY!" Not only did they cut half but the half that stayed was so underwhelming!!! What I hate more than anything is that Harry Potter's central theme is love. The-Boy-Who-Lived lived because of love. He's special because he's so loving. In the first and fifth even movies it is said that love is what he has that Dumbledore doesn't. In the final book, Harry Sacrifices himself and no spell cast by Voldemort works because of it. Because Harry outsmarted him and finally learned, he weilded the elder wand and killed him in front of everybody (ps. the book says "his body crumpled to the ground" not "turned inexplicably onto paper") The omition of this scene completely ruins the movie thematically. It makes no sense that Harry was able to fight Voldemort. Everything up to this has said otherwise. It's even worse that it was replaced by a super corny and not to mention terrible looking battle.
      If you can say this movie is A+ you are flat out lying to yourself

      ***** For one, I don't blame anyone for liking this. Giving an A+ implies perfection and a movie so littered in flaws doesn't deserve that. I don't want a word for word adaptation. I love the third movie. Very different. It works because it changed for the better of the story. Deathly Hallows passed me off because the ommited important scenes which I'd be fine with but replaced them with something really rather terrible.

    I'm a huge fan of Harry Potter, like very , very, very much. And Chamber of Secrets is such an underrated film everybody seems to hate on it, and I think thats unfair. this one was always one of my favorites because of Tom Riddle's character in this film. It is very scary and has sucha strong villain.

    I know it's a small part in the movie but I wish he talked about Ron's terrified facial expressions in the movie. They were hilarious, especially that horrified noise he pulls off when he points up at the spiders coming down on him and Harry. And lest we forget the "Why can't it be follow the butterflies?" line. That's so funny.
