      Kaylee Reppel that's weird cause even rewatching the film as a 17 year old, it still remains one of my least favorite HP movies (it's still a very good movie though). what killed the movie for me was the time travel plot point in the 3rd act which makes no sense whatsoever

      @@ogge9304 don’t think there are any boring parts in the movie at all as every scene is important and serves a purpose for the experience of the plot and immersive hog warts experience.
      If there were any, that would just be subjective as every scene is important.
      It’s just fantastic all the way and it’s the best one in terms of cinematography and lighting as the whole movie looks like a beautiful somber painting and it’s amazing.
      I love the depressing somber feel and look of the movie while still at times keeping the whimsical Harry Potter magical feel in more light hearted moments with its character action and music.
      Movie couldn’t put in every thing because there’s a limit to what a 2 hour movie can do compared to a book that can take hours upon hours to read hundreds of pages and the film did the best it could with its content.
      It’s all great and amazing but prisoner of Azkaban is one I would put above it.

    • @Gadget-Walkmen
      @Gadget-Walkmen 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ogge9304 the main reasons for why some fans had issues with half blood prince is because they didn’t include everything from the book like more scene with Harry and Ginny’s relationship being fleshed out and more of Tom Riddle’s backstory in it.
      These are pretty in important elements important and to the book so of course they would be added to the movie.
      You just didn’t like them in of themselves as an extension of the book if they were more to be added.
      The burrow scene was included was to showcase how threatening the death eaters we’re getting to show how they can attack the weasley’s house with ease. Not that big of a deal to include it, just show how much of a threat they are.
      People
      That “tonal problem” that you say about humor is a constant in a lot of Harry Potter movies because they constantly switch from humor to serious in life dangerous situations and joke around it a bit in every movie. That happens in every movie from after Harry finds out who Peter Petgrew is, from lockheart almost using a charm to make forgot who they are and backfires on him to make a funny moment in the chamber of secrets, and all the joking around in draco’s manor in deathly hallows in life and death situations with the death eaters.
      This kind of stuff happens ALL time in Harry Potter, not much different from Indiana Jones, it’s all works out to ease off tension.
      If you didn’t find the joke funny, that’s fine and on you but it’s definitely not a “tonal problem” at all.
      The love drama and romance stuff is important and fans wanted MORE of that fleshed out so sorry that’s just you not liking something that was also heavily emphasized in the book. As for the humor, that’s subjective.
      I myself and a lot of people found it funny and you didn’t, fine leave it at that.

    Easily my favorite of the franchise (alongside the last part). Even as a kid, I really enjoyed it while others around me said it was their least favorite. As I re-watched it over the years, I just grew to appreciate it more and more.
    Alfonso Cuaron made it SO BEAUTIFUL! The Cinematography is just gorgeous. Also, John Williams returns to score it and he adds a lot of new tracks, which were simply breathtaking.
    Two favorite scenes:
    1. The train sequence where Dementors arrive. Hauntingly beautiful.

    Personally I think this is the best Harry Potter film. The later films too much out of the books, making those films have horrendously weak plots comparatively and in the earlier films everything hadn't quite clicked together yet.This also has by far the best direction of all the films.
    Not to mention that the time travel element in this film is incredibly cool.

    It's without a doubt the most complete film of the series. It hit the perfect balance between light and dark, didn't waste new characters, focused on the relationships, didn't feel crammed into two hours, and didn't skimp on the effects.

    This is 100% the best movie in the franchise. The only one where I don't feel I'm being deprived of stuff from the book. The transition to a more adult tone, the cinematography, the acting, the score etc, everything is on point.

      @MarkHogan994 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Interesting that you say it's the only one where you don't feel deprived of stuff from the book, given that it cut out A LOT of interesting and important backstory and info that greatly contributed to the novel being so compelling.

    • @AnalSeepageForDummies
      @AnalSeepageForDummies 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mark Hogan Yeah, this was the first Harry Potter movie to truly disappoint me with the amount of stuff they cut out, like there was barely even a mystery with the stuff with Peter Pettigrew and Sirius. They just filled up the movie with overly drawn out set pieces that they thought would please critics. Not to mention Harry practicing magic in the intro of the movie is a perfect example of the directors caring nothing of the subject material and shitting all over the canon the entire series has established for the sole purpose of a flashy intro.

    • @RonnieR29
      @RonnieR29 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I hear y'all. Of course in a 2 1/2 hour movie based on a book stuff is gonna get cut out. I'm just saying the knowledge of what you know in the books to what you see on screen blend almost perfectly. I'm so happy Alfonso was given the chance to direct. And yeah I was bummed he wasn't doing another HP film but he made Chidren of Men instead and that's one of my favorite movies so it worked out :)
      P.S. If there is a minor complaint I have yeah Gryffyndor winning the Quidditch cup would've been nice to see but that would've turned this movie into a 3 hour event which super fans would love but the average person would think is too long.

    PoA is also my favorite of the whole franchise. Alfonso knew what he was doing. The opening with Harry blowing up his aunt, the beautiful soundtracks and all the stuffs happened at the same time at that scene, the bird out of the clock, the ballet on tv, Dudley being hit by button, the dog eating Dursley’s feet, the aunt screaming and bouncing on the ceiling. These things are so well stacked up well layered but not messy and you are just like tasting something really rich in flavor and texture. Really remarkable.
    Then my second favorite scenes would be the knight bus ride and the staying in leaky cauldron. The magic in these 2 scenes just blend in so well in a really natural way. It makes magic just like some everyday life stuff that you as the audience would also see next Monday on your way to school or to work. You don’t get too much of a good stuff. And it’s a wonderful experience seeing it.
    As a really dedicated hp fans, I really believe in magic in certain way and i would say only Alfonso had given me the best experience of the magical world. Not even jk Rowling who literally wrote it. When you really believe in magic, then it just should be like your lamp in the living room and your fridge in kitchen. They’re there and they work all the time. You don’t need to give them a shot every 10 seconds to tell other people how wonderful and amazing they are. They are already part of your life. You don’t need a song with lyrics like “ a cauldron full of hot strong love” as extra reminder to others that they are now experiencing a magical world, that’s an unnecessary move.

    Only thing this movie needed was a few more lines of exposition since it did a really poor job of explaining just what the deal was with the Marauder's Map. A brief explanation from Lupin that he and his friends (including Harry's dad are the one's named on the map) created it when they were in school there. You shouldn't have to read the book to understand why Lupin knew how to use it.

  • @BartAllen

    *The most accurate portrayal of Dumbledore on-screen :3*
    *As much as I prefer Richard Harris' portrayal of Albus, Alfonso Cuarón had been the only director to truly tap into the warmth and eccentricities, as well as the nigh-craziness of Albus; something which Mike Newall (Goblet of Fire) would later undo from Michael Gambon with an "angry Dumbledore". Harry first impression of the character from Philosopher's Stone supports this:*
    *"Is he - a bit mad?" he asked Percy uncertainly.*

    • @CampingforCool41
      @CampingforCool41 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Exactly. POA Dumbledore is in my opinion the closest to the books. He's got an edge to him- like you don't want to mess with him- but he's also eccentric and at times warm. He's not too bad after Goblet of Fire, but missing some of that eccentricity.

    I think I agree on the shrieking shack part: when I first saw it in like 5th grade or something, I honestly just didn’t understand who was who, cause I hadn’t read that far I guess. Also the time turner thing kinda fried my child brain
    When I watched it a few years later and having read all the books multiple times, it honestly became my favorite HP movie. Watching it now theres just so much to love:
    Amazing cinematography
    Frequent themes and motifs
    Great story that DOESNT include Voldemort, replacing a pure evil villain with an uncertain one
    Plot twists that work
    Whole time turner part is amazing, with a very satisfying ending
    Honestly my only complaint is the weird shriveled head things. I dunno which magical creature they correspond to in the books, but they just creeped me out as kid more than the dementors

    I thought michael Gambon seemed less aware of what is around him than the book Dumbledore. He is also to loud, for example the scene in GOF where he almost knocks harry over asking him "DID YOU PUT YOUR NAME IN THE GOBLET OF FIRE" Harry seemed scared of Dumbledore, in which he never is. Michael Gambon didn't seem too much in control IMO, he needed to have a softer voice, and a guy you just wanna hug, like Richard Harris's Dumbledore

    This movie didn't have dragons, dangerous snakes or giant spiders, hell Voldemort isn't even present in this movie. And as a kid, I still loved it more than the others films. All the Patronus scenes give me chills to this day now that I understand the real meaning behind them (you can always find happiness within yourself to repell sadness). Rowling wrote a fantastic story and Cuarón, being the talented director that he is (see Roma/Children of Men, for example) made a truly beautiful movie. Also, the music in this entry is imo the best in the entire series. Williams at his peak, no doubt (just a year later Revenge of the Sith came out... Yeah, also a musical masterpiece).

    When it came out, I was disappointed that a lot of stuff from the book got cut out, and there were changes made. Looking back on it, though, having become more cineliterate since, I can see it for the masterpiece it is. Cuaron takes the themes and ideas of the book, and makes an incredible fantasy adventure, that really set the template for where the rest of the series would go.
    I could write a whole essay on why I love this one, and why it's my favourite of the eight, but I'll just sum it up; amazingly directed, adapted, acted, and scored.

    I have to say: I loved this movie as a kid, but when I read the book, and rewatched the movie, it was a bit underwhelming, because there were a few differences, but now that I’m older and I rewatched the movie, it’s a lot better than I thought. Despite the differences between the movie and the book, it’s actually pretty good; in fact, it’s not just pretty good. It’s amazing!!! What I meant by the differences, are the last two Quidditch matches being omitted, but then I realized that those matches had nothing to do with the story. As long as they got the story right, which they did, that’s great. That’s all that matters. Overall I LOVE Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, and nowadays it’s my favorite Harry Potter movie, because it has the best visuals, and because the tone is a balance between light and dark. It also has the best music, because of the different themes, like A Window to the Past, Buckbeak’s Flight, Double Trouble, and Aunt Marge’s Waltz. John Williams did an excellent job with the music in these movies. I have to give him credit. I’m bummed that he didn’t do the score for the rest of the franchise. I feel like Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is one of those movies that you need to rewatch in order to appreciate it more. Edit: Happy 20th Anniversary Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban!!!

    You portray my sentiment so perfectly Jeremy....when I watches it as a kid I didn't really like Azkaban...but as a grown up its probably my favorite in the franchise...even the musical score is unique is this one

    Favourite HP movie. Favourite part would be the entire last act of this film, the time turner sequence is done so well!

    The Prisoner of Azkaban came out when I was 8 years old and has always been my favorite Harry Potter movie. The biggest part of that would be the scene with the first dementor attack. I had childhood epilepsy as well as autism that wouldn't be diagnosed until later that year and I was beginning to notice that I was different from my brother and sister and I thought that something was wrong with me. When i watched Harry get attacked and faint I felt like they had captured the feeling of having a seizure perfectly. The terrifying nature of the dementor felt like the feeling of anticipation when I new that I was going to go unconscience and wake up on the floor feeling unbelievably sick and the shot of Harry passing out captured the moment of when the seizure starts perfectly. Seeing that scene made me feel less broken and more human than I had felt in a long time.

    After seeing this movie I became a fan and started reading the books. The darker tone and time travel, and werewolf threw me for a loop. That Sirius Black wanted poster is so iconic too!

    I agree with Jeremy. When I first watched this movie when it came out in theaters, I didn’t like it because it varied wildly from the book in many parts. Today watching it, although still not my favorite, I totally dig it and I can recognize the change in tone for character development and the adjustments for a better movie flow.

    I can't wait to see your Goblet of Fire review. Despite what you said about this one, for me, Goblet was truly the first film to take the series in both a dark and emotional direction.

    I have yet to rewatch the third one because I feel the exact same way as you did. I hated how the movie transitioned from the second to the third. The outfits were modified, the hairstyles changed, the color pallet washed out, and the tone darkened. However, I think I will enjoy it if I watch it again.

    Also, say what you will about the rest of the series, but that scene at the end with the Patronus successfully knocking back the Dementors is the single most breathetaking, moving scene in the entire series IMO, matched only by the "King's Cross" scene in the last movie. Also the "Liquid Luck" sequence at Hagrid's shack (movie #6) is an epic scene that matches the feeling I got reading that chapter PERFECTLY.
