  • The Asics Novablast 4 and Asics Superblast are two of the highly-cushioned training shoes in Asics' lineup. However, they have different midsole materials, ride experiences and intended use cases-plus, there is a $60 difference between the two, with the Novablast coming at $140 and the Superblast at $200. In this video, I take both for a run and give my thoughts on who each shoe is best for.

Thank you for giving alternatives to Superblast. Here in my country it is almost impossible to get the Superblast, and the price is crazy. I need a light shoe for half marathons and marathons for tempo 4:35-5:00 per km. Last time I used Adizero Adios Pro 3. It was great, helpful, but at the end it felt a little bit too firm. And actually it's a pity to wear these shoes at such a pace. I would use the Saucony Triumph, but during long runs I feel they are too heavy. So maybe Mach 6 will work for me. Good job!

Have had the Superblast since last August with over 320 miles, still going strong and love it especially for faster efforts mixed in. I just got the Novablast 4 and took it for a 10 mile long run and it was like butter. I was really impressed. It was perfect for the LSD at 9:20 pace and found it better for that than the Superblast. It always feels like it wants to pick up the pace a tad. The durability is unmatched though. I’ll take it to 500 miles at least.

Yeah superblast do need some time to break in. At first i’m also confused why people say it was one of the best shoe out there, but after 70km i do understand it now. That also happened to me with the Adios Pro 3, i don’t like the shoes at the beginning. But after 50-60km, it’s become one of my favorite shoe to run. And the foam and outsole durability as a racing shoe is unmatched. I think you should also give Adios Pro a chance to break in.

This was the comparison I was excited to see. I'm going to start spreading the rumor that Asics has a hydrogen blend in their premium foams. How else do they make such a light weight race shoe or supermax shoe? I'm really wanting to use the Superblast for my 12-14 mile runs because it feels so protective. However, if I didn't have my nurse's discount, I wouldn't hesitate to buy the Novablast. I had the Novablast 2 & 3 and I did get over 500 miles in the Novablast 3; I would have done more if it wasn't 1/2 size too small.

I can only compare the Triumph 21 to the Novablast 4. The Triumph 21 has a far superior upper. It has a really dialled in fit from heel to midfoot and then opens up in width at the forefoot, but vertical room remains normal if that makes sense. I don't get on with the Novablast upper. The upper is more structured and firm. The heel fit is okay, but I can't get a secure fit in the midfoot so my foot always feels like it shifts forward when I run, no matter how tight I do the laces. My big toe then rubs where the toe box tapers. I ordered a US 11.5 and 12 and the same thing happens in both. I ended up keeping the 11.5, but wish I'd kept neither. I am a 12 in the Triumph which I always am in Saucony.
The ride in the Triumph 21 has excellent roll through. It took a little while to soften up, but feels good now. I actually don't mind a firmer shoe. I've done 400km in the Brooks Hyperion Max, but I felt the Triumph had that sink and this feeling where there was initial softness then sudden thud when the foam reached its limit, but that feeling is gone now. The Novablast I just find slappy. I don't get any roll through until I pick up the pace and that's not what I wanted the shoe for, nor do I like it for that as it feels like a lot of shoe on foot. I'd say it is somewhat clog-like. I think the level of softness is similar in both shoes, but I find the foam in the Triumph to be more responsive. The Novablast 4 felt bouncy when I tested them inside, but that went away pretty much straight after I started running in them. I found them a bit dull and energy sapping overall.
      All completely subjective of course.

@@wordsovsean8905 I just got the Triumph 20 in the mail yesterday, all-black color size 12.5, which is my normal size in most shoes unless I size up to 13 if the shoe is narrow. After 1 run I like it so far. It’s definitely bouncy and energetic. The heel feels a bit unstable to me, especially when walking, but I think I’ll get used to it. The outsole grip seemed very good even in light trail running. Thank you very much for your reply.
