I did a project once on a 28 trawler type boat that was in quite bad shape, filled the holes, sanded, it was expensive then but used interlux perfection 2 part polyurethane, 1 undercoat was enough, no see thru, 2 coats of finish rolled and tipped, not me i can't do paint I am too meticulous and panic immediately if some goes not as planned, but a friend was pro painter. the result was beyond my expectations, maintenance was very minimal. I sold that boat to a friend, that boat still shines after over 10 years just washing with soap once after winter when launching and once after fall when storing the boat. That paint gets really hard, you can't mark it with your nail. One funny thing was at the end of summer every boat was black from fishing squid as ink gets in the gelcoat and does not wash away, with our painted boat just spray salt water and ink washes away., need to go have my boat to polish haha
Nice, I used Interlux perfection paint on my wellcraft and it has a great mirror finish. Used max bod epoxy on the deck that did discolor after 8 yrs so just did deck paint same color on top
Gel coat especially old gel coat is really porous under a micrscope, so it holds stains or criters. Paint will clean way easier and in the last coat add fisheye eliminator which put a coating of silicone in and on the coating and nothing sticks to oil, grease, algae, nothing sticks to it. I like base clear myself very easy fix with the blending solvent. Single stage epoxy paint best for floors and under water using fisheye eliminator on the last coat
@@yamahass66 fisheye eliminator puts a film of silicone on the surface and it last a really long time and makes it hard for barnacles to stick. You will notice dirt wipes off with a soft brush or rag.
Gel coat is also the outer waterproof coating as even 5 layers of GRP can be porous it can be impossible to cover the millions of holes in woven or chopped strand 👍🏻
So the other day, my nephew asked his captain how he keeps the hull of his scallop dragger so clean (it’s never on dry ground) he heard if you add cayenne pepper to bottom paint it keeps the bottom free of grass and growth. The dude tried it and it works. He said he bought the cheapest paint he could get because he did not think it would work and it did! Imma try it next time I paint our boat. What is there to lose?

I use airless white on my project boats, it rolls on easy and smooth, lasts for years, and is easy to clean and near impossible to scratch.
