- In this video, I talk about the persisting drivetrain problem and new transmission issue my 3rd gen Tundra is having. With so many quality control issues and now engine recall, is it time to move on to something new?

Case manager ghosted you. Corporate didn't care about you. I'm happy you got a new 4Runner. If a carmaker did that to me I would consider elsewhere 😵💫🥶
Vw did that to me and I will never ever buy another vw. They will never get another penny from me
Hate to tell ya that is the tactic every manufacturer uses when it comes to potential lemon law cases. FCA did it to me. Doesn’t matter which one they all do everything in their power to avoid it and force you to get a lawyer.
I agree! F Toyota!
The new Tundra is a wonderful peace of junk. I like your new replacement.
Yep, me too. I picked up a used 21 4R myself due to this..I absolutely love it..Like you said, I'd rather pay at the pump then at the shop!
Couldn’t wait to get rid of my 4Runner, hate the power train.
@@user-et4yo4fm1n I felt the same way about the Tacoma..Couldn’t wait to get rid of it
2021 was the last of the reliable Tundras.
i REALLY LIKE MY 2021!
See comment above about 2016 "Lemona"
True. I have a 2020 and bought a 2021 to avoid this nightmare.
@@megharper5077 Why didn't you just keep the 2020? Are they much different in one year model?
I did keep the 2020. I bought a second V8! I also am the original owner of a 2002 Tundra.
after toyota ruined the tacoma, i thought about going to the tundra. now they have bad issues as well. i think nissan is the answer.
F150 Ecoboosts are rock solid now...they were for most of their 14 years except for 2017-2020....
Gone 90s Toyota's golden years. I still have my 1999 Camry and after 25 years with 230k miles still running strong with all memories I have with this car.
Thanks for sharing your story.....Sorry you had to go through all that.
They just recalled 100,000 Tundras for potential metal shavings in the engine. That tells you that if you’re having issues this early… they’re not just going to magically stop. It’s going to get worse. No vehicle get LESS problems as it ages.
Exactly
And when they blow out of warranty, that's $30k MORE out of pocket, or pull the cab off in your back yard and try it yourself. Truck is totaled.
you are a smart guy . that 4runner will outlast any new turbo crap vehicle by 20 years.
Lifelong Toyota customer here, always purchased new, and my 2023 4runner is the last Toyota I'll ever buy.
U know u are lying 😂

Me too. I grabbed a 2023 Gx460 to get the last V8. That's the 16th Toyota I've bought. And I'm not buying any more until/unless the brand gets the modern kinks worked out and returns to reliability.
I did 100% the same thing. I bought my dream truck.. the 2022 Tundra... and instantly I wad disappointed in the rattles.. the recalls and even my check engine light that came on on a road trip.
2 weeks ago I heard about engine failures. I took it in and traded it for a 2024 4 runner. Yes I miss the power and how the Tundra drove. But I instally noticed how much better quality the 4Runner was.
I currently own a 2023 tundra platinum and have had zero issues. My truck was built 9/2023. I did an oil change at 1000 and five thousand miles just like I did with my 2022 pathfinder and my wife’s 2021 Honda passport. I have had no issues so far.
Wow! That’s amazing…..
They should put you in a Toyota commercial
There is a bad shadow over your truck.
YOUR ENGINE IS SOON GOING TO IMPLODE.... DEFECTIVE CRANK BEARINGS! ...IT'S ALL OVER THE INTERNET
You’re an intelligent and rational person, not to mention loyal to the brand. Shame on Toyota for treating you that way! Their customer svc, in the face of adversity w/ these Tundra issues, is deplorable! Best of luck w/ the 4-Runner, maybe the last of truly reliable Toyota SUV’s.
Thank you!
We can all blame our leaders in Washington DC for these costly changes in manufacturers engines.
Fingers crossed 2025 don’t have issues
Congratulations and you knew forerunner I did reviews on these new generation tundra. I purchased one and today I saw it because it sound to me. It’s gonna be a bee headed for that recall.
I hear you my man I just purchased the same thing this past Wednesday
“When it’s working, it’s a great truck”😂 On a serious note, sorry you have to go through all that.
Thank you for the video…had some of the same issues with my 2023 platinum Tundra,Including the hum at about 70 miles per hour. The day after the major engine recall was announced and that did it for me as well…I traded for the same 2024 TRD off road 4 runner in the underground. This is the Toyota quality that we all know and rely on.
Great Move, Good looking Rig 👌
Thank you!
Good move on the 4Runner. They have not ruined that model yet.
Only the 4runner has one of the most outdated power train. Paying 50k for a truck from 2010 is worse.
@@beexiong2995 MSRP on a 2010 4Runner = $29,175. That's $49,393.97 in 2024 fiat toilet paper money. So.. uhh.. yea you're objectively incorrect lmao
Got a 2024 Limited non-hybrid 4×4 and hoping that it wasn't a mistake. Reliability is a big reason I wanted a Tundra. I have had numerous Toyotas over the years and they have been reliable. I think Toyota will take care of their customers despite the hiccups.
The 4Runner is sweet. Congratulations on the new rig
I think this is a turning point for Toyota. They've chosen profit over quality just like Detroit did in the 70s and look how that played out. It's concerning that the Japanese brands are choosing this path...so now I guess we just won't have reliable vehicles AT ALL anymore?
Toyota Usa.....is far to independent. Toyota Japan, far, far better quality cars.
Crazy, glad I kept my 2018 Tundra
Made in famed Tahara plant Japan…next gen will also. Good going! Years and years of great service if u keep all those driveline fluids changed properly. 👊
Great choice. i got mine in May. Also in underground.
Toyota....the Pride Before The Fall...
EXCELLENT CHOICE.
Wise choice. I did the same thing. I got rid of my 24 Tundra yesterday after the recall. I bought the same 4Runner different color, 4Runners are old school and will never give you any trouble.
Congrats!
did Toyota give you any hassle for trading???
@@LexusGX460-OFF-ROAD the dealership did their best to get a fair deal together and give me as much for the Tundra as possible. At the end of the day, they did their job. These techs can only polish a turd so much when there are inherent design flaws and quality control issues. Toyota corporate is a different story, though.
Just curious when comparing the two, how is the new 4runner for interior space?
Did they make you roll the negative equity over to the new car, or were they at least considerate enough to eat the negative equity?
*You have no idea how us Toyotaphiles genuinely appreciate you testing this new gen... its cliché to call you a beta-tester but we need owners like you to establish the issues that hopefully Toyota can eventually fix... thanks for updating us 🙏... and also get a GX460* 😉
Haha, I strongly considered a used GX. Just couldn't find one with low enough mileage at the right price.
@@ZetaDogProductions How about a Landcruiser 200 Heritage Edition?
Good luck with the new 4Runner. It’s a beautiful truck
Thank you!
Good choice 👍 R&Q equals tranquility and mental health.
Smart man !
I’m going to ride this out!
Great choice 😊
Yup, we bought a 2023 4R PRO in anticipation of all these issues and needing a solid truck. You made a wise choice.
Hated mine.
You made a very wise decision in buying the 4Runner , I bought a new one in 2022 at this moment I have 38k on it and have had absolutely 0 issues great suv a little old school on some things but it’s built to last ! It’s really sad to see so many issues with Toyota I really hope they wake up. Best to you , enjoy many trouble free miles in your 4Runner
Thank you, amigo!
“It’s just not that well made-it’s a solid vehicle. When it works like it’s supposed to it’s great” lol those are some wild quotes. You definitely traded UP
welcome to the 4runner family, she looks sweet. not as sweet as my 5th gen though😅😅 congrats on your new toy, i have had zero problems on my 2016 4runner trail with kdss and have never regretted it. Sorry to hear about the tundra, but the way the world is going it doesn't surprise me.
Thank you!
Congrats on the new ride! Hope the dealer treated you ok on trade. Really extravagant measures Toyota has taken to sell more 4Runners 😂 (ruining all other platforms)
Hope you like yours, I just bought my wife this exact model a couple days ago, we needed a new offroad vehicle and wanted to avoid the garbage IForce 4 cylinder coming in 2025.
Almost bought one earlier this year. Saw everyone having so many problems on the forums, etc. I knew I just wouldn't trust it. Really glad I passed at this point. Really drove nice and the power was great, but when I started really looking at the lack of build quality up close, I decided to move on. Seems more and more like it was a good choice not to.
Congrats on the 4runner. Last of the good ones.
I got a 2024 MGM Tundra Limited HV in late March and have a little over 2k miles on it. Read about the recalls on the ‘22-‘23 years non hybrid trims and checked the dipstick after my wife got home with my Tundra since I took her 2024 Sienna XLE to the dealership so they can inspect the weatherstrip on the roof rail that detached from the back end of the driver side after an automatic car washed done a few days ago and thankfully they are going to replace both sides with new parts that are back ordered free of charge under warranty and we have an ugly bad good history with our local dealership service department so you know the deal. They’re going to take good care of us regardless. I’m a fair customer as much as they are so no matter what happens to our Toyota vehicles while it is on their hands, it will be taken care of. And to give you the answer on the dipstick, it shows a nice reading on it and oil looks clean so far with a 2k+ miles driven.
it’s a beautiful Toyota. I wish you all the luck in the world.
Thank you, amigo!
I own a 2017 4runner limited , purchased new , going on 63000 miles problem free. I love the vehicle, its solid and still drives like new , yea i get the comments about lousy gas mileage , the way i see it I have a vehicle that will never break down , no repair expenses ! screw the gas cost , one major repair and your gas savings goes out the window
Tundra has become the bottom of the barrel as far as full size trucks are concerned.
Traded in my 2016 Tacoma that had so many issues we nicknamed it the Lemona 🍋. That truck spent more time on the dealerships lift than it did in our garage. Best part... trying to get Toyota to stand behind their "warranty."
Love my F150 5.0 xlt. 89k trouble-free miles. No turbos! Just a great V8 that gets me 22/23 mog on the highway... no problems at all.
So much for those that say Tundra is bulletproof.
@@jerryjeromehawkins1712Ford knows trucks. The V8 gets the same mpg as the new taco 🤣. My hybrid Maverick has better payload than that tundra 🤣
@@jerryjeromehawkins1712The Coyote F150 is a sweet truck, owned a few…. Currently running F150 Powerboost for personal truck and love it.
@@jerryjeromehawkins1712I’ve had a few stupid reliability issues on my 2018 F150 I bought new. Buzzing wheel hubs, seized wiper linkage, broken spare tire winch, now my rear view camera went out and it’s not the camera….no engine or transmission or diff issues but still not great. Worse than my wife’s 2015 Altima. Way worse than my 2006 civic.
traded in my tundra 3days before the recall , got a ram with 100k and still light years better quality of that toy. good luck with the 4rn
This going to make 1st &2nd gen tundras hold value even better now
I have a 22’ Tundra and that’s why I too bought a 24’ 4Runner. No way I could not buy the last year 4Runner even if I’m more in debt with trucks loans than I ever been.
I guess I dodged that bullet ... I was searching pretty hard for a third generation Tundra when they first came out to upgrade from a first gen Tacoma but all the dealers were ( 4 in my area) marking them up. I don't play the markup game and bought a slightly used '21 from a BMW dealer 😂
Awesome truck, cant believe the massive room inside!
I went and bought a 2023 Nissan TItan V8 instead and it has the old school quality feel to it.
This is funny! I gave my TRD 4r to my wife to haul dogs around. These things don’t have the power and the transmission is always hunting for the right gear. I tried to pull a 2,800 lb trailer around Utah and Idaho. The engine is either bogging or reving to the moon. Bad choice for towing a four thousand lb trailer you’re going to regret it.
I bought a F150 ten speed 5.0 to pull my trailer in 2018 and never looked back. The coyote has been rock solid.
I didn't get the 4Runner to tow specifically, but again, I'm not too worried about it. I'll post a video of the first tow. Thanks for the input and for watching!
Smart choice! That 4.0 V6 engine is bulletproof as the 5.7 V8 is. Thanks for sharing! Japanese made are the best. How did the trade in work out?
Not as well as I hoped, but not awful. Just relieved to be out of the Tundra. Can't put a price on peace of mind. Thanks for watching!
Good choice
I was fortunate to get my 2021 tundra sr5 and I love it. I could have gotten a 2022 tundra but I decided not to get it. I’m glad I did I also purchased my wife a 2022 4Runner last year and she loves it. I had a 2012 tundra before the 2021 tundra and I was able to get 358 thousand miles before I sold it for 4k. The truck was very reliable and dependable which lead me to buy the 2021 tundra. Hopefully 🙏🏽 I get the same dependable service I got with my old tundra. Good luck with everything ✅👍
Thank you!
wise move
Smart move on the 5th gen. I've had one for the last 10 years. It has been the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned. Simplicity at its finest.
Almost the same for me. Except I couldn’t pull the trigger on the new Tundra vs my really great 2019 Tundra Limited. $38;500 new. I kept my 19 w the perfect V8 and got a 2024 4Runner made still in Japan. So solid, proven smooth V6 full frame. These generation vehicles will be very valuable in the future. But they will run forever for me.
yours is a 2024? i see recall on earlier years but not 2024 yet...
Win win win 🏆 100%
No issues with my 2024 platinum.
This makes the 5.4 3v look reliable.
🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🛻🛻🛻🛻
Toyota trucks had a good run, but that's over. Glad a have a 2018 Tundra and 2024 4Runner.
Bro, I love my ZR2 Chevy HD2500 with a real 6.6 V8.
Traded my Tundra for a 4Runner on Memorial Day, just before the engine recall bomb. 😅
Return that piece of crap.
What an utter joke toyota has become.
I had a 91 SR5, a 2013 Tundra and a 2018 Tundra. Loved them all.
They have completely lost the plot.
Go buy a ford or GM. You will be back 😂
@@beexiong2995I am running a 2010 F 150, 300,000 miles on it.
Your point?
My new 2020 Camry made me leave Toyota products. It was the worst new car I've ever owned and Toyota wouldn't fix much of anything. They wouldn't even try. It was plagued with transmission, engine and electrical problems. Sad car for a EX Toyota fan.
Toyota corporate and dealer network response was horrible resolving issues with a 2019 Tacoma I purchased new. Subpar experience and way too many issues. Unloading it was the best thing I did. Moved on and didn’t look back. It was my first Toyota and not likely to consider the brand in the future. Move on, it’s not worth the aggravation.
Second generation Tundra was the last good full size Toyota truck.
Good looking 4Runner… Red McCombs sucks though!
200k Bumper to Bumper warranty, and I'm good! Do it, Toyota!
I hope they do right by y'all!
I’m really contemplating on what to do now. I currently have a 2022 Toyota Tacoma and it is just too tight for me and my teenage kids in the back.
I have been really thinking about getting a new Toyota tundra which I had previous second GEN 2014 Toyota Tundra in the past and loved it but these new ones had me second-guessing .
I’m just curious when comparing the interior size how is it comparing it to your previous 2024 Tundra that you had?
There's definitely more room in the back seat area, but it's not as bad as you'd think. With the way Toyota designed the front console area, the front area of the Tundra doesn't feel as spacious as it should. I actually find the 4Runner more comfortable in the cockpit. The visibility is also superior in the 4Runner.
@@ZetaDogProductions yeah I went and sat in a couple new Tundras and I love the way they feel when comparing it to what I currently drive my Tacoma. But after watching your video and listening to what you had to say, I’m really second-guessing what I should do. I guess I’ll be waiting to see your first video on your new 4Runner to help and learn more on it. Your new forerunner looks really nice. Congratulations!
@@andy.hanway thank you!
You had best get the crewmax tundra, as the backseat on my dc is pathetic, Tacoma has a bigger rear seat then a dc tundra.😊
It’s the last year for a good 4 runner…….good move
Yes way too many problems that I will never buy and have the headache of owning it so no won’t buy ever !
The secondary message: don’t buy a used gen3
How did you make out with the trade in on the Tundra?
The dealership worked with me, but it was a giant pain in the ass. I don't think dealerships are thrilled about 3rd gen trade in's right now.
I went to the dealership two weeks ago and test drove the new Tacoma and put a deposit on a 2024 4Runner coming in.
Smart
Back in 2019 I heard about the Tundra tt v6 and told my wife I want nothing to do with turbos...man I am glad I have my 20 Tundra TRD OR. I also like leaf springs in the rear which is better for towing weight. My truck has 56 000 kilometres and will out last me. The new Tundra is not good and I am skeptical about the new Tacoma. If your 4 runner has the 4 litre v6, it is near bullet proof. I had a 13 Taco and was best truck I ever owned. It was dead reliable.
Yep, the 4Runner has the 4.0 V6.
Yep. Sale it
Sounds like the rear end and transmission works similar to how the 3rd Gen Tacoma runs.
I knew you were getting the last of reliability made in japan 100 percent reliability and quality that's gonna last you decades
LEMON MY FRIEND, MANY ISSUES, MANY DAYS WITHOUT DRIVING YOUR TRUCK, THATS NIGHTMARE
Fast growth, constantly changing emissions, new technology and poorer American build quality. I stay with Japanese built 4runners and even that quality of materials isn't what it used to be. Probably the turbo and waste gate making noise. My turbo had the whine, but it seemed to keep the deer out of the road at 130mph coming home from work late night. Sadly I don't want to drive anything but a Toyota but if I needed a truck to do truck things I would have to get a RAM diesel. They should have just built a Ridgeline Sport truck. Oh wait they just did.
The hybrids have had few issues with engines or transmissions.
They've actually been having transmission leaks.
Did you totally leave out what your ended up doing with your Tundra or did I miss that part?
Ended up dumping it for a 4Runner. It's at the end of the video.
As in trading it in to the dealer for trade in value?
My 2008 Tundra with the 5.7L V8 has 300,000 miles, still running strong. Toyota really ruined the Tundra. Only way to maybe bring it back is to put back that tried and tested V8. When I was in the market to get a new truck, the Tundra was not even on my list due to them dropping the V8. So I went with a 2022 Tacoma off road and it has been solid.
Dude I bought the same exact truck, in the same underground color. Mine just unfortunately came with different tires and rims, which I hate but it’s the only one they had
You can always add the tires and wheels. Congrats!
Nothing to apologize about. Toyota built a shitty truck and theres no way of saving the 3rd gen Tundra without a major face lift and QC overhaul. The 3rd gen Tundra has literally killed the Tundra nameplate's reputation for reliability AND quality. The grab handle alone on the 4Runners door feels better built than a whole 3rd gen Tundra.
There are just as many failures with Ford, GM, and Ram you do not really have much choice I just watched a video on here a guy is on his 4th engine on a F-150 you can search it easy to find. We are living in a time where the engines are extremely complicated with very tight tolerances to meet EPA Emissions standards if you move on get a low mileage used reliable model like the old Tundra. When you look at the amount of failures the other brands are having your choices are buy an older model. That being said in Toyotas History they have been good at finding the issues and fixing them. They have found out the Rod Bearing failures are due to machining particles not getting fully cleaned out. Hyandai/Kia had this issue big time with their Theta engines. I understand why you would want to bail though.
I like the 4 Runner and soon they will be Tacoma and Tundra quality which is crap. But I would have bought a Titan for a truck.
I traded in a ‘21 Tundra TRD Pro for a ‘22 Tundra Platinum hybrid. Most of my issues have been rattles here and there and thankfully nothing major. That said, I can’t say I completely trust this new platform yet and bought a ‘24 4Runner TRD Pro in December (also in Underground). I know the hybrids aren’t included in the recall yet but figure they will be eventually. I may end up selling the Tundra before values plummet even further. Too bad because it’s nicer in just about every way from the gen 2 platform… except reliability.
Feel sorry for you
Yeah… at least I have a decent backup if my engine blows in the Tundra.
Brother just traded in my 23 1794 for a 24 TRD pro 4 runner. Had to grab one of the last great vehicles ever made. Had to get out of the new Toyota trash.
Why not the Nissan frontier. It’s a newest model of trucks with a v6 and low maintenance. At this point I am seeing people jump on Nissan since they have good suv/trucks. Not including the sports since those are considered exotic to customers.
Nissan is solid
I had a Frontier prior to the Tundra. My favorite truck that I've owned. Needed more rear room.
@@ZetaDogProductions titan
Maybe we start thinking Nissan. The tundra is sissified. Not the truck a few years ago that looked tough and pulled that heavy load up the huge ramp. Right ?
what the hell is going on with Toyota lately? are they subcontracting their engineering to Hyundai or something?
The Tundra is why you don't buy into anything early.. Im not mad about it being a v6 twin turbo hybrid like some old head idiots.
Now they'd fix the quality control and maybe I can jump into a 2025 model.
With all those issues and you still considering buying another one......they love customers like you....
