  • In this video, I am hiking to the famous Malham Cove but using a route that (almost) nobody hikes up. The route in question is Gordale Scar, the steep and slippery nature of this route mean this is not for beginners.
This walk is amazing if you have walked up Malham Cove and not hiked this route, you need to try it. To finish off I had a spontaneous wild swim at Janet's foss waterfall which was the perfect way to end the walk.

Such a dramatic approach to Gordale Scar as the cliffs close in on either side. Tried to climb😄, but far too slippery and I was on my own. Definitely a place to go - should be on everyone's bucket list.

It's amazing at Gordale Scar, but you need to be so careful.

Yep, been up that route with my daughter who was 11 at the time and she nailed it...but it was brown pants time for me😁 Probably my favourite place in Yorkshire, Great video👍

It's a great route, the start is a bit sketchy though and I have to agree it's my favourite place in Yorkshire too.

I think that it must have changed over the years. Our whole family went up the waterfall when I was about 12, (in the late 1970s) including my mum and 11/9 year old sisters.
I last did it a couple of years ago after a few decades as a keen caver, and it seemed a non-trivial climb.
(I still want to have a really good try at the cave on the left at the top, but have never remembered to bring a good torch, or clothes I didn't need to wear the next day.)

It was definitely a bit trickier than I thought it would be, great fun though.

Unfortunately lots of people do this route, and that has made it more difficult by smoothing the rock and making it more slippery than it used to be. I'm 66 and have been going up the side of the waterfall since I was a teenager on a school trip, and I've seen it get worse. We were there a couple of days ago to try and get my son's girlfriend up it after a couple of previous failures. Sadly it was very wet so we didn't even attempt it, but we will be back :)
The first couple of steps at the bottom are the worst bit, after that it is straight forward I reckon. When we do the walk we do Janet's Foss on the way to Gordale

@@lightanddreamsphotography7140 Totally agree, the first part is by far the most difficult part. Good luck next time you go back, hopefully the weather will be on your side.

@@uptosummit_ Yes we are so determined to get her up it that next time we might wait for a nice day and drive up and down from Lincolnshire in one day. We've done it before that way.
