I have a passage where two wind parts are crossing- they're in independent rhythms and they cross in and out of each others registers a TAD. I used stem direction to make as clear as I could to see which part I want to play which, but should I put the "1." and "2." in there to make it extra clear? The nature of the rhythms and cross stemming makes it a LITTLE dense to read, but an experienced conductor or score reader might have to look twice, but I doubt it's so dense they can't figure it out in less than 15 seconds.

you might want to split into 2 staves then lol

If you have two of an instrument in an orchestra, but the second is doubling another instrument, would you still put them on the same staff?
For example, one staff for Clarinet 1,2 with an empty Bass Clarinet staff (hidden when its empty for a whole page), and then the first clarinet stays on that staff alone while the other part switches to the Bass Clarinet staff when they switch instruments?
Or would you just keep Clarinet 1 on one staff, and Clarinet 2/Bass Clarinet on the other, even when they're playing the B♭ clarinet?

At about 1:28, what's with the data warehouse / hadoop stuff? That's the crap I have to look at for my day job. :-)

Hi! A question: What is the preferred way of notating how many Instruments play on the same staff? I see you use 1, 2, but is notating instrument names with numeral first acceptable, like this: 2 Flutes, 4 Horns in F etc... Also, if notating 1, 2, should the margin say Instrument 1 only if one instrument is playng or Instrument 1, 2 even when only one plays? If so, this would require instrument name change on about every other page, from 1, 2 to 1, from 1 to 2 etc... So can the staff name be plural when only one is playing, marked 1. or 2. above the staff? Thanks.

There's different practices depending on publisher. I prefer to use things like "Flute 1, 2" and keep it constant throughout the whole score. That way the text object numerals can show which parts are on which staff rather than changing the left-hand margin so often. It is also good to just keep them consistent, conductors appreciate that.

Okay, thanks. Is there any way I could see some of your engravings of orchestral works? I would like to see their layout page-by-page, just for a good reference I could use.

So meaning: Staff name is e.g. Hn. 1, 2 even when say, only 1. is playing?

Like the touches of humour. I presume the flipping of the picture at 0:30 is intentional?

Charles Gaskell One is a picture of an orchestra, then the next is a picture of a band. Very intentional.

Min 2:21 that 1 to indicate the player that is playing should be roman number (I, II, III, etc)

Not necessarily. He covered that at 2:47.
