Let's be honest, most of these girls with the very expensive clothes and jewellery did not drop a cent of it themselves. Mommy and/or daddy dropped all that money. Often, these girls come from a long line of women who belonged to these sororities, and not only have to live up to everyone else in the sorority, but they are also upholding a family legacy.

In mine it was an agricultural women's fraternity so a lot of these women were in the same classes so they could easily help you out... Because it was ag focused, a lot of us had similar backgrounds and a lot of things in common too. Philanthropy wasn't our main focus, but we still did it often- like bingo night at the senior center, walking for cancer, and cleaning up highways (the K's were far more focused on Philanthropy)
I ultimately left because of a very anti trans discussion that rubbed me the wrong way and finances (not my president - she was awesome, but some of the other girls were a problem... I will mention that the main girl I had a problem with later said something on Facebook that was very hateful and several other women called her out including me and I got an apology email from our president apologizing for her behavior )

Same! My sorority I was in is seen on campus as the "ugly/weird/unwanted girls" but I loved it. My sorority was the most diverse in body size, skin color, interests, etc. Looking through the Instagram account, it was the only one that wasn't all skinny white blonde girls. While I am a skinny white blonde girl, I didn't want to be surrounded by that. I loved my time.
There were definitely still issues when it came to the expenses of being a member. Our yearly dues came out to around $1k, which paid for recruitment, administration fees to the organization, chapter events/programming, 2-3 shirts for our big events like recruitment/bid day/philanthropy events, and hosting 2 large philanthropy events to raise money for our organization. I was in Delta Gamma, so our philanthropy is Service for Sight and goes to support several different types of support for blind/visually impaired people. But if you couldn't afford your dues, there really wasn't much financial support offered. There were a handful of scholarships available through the organization to help pay tuition/housing, but no direct support for our dues. The leadership over my 3 years in changed pretty dramatically though to go from being super strict about all members attending everything with no exceptions, to widely expanding options for working women to be excused from events on a set schedule so that they can afford to be members without needing their parents to foot the bill. There was a huge realization that if we wanted the best, most talented, and passionate women, and we wanted to retain them, we needed to cut our dues as low as we could, and make as many exceptions to accommodate work schedules as possible.

Same! I'm in a sorority at a smaller women's university, so obviously there are some differences in campus culture, but everyone I've met through it has been wonderful, and the benefits really do outweigh the costs for me! Our campus is already a minority majority school, so the racism I see in a lot of these Bama rush videos didn't really apply, at least not nearly to that extent. I think sororities tend to get a bad rap, since so many of them aren't at all like the big schools you see on tiktok, and it honestly makes me a little sad that people generalize it so much

Unpop opinion: ALOT of the white or white adjacent girls I went to HS with joined some of these organizations to find good HUSBANDS later down the line. I used to be so envious of these girls & wished I was born on the same class as them. They did well in HS, got scholarships to college, lived the ultimate college life & ultimately married their HS bf or a guy they met in Uni.
90% if these girls lives were orchestrated for them by their moms /families to keep the lineage going. Most of them had NO desire to go to college or really even pursue a career because they were taught their main goal is to become a wife & amazing mom. When everything is said & done…they got their degrees in something un useful or geared towards being a trad-wife such as: teaching, or nursing (and I mean that respectfully). However, their husbands are like big Engineers, doctors, etc that they only met & had access to b/c of these & sorority life connections.
Literally all my white HS friends are married & are on baby #1 or #2 with their wealthy husbands and that’s the extent that these soror connections included. If you’re a low or middle class white woman, or a POC women, do not feel bad if you cant join these organizations.
They are geared to a very certain demographic & serve a VERY specific purpose that may not be aligned if you’re a woman chasing a major career path outside of wife & mother. Pay attention, 90% of the women look EXACTLY the same & there is very little diversity…that is done on purpose.

For me, I joined because I was a transfer student living off campus during the 2020 school year where we got screamed at for standing too close to another person in class, so it was impossible for me to make friends the "normal" way since I didn't have access to the dorms or my classmates in that way. The sorority allowed all members in the house even if they didn't live there, so I was able to actually make human connection during that wild time.
I also really wanted to get involved on campus and do service work, as at my first university, I was so broke and overwhelmed with full time work and full time school, I couldn't afford to set aside any time for anything except work and school. When I transferred, my financial burden was much lower, so it was important to me to get involved.

I didn't live on campus so I didn't have access to the dining hall (no meal plan) and I didn't have access to the dorms, so there was no where for me to go to hang out with people I did meet. It's definitely not the only option to make friends, or to participate in service involvement, but it's what was best for me and my situation to give me the opportunity for both. And it also gave me somewhere on campus that I could hang out with others indoors, because otherwise, there is really only outdoor spaces to socialize if you were a commuter student at my university during peak covid restrictions

I was lucky enough to have my parents fund my entire college education back in 2014-2018, and they REALLY wanted me to join a sorority, so in turn, I rushed. My normal style has always been band tees and very alternative, but my rush pictures portray a completely different person. Bright blonde hair, pastel poofy dresses and outfits, very natural makeup. I remember my mom spent SO much money on jewelry and outfits for me FOR RUSH to make sure I'd get a bid at the most popular sorority. Rushing is really just a plethora of superficial conversations where you can tell the girls are judging if they vibe with you and what you're wearing and what you look like. I got the bid for that sorority, joined it, and I remember the second thing we did on initiation day/night (after walking through a house draped in white fabric floor to ceiling, wearing only white and doing that whole ceremony) was going down to this area where we learned "chants" that shit on all the other sororities. Specifically, less popular ones. Now, it's obviously not allowed to publicly shit on the other sororities, so we'd have a specific clapping rhythm for each song, that way we could do it in public without saying anything. There's a lot more stuff, of course, but I feel like that gives you a good picture of what it's like.

My best friend went through Bama Rush for the hell of it. A big sorority did a painting social and my friend cleaned her paintbrush off in the big bowl of lemonade 🤣 she didn't get a bid for that sorority. I was in a tiny sorority at a tiny college. I dropped out because it was so boring and I'm not a girly girl. My sorority didn't want you to post pictures drinking or have anything in the background. You have to go to the house and study on a weekly schedule or pay a fine if you don't go. You had to buy a present for your big sister, your secret sister and your fraternity brother for every single fraternity. The money you spent was insane, and that was just my experience at a little tiny school. I believe I had to pay $500 just to leave the sorority.

Crazy to see these girls dancing/strolling together talking about sisterhood, meanwhile they were forced to fight, water boarded, forced to stay up, degrading and humiliating themselves, and so much worse…I was always creeped out by sororities, but i always been the type to not fall into peer pressure, so the idea of someone telling me to do something crazy that i dont want to do, im not gonna do it just to get into a community. That you also have to pay for !! Paying to get your ahhh beat and call those same girls “sisters” My mom went to join one in the 70s, they said she had to put a bunch of crazy stuff in her hair for the first phase of hazing, my mom said absolutely th not. She was also at VA Tech when a boy died in a river by the school while being hazed… which happens more than youb think…Its also demonic, but thats a whole nother convo in itself. Its the main reason why my friend denounced. But just think about it, everyone go up in arms when ice spice made the devil horn symbol with her hand, but no one bats an eye when a specific sorority uses it!

I went to a large southern state school, I was a frat sweetheart on the composite and everything, dated the president of a frat, went to all their events… as a girl who wasn’t in Greek life.
I didn’t join a sorority because I didn’t dress like them or enjoy the same hobbies as a typical sorority member. I never did well holding on to groups of girlfriends (only had one or two close friends for years), and I wasn’t social/ charismatic in the ways those girls usually are. On paper, I was (maybe still am) a total “I’m not like other girls”- I like gross humor, I loved the frat UFC watching parties, I played magic the gathering and DnD, I liked tv shows that, while I know girls in general watch them too, the majority of the audience is male. I got along better with males all my life, being the first girl in my generation on both sides of my family.
But I never flaunted my interests as if I was superior to the sorority girls. I never shit on them for their interests. And a lot times I wanted the type female friendships they had, but was always too nervous to ever try to get my foot in the door with making friends. They intimidated me, because I was insecure of myself and they appeared perfect to me.
In my experience, I’ve had a small number of girls treat me with that passive aggressive “mean girl” niceness, but I’ve met plenty of sorority girls that were just about as sweet as a damn cavity. I mean I met MULTIPLE girls at these events that were absolutely the type to brighten up a room just by walking in it, who were so fun, happy, and wanting to include others- just textbook extroverts with hearts of gold.
The organized dances, the rules, the politics, the PRICE, was, and still is a huge turn off for me. If I ever have a daughter, I really would prefer she didn’t get into Greek life period (I saw a lot of behind the scenes stuff and experienced quite a few scary situations as a direct result of Greek life groups), but I do completely understand why girls still find it fun and desirable. Especially the poor, insecure girls looking for community in an ever distant society. So many of them are kind hearted and well meaning, it’s the few bad apples that turn this community into a contest of the different tiers of houses, the status with the money and clothes, and the absolutely ridiculous expectations.
I don’t like sororities, but sorority girls are some of the kindest and beautiful (inside and out) people I have ever met.

Out of all sororities on campus, we were the most diverse, the most accepting of queer and non-binary students (almost all of us were a part of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community). I was sisterhood chair and from what I saw of other orgs we were actually close with each other and friends. We were a small group (~15-20 actives at one time) but I truly felt loved, supported and accepted. I can’t talk for other sororities but from my experience with my sisters, it was amazing and I didn’t have to break my bank to impress them. I legit just had to be myself and make friends. I think that’s what a sorority should be and something that’s been lost admis the desire to show a better status than others.

Umm my mom, aunts, etc are all Howard legacies. The D9 is JUST as problematic just in different ways. The AKAs still very much so have a colorism issue and still “discreetly” choose their girls based off if they could pass a brown paper bag test. They try to make it seem like they’re not by ALSO accepting darker-skinned women, but those girl are VERY & I mean VERY pretty & feminine. I’m talking lacefront always laid & flawless makeup everytime they go to class or events & dressed to a T!
There is a running, unspoken joke that most of the Deltas are just girls who weren’t “pretty or light enough” to be an AKA…it’s really disheartening. And it’s not just the girls, there’s competition amongst the men too especially between the Kappas & Q’s. I know several men who were branded but made it seem like their branding was personal like a tattoo instead of fraternity related.
A lot of them still haze underground. I’m in the military with a lot of the men and you’d be surprised how many of them are super loyal to their frats but have severe PTSD from their time during initiation & rush. It’s the same BS but on different levels. I think there is just an air of “I’m better than you” regardless if you’re a white or black sorority or fraternity.

These examples are the big mainstream schools and I can’t speak on that experience. My school was a CSU in California with 10,000 students, we had: 3 National sororities, 2/3 national fraternities (one left campus due to low numbers), and multiple multicultural sororities & fraternities. Highest member national sorority size at our school while I was in Greek life was 55 girls. I never saw myself joining a sorority and it took going online and moving away due to Covid for me to join because I wanted that community and friendship. I felt very disconnected from my college and being in the sorority during the online portion of lockdown allowed me to create real bonds with my sisters and then get to have all these friends waiting for me once campus opened back up. My sorority was very very inclusive and so were the other ones on campus! Since we didn’t have houses and much smaller scale events, we had much lower dues. Dues always decrease with time in chapter, mine went from 300$ a month to 95$ a month by my third year in chapter. My mom did pay for half of three payments (helped until i found a job), after that all dues and sorority expenses were on my dime. All of our events, outfits, etc. we had to put the money in or get donations from alumni to pay for because all money we fundraised had to go to our philanthropies, which is what it’s about at the end of the day. For our sorority we always looked for girls who wanted to progress in life, had goals and aspirations, or we saw having a future benefiting the sorority. I’m not saying my experience was perfect, there were definitely moments of frustration and tears shed, but I genuinely enjoyed my time and I don’t think I would’ve been able to make it through college so well without the girls I had with me and the routine sorority gave me. The experiences and memories being in a sorority were very much worth the cost aspect, because I wouldn’t of done any of the things I cherish most about college, like competing and winning our main fraternity on campus’s sweetheart challenge. I got to learn so much about another organization and earn money for their philanthropy, while competing in silly games and making amazing bonds with the boys in the frat. The biggest thing we said in my sorority was “what you put in, is what you get out” 💙 forever an AXID girl, t.f.j 💛

I find these so amusing because I was in a sorority at a really small uni & my experience was the complete opposite. Rush for me was genuinely very chill, nothing crazy; one of the events I attended was literally just walking around a farmer’s market with an active of a random chapter. We also had no houses, so that helped too. It really just felt like another club on campus to me lmao. But I also recognize that the big state schools are another level & I think social media continues to highlight the negatives of Greek life. There are positive aspects to being apart of it & I wish chapters would focus on pushing their philanthropy rather than another ootd video.

i work at a popular discount store and a lot of people buy the van clerf knock off and it look very similar to the $15000 (or whatever the price was) earrings. im not saying the girl in the video did that but a lot of people buy the dupe when it's at my store and show it off as the real deal.

The ideal person for sororities is sadly not new. I pledged in 1994 at UNLV. The girls who got bids were almost all- white, thin, Californian, and elementary education majors. The only difference is social media is bringing attention to the dirty secrets of rush.

I was an active in my sorority from 2015-2017 at a smaller school. Overall I really enjoyed the experience and it gave me a lot of self esteem and connection that I needed in college. I understand that my experience is not the norm. I don't like what Greek life has become - especially the focus on social media and now brand deals!?? That's wild to me.

In Europe we have something similar, but usually mixed gender and very elitist as well, in the European, ‘my father is friends with the king’ way. A while ago, a student of colour died during initiation. Many of the male subgroups within them have some scandals, such as making lists of all female students they concider whores and posting them, chorussing ‘no is yes’ at a party etc. I once went to a party at one where I was told not to wear red pants because that means as a girl you will be taken to a red room where you are basically free real estate for the guys. They would often tell first years to wear red pants, so they wouldn’t know what it signified…

i will say it’s not like this everywhere. i go to a small university in virginia and we have 6 sororities. there’s like 20-30 girls in them and they don’t do these things. they aren’t sponsored and they don’t do rush. it’s just a very chill & low key recruitment week. they don’t base your membership off looks, money, or your name. i’m so thankful it’s not horrible everywhere (i’m not in greek life so this is an unbiased comment)

I had a roommate in a fraternity last year and his entire TikTok feed the whole year was just different things tied to the frat. He also had to wear a suit jacket and a very specific tie most of the time, was never home before 1 am, was constantly worn out when he WAS in the apartment, and would go to the gym in our complex like 30 minutes after getting home.
I wish him luck as he lives with some of his frat brothers this year.

I can now understand why many people chose not to rush. What I personally observe from videos like these on this topic is that unless you are a blonde, slim bodied, able bodied, white woman who comes from a family that has money…you really don’t stand a chance. Where are women who aren’t white nor blonde in these sorority videos? See what I mean?
Personally…I truly wonder what people really get out of sororities and fraternities except for the fact maybe saying you look a certain way and have money…if it’s really truly about sisterhood or brotherhood and getting to know people…then that can surely be done in so many other ways like common interests, other clubs and gatherings…etc. I think people tend to find someone who you truly would develop meaningful and genuine relationships/friendships with through something you really enjoy doing like hobby or a cause or career that you care about than through fraternities and sororities…

From a UK perspective I cannot tell you how sick and positively dystopian this whole subject is. Nothing about education. All about looks. Everyone looks like the stepoed out of the Barbie movie, not as actors but actual characters. Really this is just mind blowing. What's wrong with the parents of these kids.

This is the absolute extreme of sorority rush. It is wild to watch! I came from a small liberal arts college, and while we had rush, it was so low key. No choreographed dances. No expensive outfits. I’m also not sure if sponsorships are allowed. The Panhellenic Council oversees all sorority recruitment and each college has their own chapter. It’d be interesting to know if they have rules against it.

This is so interesting to hear your perspective, & read the comments. I was Vice President of Membership for my sorority during my collegiate years, meaning I ran Recruitment. Part of that included me choosing our Recruitment outfits (we all matched, except the final night). This was 20 years ago, so social media was not a part of our Recruitment. My school had 6 sororities, & one definitely had the “rich girls only” vibe. They were predominantly thin white blonde girls, had the highest gpa requirement (there are different gpa requirements to join each sorority), the highest dues, & during Recruitment, they asked my friend about what her dad did for a living & how much he made 😅 My sorority had people from all walks of life - different races, ethnicities, weight classes, socioeconomic classes, etc. There was a monthly “fee” (dues), weekly meetings, & rules you had to adhere to. Someone in another comment mentioned not being allowed to post anything with alcohol, & same. Girls under 21 would get in trouble (& have to go to Standards Committee) if found posting anything with alcohol. Obviously, no drugs or excessive partying, as we do represent the sorority. We also were not allowed to be at fraternity houses past 2am. (Which is when bars typically close) Facebook became a thing when I was in college. It would be interesting to be in college now with social media being what it is. Facebook was brand new, & MySpace on its way out. But it was so different back then.
& yes, there are things we are not supposed to talk about. Anything that is “Ritual”. Someone else commented her friend wouldn’t tell her or her mom certain things. As she shouldn’t have. It’s not like we’re drinking each others blood or anything crazy 😂 but I guess some people find it strange. 🤷🏽‍♀️ to each their own
Overall, I loved sorority. I still consider myself a sorority woman, & have been active in local alumna chapters. Some of my best friends, I met in sorority.. one being my Lil Sis. & yes, you do have to buy your Big & Lil Sis presents, as someone mentioned, but it sounds crazier than it is (to me). We had a Big/Lil Sis reveal week… we each made each other presents. I made her a different present every day, including a photo album, a pillow, a clipboard.. she made me a Brick & a paddle. I wish I could attach pictures because all 4 of my paddles are absolutely GORGEOUS!
Anyway, thank you for the video. I appreciate hearing different perspectives, & seeing what it’s like at different schools in a different time

Based on your comment I am assuming that we were likely active around the same time, about 20 years ago :D Seem so wild now! I feel like we had a similar experience and I should look up my local Alumni chapter and get involved again. The Big/Little reveal and initiation week were some of the most fun, making and gifting presents for each other. We only got one paddle, from our Big for an initiation gift, but I still have mine on the wall in my office! :)
My favorite event was always Homecoming because it was always around Halloween and I love pomping and making the float for the parade. Seriously, some of the best memories and you're right, I get that ritual can seem odd/scary/weird, but it's not any of that to me, just a set of secrets I hold with thousands of other women across the nation. :D To each their own is a great way to put it.

I will say - as far as the outfits go, even at my small midwestern state university, we were required to buy work week and recruitment clothes from certain stores and links were provided up to like... 5 months in advance so you had time to space it out! We were really good though about getting items girls could reuse for years to come and I definitely did!

My paternal grandmother and my mom were both part of the same sorority, which would have made me a 3rd generation legacy. When i started undergrad, one member spoke with me once before rush and that was it, no effort to convince me to rush or anything (which is fine). I am a bigger person.
My stepsister on my dad's side's only connection is through his mom (her stepgrandma). She is very conventionally attractive. When she started undergrad, that same sorority tried so hard to recruit her as a legacy. The same with my own roommate in undergrad whose mom had been a member.

THANK YOU for doing this video. When I was in College I tried to pledge two different sororities (not straight Greek); One was a music sorority Mu Phi Epsilon, and the other was a Catholic sorority (can't recall their letters right now, that was 22 years ago) but I was not accepted into either. And these were not big Greek ones. I have never been rich, nor have I ever been traditionally pretty and I have never been skinny/ slim. So back then, even at the school I was at with the different types of sororities we had, it was still very much about fitting in with certain people and looks, etc.

As someone who “rushed” and was active in my sorority my 4 years of college (2009-2013), I am SO SO SO SO glad that social media wasn’t near like it is now. If I had to use TikTok/snapchat/etc to promote myself, I’d have quit. Facebook was bad enough lol
Luckily, mine was a chapter of a Panhellenic sorority that was way more laid back, and we didn’t have to go out and spend $$$$$ to look the part (and yes, we stood out at events with other chapters of our sorority lol)
Edit to add: letter shirts were the most expensive thing we were encouraged to buy, although we made ours more than spending $40 or so on a tshirt

I also fully acknowledge and agree that some people have an awesome time being in a sorority and truly feel a close connection to the other members BUT the same could be said about MLMs. What matters (in my opinion) is the system itself is not designed for the individual to be successful/happy necessary. It's designed for the organization to have clout and money and status

I actually know a girl from my old high school who I graduated with who went upstate (we’re from Long Island NY) for college, and joined a sorority. She also came from a very well off family….both parents in real estate, and she as well as her siblings were all athletes at least in high school and have always had a lot of money. I think when it comes to these girls having money within their families, and being gifted these accessories….the whole “mommy and daddy’s money” can be hard, because even if their parents did pay for them to have those luxurious items….that’s not the girls’ faults. Most of them never asked to be raised rich they were just brought up into it and for the ones who’ve always remained humble about their upbringings, and how much money they have…..they shouldn’t be “judged” as much. I try to see it as “them having money doesn’t directly and personally affect me, because they don’t know me. Their lives don’t personally and affect me, them having more money than me isn’t their faults it’s based on society as well as our government.”

So many sororities are copying the DCC Thunderstruck dance in their intro videos. It drives me nuts. As a former competitive gymnast, cheerleader and dancer, be original. Please. We see it every year and I think it’s unoriginal.
Listening to them talking about being demure while wearing a cocktail dress in the daytime is wild. At least I assume it’s daytime.
I rushed years ago at the University of Washington. It’s nothing like Bama Rush. Even now it’s not like that. I ended up moving to Germany to go to college, so I never joined a sorority. That was more of my dad’s dream for me than my own dream. That’s part of the reason I decided to take the opportunity to be an au pair and study abroad, but I am a Husky at heart. 💜 💛

I'm a sorority alum, I absolutely loved my time living in the house and out of house with other sisters, and I'm still friends with many of the girls in my own pledge class and the classes before and after mine. My experience was SO different from all of these discussed in this video. I didn't have any connections to any of the houses, I had zero recommendations, myself and my family are not rich/do not wear designer anything, I'm a curvy gal and had curly brown hair, and I still got invited into a very well respected house. The house I was in was always part of the top 3 houses on campus. There were 14 sorority houses at my University. I am a very personable person and my grades were fantastic and extracurriculars were mid to low compared to other classmates. (I had to support myself so I had a part-time job since I was old enough to work, it took up time for extracurriculars.)
I was active in the 2000s, and I don't know how different it is now at my school, but it was not in the South like Bama. The sponsorships you addressed in your video is WILD. We would have gotten in SO much trouble for that, like fines and threats of losing our charter depending on the severity. You nailed it when you said sponsorships create uneven playing field, and that's exactly why they weren't allowed. I'm so glad TikTok wasn't a thing back then, and Facebook was "The Facebook" and it opened up for my Univ after Sorority Rush already happened for me. During my time I was the Song Leader for one year and I served as our Recruitment Chair for 2 years. We did have different themes/colors everyday but we never had to all buy exact matching anything. We wanted people to be comfortable and show how they interpret the theme/color.
I would not be surprised if there is some sort of fine in place from the National Panhellenic Council for houses taking sponsorships, but these sororities are probably just putting out the content and then paying the fine. Once the toothpaste has been squeezed out of the tube it's nearly impossible to get it back in... so to speak. And if they are spending tens of thousands of dollars on outfits for Rush, then I would bet money to pay a fine is no issue and they likely have super rich Alumni donors. Or maybe the rules are different now? This is all just speculation on my part, I haven't been actively participating as an Alum for my house for years, no particular reason but I just moved cities and life happened. If they reached out and asked me to help with something would gladly help however I could.
