Hot glue is what is normally used to seal the plug. You could use sealing caulk, however, if you ever need to repair it again you will not be able to disassemble it easily. With hot glue you can reopen it with just a hair dryer and or razor knife.
Hi, I have a globe similar to this. Hubby has taken it apart, and some parts are broken. Is there any way you can look at it to see if it's fixable? Sentimental to my mother in law.
Hi. We are not in a position to take on any outside work at this time. If you send some pictures we can take a look and see if we can provide any advice. If you need someone to fix it we can provide links to three companies that repair snow globes. You can send the pics to tespi74@gmail.com
I was so lucky that I found this same snow globe and in the same despair. I have only one problem the rubber gasket has a small leak. I hot glued it and air over time comes in. I shake the globe and no obvious leaks but if i push slightly in the middle water drips out in different places. Do you use silicone adhesive around the rim of the rubber gasket to seal the water in? If you do, please let me know, I have 2 globes with this problem. Can't wait to finish this project. Thank for the video's and all the help.
We have had issues with damaged stoppers that we were able to fix with a combination of super glue and hot glue. However, we normally replace the stopper if it is damaged. The problem is finding stoppers. We found a couple of companies that sell replacement globes that come with stoppers but not the stoppers themselves. We get all of our replacement parts by taking apart other old globes and reusing the parts. If the stopper is leaking around that edges when it meets the glass, try putting a good layer of hot glue around the stopper overlapping where the stopper and globe meet. This can help keep it from leaking. We do not use silicone adhesive, however, it would probably work. The only drawback is that if you ever need to open that globe up again later on you may have a problem getting past the adhesive. Hot glue can be softened with heat. You can't do that with silicone adhesive. Good luck!
I broke the arm on a figurine when I was replacing the water the other day. What glue did you use in the video? Is it similar to Crazy Glue/Gorilla Glue? Do you know if Crazy Glue/Gorilla Glue would hold up in water?
Hi. Crazy Glue and Gorilla Glue work fine. We used both of those for a while. However, based on a recommendation from National Artcraft we now use Zap-A-Gap.
Thank you for the great comment. We have a lot of videos on our channel showing repairs of different types of snow globes with many different issues. Let us know what issues you are facing and we can point you to one of our videos that may help.
The first snow globe that we repaired came out perfect even though we had never done it before. It's not as difficult as you think. Watch some of the videos and have an assistant to help on the first one or two. Here is an idea; find a couple of old used snow globes at the thrift store, or garage sale, or flea market. We find them all the time for $2 to $5. You can practice on those globes and then repair the important ones once you feel comfortable with it. Let us know if you have any questions and let us know how it turns out. Here are a couple of our videos that may help: Ep. 3 - The Snow Globe Repair Kit (th-cam.com/video/43RVYhHdcso/w-d-xo.html) Ep. 32 - Globe additive comparison (th-cam.com/video/cjyn_3wFXDc/w-d-xo.html)
This channel has great informative videos, no need to put music in your videos, but regardless very interesting anyway to watch. As somebody who collects Snow globes, i find Snow globe repairs fascinating. I have a few that has dark water but works fine. But still interesting to watch. Very underrated channel.
We are happy that you enjoy the content on our channel and we appreciate you taking the time to let us know. Hopefully we will hear from you on future videos.
So do you have a store? Do you do this as a paid hobby? I have one that need some TLC. Would prefer someone experienced/professional before I attempt it. The re-paint is beautifully done, too.
This is a hobby that we do out of our apartment. We are not currently set up to do business. We hope to be in that position in the near future. You may surprise yourself, you can fix that snow globe. We have a Snow Globe Repair Video playlist that contains all of the repairs we have done. You can look through the thumbnails and see if you spot a globe similar to yours and then you can watch the video to see how we fixed it. There are a lot of techniques demonstrated across the videos. Check out Episode 3 to see a review of the tools and materials we use. These days we use the syringe occasionally to remove the air bubble but for most globes we use the water submersion method. You can see an example in Episode 201. This method works with the globe in or out of the base. Check out Episode 32 to see a comparison of the snow globe liquid options. Since the time of that video we now use 32% clear glue for all globes. We are happy to answer any questions. Let us know if you still want to find someone to fix it for you and we can provide you links to some snow globe repair companies. Good luck!
Hi just wondering how the Krylon finishing spray held up on this project. I recently repainted a globe figurine but brushed on layers of a liquid varnish to seal it. Turns out it wasn’t the best idea cause my figurine looks really white and foggy in the water. Did the Krylon short cuts work any better for you guys? Is the figurine nice and shiny and protected? Thanks!
We repaired this snow globe over a year ago and today it looks exactly the way it did when we first fixed it. We had a snow globe that where we used a clear coat on the figurine and over time it turned cloudy to the point where you could no longer see the figurine. We use water proofing spray now which works better.
Looks fantastic. The new colors are so shiny and looks nice compared to the color outside. Nice job with the musicbox. I would be so scared to fixed that. Everything worked out perfet. Maybe a little bit clearcoat on the outside would brought back the shine but i don´t know. Is this plaster the base and the inside or what material is that? Nice video. See you in the next one.
Hi. Yes the new paint did make a difference and over a year later it still looks good. We're not sure what the base is made of but it looks like it is ceramic, possibly plaster. Thanks for the comment
I have the exact red coke-a-cola globe as the one at the beginning of your video... How do I remove the globe to repair the Santa inside the globe that has come loose and it laying on it's side? I have the base with the revolving train already removed, but can't get the globe off from the inner base that is connected to the globe.
Hello. I have found your videos to be very helpful. I have a snowglobe which has 3 parts in the shape of a Christmas tree. The top part with the globe broke (the glass dome), so in an effort of pry it off, I pulled too hard on the middle part which has a music box and now the music box does not wind, however it is not broken. I cannot seem to detach the music box from the base of the tree (the third section.) Rather than having a key to wind which would be simple, the shaft to which a key would attach is attached somehow in the base of the figurine. In other words, the base acts as the key and I cannot separate the base from the music box. Is there be a way to send you a picture so you could possibly make a recommendation as to how to fix this? The only thing I can think of is to drill through the base of the figurine. The entire piece is made of resin. Thank you for any helpful suggestions.
I believe we have one that sounds like the one you are describing, however, we have never worked on one of that type. We received a snow globe from a subscriber in Episode 125 that sounds like the one you are describing. Take a look and see if they are similar. You can click the Email link in the About section of our channels home page and send some pictures. We'll look at them and see if we can think of something.
All of that paint came off when we washed the figurine. We used a soft brush and dish soap and a bunch of the paint just flaked off. A lot of the paint was loose when we go the figurine out of the globe.
It is probably because it is a large figurine that is in two pieces. We can imagine that if it is not glued down securely it will eventually work its way loose. It is probably happening to most of these globes.
Hi. We use the Gorilla Glue hot glue sticks to seal the stopper and attach the globe to the base. We use Zap-A-Gap to attach the figurine to the stopper. We also use Krazy Glue and Gorilla Glue. They all work. We use Elmer's clear glue in the globe water to slow down the glitter. You can also use Glycerine. Both of those are optional as you can also use plain water if you prefer. We use filtered water with a little alcohol to prevent any algae or bacteria growth. We use a tablespoon of alcohol in a gallon of water. So far no issues. You can check out Episode 32 th-cam.com/video/cjyn_3wFXDc/w-d-xo.html where we compare the different substances that you can add to the water or use instead of water. You can also check out Episode 3 th-cam.com/video/43RVYhHdcso/w-d-xo.html where we show you the tools and materials that we use. We hope that helps!
Sorry it took so long to reply. Make sure the carousel is not rubbing against the inside of the base. Try a couple of drops of oil in the gears of the of the music box mechanism.
Hi. We repaired that globe almost a year ago. I just took a look at it and it looks the same as it did the day we repaired it. The Testors model paint seems to do well in snow globe water.
If you are referring to the rubber piece that the figurine is mounted on in the globe, some people call that a stopper and others refer to is as a plug. We get replacement stoppers from other globe that we have in storage, however, can buy them online. We have several link in the video description to companies that sell snow globe parts.
Sorry to hear that, however, the good news is you know how to fix them now. I know you have watched at least one video. If you haven't already done so I would suggest watching Ep. What do you do when the plug doesn't 100% seal any longer? Use a sealant caulk?
