I can just about work an air fryer so a lathe would be a rather odd talking point in the lounge 😂
I was going to buy a new lathe but got a air fryer now I make chicken wings and work on my bikes
@@louadams4942 Mafia boss level air fryer use 😂
I bought a cheap Chinese mini lathe for making spacers and other small parts. I had to make a lot of adjustments and modifications straight out of the box to make it as accurate as possible and for what I use it for. It works pretty well, and it doesn't take up that much space. If you're looking for a high precision tool, this is not the lathe, but for spacers, it works great.
Couple years ago I realized I watch this channel not so much for the motorcycle content, but because you guys always make me feel better about life in general. You don’t have to be elevating a bike for the content to be uplifting. Thank you.
Thank you so much Guy for such kind words of support and encouragement, it's wonderful to know that we can lend a little moral support whilst passing on a few bike tricks... stay well and enjoy your weekend mate.
My sentiments exactly! l'll end up making a separate comment but you've nailed exactly a big reason I love Del's videos.
@@jameswilliams4775 Bless!
@@jameswilliams4775 Thanks James, much appreciated, it's a lot of work and knowing it's appreciated makes it all worthwhile!
Still on my list of tools to obtain, just need to make room. Yeah, we were lucky to have metal shop when I was in high school and I was able to use a lathe amongst other tools. I still have the little metal hammer I made. That was over 40 years ago too! We also had a work experience class, where instead of taking physical education, you got to go learn a trade. I got to take a motorcycle mechanics class back then too. Oh yeah, a welder is on the list as well, a lathe will be first though, I've had a need for a lathe more than the need for a welder.
You're dead right there Sir, we were the lucky generation to have a metal shop at school, not just that but our school had a wood shop and a pottery class as well, hand skills were more valued back then I guess!
You should make a cover for it or buy a small motorbike cover which might work.
Thank you Delboy
This is my first time commenting on your excellent TH-cam channel. I am old enough and lucky enough to have had Metal Shop and Auto Shop in high school. These programs should, IMO, be protected in the school systems along with art and music. I have been wanting a lathe for a long time and eventually my budget will allow. Thank you for steering me toward Joe Pie. I'll check him out. Big thank you and if I may, shout out to Jonny Cactus there in the UK and Bill Wheeler of Wheelhouse Garage here in the US. I am so appreciative of you guys for teaching and entertaining. Now I'll go to your website to find schwag!
Hi Tom, great to hear from a kindred spirit, I think we all need to consider ourselves lucky to be our generation where schools took the time to teach practical skills... not everyone's academic and it gave those of us with practical hands an opportunity to flourish... and even more sadly I think the same can be said for music in today's schools... probably reflected in the fact that modern pop music is pretty much a joke these days, no bands forming and becoming iconic anymore... Thank you again so much for your kind support on Patreon, and good luck with the lathe, and have fun with it!
I did metalwork at school and would love to have a lathe in the garage. Only 3 problems,
1. I left school in 1971 and haven't touched a lathe since.
2. Don't have room in the garage.
3. The wife won't let me 😂
I left in 81 and hadn't used one since.. but half hour turning handles, it all made sense, and with the online content aimed at teaching such things, it will soon come back to you mate... plus the little bench top ones take up no more room than a tool box... (But sadly can't help you with The Wife though..lol!!)
2 minutes in and just amazed at this guys passion for doing a job the right way. The world needs more people like this.
The Outtakes was a great idea, you should do it on all of your video's. Fluffing lines , dropping stuff , loosing your 10mm socket.
School always used to teach SO much ! 👍🏻🤠🇺🇸
Somthing very soothing about watching a lathe in operation!
You, I and every other career mechanic out there can always justify getting another tool. Budget, shop space and a rational spouse usually keep us under control though. 😁 In your line of custom fab work a lathe is practically a must have. The care you give the machine is so nice to see also. Loved the chuck key out takes. How did Penny not bust out laughing when filming that ? I look forward to every visit with the two of you. Peace and Blessings. ❤👍👍
Hey Rick, hope you're well! Glad you enjoyed the little fun at the end of the video, must be getting old lol Thank you so much for your kind words of support and encouragement, we truly appreciate it, enjoy your weekend there, keep safe, D&Px
Definitely, yes.😊 Plus, I have made myself a small foundry where i can melt aluminum to sand cast my metal blanks. I have found the plans in Dave Gingery books. I would say as well that a small milling machine is the logical complement of a lathe.
Excellent video Del & Penny. You are so right about a lathe, It's on my list, I am luckily i have a mate 1Km down the road that has a lathe, so not too bad to get something knocked up. But now we talk about a milling machine LOL. Penny and you have a great weekend and hope the weather is getting better over your side. It's 37C today and 43C tomorrow, no riding this. Cheers
Ah great to have a mate who can help out! Weather all over the place here, one day freezing cold, the next warm and raining, grey and overcast here today, so we get out regardless... longing for those sunny days though! Sounds like it's too hot to ride there, so stay cool! D&Px
I've always wanted a lathe… space is the only issue I have. Every machine I have is on stands that I weld and build. I only have a 2-car garage with 7 feet ceiling. I have a friend who owns a machine shop and does work for me when I need something. I wish I had something on hand as he's gone fishing! Lol, I wasn't able to find a decent used lathe like yours. I'm still 👀!!!!
Sure thing, I've been looking for a decent second hand Bridgeport or Monarch for many years, they're just not out there... maybe a Myford, but they're more expensive than a new one of these! It's always a big expense, but like they say, long after the price is forgetton the value remains...
Pray hard! God may provide!! 😊
They all went to India in the 1970's / 1980's and still working more than likely today.
Both my grandad and my uncle were engineers.
Grandad worked at Supermarine on the spitfire, and my uncle worked for Mr. Kipling, keeping all those fancies coming 😊
Dad worked in ultrasonics in the testing side of things such as welds under the sea and oil rigs.
The closest that I ever got to making a spacer was for my rat bike by welding a load of washers together and then smoothing them down with my grinder 😅
Love the dialogue, Del 😊
Now that sounds like finest rettification there mate.. welding up a stack of washers.. it aint wring if it works aye.! Great to have inspiration from those we love too .. Take care and have a blessed weekend, and stay safe. !
Great video! Seems like it would come in handy to have a lathe.....I have a machinist that makes me wheel spacers & crush tubes whenever I need them, but it sucks going back & forth from your garage to the machinist.
Hi Del, hope you're well and practicing your chuck key tossing. :) Nice wee lathe you got there, and ideal for all those little jobs on the bikes. If you like machining check out Cutting Edge Engineering. Thanks for sharing. Stay safe and keep up the good work.
Thanks buddy, I know Cutting Edge, great content like so many of the pros that share their wonderful knowledge, same as Joe Pie... stay well and have a fab weekend mate!
Oh if only I had the room. Back in the late 60s I worked in a machine shop for a couple of weeks helping machine setters. I can only just fit my Sport Glide into my w/shop. Great video as always Del. My w/end always starts with a visit to your workshop. Have a great one.
Thanks buddy, that's so kind... it's a great honour to know that we fill a part of your life that's important... enjoy your weekend fellah, ride safe and stay in touch!
A subscription to Joe Pie should be compulsory, for anybody considering their first lathe!
I totally agree..
One of your first videos I watched was you making a set of bar ends on the lathe and I've been hooked every since. You've inspired me to use my imagination and think out of the box on my own motorcycle repairs and upgrades. Barely a motorcycle in the video and I loved it just the same! Thank you!
Thanks James, am glad you enjoyed it, and we really appreciate that you've been watching such a long time! Take care and have a great weekend.
I also keep a large box of liquorice all sorts, I usually find something for the job. Not necessarily pretty though!
Great video Del, I got hooked on lathe work 40 years ago, and have never regretted buying an expensive lathe just for mucking about. Nice work, enjoyed!
Great to hear from a kindred spirit mate.. they're not cheap, but them most people would spend more on a holiday..! !
Never did metalwork at school, but I did do carpentry. I would love a lathe, but better still have you to pop in and use yours!! Another great video and the outtakes were awesome :)
Thanks mate, glad you enjoyed it!
Cool little project there Del. I would absolutely love to have a lathe like yours. Would be so handy to have. Thanks for sharing
Hiya Penny and Del. Great video! A lathe is certainly on my wish list. Anything of the size I want seems a little out of reach... I might opt for a mini lathe instead. It's been great seeing you develop skill on yours over the years! Take care, dear friends. Be well and ride safe.
That would still be fine, a mini lathe could stil make pretty much anything I make on this one, and if you set them up right they're pretty accurate as well! Take care and have a wonderful week and, as always, thank you for your support, D&Px
That poor Chuck key.
Would I like a Lathe? Yeah probably. Good for “just in case.”
Would I use one? Prolly not a lot now I’ve finished my restorations on my old bikes.
I have used them to turn down drill shanks to fit my drill chucks. I’ve made new bolts/ screws and spacers. And other piddling bits. Plus they’re helpful to polish stuff you can stick in the jaws.
Do I have room for one? Hell no. My house has already exceeded its SWL three time over. And my Wife already moans about our garage being filled with bikes and bike related stuff.
Hang on... you turn down drill bit shanks?... that'd be useful,. i presume HSS as you can't machine Carbide....what cutting tool do you use for that ?
Dunno. I can’t remember what it was. I know it was a HSS bit. Basically I just used the cutting tool that was in the lathe .
Sorry.@@Moonfleet41
Love a lathe but no room. What about a cover for it would it be easier 👍
Would still need to oil and prep it before use anyway..
And a milling machine, game changer
I would LOVE a Lathe, but I simply wouldn't use it enough. I will have to make do with a drill, some files, and a pocket full of washers!
I thought that, deliberated over it for years.. until i got it, and haven't stopped using it since..!
I Still remember the names of my old metalwork teachers , Mr. Coulson and Mr. Crownshaw , 50 years on. You never forget the name of a good teacher. Keep 'em comin' owd son
Nor a bad one either aye mate..? Thanks for your kind support as always..
Why not make some sort of canvas cover or metal lid to protect against unwanted dust and debris getting into your lathe workings ?
It's always important to give it a clean down before use, even if it's been covered, but perhaps I'll get round to that for sure!
Great informative Video as always, I liked that you learnt metalwork at school as I did, but unfortunately possibly before you were born, and working in textile maintenance had my own machinist ( Tommy god bless him) so I never progressed ,but watched you from your early days so your'l all I need to know. Thanks Steve
Thanks Steve, it's an honour to have been an inspiration, and yes weren't we the lucky generation to learn metalwork as kids!
Fantastic, Del! I remember when you first got the lathe! I’ve learned quite a bit from you. Hope you both are feeling well there. Im nearly finished with our cabinetry thank goodness! Sorry for my absence… 🏍️👍🏍️
(Hi Penny!)
Yes it's been really useful, you'd be surprised what you can make... hope you're both ok and looking forward to the Spring! D&Px

Do you need one, no.
But when you have one, yes.
Hip hip hooray, Del, you made that goal! Great job, very satisfying to be able to create that all by yourself. Have a wonderful weekend, I'm visiting a motor show with friends, Günter/Nürnberg
At it again Del! Great old school shop class! Oh, I too remember the 70's! Always fun to watch you do your stuff. Thanks Bud!
Glad you enjoyed it and thank you so much for your kind feedback!
Boys Metal Work, Wood Work and Gardening. Girls Cooking, Domestic Science, and Dress Making. I'm a generation or so ahead of you Del but I still remember it well. And that whirring noise you hear is not a Lathe, it's the Woke Brigade spinning in horror..🤣🤣
Oops, yes indeed, I think they all just imploded after reading your message!
Hi, What type of lathe is this? Looks a good size for the garage
500mm between centres, it's more than ive ever needed for my projects.
Great Results Del! Loved the outtakes at the end 😂😂
Glad you enjoyed it mate, it doesn't always go to plan, thought we'd include a giggle at the end!
Excellent outtakes! 👍
As always great job and as I have told you before a little humor can be good... Loved the outtakes!!!!!! Doesn't need to be all the time but every now and then.... Wonderful... More Tardis noises tho ok.... Love me some Doctor Who....
Thanks buddy, glad you enjoyed it, just having a little fun, the key normally drops straight in first time, but must be getting old as needed a few tries on this one!
Love the outtakes 😂
Nice one Del. Do you grind your own tools or are they commercially bought? Got a lathe, couldn't imagine myself without one now.
Yes I do, I find it really good fun making different shaped tools for different jobs and a little cheaper as you can continue sharpening it over and over!
I nice to be able to make things yourself, sometimes they turn out bad and the time they work it bring a smile to my face, that a good feeling pal.keep it up.nice to see
So true, doesn't always go well, but each one of them is a learning day right !?
You had me at: "Do you need a..." Yes, yes I do! Justification? Hah! Justification, shmustification. Gimme! Unfortunately all the other pesky little details like money, space, skill, etc., get in the way, but other than that...😆 I will perforce need to fulfill the lack vicariously through your excellent videos. 😁
Ha ha, im glad you agree... you'll always find uses for it, and things you can make. ! Thank you for your wonderful support as always.. D&Px
Handy thing to have! I don't have the room, but many times wish i did!
Awesome video brother!! Having a lathe would be great to really trigger your imagination and creativity!!! Definitely would love to have it one day !!!! Great work brother !!! Stay safe guys cheers from New York !!!!🎉🎉🎉🎉
Good to hear from you Renzo, we hope you're both well... Spring weather should be right round the corner, so we can get out and ride soon! Enjoy your weekend both, D&Px
And a milling machine too!
Ooh yes please..!
love the out takes//lol
Hey Del, great stuff as always. I’m just trying to think of the name of the band you used to promote, think it was when you were doing the Harley Sportster build?
Was it "Feast of Friends", or maybe "The Transistions" ...or "The Crandells" perhaps ?
I’m sure you said they were friends of yours and could be found on TH-cam?
th-cam.com/video/J0tTq78ivfU/w-d-xo.html
That’s the one mate, love it 👍👍
Definitely would like one thats for sure. 😁
I always wondered how u got the chuck in first time everytime.😂
Sometimes i do..!
Certainly useful for creating exactly what you need 👍🏻 the outakes were pure class 🤣 HBD.
Cheers buddy, Glad you enjoyed it! Have a great weekend and stay safe.
Never thought about it but interesting even so thanks many of them
Well above my pay grade 😂
Luv It
Brilliant Del 👍
Deffo remember using the lathes and other workshop machines at school
Shame it's no longer part of the curriculum these days 😞
Keep up the great work Del 'n' Pen 👍
Thanks mate, will do. 👍
Happy Birthday Del 🎉
Thank you buddy, good to hear from you, have a great weekend!
Afternoon del.
Del, you work very well on the lathe and you brings out of it 200% of what it is capable of. respect!
I recommend not skipping a practical course. In my understanding, I'm guessing, the seller knew how to give the buyer a discount voucher for a special practical course on the products he sells. Above a certain level of basic machines maybe the course is free?
Fantastic bro
The crowd cheer was a thing of genius! Are you sure your didn't have a live studio audience recorded for your winning, never-to-be-believed, corner kick into the net! BRILLIANT! I'd love to get a wood lathe for my guitar builds; knobs, tuners, etc. But like you said... space, cost and justification are a factor. One day!
Thank you brother.. im sure you could find the space for a small wood turning lathe, the one you'd need for such jobs would be no bigger than a couple of shoe boxes and light enough to pack away under the bench..! Go do it now.. tomorrow never comes right!! Have a peacful Sunday both of you.. D&Px
@@Moonfleet41 Thanks for the inspiration. I'll take it to heart and get one. The fun part is going to be ruining a lot of material and learning how to do it. Might not be the right way, but it'll be my way! lol
Del and Penny, your channel should be banned! ,why do you have to keep finding such awesome tools,
I bought the same lathe from machine mart at the same time as you did and have used it a lot, what you didnt mention was it weighs as much as a bus and all the "saved " bits of bar ends etc also weigh a ton!
My tool drawers are full now so no more new tools please 😜, its been a cracking ride and very informative, keep up the good work 👍👍👍👍👍
You're not wrong, I was shocked how insanely heavy it is! And it always kinda scares me having to move it, definitely an intimidating lump! Thanks for your kind words, we're glad to have been some sort inspiration, have a great weekend, D&Px
Top 👍👍👍👍👍👍
You are the 'Man'
Hey Del great video start new job on 4th got a giant lathe there told em want to learn that said no issue there love the out takes keep going buddy spring round the corner 🏍
That's awesome news, you'll enjoy the lathe mate... and yeah, Spring rideing soon, just getting the Busa back on the road for some daft fun in the lanes..!
