    Something I do at my bins is people who go daily as resellers I befriended and told them my dream finds or style I look for. Then they will find me when I'm there and give me things they find that they know I will like!

    My tip is not to go with something in mind that you’re look for because truly you never know what you’ll find. I wish there had been a video like this before I started going to the bins. I love the digging and yes still such good things to be found after the swarm. My bins has regulars who would have certainly yelled at those teenagers from your bins had they been there.

    • @DressMeUpScotty
      @DressMeUpScotty  ปีที่แล้ว +16

      I agree, you have to go opened minded for sure!
      I really wish more people spoke up against the teenagers but instead people kind of followed suit. Meanwhile a few others like myself stood back behind the line like “what the heck is going on??”

    Quilter here 🙋‍♀️ It's traditional to embroider your name/initials and the date on a quilt when you finish it. I think it's because handmade quilts are heritage pieces that usually get passed down and having the name and date on it keeps a record of who made it:) I agree with you, it's too pretty to cut up!

    • @DressMeUpScotty
      @DressMeUpScotty  ปีที่แล้ว +11

      That’s so cool! I didn’t know that! Thank you for the insight 🥰♥️ and I agree I am keeping it as is. I will save the quilt jacket project for maybe a quilt that is falling apart if I come across one. Or maybe an unfinished quilt project someone donates 😂

    I'm a costumer and I always have a list in my head of lace, trims, and fabrics I want to pick up when I go to the bins... every time I go there I find far more of what I like then my budget will pay for! I'm the gray haired old lady with wobbly legs who sorts through the bins all the way to the bottom and finds bits and bobs that other folk miss because they rush through their bin searches... Be polite and helpful and others may actually give you something from their shopping cart that matches a piece you picked up and exclaimed over, just so they can see you smile. Always stay far back from those people who dive into the bins when they first come out and you will find the treasures they miss.

    • @DressMeUpScotty
      @DressMeUpScotty  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Totally agree! Patience is key at the bins. I’ve gone through and found amazing things in bins that were picked over. This last trip I found stuff in very sparse bins. I guess it helps having very specific taste hehe. But that’s so cool that you find materials to use. I’m trying to do that too for diy’s. I find lots of faux greenery and florals.

    Another quick tip for the measuring tape. I mark in ink on the tape my half-waist size (for skirts & pants) and my half-bust size. That way I just lay down the item and measure quickly and don't bother if they aren't big enough (I can always take them in if they're too large).

    • @blaireshoe8738
      @blaireshoe8738 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depending on the ink and measuring tape material you may be able to clean it off with isopropyl alcohol if/when your measurements change, though it may also remove the tape's measurements, so test swab in an inconspicuous place first, ie on the cm side if you usually use inches, or near the end of the roll so at worst you're only shortening its total length!

  • @genevievetessier7761
    @genevievetessier7761 ปีที่แล้ว +37

    The mesuring tape is also a good idea to see if furniture will fit in the car trunk. I keep one in my purse for thrift stores, flea markets and garage sales. Nothing worse than playing tetris with your purchases in the car -.-'

    Yesssss bin digging! I don't know if I've mentioned this before, but one of my clients came across an amazing brown suede jacket when she went - the only thing she needed to do was replace the buttons with some funky ones she had laying around. I tend to have decent luck with finding backpacks and other kinds of bags - we've seen some really nice Swiss brand luggage at ours a few times. The keeping a tape measure thing is honestly genius and I don't know why we haven't done that ourselves.
    Skirt! Hike! DIY! Yesssss!

    Watch for a green canvas with brown leather trim backpack just a little smaller than Daypack size.
    The front will say Campomaggi 1961.
    I found one at our Oregon bins, sold it on ebay for $169.00 in about 2 weeks it had 10 watchers.
    I got a real low ball offer the first day, but I waited.
    It had a small hole in the canvas on the out side and a 2 inch hole on the inside or it would have sold for at least $200.

    I’ve found at my local bins if the resellers figure out I’m not a reseller they are usually polite and not nearly as pushy. haha. Another tip: bring water! I live in the southeastern us, and my local bins is in a warehouse that is not cooled during the warmer months. I made this mistake the first time and nearly got heat exhaustion. Not fun! I love how cheap the bins are, but the downside is the chaos and mess really overwhelms me and I only go every few months. Totally worth it though!

    I’ve been nearly run over by people with their carts and also have met some really nice people. I don’t have one near my home but love to go when I visit my daughter in N.C. It’s so much fun but you have to love to dig. My advice is if you see something you even think you might be interested in go ahead and put it in your cart. You can decide later if you want it or not. Also pick up a rug, bedspread, or whatever you can find to lay over your cart to hide your finds when you park your cart along the wall. It’s an unspoken rule to not get into other people’s carts.

    Oh my goodness I went to the bins only one time, and I literally left crying. Never having been to one before I did not know that there were so many rules. An older lady came up to me, obviously they been professional as I call them. And started telling me that there can only be two people at one bin. If I get books they must be stacked from the biggest to the lowest on top. All clothing must be folded and placed into sections such as shirts, tank tops, jeans, slacks, blazers, etc. all hard goods must be placed independent of each other. If I would find some dishes that would include the big dish the salad plate and cup and saucer that must be placed into one section and then if I find another site exactly like-the other one, that must be placed in a separate section.I was also told I have only X amount of time to be looking in each bin so someone else can dig in that bin, And then she started yelling at me telling me that I’m not allowed to have a cart unless I have been at that been several times. She started after me so bad at the security guard came up and wanted to know what the issue was. And I told him I had just walked in the door I have never been here before. And the security guard told the lady to layoff me but I have a right to be there. She continued to yell at me so I just left. I would love to go back to a bin , But I’m afraid I have PTSD from that whole situation. Oh and she also told me I am never to come by myself

    • @DressMeUpScotty
      @DressMeUpScotty  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      That is so weird, did she work there? And was it a Goodwill location or another company? I’ve never been to a bins location with that many strict rules. The ones I’ve been to the basic rules are just that you have to stay behind the line while they wheel the new row out, then once they’re in place it’s a free for all, nothing folded, it’s just chaos. That sounds like the other end of the stress spectrum. I’m so sorry you experienced that. That lady needs to take a big chill pill 😭

    One thing I already learned about the bins is that they'll price out just about any item over 18-24" and not make you weigh that. I made this mistake by paying weight for a golf bag, when I found out after they would have given it to me for $2.99. I ended up paying over their retail store price for it at the bins. 8 pounds at $1.79/pound. Live and learn.

    I went to the bins twice. It wasn’t nearly as scary as people make it out to be. People were courteous and polite. There was no pushing, shoving, or fighting. The first time i went I found so much stuff. The second time not as much but it’s so much fun to dig! I love the thrill of the hunt but I put so much pressure on myself being ac reseller and finding those bolos that will flip for good profit I drive myself insane at times. Thrifting used to be so much fun for me, and sometimes it still is but it’s become much more like a job because it is my job and finding those bolos is priority. Before I used to love finding a brand called INC. which is a Macy’s house brand And my favorite brand to personally wear and once I got into reselling I found out that it moves slowly, if at all, and not for much $ and there is so much of it at my Goodwills and I pass it by now. So sad!

    I've only gone to the Bins once, and I wasn't too impressed. They didn't seem to have a lot of stuff - most of it was pretty junky - and I didn't find anything worth getting. People were tossing stuff from one end of the bin to the other, or digging all the way down and coming up with armfuls of stuff, so I tried to come back to those bins after they moved on. I have better luck at the two local regular stores (30 and 45 minutes away); since they're both in fairly small towns (not big cities) they don't get picked over as much.

      Really?? Seems like not that good of a deal unless you find real gems. I like that the ones I’ve been to have the weight method because you can collect little things here and there that don’t make a difference. Can’t imagine paying even a dollar for some of the stuff I got lol.

      Spill over from the regular thrift stores, in other words what doesn't sell. That's another step before getting rid of them permanently.

    • @DressMeUpScotty
      @DressMeUpScotty  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yes and to add to the other reply, some areas receive such a huge number of donations that not all donations even make it to being placed in store due to consumerism. A lot of people use goodwill donations as a way to just get rid of stuff. So if a store or donation center receives more than they’re able to stock, they’ll automatically send overflow to the clearance centers. And like Ida said the clearance center is the last step before they send the stuff to the landfill. So when bins are wheeled away they’re most likely headed to the landfill sadly. Which is why I like shopping there because not only is it cheap, but you’re saving the items from being thrown away. And the fact that you’ll find brand new stuff and rare vintage?? Insane.

    I honestly love the bins but the other people there put me in such a bad mood. I’m fine with crowds. Less fine with being literally shoved and cussed at and items being ripped from my hands when looking through things. Maybe it’s just the one I have close to me but the people at the one near me behave worse than any group of adults I’ve ever seen in any setting. It makes me embarrassed to be a human.
