- (12:33am) The Finale song of the ceremony, "Faster Higher Stronger", (which is the Latin Translation of the phrase "Citius, Altius, Fortius" used by Pierre de Coubertin on the creation of the International Olympic Committee in 1894) is sung by the World renowned opera singer Jessye Norman. Hosted by Dick Enberg & Bob Costas July 20th 1996 Atlanta, Georgia, USA
Music, Mark Watters
Lyrics by Lorraine Feather
There's an ancient call that echoes
In the minds of all who strive
To fulfill a dream of glory
To be joyously alive
We've been searching for the heart's true freedom
With a passion that can never die
And our victory will shine like sunlight
On everyone who hears the cry
Citius (Faster)
Altius (Higher)
Fortius (Stronger)
Here we stand
This long-awaited day
Beginning - we pray
That we'll be lifted higher
A fire lights every soul
We turn toward our goal
And suddenly we are faster
Each one of us has cried
But we cast pain aside
And slowly we grow stronger
The race is ours to run
Let a voice heard round the world proclaim
The games have now begun
Run faster
Reach higher
Be stronger
Hand to hand
The torch is passed in trust
Among us - we must
Keep climbing even higher
We seem to hear the cheers
Of thousands of years
And find we are ever faster
These rings are intertwined
Like the hopes of mankind
Together we are stronger
The race is ours to run
Let a voice heard round the world proclaim
The games have now begun
Run faster
Reach higher
Be stronger
Faster
Higher
Stronger
I lived a few blocks away from where this was happening, but I'll never forget the electricity that came to Atlanta that summer. It was amazing!! RIP Ms. Norman you will be terribly missed.
I'm one of the first people in the pan, in the blue costume with the long pole. This was the most amazing event of my life! Blessed to be in it and amazing to see my face almost 20 years ago!
GOD Bless You Ms. Jessye Norman, Sing up a storm in Heaven !
I needed this today. Thanks! RIP dear Jessye.
Jessye, as always, is extraordinarily, magnificently powerful a presence and voice!!!
RIP JESSYE
Incredibly inspired piece of music by Mark Watters. I regret it has not been performed ever since, to my knowledge.
Tudo é divino, maravilhoso quando Jessye faz ecoar sua voz no mundo!

I have been wanting for YEARS to see this epic performance again from Jessye Norman!
Thank you xo
Splendissima!
Thank you very much for sharing these videos with us. I was 23 when the Atlanta games were going on, and I was too drunk to remember it then :P
Thanks a lot for this!!!!
RIP jESSSYE
Thanks a lot for uploading this, I'm 28 , when I saw and heard this I was only 12...and it didn't slipped outta my memory.
Brava!
Absolutely fantastic, Jessye! Not a great song rhythmically, but she made it happen! Brava, girl!
RIP
Awesome :)
this comment made my day!
wow so many haters, lol but i remember watching this as it happened and am sooooo glad i got to see her sing it again...i just wished she woulda hit that higehr note at the end to overpower the music... i did!!!lol
I've watched all that you have for Atlanta. THANKS! i was traveling back from a camp while this was going on, so i missed it. Are there parts not on TH-cam yet?
@tvpro75 sup man, lol i just like to hear this song cuz i remember watchin ths live when it originally aired, lol
they told me to keep training in fencing and it'd be easy to go to the olympics.
i woulda been crying the entire time lol
@tvpro75 hey fam wuts good?!! i kno whn it got to the end, that next note wuda killed it!!! lol
@nichtsleezy i can somewhat agree...its her range that carries her over to dramatic soprano; she is till the bomb tho, lol
I think that she is more of a mezzo than a dramatic soprano!
what happened to last part that was deleted?
She always had long hair. That is NOT a wig.
is it just me, or does it sound a bit weird to hear any opera sung in english?
of course she is a professional singer
that´s pretty logical.
oh I love Diana Ross!
Excuse me, but I know for a fact that Ms. Norman has Very Short hair!! She has an extensive collection of wigs and weaves!
Love Ms . Norman, but I've made farts more original than this song. Somebody got PAID for this??!!
I have to agree with your first statement. The song is definitly terrifying... I'm doing it right now with my choir and we all majorly fail. Funny thing that we're supposed to be able to sing it in June... Well, we can't all be Jessye Norman^^
