Today, the 30th of september 2019, mrs. Norman died. I have seen her in countless performances but this is the one I’ll never forget. A black woman, personifying lady Liberty in that place at that time was magical and highly symbolic. May she rest in peace.
Yes. I just shared this video in her honor. I was studying French history in grad school in 1989 and loved watching her performance on TV. I finally got to attend Bastille Day a few years ago. She did France and herself proud that day.
Daniel Woodlief It was a masterstroke of President Mitterand and Mrs. Norman wrote extensively about it in her autobiography. A personal envoy from the President of the French Republic asked her to sing live and solo at the conclusion of an evening filling show. How could she refuse? She received the Légion d’Honneur for this performance, as a token of respect and gratitude.
Descanse en paz.. 😔
Yes, she was a stunning artist and a great woman. May she rest in peace. Amen.
Just reading her obituary in the papers .what a singer ,what a woman 👍🏽👍🏽😎
I WAS THERE!! I have never, ever forgotten how beautiful her voice was; how beautiful she was draped in the French Flag.
SO BLessed you were!
Me too!!!! Im from Belo Horizonte/Brazil. I was there with my parents!!!!
Norman's costume, which represented France's flag "Le Tricolore," was designed by Tunisian-born fashion designer Azzedine Alaïa.
So simple, but soo dramatic and refined!!!
I was in the US Air Force and assigned to support the Presidential Unit. This was the best TDY I ever went on…the French were incredibly hospitable and the ambiance around Paris that breezy summer night I will always remember.
i was there too but unfortunately i couldn't get close enough so i went back to my hotel near the ecole militaire metro and watched it on my TV. i could see the fireworks tho. i went to the parade on champs de elysee earlier in the day and the city of paris party the next day/evening on the champ de mars.
I'm an American and I cry every time I watch this - Jessye Norman as Marianne is so deeply hopeful and powerful.
What an amazing talent Jessye Norman had. What a loss.
I watched the events live from the United States. My memory is of the camera focusing on a tricolor at the base of the obelisk at Place de la Concorde. Then the flag began to move, and Jessye Norman and her powerful voice emerged from the folds. It still makes me pause and relish the moment, its beauty and its meaning. France, one of the most powerful colonial nations in history, chose the descendant of slaves to perform their national anthem. They could have had anyone. They chose her.
Ms. Norman mastered France national anthem and Ms. Houston mastered our national anthem. May they both rest in power.
She was, & shall ever be, La Gloire. May she rest in power.
Always 100 percent sincere in every word she sang. Oh Jessye Norman, rest in peace. Your voice gave me such peace in very troubled times. You belong to the ages now, but so reluctantly we have to let you go.
Although Jessye Norman left this world today, September 30 2019, it is through recordings of her art like this that she will live on forever.
We salute you Queen Norman!
LIBERTAD,IGUALDAD,FRATERNIDAD
I cry every time I hear La marseillaise and I am a proud Scotsman.
The greatest anthemn in the world from one of the greatest countries on earth.
Vive la France.
Rab in Scotland
This performance made me fall in love with the Diva of Opera. I cried when I saw it and I’m an American. 😊. RIP Ms. Norman 😔
I was there and will never forget the moment. More than one million spectators on the Place, a wall of water pumped from the Seine as a backdrop. It was incredible.
YES! I was there too What a moving performance!
What a brilliant and splendid performance. Ms. Jessye Norman look spectator and beautiful.
I watched the whole celebration as it was shown on US TV in 1989. I've never forgotten it. It was one of the more moving events of my life. The long parade made up of all the French sub-cultures in native costumes and the music by Mr Goode. I made a VCR tape that somehow was lost, but TH-cam has enough to remind me how good it was.
I'm envious. (LOL) I read an article about this event and it made a big impression. My thought: the French really know how to stage a spectacular celebration. Here it is. Ha, just saw Barbara and George Bush beaming up at the stage, no doubt very proud of their fellow American. This just has to be available as a DVD somewhere. Too good not to be.
I was in a song/ dance group performing in France in conjunction with the Bicentennial. Remember watching this on French TV and was totally blown away.

-the entire performance. Quality not so bad. As far as I know, this is the only upload that has the entire concert.
A stirring reminder of the power of life and liberty. Liberte, egalite, fraternite. Vive la France.
Amazing Rendition - Jessie Norman RIP.
RIP dear lady and thank you for all the wonderful music you gave us
Merveilleux Jessye Norman, dors en paix
Merci bcp.
Notre Diva!
Wow! What an amazing singer. The most stirring dramatic soprano of our age
you tube, i love you, i remember this in 89 and thought i would never see it again. She is stupendous

It's amazing. Only Jessye Norman could get away with wearing a flag and wearing it like a diva! Love this arrangement and performance, and the whole thing!
My favourite national anthem-such cruel lyrics- and the towering performance of the great Jessye Norman at this occassion. Just monumental.
Desolee. Tres triste.
My french teacher in high school showed us this performance. It was such a great introduction to a remarkable chanteuse.
I so wish I had been there. Vive Mme. Norman et Vive la France!!
Beautiful ! Azzedine Alaia designed that iconic dress to Jessye.
Happy National Day of France !
Magnificent, hauntingly beautiful rendition of the most beautiful anthem. What a voice. What singer. I remember watching this live, in awe.
I stayed up late into the morning to watch this live in the States. One of the most unforgettable performances I have seen. The huge crowds. Jessye Norman clothed in the billowing Tricolor with the Arc d'Triomphe in the background! Thank you for posting this gem.
Thank you Ms. Norman for sharing your talent with the world! You will be forever missed.
IGNORANTE
@@eduardoramirez3764 sabes porque se le considera el himno mas bello del mundo ??

Amazing voice! Amazing woman! I could feel the French revolution spirit. Thank you and RIP.
Merveilleuse !! Merci Madame

mon coeur s'emplit de fierté quand je l'entend cet hymne, mon hymne, notre hymne....
vive la république, vive la France
Sad to hear of her passing so soon after her friend Toni Morrison. Such a stirring anthem and a magnificent rendition. Long live Liberty, Equality and Fraternity! It’s a fearful time for the world with the rise of populists but these virtues live on.
Wow! She was beautiful, powerful and wonderful. I wish i was thereé
VIVE LA FRANCE ! VIVE NOTRE PATRIE !!!!!!!!!!!
Me too. I remember the hurdy-gurdies and the Senegalese drummers going on for what seemed like half-an-hour, this incredible hypnotic sound, and the TV commentators saying every few minutes, "Jessye Norman's next". Amazing build up of excitement. And then Jessye!!!!!!!! A thousand thanks for posting this.
HER VOICE IS SO INCREDIBLY POWERFUL
superbe et magnifique cérémonie
I still have just looked at this video and I cannot prevent myself from having the eyes wet each time (i cry lol)
Our anthem inspired all the free people thereafter and I'm proud of it because it's not only the anthem of France and french people, it's also the UNIVERSAL ANTHEM of all free and sovereign people in the whole world!!!
this is something to share today her glorious voice ringing out Prayers to the people of Paris

Imposible no emocionarse
Si...es Extraordinaria...
I always remember this performance. I saw it live on TV. I was in Scotland then. If a flag could sing, this is what it would be like. Ms. Norman is just - just wonderful!!

🐻This 【La Marseillaise】 (French national anthem) was written between April 25 and 26, 1792, by Claude-Joseph Rouget de Lille (1760-1836), a military man and songwriter , that is said to have been created. After that, as the background of this 【La Marseillaise】, in the middle of the French Revolution (1789-1795), in the same year (1792), in the attack on Thuirurii Palace (August 10, 1792), by the public and military,XVI (1754-1793, 5th King of France of the Bourbon dynasty, last absolute monarch of France, first French despot) and Marie Antoinette (1755-1793, Queen Louis XVI) and other members of the royal family at the Tanpuru Tower imprisoned ,two weeks earlier, the federation squad from Marseille (the largest port city in southern France overlooking the Gulf of Lyon in the Mediterranean Sea) sang the federation song as they entered, humming 【La Marseillaise】 as an anthem of freedom,it made its way to Paris, where it was eventually adopted as the French national anthem in 1795. However, nine years later, in 1804, Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821, soldier and revolutionary during the French Revolution, emperor of the First Empire) became emperor, there was a time when the 【French national anthem】 was changed to the 【Departure song】.26 years later, in 1830, in the wake of the July Revolution, the ban on 【La Marseillaise】 was lifted as the national anthem ,around that time, Berlioz (1803-1869), a French romantic composer famous for his Symphony Fantasie, seems to have modified and arranged it. 22 years later, during the Second Empire (1852-1870) of Napoleon III (1808-1873, President of the Second Republic, Emperor of the Second Empire),even in the period of the Third Republic (1870-1940) that followed, at first, this 【La Marseillaise】seemed to have been avoided due to the intense color of the revolution. After such a period of twists and turns, in 1879 during the Third Republic, breaking the 27-year seal, it was established as the 【French national anthem】,to this day, it has been more than 200 years since 【La Marseillaise 】 was first hummed, and more than 100 years since it was established as the national anthem of France in 1879 during the Third Republic,it seems that there is a historical background that has passed through many eras. By the way, the port city of Marseille, where the federation squad are said to have originally hummed this song, 【La Marseillaise】, was founded in the 6th century BC as the Greek colony of Massalia,it seems that it developed as a " free port" in the 14th century. The spirit of the "free port" is well connected with the "freedom" of the tricolor (French flag) of "liberty (blue), equality (white), fraternity (red)",and for some reason I feel a mysterious truth in this 【La Marseillaise】. And,the "blue" in the tricolor, which means "freedom," gives me a feeling of enchanting freedom, skillfully influenced by the flow of the blue sea,in the flow of time, under the blue sky of Marseille, the birthplace of 【La Marseillaise】. And again, Marseille has a warm, humid, Mediterranean climate, with sunny days most of the year, and the atmosphere is very nice, I feel that it is reflected to some extent. In addition, this 【La Marseillaise】, which has such an atmosphere, awakens the unique French temperament, inherits the breath of the times that symbolizes the turbulent France called the French Revolution, and has a sense of patriotism and unity, it is a truly epoch-making song that is very approachable and beautiful to listen to, beautiful and touching, moving, that maintains (shows) a dramatic disposition to the present, passionate and dynamic, literally French, that's what I think. Also, this 【La Marseillaise】, which trembles the soul and rejoices in freedom, continues to carry the spirit of the legendary era to the present, and will continue to be a symbol of the future, under the roof of Paris, like the Eiffel Tower, I feel the ideal romance that will continue to be the essence of France, echoing and echoing even in unknown corners of the earth for many years to come.
🎠The legendary and traditional traditions of the turbulent French Revolution, the brave and pure, beautiful and exciting, rolling, smooth, romantic melodies, are conveyed with an original and dynamic feeling that remains unchanged even in today's era. In this 【La Marseillaise】 (French national anthem), I feel a warm heart and a gentle breeze, seeking freedom for dreams and hopes.
🎠When we listen to 【La Marseillaise】 (French national anthem), which praises the zeitgeist of the French Revolution, we feel that it is a sincere song specific to France.
🎠 Wearing the tricolor (French flag) of blue (liberty), white (equality), and red (fraternity), Ms. Jessye Norman displayed the soulful and physical expression that is unique to a rare soprano singer. The soulful, generous, and energetic voice and heart of 【La Marseillaise】 (French national anthem), which accompanies it, gives people a mesmerizing experience that awakens their souls.

@gaijingunmail - Wow...BEST VERSION EVER ! I love La Marseillaise, and this was a real pleasure !!!!
Thrilling! I saw this on TV when it was first broadcast and have loked for it ever since.
Jessye Normann is magnific !
Splendide
Vive la Revolution! from italy ✊🏻🚩🚩🇨🇵🇨🇵🇨🇵🇨🇵🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹
