I would say that Scase was more likely the bully at his school, not the bullied. Small man's syndrome in buckets. They are the worst because they instinctively know people's vulnerabilities and play on them. I have met several DO Scases in my life. They are everywhere. They are the type who would spread hurtful and untrue rumours about innocent people in order to ridicule, ostracise and isolate them. Not only that, they would pick on younger kids, because being older, they would be wiser and more experienced. Even though they were the same size, they would be physically stronger, so would pick on kids from the years below.

Going back to Scase, and others like him, psychological bullies are worse than physical ones because they have an instinct for people's vulnerability. I remember one at my school who, like Scase was small in stature, and very calculating. He had, and presumably still has, a huge amount of small man's syndrome. He would pick on something others were self conscious about. For example, one kid had a stutter, another had buck teeth from sucking his thumb as a small child, another was overweight. He managed to manipulate others to unite with him to ridicule and isolate each of them. We even had another kid who was exceptionally good at football and rugby. The small kid openly complained that he kept the ball to himself and was not a team player. It even got to the stage where he would refuse to pass him the ball in matches because he "hogged" it too much. He manipulated others to do the same, and, as a result, our school teams lost matches they would otherwise have won easily. Scase, and this boy, were male versions of Nurse Ratched. I think that is the best way to define him, rather than someone who was bullied.
