Power issues for turrets inside the base can be solved by constructing a cable offgrid and close to turrets so you just reconnect them to main grid when needed without pawns

Back when turkeys could be trained to fight, they breed just fast enough to not overwhelm supplies, and are just stocky enough to not be downed with the first couple of hits...closest thing to a flock of velociraptors

I've always been confused by the idea of seting up a killbox. They all seem so large, and as it was brought up in the video, what if they come from a different direction? Do you need multiple killboxes? I need to research more base building setups I guess for me to wrap my head around it

Will generally you want to set up your base in a way that there is only one entrance. The enemy AI with b line it for that entrance, which is why you set up the kill boxes there. Plus without them once you get to the raids where you are outnumbered it lets you manage the numbers

The whole purpose is to prevent being swarmed from all sides.
You usually want a wall to cover behind and some traps to weaken potential invaders.
It may not work against all attackers but at least if gives you a chance to survive.

some ideas (its been a while since I last played so some stuff may be outdated)
--sappers always go to beds and avoid turrets, so by these rules you can force them to take a certain path
or you can put the only beds in the base in your killbox with the walls made from opened doors. now sappers will always sap into your killbox
-- if you place a wall piece on its own and roofs the tiles around it, if a raider destroys the wall the roof collapses on them
by placing this trap in mass with a mountain base that has few other outside tiles you can beat entire raids with little risk, (I recommend stone blocks so raiders can't set them on fire)
    - there is a cap on the number of insect nests that can be on the map at once. if you can get it them to spawn in the corner of a mountain so even at full size it is sealed you can effectively disable bugs while still having them on. only do this on a map that will always be warm enough that that the hives won't get damaged as if that happens you will face a maxed out insect stampede. also bugs from mining can be killed without issue and hives from quests will still spawn.
    - walling off the entire map makes manhunters irrelevant
    - roofing off the map will cause all sieges to turn into normal raids
    - by building a door one tile out from inline you can designate the roofing around the door such that anyone who smashes the door will get hit by a roof collapse (I recommend putting chunks where you don't want them to stand)

The last infestation defence is pretty useful. I did it once and my base was totally save but at some point my game was too laggy to a point where it was unplayable.

On one of my chilly mountain strongholds I ended up using the Bug defense on steroids. had a large infestation from the vanilla expanded insectoids crop up in one of the corners that basically covered two sides of the map.
The AI on the bugs can be a bit quirky in ultra-cold environments. when the smaller bugs get downed with hypothermic slowdown the larger ones would rush the base entrance. some of those battles ended up lasting multiple ingame days. I reformed the faction ideoligion to be indifferent to insect meat and the colony stayed well fed for a very long time. It took me several ingame years to clear out that bug nest with a large number of very well armed and armoured colonists. It was a LONG distance away from the base in very cold and snowy conditions making it difficult to access let alone manipulate or destroy.
Stressful as that map was, it's still one of my favourite colonies. Had to keep an ear out for the combat encounter music at all times. That was the only warning that the bugs were incoming. Violet the warrior with her monosword held the gap Sugar the grenadier right behind, and everyone else crowded in behind them to gun down the bottled-up mass of bugs. Noncombatants were tasked with running the wounded to the biosculptors and the hospital. It wasn't unusual for a pawn to pop out of a biosculptor, grab a meal, snort some yayo and dive right back into the fray... and often end up right back in the biosculptor.
In this colony everyone carried yayo, wakeup and at least one meal. Battles frequently required those resources to keep people sane. Anyone that broke was likely to get caught in the cataclysmic mess in the front entrance of the base. Odds of a revivable body even being left at the end of a conflict were often poor. On the plus side, anything that did survive the destruction stayed fresh pretty much indefinitely. with the multiple climate adjustors affecting the area, the summer temperatures maxed out around 2C.
I never did build many turrets on that map. they ended up too damned hard to defend or build in sufficient quantities to sway any of the conflicts on that map.

A thing I came up, Im sure other found out too, is to use coast maps.
Make it so theres a mountain into deep part of the ocean, so you mine it.
Then you use the deep water to protect the turrets and snipers. Its great to kill manhunting packs too.

Personally I like to use the triangle shaped killbox. The point of the triangle is the entrance and the bottom of the triangle is where your pawns stand. You can put turrets along the triangle edges and if one explodes it wont cause a chain reaction because the jagged walls of the triangle block the explosions, but it doesnt give enemy pawns cover to hide when a turret explodes either. Additionally I have two rows for the pawns, the back row is the standard full wall then barricade the wall then barricade etc, but the front row is just a line of barricades. Pawns in the front row tend to be melee and have shield generators which provides an additional layer of protection for the shooters as bullets aimed at the shooters will likely hit the shields, and the shooters can over-the-shoulder fire even though the shields should be blocking their fire. Melee enemies who run all the way across the killbox will then have to fight my meleers and will usually be getting hit by 3 pawns at a time with uranium maces and plasma/monoswords. Thats if they get across, because the triangle is covered with spike traps. Speaking of spike traps, the entry tunnel has spike traps for the first half and barricades for the second half, it really helps to soften their assault. The spike traps can easily be repaired by maintenance tunnels filled with wood that run between the spike trap tunnel parts. Later in the game I stop making spike traps or turrets and I cover the floor of the triangle in stone tiles so I can use molotovs to clean up after the raid, saves time, and I dont need the spikes or turrets when my troops are high shooting skill with bionic eyes and masterwork assault rifles (I use AR for the extra range, lets me make a longer killbox and be a bit safer, and their damage is comparable to heavy smg, you can also use them to outrange centipedes that dropped down on your base while they are distracted by trying to shoot your shield pawns.

I like 3 killboxes, 3 tiers, 3 different ranges (sniper, medium and then close). 2 wide trap hallways connect the kill boxes (one side with traps the other with barricades). One row of mini turrets out front with doorways and auto cannon turrets behind the mini turrets staggered, mini turrets 4 spaces apart as to not blow up on each other, autocannons/uranium slug cannons in a ""U" shaped wall, colonists stand in between those in doors. Sniping in 1st tier box, medium range stuff in second box and 3rd tier box is the "last stand" where you can throw grenades at your enemy. Switches to turn off turrets if you have to fall back to the next box so they don't all get destroyed.

I usually don't bother with a full up killbox any more, but I am a huge fan of the trapped hallway from Hell. lots and lots of zig zags and traps and stuff to slow raiders down, with shortcuts so when they break we can be on the exit before they get there and finish the slaughter. Meat's back on the menu, boys!

My favorite is the oven. Similar to the freezer you showed, but instead of the coolers, just keep several piles of wood at the far end of the trap (can be stacks of 1 wood, by starting fence constructions, then cancelling / disallowing, after the wood is delivered), Molotov the wood when raiders are half way through the maze, and lock the doors after. Works best if you make it strong, so they cannot escape while burning. Such as double thick granite walls or even plasteel. This is best defense for late game tribal raids (where they rush you with hundreds of melee units). So, since it's just tribal gear I don't care about burning it up; actually saves me time cleaning up after the raid, if anything. Definitely needs some tricks to make it manageable though. Such as tons of doors, to easily access for repairs / cleanup in between uses. Also, might want to normally not include in home zone / any pets' zone, so you don't have colonists trying to clean 1 piece of trash in it, or dogs starving and lost in the middle of the maze. Another good tip, is to put the oven right next to normal kill box, put a short maze before both, then have a door controlling which one they go to. That'll give you time to have your fastest pawn change which killbox they go to, depending on the hostiles. Good video as normal 🍻

I always build in mountains but after my base is up and going, one of my biggest projects is making a halo banana shape in the mountain behind my base with waffle grids periodically to persuade invasions there, then at the entrance I have like 6 doors made of non-flammable materials and about 5-15 floors/barricades/walls each at the entrance made of wood and I just peak in, throw a molotov, and seal the doors making the entire cavern/area fill with heat until it makes the insects/hives spontaneously combust saving me from insects 9 times out of 10 as well as prolonging the time before I have to fight a war level event

So how do you deal with raids that destroy walls? Smart, Breaching and Sapper raids all go straight through or around. it kind of breaks any kind of killbox functionality and you can't even run your pawns into place before the enemy is inside. If it's only going to work for 1 raid in 4 I don't even see a reason to build a killbox at all.
Tougher killboxes can at least slow the enemy down enough to position yourself, but then you've got to rebuild all the walls they grenaded down

      @BrenTenkage 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

the ai will prioritize any opening to your base, so while doors are a way, if there is an open wall where they can pass even if there are turrets guarding it, the ai is programmed to go through that. Thats why people set up the doors, its so your pawns can quickly get in, yes enemies can hit the doors, but usually its a "I noticed a pawn go in it, I have to chase" program, before they move on to "I need to get inside" so they look for an entrance

    • @RoulicisThe
      @RoulicisThe ปีที่แล้ว +1

It depends of the way they spawn : if they all spawn on the same side they'll generally go through the same path.
But if they spawn in several groups, each group having it's own pathing they will try to get into your colony through different paths.
Also : raiders try to get into your base by the shortest route they can find. If they determine that smashing through your wall is shorter than going all the way around your base into the killbox... They'll bash your wall.
Thus, if your base is too large or has too many different sides from which raiders can come from, you'll have to place several killboxes in order to prevent them from breaching the wall wherever they please.

Personally, I play without killboxes. Sure, this makes high difficulty levels significantly harder, but I prefer a challenge on a "low" difficulty over exploiting dumb AI on a high one (making it easier again).

Killboxes is awfull name, when their main goal is a high lvl social activity. Look they are in the base and used to defend your citizens&political stand points. If it would be for trapping people/animals/machines then it's named a Maze. If for offence on enemy territory siege/fort.
