  • Welcome to DAY 2 of my amazing trip through Otsu City!! Had some rainy weather, but that's ok - there are tons of fun activities you can do in Japan on a rainy day! Ride a cable car with me through the misty forest up a mountain, where we'll practice calligraphy before exploring a beautiful Japanese garden.

I LOVE the generosity of spirit of Japanese evidenced by the staff member giving you the tickets!
One time I returned to Japan after a long sea deployment and I had to get back to Misawa wayyyy up north. I had never done this before, but I was expected to do it by myself, so I was bumbling my way through the process.
Everybody from my unit who did the same thing as I took the train from Ueno. So, off to Ueno which was an adventure in itself. As I stood on the main concourse, most assuredly looking totally confused and desperate, a Japanese man in his 30s I would say came up and asked in broken English if I needed help. I was able to get through to him that I needed to get to Misawa on the night train and I had no idea how to do it.
This gentleman told me that the ticket to Misawa would cost a certain amount of yen and for me to give it to him. I REALLY hesitated to do that, but something told me that I could trust him so I took a chance. He told me not to move from my spot. As he rushed off, I had a sinking feeling in my gut that I would never see him again and I was wondering what I was going to do.
But...perhaps ten minutes later, this TRUE gentleman appeared on the horizon of the concourse with ticket (and change) in hand. He picked up my bag, walked me to the train platform, onto the train, and to my seat.
Just writing this down now all these years later, I'm still blown away by his generosity. I truly wonder if it would happen anywhere else.

for those who are curious, FYI Sharla just copied the heart sutra. And BTW, it's hard to do calligraphy when one hold the brush like you would hold a pen or pencil. it's normal for one's brush writing to look not so nice when one holds the brush wrongly. the smaller the kanji, the harder it is to write beautifully. despite how the words turn out to be, i think it is more important to enjoy every stroke you make and feel zen
