    I think it's more accurate to say he was an unhinged lunatic all along, and it was just his station in life that devolved over time. I don't see any scenario where a guy like Van Alden doesn't wind up either dead or in prison eventually. He was batshit crazy.

      They should of kept him on the right side of the law a bit longer in the show. Despite the murder and his religious ferver, he was still one of the better moral characters in the beginning of the show. The show had us empathizing more with the criminals who had far more murders and sin under their belt than Van Alden. He was also seemingly one of only a few agents who treated what was happening like the war it was. He was incredibly effective and if he would of stayed on the right side of the law a bit longer, he could have put several of the main characters away. Which is of course why they had to handicapp him 😂.

      Yeah the way he obsesses over Margaret and does Lucy poorly. He wasn’t a man of principle he was a lunatic cop. Turned criminal.. he kept his life in more check as a criminal until Lucky blew his cover (pause) that was truly the beginning of the end.

      @@loudnclearvoiceovers4141 Hi. At about the 12 minute mark,you touch on every day,better and better. During the Roaring Twenties,a particular aggressive business Christianity came to be. So,instead of the meek inheriting the earth,people were taught to look in a mirror and say to themselves,Every day in every way I am getting better and better. And study scripture,and achieve self awareness. And be better Christians and better people. Well,Bible study is a lot of work. With a lot of conflicting opinions on text and meaning. So. It should be no surprise that everything except the mirror and the saying got left out. Add the Dirty Thirties and a different awareness, survival instead of prosperity,and the scriptwriters absolutely must be given real compliments for doing homework on that. I know about it from an article written in the late 60s. The idea was to look at yourself and see clearly faults and strengths. Instead of using it as an excuse to be selfish. As with any tool,the results come from the hand of the human wielding it. Those scriptwriters sure liked to be multilayered. Good for them. Cheers.

    Van Alden is a dark man. As a religious zealot and prohibition agent, we see him violate moral and legal concepts as a means to what he sees as right. The end justifies the means in his mind, even it involves inflicting pain to a wounded thief and drowning his corrupt partner in a mock baptism. Then he meets Margaret and we see him admit to his sin of lusting after her and punishing himself; he can’t stop though. Then we see him collapse entirely, losing all vestiges of religion and righteousness, and completely gives in to every vice he’s fought against. So he descends into the darkness.

    Nelson was offered an executive position at a company by his brother-in-law which would have been highly lucrative and therefore would've gotten Rose the necessary surgery to improve her chances of bearing children, but Rose was all hopped up on being married to a Prohibition officer so he turned it down, and that right there is the point where Nelson's fate is sealed.

    • @VitZ9
      @VitZ9 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@paulcarpenter7844I honestly have no idea why the writers had Eli sleep with Van Alden's wife. It added absolutely nothing, and was forgotten immediately when the FBI enlisted them to take down Capone. Van Aldens wife and kids are never seen again in the series after that.
      I guess it was there to give Van Alden a reason not to live/risk his life bringing down Capone, but it's never implied to be the case. Rather Van Alden seems more interested in clearing his own name and no longer being a fugitive from the law.
      It seemed like the only person who cared about it was Eli's wife, and by the final episode Eli was already reconciling with her anyway.
      I remember reading reactions at the time the finale season aired, and everyone agreed Can Alden and Eli's affair came out of nowhere and added nothing.

    Self-flagellation was often used as a form of penance, so that is probably exactly what Nelson is using it for. Being a puritanical, repressed, religious fundamentalist he is probably very strict on himself, his actions, and also his thoughts and desires. And he clearly desires Margaret. You could say he covets her... and to covet another man's wife/woman or your neighbor's wife/woman - whichever translation you prefer - that is one of the big Thou Shalt Not no-nos, according to the commandments. That is why I think Nelson is doing this to himself. Nelson believes he needs to do penance for committing this sin, for desiring Margaret, who is another man's woman.
    Just my personal interpretation of course.

For me, I like the ones that offer a season by season recap in playlists. But this character evolution is awesome too. As you mention it; doing obscure movies/series that you like and marketing it as such would be pretty interesting. Really with your observations combined with voice talent as long as you have something big enough to get someone to have the first listen they probably be willing to come back to whatever else you’ve got.

What if he was on the spectrum (autism) and he was tired of being misunderstood and religion was his way holding himself together until he no longer could?
