His use of color to enhance what is naturally seen and capture the true essence of these animals is just so unique and breathtaking! I made it to number 6. Most of the time so far has been spend l spent on the art of drawing. For example, looking at values, midtones, etc, is basic drawing. Whether you're drawing on pastelmat, whether you're using acrylic paint, whether you're using crayons, graphite, whatever... you're looking for the darkest values and lightest values and everything in between.
    Also, quality of photo... Again, this is another one that has nothing to do with pastelmat.
    I'm trying to find out if pastels are right for me and I wanted to see if I have to invest in expensive pastelmat in order to find out. So this video was going to help me learn all about pastelmat. So far you're just giving drawing lessons.

    • @1DaTJo
      @1DaTJo 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I was just thinking that. This video is not about Pastelmat.
      You can buy “samplers”, smaller pieces of different pastel papers to see how each type feels.
      I started off using pastels on regular drawing or sketch book paper. I fell in love with the fact I can use my hands to paint, with no utensils, and I also love that the medium is always ready. No clean up or wastage either.
      If you try a small number of nice quality pastels you’ll soon see if you like them!

    Thank you so much for choosing my drawing to critique (border terrier). I debated long and hard about doing a background and was so afraid of completely messing up that I decided to leave well alone! I love what you did though. I’m assuming you were using Photoshop to try out the background. I just can’t get my head around Photoshop. I do the odd bit but layers just confuse me, lol. I have the iPad and Pencil so maybe I should make more of an effort to learn. Thank you again.

    I loved this video which made lots of sense! I only stumbled across you as bought some pan pastel as a background to a swan and cygnet piece. I am a beginner in colour pencil and never tried pastel and found even the BEST quality black paper does not show up the detail and vibrancy of the colours with colour pencil anyway. I love pastelmat and am going to choose the light blue i think as White's are never white, but going to sample both the blue and grey. Anthracite is far too coarse and has a different texture to the lighter colours. Do you find this? I did love that border terrier drawing, but i did agree with your adjustments. Great job! I need to find out how i can subscribe! Not showing on my TH-cam.

    Lana Hi! Can you please explain the difference between pastel paper & pastle mat?

    • @LanaGloschatArt
      @LanaGloschatArt  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There are many different types of pastel paper, and to my understanding this is a more general term that describes any paper used for pastel.
      Pastelmat is a very specific type of paper specifically designed for layering. It’s a smoother surface that doesn’t make as many crumbs/dust mess and it holds tons of layers.
      Some artists use pastels on velour/velvet and sanded paper… I would consider these different types of “pastel paper”

    I am currently trying to make a cat portrait. One of the eyes, "dulled". I am not sure if it got a little smeared or what. To correct/re-do the eye and get the same vibrancy do I removed the original eye with a stiff brush or re-lay all layers again?

    • @LanaGloschatArt
      @LanaGloschatArt  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Its hard to say without seeing the piece, but I would probably try to apply more colored pencil on top with more pressure. I am concerned that removing the current eye might disturb the rest of the drawing of damage the artwork. Also, sorry for the super late response. I took an extended TH-cam break, but Im back and just posted a new video today if you are interested:

    I thought pastel mat was textured and grainy to grab the pigment? I’m confused. People even say it eats the pencils up because of its fine sanded like texture???

      It is a little bit of both but these are the reasons you can layer like crazy. It is an amazing paper and you need to try it and use it for a few paintings before you get the processes down.

    • @LanaGloschatArt
      @LanaGloschatArt  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It’s definitely a different smoother surface , but it isn’t necessarily better. I use both for different projects and with different pencils. I really like sanded paper for transparent glazing techniques, but I think I prefer pastelmat for drawing animal fur.

    Can Pastelmat be the best choice for Charcoal pencils or Polychromos please? Is it better overall than the Fabriano Artistico?

    • @LanaGloschatArt
      @LanaGloschatArt  ปีที่แล้ว

      It may work on for charcoal, I personally haven’t tried it… and for polychromos it can be a good choice, but it is a completely different paper and therefore different process than working on a hot pressed watercolor paper. I don’t use pastelmat all the time. Just occasionally when it makes sense for the subject and techniques.

    Thanks for this video. I agree with everything except the background. The butterflies were cut around the final cats photo but as a client I would be more pleased to have just the animal being highlighted. If it was my cat I would not want that. A background yes but not something to distract from my car. Maybe I’m just different. I would not want that. Just my opinion.

    • @LanaGloschatArt
      @LanaGloschatArt  ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree that when you work for a client its important to match your creativity with their expectations. In this situation the artist was just using a random stock photo and I was pushing them to add a bit more interest and originality... but the beautiful thing about art is that there are never right answers, just lots of different interesting options.
