    Along with improving my art skills, I'm finding your voice overs help me to manage my pain levels and help me to cope daily. I can't express how much you help me in so many ways. Thank you and bless you. I'm still struggling to make flesh tones using your technique, but I'll keep practicing and watching your videos. Since I'm mostly house bound now, I miss having honest critiques. It's nice when people say nice things on my Instagram postings, but that doesn't help to promote growth.

      I am so pleased that my work is helping you so Patricia... I would recommend joining my Patreon where you get more benefits which includes an exclusive Facebook group page to join... there, other artists support each other and give advice for improvements. Thanks for watching. 🙏

    I've recently learnt that the artist benefits if we let the advertisements run instead of clicking skip. I'd like to ask people to do this now that we know because Dave puts a lot into his videos for us for free and I think that shows our appreciation. Thanks Dave for another great video.

    Wonderful demonstration. I have the CarbOthello and Faber Castel and love them both and use them a lot in my animal life work. They work so well with both pan and stick pastels. I have held off on the Caran D'ache because so many seem to complain about them being difficult to sharpen and use. Watching you be patient with them and achieving the objective reinforces that the pencils are just fine, it is all about the right technic for the tool.

    Such an excellent explanation of the differences in feel and workability of each brand. I enjoy each for different reasons but before I had the Pastelmat I leaned more on the Carbothellos and the Caran ‘de ache pastel pencils but I do enjoy the Faber-Castell ones on this substrate. It seems to use less tooth and I can get down my preliminary work. A blend of them all is worth it. Thank you for putting into words and illustration how each contributes.😊

    Hi Dave, which make of Pencils would you rate in your opinion as out of these 3 for a good place to start?.

    • @DavePortersArt
      @DavePortersArt  ปีที่แล้ว

      I would say the CarbOthlleo as the price is good and the quality is superb... one thing I would do is change some of the blues and purples to other brands because of the light fastness is poor with them. Also buy the Whites... Caran d'Ache, Faber Castel and the Rembrandt stick white and you are good to go.

  • @barbdouglas3242
    @barbdouglas3242 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I’m going to have to order some Pitt pencils. I use my carbothellos and like them very much. Also have ordered about a dozen Caran D’ache but have had an issue with scratchiness with over half of them :( maybe there was a quality issue? I was looking for a softer pencil to add details on wildlife work on velour paper.

    • @DavePortersArt
      @DavePortersArt  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Barb, thanks for watching the Pitt pastels are a harder pencil, great for details. The issue you are having with the Caran d'Ache could be the glue that holds the lead in place, I tend to make sure I shafer off this with a knife. You cant go far wrong with the carbothello brand, only be aware of the lightfastness of some of the pencils. 🙏

    Hey i have a question -
    Why do you use green and red instead of just using a brown pencil? I mean they both create brown,so i wonder why do you choose to mix both of them,it feels more complicated to me :)

    • @DavePortersArt
      @DavePortersArt  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi there, I do use just brown and red sometimes for the under drawing... tbh for years | just used the brown, but now I feel that as the green is complementary to red this makes a natural desaturation and shadows. I do add brown to make the deeper shadows still. I use sometime brown and blue to make like a black colour, but with pastels I have to add the black sometimes. It is very subtle and I feel it give more of a natural look to the skin. All the very best 🙏

    Hello Dave, I ordered individual pencils to draw with you on Patreon and to master your way. But I only have very large sheets of 50/70 cm white Pastelmat. What is the best way to make this gray? Because it is too valuable not to use them. how would you make the sheets gray? I have everything at home, gouach, watercolor, pastel chalk in all forms and acrylic paint. hope you can help me with this. Greetings Julia from the Netherlands

    • @DavePortersArt
      @DavePortersArt  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi Julia, it is something I have not done myself as I have always used Pastelmat dark grey. I would suggest cutting strips off and try water colour ~ a mixture on Burnt Umber and Ultramarine Blue to make your grey... its a case of experimenting. All the best... please let me know what you uncover, then I can share with others. Many thanks Dave🙏
