    So useful. Thank you for your review. I have been wondering about Jackson’s pastels for a while. Sounds like they are worth a try.

    They would be nice for testing out ideas and color schemes. Then do the finish art in Unison.

    This is very helpful for me. I’ve just begun with pastels this year (2020) and this is the only brand I have tried but I have nothing to compare them to. Pastels are pretty expensive and I wanted to try the 14 set to see if I like this medium. I do, and so far my paintings have worked out well. I will keep practicing and experimenting before buying more but it would be fun to have a good collection of colors. Thank you!!

      I started with much poorer quality than the Jackson's. Definitely a good enough quality pastel to get you hooked. Enjoy :-)

    Thank you Emma for this review. They seem to be worth a try in addition to my other brands. Each brand has its own merit when painting and these do look as if they perform well. By the way, thank you so much for your tutorial on using velour paper! I'm almost finished with a major painting on velour and really loving it!

    I am still struggling with which brand of pastel to use, I have some Rembrandt's and Sennelier and just ordered some of the Unison you like so much, I got them off of E-Bay at a much lower than retail price! I also ordered some of the Mungyo from Japan as they look to be handmade and very inexpensive too. Well compared to Terry Ludwig's! I appreciate your videos, the techniques you show and your presentation is wonderful, Your Lovely voice is a pleasure to listen to and learn from! Please continue to expand your video library and Any recommendations you care to offer will be appreciated.

      How are you liking the Mungyo and did you get the handrolled? I am thinking of buying some so would love to hear what you think of them and how they compare to the other pastels you have.

    but how soft are they? are they 'hard' like nupastels, or softer like unison/sennelier or something in between? I have nupastels and want to get some softer ones but price wise, it's hard to find anything to try out in a decent range. Jackson's is a nice price spot.

    Thank you for the review! Just wondering...do most pastels have good light fast ratings by design or is there specific information to look for? Unlike watercolor paints, I find this info is not that easy to come by. Thanks in advance for any advice you may provide.

      Hi and good question! The info is hard to find because as far as I know they were only just developing the lightfastness standard for soft pastel. It just doesn't seem to have one so manufacturers don't have to state if they are or not. It's good to go with companies who can say that about their product of course which is why I recommend contacting the company if in doubt. It's common that fluorescent colours don't have lightfastness but I will be interested to see a standardised system in place. I strongly believe that you get what you pay for with pastels when you start to investigate the ingredients used. It's exactly why I've reviewed the Jackson's pastels positively in terms of someone who wants the feel of decent quality for starting out without breaking the bank. There are certain brands who I think will rate highly from lightfastness tests and those are Unison, PanPastel, Rembrandt and Terry Ludwig. But there is still a place in the market for the less expensive brands as long as we know what the differences are.

    Is this a Jackson's landscape green set or they've picked the colours for this set?

    Hi Emma, Whereabouts did you buy the Gorden Becin pastels? I can't find them anywhere.

    • @EmmaColbertArt
      @EmmaColbertArt  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I didn't actually purchase the Gorden Becin pastels I have apart from a pink which I bought from Dakota Pastels. Another couple were a gift from a friend. I think you can contact Gorden directly if you search him on Facebook. His pastels are beautiful and I think he's a really nice guy to communicate with.

    I have several sets of the Jacksons handmade pastels and like them; except for the labels, they are hard to remove and I had a couple of the pastels break into tiny unusable pieces trying to get the labels off of them. Other than the labels, I do like them; although not as well as the Gordan Becin, Sennelier, Unison, Art Spectrum Extra Soft or Schminke ones.

    How does the Jackson pastel compare with Unison?

    • @EmmaColbertArt
      @EmmaColbertArt  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unisons have much better light fast qualities as often with the cheaper brands that's one of the things you're sacrificing. But a great pastel to practise with and feels very like Unison in some ways.

      @@EmmaColbertArt Thank you Emma, that makes total sense. As I am just a beginner, then I think I'll order the Jacksons.

      @@EmmaColbertArt - thank you for your reply, Emma. So just to confirm - the definition of light fast quality -- does that mean that the cheaper brands will not last as long in a finished painting? or that the colors will not remain as brilliant/true? Thank you.

    Very informative as always, thank you. As a relative newbie to serious art and pastel (around 1 yr) I was wondering if you have a preferred lighting system when daylight conditions are poor please?
