People will just look for any tiny reason to hate or just make things up so their hate can feel justified when it’s really all just bullshit. I don’t think they’d ever say any hateful things to his face
I met Matt Heafy a few weeks ago and I have to say he'a probably the nicest guy I've ever seen. He even tried to speak german with me which was very funny. I could listen to him for days and it wouldn't be boring.
I would agree with Matt that In Waves is Trivium's first album where they found their sound. I started listening to Trivium from The Crusade and what got me hooked it because it was like Metallica and Iron Maiden put together. Now I love all their albums!
I was just recently introducted to Trivium,I listen to a few songs online and went and brought In Waves.,Special Edition,WOW,It's Fantastic,In Waves,Inception to the end,Black,Watch the world burn,Caustic ties that bind,All of these yesterdays,Built to Fall,Down from the sky,Shattering the Skys above,Iv'e almost worn it out!! ADDICTED!!Those guys rock, and I look forward to checking out there other albums.Hope to check them out in Melbourne next yr.\m/
Guys really, stop saying that he is metal hipster, so he likes to try different things? So what? He needs glasses, "Oh my god! he is such a hipsterrrr!" No, he needs glasses! He likes art, so what? Is he only supposed to like skulls and stuff? No, he doesn't. He is just trying new styles, excuse him if he wants to please everyone, he is only doing this for his fans, so stop saying you don't like this, you don't like that. He's trying something new, you don't need to comment just support him! :)
Such a cool guy, so inspiring! I would kill to meet him one day. BTW if you haven't already, GET IN WAVES. It's absolutely amazing!!! Every song on it is catchy.
just because because someone can read words doesn't make them any worse at giving a speach than some who can't its the the same with music it depends on the person themself
I think Matt's got a point. Listening to In Waves, it doesn't remind me immediately of another bands sound. While not as groundbreaking as Shogun, I don't think it's cliched. "Caustic..." and "A Grey So Dark" are my highlights. However, I still think Shogun is one of the greatest metal albums ever produced. I really don't think any band sounds like THAT. The 12-minute title track is a masterpiece.
it was in waves for me. at a dream theater concert with trivium opening. i loved it so much that as soon as the second song played i ran to get the album, and ithought that they shouldve had more play time
These guy's are the best musicians that I've ever heard. These guy's got out younger than most musicians out there that show's that they have what most of us wish we had. The farther they go the better they get.
I'd love for Trivium to come and play here in Kenya. The rock and metal scene has been really descent for the last 6 years and is still growing with more and more local bands forming. So if you guys get a chance, please come over. You have fans here
At the In Flames show in LA, I had never heard Trivium. By the time they were playing Black I was totally in to it. Great live show. It's definitely the best way to hear a new band.
the way that they did the videos for in waves is really cool, its the only band i know of that actually lets you have that anticipation for the story, instead of doing a video in a warehouse
First Trivium album I heard was Crusade - the title song is one of my favourites - but each album is brilliant in its own way. The way I see it is they started out in the whole metalcore genre and as they grew and diversified, their music tastes and style did too. Some won't like it, but personally I like to see a band progress and try new things instead of being one dimensional
Good interview. Insightful and honest. I think Trivium is fuckin incredible! And I dont understand a lot of the hate comments. How can you just hate someone for who they are with out actually knowing them? Was the person not who you wanted them to be???
Put it to you like this. If you had tons of skills like him and all that fame and cash and you were just happy to get to play music for a living, who the fuck cares what you do in your free time. He can say and be whatever the fuck he wants on his time as long as he is the same badass we all know and love. If your hating it's cuz you suck at life and have nothing better to do but put others down. Get over it! And get on with your life. Metal is about unity and coming together as a family not ca
"Basically means everything else is just catering to the masses." - this is one way to see it. I think what he really means, though, is that with the newer albums, they looked at it with more of a whole picture mindset. Keeping a red thread through the album from first to last track, instead of just making 10-12 tracks and putting them on an album.
@Ulrikth Haha, I see what you mean, and its fairly hard to explain what I mean by modern metal, so I guess I can just say best metal album of the last 15-ish years?
most rockstars of any rock genre didnt study music, even as a hobby. just find passion. and that passion carries u through the instruments to music. just another way to express ur feelings.
Wauw!! great interview! really great! some of the stuff he talked about was very inspiring to me! I love In Waves, and now I also understand more why they made a different type of music video and why the cover looks different.. LOVE IT!! you are really doing something different Trivium, to Metal & in a very positive way! fuck the haters! really!! they are the type of metal heads/musicians who will never become succesful with music, because they all want to sound the same.
its fuckin great when people reach a point of virtuosity that do not need to know about music grammar it happens with a lot of great excelent musicians like james hetfield, victor wooten, and most of rock musicians, fuckin empirical masters!! n.n
I personally think that Shogun is their best album so far..but if I were to choose the album that represents Trivium the most for me it would be ascendancy.
ugh so pissed lol, on my birthday in nov they were playing near me and i wanted to see them soooo bad..... too bad i was stuck in a hotel room with nothing to do D:
Anyone happen to know what gauge his ears are stretched to? They look to be at least 00g, and I am interested in getting mine done. Probably two sizes short of his would be my ultimate goal.
It was just to describe his personality at that time. Long hair, Fuck was every second word he spoke, and he put on such a tough personality, Now he's all nice again :)
I had a funny conversation with a friend about if each us preferred either "Death metal Matt" (Crusade - Shogun era) Or the new "Nice guy songwriter Matt" (In waves) XD What do you prefer?
I don't understand why people hate this guy so much. He is an interesting and insightful guy. I enjoy his thoughts on things
Most people I have encountered thinks he is a poser and embarassment to the metal scene. He is just intelligent and people dont like that.
@J K Haters gonna hate.....he's perfect! A perfect musician! Shogun is a masterpiece.

It's insane how intelligent this man is. I wish more musicians were like him.
Such a cool guy, so inspiring! I would kill to meet him one day.
BTW if you haven't already, GET IN WAVES. It's absolutely amazing!!! Every song on it is catchy.
He's a good person, he's nice, and he's a member of the best metal band :)
just because because someone can read words doesn't make them any worse at giving a speach than some who can't its the the same with music it depends on the person themself
His voice is so calm and just incredible to listen to.
this shows how much thought and creativity Trivium puts into their music. Such a wonderful band
He has the same birthday as myself ! Shouldn't be allowed, or?
I think Matt's got a point. Listening to In Waves, it doesn't remind me immediately of another bands sound. While not as groundbreaking as Shogun, I don't think it's cliched. "Caustic..." and "A Grey So Dark" are my highlights.

I would recommend Shogun to everyone lol
it was in waves for me. at a dream theater concert with trivium opening. i loved it so much that as soon as the second song played i ran to get the album, and ithought that they shouldve had more play time
Got into Trivium through Shogun. A brilliant album, and is their best record imo.
These guy's are the best musicians that I've ever heard. These guy's got out younger than most musicians out there that show's that they have what most of us wish we had. The farther they go the better they get.
Matt is one my very new musical influences, Trivium rocks! So talented and down-to-earth metal, their just simply, amazing!
I'd love for Trivium to come and play here in Kenya. The rock and metal scene has been really descent for the last 6 years and is still growing with more and more local bands forming. So if you guys get a chance, please come over. You have fans here
agree wit u, in waves is 'alright' for me, but shogun is so memorable & unique & everything about it is stunning.
"redefining what we are in this genre "
this man is so insightful, truly one of my idols
First Trivium album I heard was Crusade - the title song is one of my favourites - but each album is brilliant in its own way. The way I see it is they started out in the whole metalcore genre and as they grew and diversified, their music tastes and style did too. Was lucky enough to meet Matt Heafy, real nice guy and one of the coolest dudes on the planet.
God damn Matt is such a pro. Love these interviews. thANKS FOr the uplaod
Good interview. Insightful and honest.
I think Trivium is fuckin incredible! And I dont understand a lot of the hate comments.
How can you just hate someone for who they are with out actually knowing them?
Was the person not who you wanted them to be???
Haven't really watched an interview with Matt since Shogun's release (2008). He's really matured as a person and it shows. More tranquil.
it's strange how hypnotic and calm his voice is
Thanks man, your comment is about 1 year old, but it's super nice to read such things!
this is why in waves is so great, they did what they wanted and sounded how they wanted to sound
I definitely would like to meet Matt, and talk about stuff... he seems to be really interesting.
His glasses make him look wise, not that he isn't already.
Put it to you like this. If you had tons of skills like him and all that fame and cash and you were just happy to get to play music for a living, who the fuck cares what you do in your free time. Great interview!! Different than most interviews.
Great interview!!

Love how I did the exact thing he was talking about and was thrown off by In Waves, but I love the album!
*-* He´s just a perfect man! Not only talented but open minded and very thoughtful!
Matt is such a classy and respectable man
AMAZING interview.
I have met him only once though he is a really cool guy, Interesting conversations about playing at venues \m/
That was an amazing interview, a lot of what Matt had to say surprised me but in a good way =]
good interview was very insightfull
I love him.
Queen: Night at the Opera? That threw me off coming from the lead of Trivium.
GOd id give anything to sing like he does
Really great interview btw!
I went to that concert. AMAZING. :D
I'm so proud when he said he likes nasi padang from Indonesia. sometimes I'm proud being an Indonesian. thanks MATT!!!
@Ulrikth Haha, I see what you mean, and its fairly hard to explain what I mean by modern metal, so I guess I can just say best metal album of the last 15-ish years?
i think this video was either uploaded a day or two before or after the show i went to
queen night at the opera wouldn't expect him to say that but its an amazing album
most rockstars of any rock genre didnt study music, even as a hobby. just find passion. and that passion carries u through the instruments to music. just another way to express ur feelings.
Thanks for the intelligent comments!
Matt's a true gentleman and a scholar.
Wauw!! great interview! really great! some of the stuff he talked about was very inspiring to me! Ya his dad is American and his mom is japanese
I clicked on this interview cuz he's wearing glasses.
Curiosity, list your favourite Trivium albums in order.
1. Shogun
2. In Waves/Ascendancy.
4. The Crusade.
5. Ember to Inferno.
Still being sad that I missed Matt in Frankfurt Musikmess
Hmm, I never thought of it like that. You may be right.
I personally think that Shogun is their best album so far..but if I were to choose the album that represents Trivium the most for me it would be ascendancy.
He really is an absolute genius.
Thumbs up for Walk in the beginning!!!

If they can combine In Waves and Shogun, I think we'd have the greatest modern metal record of all time.
I had a funny conversation with a friend about if each us preferred either "Death metal Matt" (Crusade - Shogun era) Or the new "Nice guy songwriter Matt" (In waves) XD
What do you prefer?
matt heafy has grown up a bit!! its alot cooler now...although ive always loved trivium

@MetalSword106 But then there was Chaos Reigns, A Skyline's Severance, Dusk Dismantled etc. :D
well, I though he was gonna say an original soundtrack. But, yeah.. cool
Ascendancy is still their best album in my opinion. In Waves is pretty good though.
