Subotica Serbia 🇷🇸 - I Had High Expectations

  • Quick stop in Subotica, Serbia on my way back from Romania to Hungary. After what I have read about this city, my expectations were extremely high. My actual experience was a bit sobering. When you are in the region, you should definitely stop by and spend a few hours there, but for most people, it is probably not a place to spend multiple days.

People forget that Serbia had no money for 25 years following the wars and sanctions. I was back in Serbia last month for the first time in 11 years and what a lot of changes there are. It must be the fastest developing country in Europe, everywhere seems to be having a makeover and there are building projects and road improvements wherever you go. I have absolute faith that anything that needs to be done in Subotica will be eventually.

All these building sites, roads, train tracks, stations and literally everything that is spent on lands in the pocket of the politicians, and we, our kids, our grandkids and theirs will pay this to the chinese for houndreds of years. Sorry but I rather live in a not so modern country instead of selling my soul and future of my family to the chinese.

From your video I can see that your expectations of Subotica were really high. Well my friend, you stayed there for a few hours and in a typically ignorant manner presented a town without any previous research. Well, I had really high expectation of Bavaria too, because everyone was talking how good it was, I have to admit - you have the best paid PR there. I stayed in Bavaria not for a few hours but for two years and I regret every second of it. Franken is the most primitive, rude and non interesting part of West Europe I have ever experienced.

The point of my video is not to provide something like a comprehensive travel guide. It is obviously about my subjective impressions visiting this town for the first time, not very well prepared and only for a few hours. I still think it could be helpful for viewers who plan to visit Subotica because they typically are in the same situation.
By the way, I agree that Bavaria is overrated. On the other hand, I am a huge fan of Franken, especially Bamberg, Bayreuth and the Fränkische Schweiz region. People there can be a bit "special". They are normally really friendly but have a very direct way that is easily misinterpreted as rudeness.
Did I mention that I was born in Franken? 😊

@@frankexplores4794 Frank, based on your utmost ignorance, I figured immediately that you are from Franken, that is so transparent to foreigners who spent some time there. On the other hand, the only thing I like about Bamberg are the Bamberger Symphoniker, whose Musicians, paradoxally, mostly do not originate even from Germany 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I think what makes Subotica special for Serbians is that it’s close to Hungary and reflects that in its character. However, for Hungarians, it’s so similar to your average small city there, that it’s not so special - as you said. Thanks!

Having been there for only a few hours, I habve no idea if it is a good city to live in. Regarding language, I mostly heard Serbian, some people, maybe 20%, speaking Hungarian in the streets. However I read that the Hungarian speaking population is almost 30%. Personally, my favourite city in the whole region, Szeged, is only a few kilometers away and I could definitely imagine to live there. (In Szeged, that is.)

I hope that you have an income and that you are not dependent on work, which you might be doing there . Szeged is nicer and cleaner and the people are a little bit different than in Vojvodina. Everything has its good and bad sides.

Subotica is city of primarly croatian history and than serbian.Hungaryans got their way there by force. From earlyest point of history of subotica (after it was reconquerd by hasburg monarchy from ottoman empire) when it became baroque town and not just military fort all the way till ww2 it was settled by croats 65%+ and not any croats but croats from dalmatia who came and founded modern subotica.

The buildngs are in bad shape because they dont belong to anyone. Only the rooms/apartments inside are owned by people. Thats why no one is interested in investing money for the facades. Or the apartment owners cant decide on how to restore it. There also are no such things as Hausverwaltung or Hausmeister. So there's also no one to take care of the buildings. The government takes care of the historical buildings, but that's, of course, it. So it really hasnt anything to do with the country's GDP.

Actually not true, by law in Serbia anything outside apartments in residential buildings is a joint ownership of all tenants and their responsibility. And all residential buildings by law must have building manager who is chosen by all tenants. Things improved a lot in that matter in the last 4-5 years since new law and regulations were put in place, since before those new regulations it was pure anarchy in anything regarding maintenance, investments and renovations of residential buildings since everyone just acted its responsibility of the state (old communist ways, proved devastating in many ways). Law now is basically copied from EU regulations.
