    I used to think when I was buying a limited run game, I was buying something special. But they slammed their name on everything. Now I kind of cringe when I see that they're the ones releasing a game I want

      That’s the sentiment I’ve been seeing A LOT online over the past few months. I’ve noticed there’s a big negative connotation with Limited Run whenever someone mentions them nowadays. That’s how I felt when I heard they were distributing Yakuza Kiwami on Switch. I was hoping it would just get a standard retail release.

      Sadly, I only discovered LRG about a year and a half out from what I consider the "Beginning of the End, " which was River City Girls.
      It struck me as very odd when I pre-ordered a copy and it arrived like 2 weeks later right around release and I remember being a little disappointed when a few patches came out a little while after that needed to be installed. It was just like buying any other new release and not the "special" experience of getting a supposedly complete-on-cart game.
      Where once I eagerly checked their site to see what old favorites or new hidden gems would be getting a physical release, I now very rarely and begrudgingly buy from them when there's a Persona 4 Golden tier release to be had.

    Biggest part of LRG? You can buy games at cons they are set up at MONTHS before the ppl who bought them pre sale get them. When Persona 4 got released through them, I could pick up a standard physical copy and my friend still had to wait like months until he got his.

    • @AquaTwist_
      @AquaTwist_  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yup! Part of why I only order from them if I really want to grab a release as soon as it ships. Persona 4 Golden was easy to get at PAX West so there wasn’t any point in ordering it online for me. Also games like Castlevania Dominus Collection I can easily see getting restocked at VGP or at conventions very soon.

    • @BeginnerMan1
      @BeginnerMan1 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @AquaTwist_ that's the problem tho, if i can get it at a con, why should I have to wait? It SHOULD be the other way around.

  • @MatthewSmart
    @MatthewSmart หลายเดือนก่อน +6

    I do appreciate Limited Run Games on paper. I very much prefer getting games physically when possible for most of the same reasons that you do, and having an option that's only available for a small period is certainly better than not getting these smaller titles physically at all. My problem is that you're essentially playing the lottery when it comes to if you get your copy in a reasonable time and how high quality it'll be. For example, I bought a copy of West of Loathing back in 2018, and due to complications with the developer getting sick among just lack of communication, that pushed production back a ton and it took my copy way too long to arrive as a result. Meanwhile, I bought Golf Story 2 months later and that arrived at my home before West of Loathing did. You also don't know if the game comes with any of the updates or DLC that the digital version already got. Sometimes they do, but sometimes they don't, and that kind of defeats some of the purpose of owning it physically. These releases can also feel like a scapegoat for some companies to just cheap out and produce less copies of their critically acclaimed titles to save on cash. I feel like Atlus could've easily printed copies of Persona 4 Golden themselves if they really wanted to. Most recently, the Yakuza releases confuse me greatly since they're just doing them on PS4 and Xbox... even though all of those games already got physical releases on the PS4 from Sega themselves, so why not just stick to Xbox and Switch, or better yet, just print copies for them in-house? Then there's also issues with the staff themselves and the morality of some of their choices, but that's a whole other can of worms entirely. I do still order from Limited Run if there's a game that really interests me that I don't already own digitally, but it's far from the most thrilling experience.

    • @AquaTwist_
      @AquaTwist_  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I’m still baffled they’re just reprinting Yakuza on PS4 since they already were on there before. The only benefit for this is for Xbox collectors since they weren’t on there physically before. Also 3, 4, and 5 Remeastered will presumably have their own cases like they do in Japan, unlike the normal US Remastered Collection just being 1 Physical game. Persona 4 Golden I believe was a retail on the Vita years ago, so going through LRG was odd imo. Limited Run still excites me when they have new releases sometimes, just not as much as they used to be back in the early 2020s.

    This is definitely a good topic for a video! Lots of good points here. I'm in the same boat where I haven't been too happy with a lot of what I've been seeing Limited Run do in recent times (especially that whole thing about them selling one of their 3DO game releases on burned CD-R's 😬), but at the same time they've also done so many cool things over the years that I still appreciate them. I will always be grateful that they released the SEGA Astro City Mini outside of Japan, and I really love having that in my collection.

    LRG has gotten worse. Many games like Gargoyles Remastered, Lollipop Chainsaw, etc have game breaking bugs on cart. As someone who has bought from LRG since the beginning, (I still have Breach and Clear Vita sealed.) I have to say, despite all their faults, they've very much been a positive influence on the gaming world. I'm a staunch supporter of physical media, and LRG have given me the chance to play many games I otherwise never would have given a look. They also helped spurn the physical indie scene, with Strictly Limited, Super Rare, Red Art Games, etc.
    I'm really looking forward to seeing what other games they can bring back with the Carbon Engine. I'm not particularly keen on the current state of countless remasters as often it feels like a lazy practice, especially when the games themselves aren't even very old. (Also price gouging. We've gone from Spyro Reignited Trilogy, with 3 games in 1, to just Pac Man World 1 by itself, at the same price point. Or Sega Mega Collection with 25+ games, at a reduced price, to Sonic Origins with buggy versions of only a handful of games for standard retail price.) But the original Clock Tower never got an official English release, and there's the prospect of them reviving games that are effectively impossible to play outside of piracy, so I'm in full support of such efforts.

    • @AquaTwist_
      @AquaTwist_  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Agreed, Limited Run Games has been doing a lot of good in terms of game preservation lately, especially with Clock Tower Rewind and the Carbon Engine. I just wish Remasters and Ports had a more consistent quality across the entire industry and not just for a few key players.

      Agreed, Limited Run Games has been doing a lot of good in terms of game preservation lately, especially with Clock Tower Rewind and the Carbon Engine. My copy of tomba is lost in limbo and they have told me I have to give it another week to even see if it ships after I got noticed on 11/2 it was shipping. • @Slick_Tails
      @Slick_Tails หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@geoffreychauvin1474 It's unfortunate you've had a shipping issue, but I'd argue that still doesn't take away from them being a positive influence. Many of the big games companies have been trying to do away with physical copies entirely, and much of the consumer base is focused on digital as well, seeing physical gaming as a vestige of a bygone era that people need to move on from. If it weren't for Limited Run, we might never have seen the physical market (especially for indies) grow to what it is now, and many of these physical editions for games might not exist in any capacity. Them being the only option is better than that option never existing in the first place.

    The thin instruction booklet that came with Contra may not be a issue under Limited Run's control. I recently was chatting with the DEV behind 8 Bit Adventures 2 (currently on LRG) and they mentioned plans to include a manual. they mentioned it will likely be a small number of pages due to printing costs. The way they were talking made it seem like the choice of manual size was a developer choice, and not under LRG's control.
    My only real issue with LRG is the fact that it is one and done, so if supply dries up and there is high demand, the game returns to being inaccessible for a large part of the market, defeating the entire purpose of game preservation.
