The real preservationists are those working on emulation (especially accurate emulation) and are dumping games. It might be piracy now, but when all physical units inevitably break down, it'll be the only way to play. And because it's just software, we can keep it around no matter where technology goes in the next 100 years or so.

    • @joshuapittman4663
      @joshuapittman4663 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

I don’t particularly like emulation, but overall it’s necessary. Not everyone is gonna buy a cartridge from 1988 and thus will play the game for free via emulation. Not to mention that although it’s possible to keep cartridge games going through resoldering damaged ports or possible to repair disc games though resurfacing, but disc rot is a thing via the glue that holds discs together going bad and rotting away the discs plus you can only repair a cartridge so much until it inevitably starts working. Collecting physical copies is a short term solution to keeping games around that are no longer on the market while emulation is free and protects those games until the software possibly gets lost.
Just do whatever you want and experience games in whatever way you like, personally I’ll collect anything I can afford and then experience the other games through emulation.

    • @aquapendulum

Digital pirates are always better preservationists than corporations. No artificial scarcity. No planned obsolescence of physical media reading devices. No on-disc DRM. They solved the final obstructions that physical media put in the way of preservation.

Dear God how i wished you'd messaged me before you put this video out XD
Aaero: Put up the price by an extra $5 literally the moment it went up for sale, neglected to mention it to anyone. Turns out they'd put the price up because they decided last minute that they were going to put the DLC on the disc after a number of people complained.
Lawbreakers: An online only title, where the small print mentioned that it had offline functionality but neglected to mention that only the tutorial was available to play offline. By the time people received the physical copies of the game, the servers were closed, so had essentially sold people a shiny coaster.
Curse of Money Island Collection: The boxes have been misprinted, and it also turns out that a number of discs and USB sticks with the game on it, cannot be loaded, or are simply missing files entirely.
Asterbreed: Some discs were misprinted, and didn't have any data on them. You wouldn't know this unless you opened your game and tested, so plenty of people either bough them from LRG with no data on the disc, or bought them sealed from scalpers only to find there was no data on the disc.
Metronomicon: Personally suffered from this one myself. Bought the physical game and OST bundle, and received an empty box with the title of the game slapped on the label. Literally, an empty box. Multiple people complained about the same issue, only to find out LRG had started taking them out of peoples hold orders (when hold orders were still a thing) so they could get the single orders out to people faster, and had to resort to buying copies from scalpers on eBay to give to the people they'd sold them to in the first place.
One Step From Eden: The game was available to buy as a physical Japanese copy, that had every language on it including English...... Right up until LRG got ahold of it to publish it for the US, then mysteriously, and had NOTHING TO DO WITH THEM lolololol, the Jap version announces that it no longer has English on it, just every other language.
Crossing Souls and Swords of Ditto: Printed the wrong covers on the manuals, but made sure to slap that extra $5 on the price tag for the privilage of having a manual in the box.
Between misprints, missing data, missing packages, scalpers, personally being called a prick by Douglas Bogart (which i maintain is a badge of honour these days), there's plenty more where this came from XD
LRG used to have forums, and oh boy if you could see some of the screenshots from that bad boy, i think you'd be little more than shocked XD
Shall we also go into the topic of LRG's doxxing of another CEO of a different competitor company?...... Nah, that'd go too far right?.....right? ;)

Can confirm LRG has bad customer service. NEVER place an order with multiple items, they won't ship until you ask where your stuff is. I've experienced this twice. On the order page, everything said "Ready" and in warehouse, both times I waited a month or so then finally contacted them and they shipped a day later. So apparently they have no system to notify them when all items are ready and they need to ship. Fairly mind-boggling. Or maybe they do it on purpose to encourage you to place an order per item? They do have the annoying policy where they won't ship until everything in the order is ready. So basically only order one item at a time. Another annoying thing is they just throw in the collector cards in the box, no card protectors or anything. They're just rubbing against the inside of the cardboard shipping box. I can confirm that I have gotten all my games, so they're not trash or scammers, they just have some annoying policies and practices.

LRG has accidentally sent me an extra copy of my orders 3 times. One of which was them messing up my order and sending me a regular copy of bloodstained: Curse of the moon 2. It had been so long since I preordered it, I completely forgot I ordered the collectors edition. A week later, I got my collectors edition, to my surprise. The other two extras is Shiren the wanderer (I only ordered the regular version of this one), and the collectors edition of The king of Fighters 2002: unlimited match (so I have 2 collectors editions). The fact that this happened 3 times and this was when I was slowing down my purchases from them speaks to how disorganized they are on keeping track of their orders.

But despite that, LRG has issues with several things like their shipping partners DHL being terrible, which I know isn't their fault but they did sign a contract with them. Plus I have seen a ton of packages/games being ruined due to their lack of packaging skills.
It's also ridiculous how insane the digital-physical price differential can be. Like Doom 64 costing 5 USD in the eShop but having a 25 USD price, plus shipping, plus taxes. It often tends to become the biggest deal breaker for me but apparently I am one of the few in this fb group that's called dumb considering the price difference.

adding to this, limited run recently made a steam developer account and it really shows that premium pricing does not equal premium production cost. unlike most collections, LRG keeps references to both of its steam games' emulation practices wholly unencrypted, even with references to emulation for games from consoles they haven't even put on steam yet and the roms themselves readily available for people to copy-paste or replace with other roms as they see fit. oh, and did i mention that these roms remove all references to former publishers or even what year the games came out? for reference, these edits are so shoddy that i could recreate the new roms entirely in about five minutes with tile layer pro.
if that's not bad enough, these games have a newly added map feature, which is literally just images from vgmaps with the credit information cropped out. whilst they would not be the first to get caught doing, these particular maps have additional details, by which i mean an image-based strategy guide to the entire fucking game.

You'll catch a lot of flack from fans, but I fell out with them some time ago. Initially I bought from them because I bought into the preservation nonsense, plus I have that collector gene. Once it became clear that they were stretching the truth about preservation, and they were going to release WAY more volume than I wanted to collect... I was out, mostly. I'll still grab Shantae games, shooting games (more M2 Shot Triggers please!).. basically stuff I'd buy regardless of who published it. There was also that time that they double-shipped an entire order, then threatened to charge me for them if I didn't return them at MY expense. And after I brought it to their attention by requesting a shipping label, which they did finally provide after 5 weeks or so.

I get the collecting bug but. If your buying a modern game solely on investment then your gaurenteed to be disappointed in the long run. This isn't new I would buy good games like sotn or silent hill a decent prices and I laugh when a remaster is released and all these folks watch their "investments" decrease.
Hell I bought the grey turok rage wars cause I wanted the corrected version BUT I paid 2.00 for it and couldn't help but sell it when it was 200 plus when I needed money.

LRG just opened a physical location in NC. It's only opened on weekends and typically has a line when they open in the morning. I went the first 3 weekends to pick up some odds and ends.
Each time there were several customers buying literal stacks of collectors editions that they would pile along the wall by the registers adding to their stacks while looking up resale prices on their phones. There were more than a few customers walking around with binders of info that they were cross referencing with their stack of product. I don't make a habit of eaves dropping, but at least a couple of people were on their phones securing resales as they were shopping. One guy dropped about 4k in one sale and I believe (wasn't my business so I was only half paying attention) he bought as many collectors editions of a single game as he could carry. Another was bragging that he makes at least 20 bucks reselling each game he buys.
I can confidently say there are alot of proffesional resellers who benefit from LRG. I can't say whether LRG cares or not, but it was sort of blatant I can't imagine they didn't know what was going on.
This is just my personal observation for anyone curious. I'm not making any definitive accusations. There are some people buying stacks of games who legitimatly want to own several copies of a game. High five to them. However, the ones with binders running around making deals like they were on wall street were a little...sus. lol.

I although thought it was strange how everyone seemed to love it, since I always hated these guys because of the way they produce games. The whole “Limited Run” thing was always a sales tactic, was clearly done to trick people into buying stuff for ridiculous prices. I like the idea of physical releases of games that wouldn’t otherwise get it, but usually LRG isn’t producing a physical run of an important game no one can afford, they’re picking up the rights to games that sometimes would’ve got physical releases, and then selling a few copies to people who preorder, leaving everyone who missed that preorder time, giving them no option other than to buy them on eBay for a ridiculous price.
It seemed like in the early days of my exposure to them, they generally were trying to get games that would never get physical releases on disc to be preserved, or at least their business wasn’t anywhere near as scummy, but it feels so sneaky and toxic nowadays and I can’t stand it. If they really wanted to preserve digital only games, they wouldn’t do a $30 release of a 1 cent game, they would make a massive compilation of a ton of them and release that on cartridge. It’s all done for profit and to rip people off.

I just remembered that LRG had a end of year sale where you could buy up a copy of a game that was released in the past for a set price.
    The catch?
You had no indication of what you were going to get. You could only choose the console, and the game itself was completely up to them. And they even had the gall to have some games be less likely to be given out than others, down to the percentage point.
This was kind of the biggest indication that this business was extremely sketchy. It would have been easier to just relist the surplus games, but they felt that it was best to do it in a way that might very likely end up with you getting something you already have, or just don't want. It's a very bad idea, and it's kind of emblematic of everything wrong with the company.
Thanks for the very well done video, I'll be sure to stop supporting them.

Amazon eventually removed it and I believe gave him a warning.
Their product was advertised as premium and they charged almost double what I charge (when you factor in they charge their customers shipping costs).

Given that money doesn't fall from the trees, it was not common for me to buy full-price console games (sometimes even those at second hand), and therefore they only bought me games when I was more free from schoolwork, and _especially_ when I had mostly finished the games I already had. Now that I'm older and legally an adult, I could technically buy any game I wanted, but I still have restraint. There's only a couple games I do REALLY want, and I do pay attention to prices. The real kicker is that while I can understand indie companies getting physical releases through LRG, as they wouldn’t usually do so to begin with due to being a small independent company. But I’ve started growing tired of huge, Triple-A companies having their physical releases exclusive to LRG, which’s become more commonplace recently. There’s of course Sega/Atlus having the physical versions of Persona 3 Portable and Persona 4 Golden being exclusive, but just recently, Sega revealed the collector’s edition for SonicXShadow Generations…which is exclusive to LRG. I’m already hesitant to get it for the price tag ($250, wtf), but to get the collector’s edition for a game I want to play on launch but realistically won’t see until late 2025, maybe even early 2026 due to how absurdly long LRG takes to ship collector’s editions? Yeah, no thanks. As if charging up front for pre-orders that takes ages to ship wasn’t enough, this company’s artificial scarcity is only doing more harm than good in the end by giving scalpers a way to sell these releases at a premium once they’re no longer sold by LRG itself. It’s why I’m glad that PlayAsia exists, since at least a lot of these same games get Japanese physical releases with English language support that aren’t limited, sold for way better prices and won’t take your entire lifetime to ship to you. So tl;dr, go with the chad PlayAsia over the virgin LRG.

When I saw how truly LIMITED their games were printed it was an immediate red flag. When I saw their games being sold for way too much on eBay I knew it was a scam. I hope a company can learn from their mistakes and enter the market for the next Switch. I think LGR also cannibalized a smaller portion of the market that would have had developers push for publishing their games through a more established/less predatory company or to even self publish. They basically have a duopoly with Super Rare. Would be better if Limited Run could change their ways but will see if they are still around in 5 years and if so what their business looks like. They do ONE printing of a game and that's it, if you want a physical it's off to ebay to find a $300 copy of the game........or spend $80 for a physical import cause Japan printed the game en masse......or just wait a few years/weeks to find that same game on Gamestop/Target/Walmart for $40-$60 because another studio got publishing rights to it so what was the point again?

Here is a pro tip: if you buy anything from these guys get the vanilla version of the games . Don't get any of the collectors editions that come with the paper trinkets and Burger King toys. It takes years for this junk, get the disc and box and forget about it.

I only wanted to buy Scott Pilgrim physically because the game was already delisted once. It'll most likely be delisted again and I don't wanna go through emulation or piracy like I already was to play it if I either lose my account or the Eshop closes or something like that. I ordered the Special Edition because it was my birthday and I felt like treating myself with a semi-neat collector's piece.
Ordered it on my birthday, took about 6 months to arrive. Which is fair. Though the account I ordered it from said I had no pending orders and I never got a tracking number, it eventually arrived right around the time I was looking into the issues. And what I got was... disappointing.
The box it came in was not molded to fit the Switch case, instead it had 2 plastic bars holding it together that fell out as soon as I opened the box. The contents inside were okay, but they were also all stuffed below the switch case instead of in a manual holder on the side, which didn't exist and would've made sense. And the "freebie" concert ticket? shoved into the game case with nothing holding it.
And of course finally playing the game, I found out Knives Chau was only unlockable via connecting to a Ubisoft Connect account, which is online only content. If I lose my save and the servers shut down, Knives is no longer playable. Good game preservation here. Sure, Knives is a character in an otherwise complete game, but it's the little things that irritate me the most.
And after watching this video, the only real preservation way at this point, is piracy. I'd be better off playing the game on my hacked PS3 with all the DLC installed on my console for free then buying the physical cartridge cause at least then I know I can play the game in its entirety offline. I'll probably not be supporting Limited Run from now on.

I got a salty taste in my mouth EARLY on with LRG. When packages would show up damaged. And they would act like I was the bad guy for complaining about damaged purchases and want an exchange. Everyone was saying how great they were then. I am glad the public has finally figured out they are a money grab. And a pretty scummy one at that. It took the public a long time to seem to catch on though. I suspect LRG will have to make some changes somewhere down the road. Or they will start to see a major hit to their sales. You can only screw the pooch so long before the public doesn’t want to give you their hard earned money anymore. And a full blown recession is all but inevitable pretty quickly here. I was mostly fine with LRG until their recent Jedi: Survivor collector's edition. There were already red flags going off in my head, since EA was going to LRG to release the collector's edition (you know, EA, one of the biggest publishers on the market?), but I went for it anyway because I love the series and wanted the lightsaber that came with it. The game arrived a week after release, the physical copy was the same as any you could buy in any store, and the lightsaber was the same as the one they sold at Disneyland that I already owned, it just had a different battery cover to fit the look of the lightsaber in Survivor. Just a month or two later, Disney Parks started selling a newer, better version of Cal's lightsaber that changes color. Basically, LRG repackaged existing product (which Disney most likely was looking to get rid of), sold it at a semi-jacked up price, and gave really nothing that you couldn't have gotten elsewhere. I still have my collectible box though! Woo! (Edit: Man I'm tired of "collectible box" being a selling point on a lot of these games)

I have been debating trying to get my money back, but that sounds just as impossible after this video; plus, I used a Visa gift card to avoid using my own credit card, so I don't know if they can send my money back or even if I still have that particular card. I had no idea LRG did this and tbh it further cements my opinion that collecting videogames is turning into a big fucking scam, especially retro games.
However, people really need to get some personal responsibility and stop buying these things just out of FOMO. I have no problem with them selling multiple versions of the same product with different colors because people like choices. But they're supposed to be just that, choices, you're not supposed to buy them all and if you do it's totally on you. I don't see what's predatory about selling things in different colours.
Exploiting the dopamine rush you get when buying stuff isn't predatory, that's just marketing. What's scummy about LRG is the whole reselling of their own products to maximise profit, which i'm pretty sure is illegal. Operating under the guise of game preservation when limiting prints at every opportunity and artificially inflating the value of their products is the real problem here.
And the Shantae thing... Just gross.

Collecting video games has always been a scam lmfao. The other difference is that prior to around 2013 it was at least pretty damn affordable to do so. Now it really is just the hobby horse of the super wealthy and/or those who wish to intentionally manipulate the market and benefit from the insanely artificial price hikes.
It isn't about game preservation, it isn't about playing games authentically. The preserving had already been done and things like ODEs and flashcarts have given us the ability to play entire console libraries 100% authentically on original hardware for the cost of only said ODE/flashcart.
