You know what's wild, I went back and looked at the Drogas Wave video I did and the final question was whether Lupe would fly higher after leaving Atlantic. I think the answer is a major YES! He's in an incredible zone right now.
Hey Justin, ghoti is pronounced "fish" (as noted on the last word of the song). It's kind of a rabbit hole, but it depends on the fact that, because English is such a bizarre and inconsistent language, you can take the "gh" from "rough" (for an f sound), the 'o' from "women" (where it often sounds like "wimmen"), and the "ti" from "-tion" in words like "association" (for the "sh" sound). Hence, ghoti pronounced "f-i-sh". It's also some extreme linguistics nerd cred.
@@TheCompanyMan Lol, you'd think, but it's just English and the fact that it's stolen so many different words from so many diverse languages that you can basically make whatever sound you want with whatever letters you want if you're willing to be obscure enough.

Always here for a Company Man/Lupe breakdown. Love the album. Cant believe he was able to complete the Mural trilogy so perfectly. Genuinely appreciate this post-label era for him.
Easily one of the best Lupe albums Agreed that’s a verse of the year contender Lupe is an artist that I think can be overly complex lyrically to the detriment of the actual music but with this verse and music in Zion in general he has exercised that less can be more and I love it Great to have another breakdown !
I think a lot of people feel similarly. He's so far ahead he can chill and put out regular raps (for him) and still lead the league. This album has so much replay value for me.
@@TheCompanyMan I agree with everything you said sir, you are one of the few that give Lupe his flowers, if Lupe ever reaches out to you can you tell him I need a Nas verse on his upcoming Amy winehouse EP, even if Nas can't do that, I just would love a Collab from them in general, thanks for all you do brother🙏🏿
Superb breakdown. Wonderful to see that others that have so much passion and love about the intricacy and symbolism in Lupe's work. Thank you for the thoughtful analysis!!!!
Ms. Mural is one of the best songs I've ever heard and its something I'm currently tackling, and something I assume every artist ever is tackling so I was gonna argue with anything other than that having the best verse, but you're definitely right, that's the best verse
It's been so long since one of these came out. I lost it at, "if you haven't heard it, punch yourself in the face" 😂. I forgot about that. Welcome back, great vid!
I had to come back to this after listening to Ms Mural for the 100th or so time. And I totally agree with you that it’s one of his best stories. Definitely a top 5 for me as well. You wasn’t lying when you said that. It honestly gets better with each listen.
@@TheCompanyMan that makes a bunch of sense. It sounds like the type of conversation I’d have with myself on everyday type of stuff. And I think that’s why I enjoy it so much.
i love your spot on, concise analysis of lupe. it shows that you put in the work listening and studying the music. makes me wanna do some deep lupe breakdowns myself
Lupe easily in my Top 5. I’d go on to say that he’s most artist favorite rapper that they don’t want other artists to know they listen to. Because any of his albums even Lasers is a master class on lyricism.
I love the love he's been receiving in recent years. He's probably one of the last artists who truly got cancelled, or blackballed. But the Tylyer's and the Chance's and all the cats that came after him have been loudly praising him. He deserves it.

@@TheCompanyMan also may have to give the new Lupe album a couple listens I still love house the ep that came out two yrs ago if that counts as a mixtape that’s his best one in my opinion

And ever since this new album dropped, I’ve been on the lookout for great voices to speak on it. Always love your take on the culture so thank you, sir.
@@TheCompanyMan Hm, it being a Lupe project I have been giving myself some time to digest it. The other day I was listening to a podcast on the 20th anniversary of the Wire (hosted by Method Man) and David Simon is quoted saying that there are two kinds of audiences, those laying back and those sitting up. Lupe in general appeals to the latter, and with this project in particular. During my first listen I think that I expected tracks with more “bounce” to them, since Autoboto had been the first single out generating certain expectations and so the concentration the other tracks demanded caught me a bit off-guard honestly. But starting with the name and cover art, the imagery sets the tone incredibly well and with additional listens the project is incredible. The cover almost looking like a giant drill and the project name creates this atmosphere of the impending end of all things, like the sound of the drill over Zion in the matrix being this sound of the end of human existence booming from above but being contorted into a musicality. Something which I at times wonder make out the kernel of hiphop for me, generations of trauma only being able to be addressed musically because the “direct approach” is just strictly too much. Anyway, I’ll try and avoid writing way too much for a youtube comment and say that my favorite track is Ms Mural because it has that overarching conceptual structure for which I love Lupe’s art. But Faux Nem’s first verse hit differently. When he first says the line I thought to myself, as I snickered “classic Lupe, playing around”.. but as the beat carried on it started feeling overwhelming and painful, and as you aptly put it, like a moment of silence. By the time he starts singing that snickering was long gone and there was just that feeling of exhaustion. No moralizing, not even condemnation.. just a frustrated, somber hopelessness with a musicality to it. Drill music in Zion.
@@TheCompanyMan Right now it’s a top contender for album of the year for me. It’s this, K-dot’s masterpiece and Black Star’s No Fear Of Time. I’d love to hear a comment from you on the other two. Then let’s see what Thought and Dead Mouse come with because the Aquamarine single that dropped so far is incredible.
@@TheCompanyMan Awesome Album and another classic from Lupe. I absolutely love the jazzy songs off this record like DMIZ and NAOMI. I feel like we got an awesome mix of conscious lyrics and a clear important message/theme without the "preachniness" that still sounds sonically on point with replayability. It's so hard to compare any of Lu's top records against each other because they all bring their own uniqueness, but it's definitely at least in the same tier as F&L, T&Y, The Cool, and Drogas. Love that you brought up his old mixtapes into the conversation and was dope learning the context surrounding his Enemy of the State release and its similarities to this project.

You consistently bring the heat with your opinions. I can't help but, remember a year ago the radio played Lucid Dreams, Sad!, California love and I couldn't but, think "Damn all these guys are dead right now". It's a sad time when all your Goats are ghosts.
Fun fact: Song #2 “Ghoti” is actually pronounced “fish”. It’s an artificial word to showcase the irregularities in English. You pronounce the “gh” like you would in “enough”. You pronounce the “o” like you would in “women” And you pronounce “ti” like you would in “motion”.
Maybe it's my old age, a seemingly always bleeding heart, or the epiphany that was the last segment of your breakdown, whether it was, I've never had a breakdown move me to tears before. To say that this was powerful, would be an under statement, so thanks to you and Lupe for the thoughtfulness and humanity placed into both of your crafts, and reminding us of all that while HipHop is amazing, and I love it to my core, it's not worth dying over.
Dude I actually needed this... None of these big reaction channels can do Lupe justice. In fact Lupe can't be "reacted" to in the traditional YT format. This video is what a Lupe album deserves. Keep it up man 👊🏾

And you pronounce “ti” like you would in “motion”.

Welcome back
Maybe it's my old age, a seemingly always bleeding heart, or the epiphany that was the last segment of your breakdown, whether it was, I've never had a breakdown move me to tears before. To say that this was powerful, would be an under statement, so thanks to you and Lupe for the thoughtfulness and humanity placed into both of your crafts, and reminding us of all that while HipHop is amazing, and I love it to my core, it's not worth dying over.
Lupe has been a fire run since Tetsuo and Youth
BIGFAX. I'm loving every moment of it.
BIGFAX. I'm loving every moment of it.
Dude I actually needed this... None of these big reaction channels can do Lupe justice. In fact Lupe can't be "reacted" to in the traditional YT format. This video is what a Lupe album deserves. Keep it up man 👊🏾
Naomi is also my fave track, quality break down as always
Ive been missing the Breakdown in my life.
Me too Kyle. Thanks for rocking with me.
I love these vids… 💯
Justin!!! So glad for a new breakdown. I full agree Enemy of the State is his best mixtape. It’s got some of my favorite Lu bars. But Drill Music in Zion is definitely one of his best albums and something I think Hip Hop really needed.
Bigfax, Joey. Perfect timing.
@@TheCompanyMan I went to listen to the mixtapes on my own and totally forgot about the Pharaoh Height 2/30 tape. That’s a close 2nd for me. So thanks, for reminding me to listen to that again, without even trying
That intro music hits different 🔥
